If we all went minimalist the economy wouldn’t collapse it would stabilise. If we paid the true cost of items, labour (aka real people) would be honoured, the earth would be considered and wealth would be distributed.

One fairly simple change that can be made is using "glass storage containers" rather than plastic ones. It is healthier ,non toxic, and environmentally friendly. Your guest Shelbizleee has a nice manner of speaking and provided some good information.

Tends to be the way it goes whenever they have guests on.
Sometimes the guests speak and expatiate, sometimes they don't.
Maybe it's just the format of the show.
But listening to one another is a valuable skill, and I wish they weren't so eager to give their two cents each time a guest makes a strong point.

I stimulate the economy by getting off the DIY train. Since i am saving money by buying less I can afford to hire local help to do many projects that I would otherwise have done myself. I essentially buy time for myself and provide jobs for hard working contractors, handypeople, landscapers... etc.

I love shopping at the local farmers market every Saturday. I take $30 cash and leave my wallet in the car. This forces me to really think about what I need. I also have a rule with other purchases. If I cannot financially afford to buy something right then and their then I can't afford it. Regardless of the item. I don't own any credit cards, so this forces me to really think about what I genuinely need.

Well if there is no Christmas decorations, you can always do what your ancestors did: pray, gather with family and friends, walk on the street and look at the stars in the sky, seed some corn in plates, make a litle tree with clementines, light a bunch of candles on the windows, act a litle cplay with the children, use your imagination...

I had to stop drinking coffee because it had gotten really unhealthy for me. Instead, when I'm looking for a bitter boost I make homemade hot chocolate with about half the sugar the recipe calls for. It's a lot more work than tossing grounds in a pot which means I have to be very intentional about making it. It also means, since I really REALLY like my hot chocolate, it's been good incentive not to hit the local coffee shops .
Also, LOVE Overdrive. It's so useful and convenient ^_^

But whenever I want my chocolate fix, I always go to Dove. (I know its not the healthiest, but maybe down the line I'll make the healthier transition). Now if only I could make the switch to eating way LESS chocolate throughout the week.

I loved this, I will defiantly be watching Shelbizleee's you tube video's. Love the views on consumerism, since watching yourselves and other minimalists (over the last 10 years). I've come up with views on the retail industry and consumerism (which I work in).
My future thinking: What is the future of retail? Should the retail industry be shaping consumerism differently? Should we be focusing our industry to a fix it, re-sell, recycle approach? How can we be more transparent about our goods?
We could change the way we shop, move more to more places re-selling secondhand or mended. Our retailers could have branches where they fix more stuff and resell, they could still sell new, lots of people want new and shiny but there are many that want quality and can't afford the high prices, those of us (myself sometimes included in this) could buy the second hand produces at a reduced price and still subscribe to that brand.
I'm still creating my boundary's and reducing my consumption. I'm a recovering shopaholic so it's been a missive mindset change for me to become a more minimal consumer and clear my clutter. Thank you for your video's as they really do inspire the change.

I had a comment about buying groceries you don’t need. I am HORRIBLE for this! I grew up with my grandma’s example of basically buying anything and everything to fill all of her cupboards, chest freezer and fridge (which became so overstuffed that she actually got a second fridge which she keeps in another room!) she has a good heart and good intentions of always having lots of food to feed anyone who comes over and it fills her heart to do so. But... so much of her food, majority in her fridge or deep down in the bottom of the freezer, spoils or expires because it gets completely forgotten about. I have developed habits of just aimlessly shopping through the aisles and picking out everything that I love and that I “might” want to make soon... and half the time I forget what I was planning and it spoils before I get around to it.
I’m currently trying a new approach to begin minimizing my life, and groceries is an area I want to improve. This week I wrote out a meal plan for the week on a magnetic whiteboard and I wrote a list of all of the ingredients I need for those recipes only, and I stuck by it, and instead of spending say 200 or 300 or maybe more, (sometimes over $400 at Costco!!!! And it’s just myself and my boyfriend at home!) I got all of my groceries for $115 for the whole week AND work snacks (some healthy fruits and veggies). I felt so proud of myself to have a “plan”.
That would be my suggestion. I plan on doing this from now on! Yay to saving money and reducing waste! I love you guys and your podcast. I’ve only just discovered your content in the last month and I feel like I stumbled into a gold mine of everything I’ve been wanting to incorporate in my own life!! LOVED your documentary! I finally understand CONSUMERISM!!!!!!
So THANK you 🙏 looking forward to binge listening to your podcast 💕👏🏻

The item in itself was not that big but the box that it came in was ginormous and stuffed with this plastic air pocket material that was literally several feet long. It took me over five minutes to pop and and wrap up all of this plastic into a small ball. I contacted Staples to voice my concern but they couldn't care less.

Everyone has different ideas about what is important. Every time I move (considering move to state #17) I go through everything and pare down. Even though over the years I have improved my process to consider before acquiring items; there are still a few items that can be culled. My family however is always concerned that I might donate an item I could need in 5-10 years. (I have considered starting a PackRats Anonymous group for them which would require them to discard one item monthly and no one in the group could acquire any of the discarded items).

Was an awesome podcast as always but I expected to hear more from shelbi. She’s the main reason I made sure to listen to this specific episode.
Side note: do you have any advice on what to do about people that give you so many gifts all the time? My mother in law is from another country but she loves giving gifts especially for our baby because she feels it’s the only way she can feel close to her and to us since she lives so far away. But even when we lived in the same country she still did it. I’ve mentioned to her countless times and in different ways that although I appreciate her gifts and thoughtfulness that it’s just too much. Not only does it add more stuff into my home and make me more stressed by it but it also is stuff I usually don’t want and am expected to use. It’s also very bad for the environment in so many ways between the packaging and the items themselves as well as the way it’s transported to me. I don’t know if there’s any way to make the situation better because I’ve tried and I’ve tried to do it as nicely as I can but she just finds ways around it. It literally makes me have anxiety, stressed, and sometimes cry because I can’t handle the pure amount of things she sent me. I don’t dare have another kid or the boxes will become larger and more frequent.

Doe eyed beauty my mum in law is like this with our niece but I noticed since she has been getting photos of my nieces mum she hasn’t needed to send gifts as much. Another idea is to start a trust fund or to put the gift money aside to get a ticket to come visit you? Sending cards or letters can be a great way to connect, handmade ones are even better 😊

I like the idea of trying to restrain yourself to groceries with little to no plastic packaging. Think I'll start trying that; since it would place some automatic limits on grocery buying... also been trying to reduce my plastic consumption anyway

I have been going to a gym and pay almost 200/ month. I am almost at my goal weight and feel like I can handle it on my own but the community there is so amazing that I don't want to leave but I know I should because I could pay down on my debt faster and I don't want to slip back into my old unhealthy ways. What do you guys think? Help!

I always wondered what if we all ex changed things we didn't need but others need. I think there will always be stores to purchase things and yes I hate that long receipt at CVS. I get those 40% off coupons and i do use them on things that are expensive like jerky. I have 3 bins of Xmas stuff. I plan to get rid of some. I originally down sized when I moved from Portland Oregon and had to use the biggest moving truck and I also had a fantasy to travel in a RV but still own a small home on land like 800 sq ft , that is when I started getting rid of stuff. My first goal was 2 cars can fit in garage!!! I'm the only one on the street!!! I love Amazon and I just order what I need!! I buy way more browsing in stores.

I know someone who is a river enthusiast. He has a boat and basically spends every waking moment on the river. Great.
However, because of this, he collects boats. He goes to estate sales every weekend and if there is a boat figurine, he buys it.
Is this collecting? Is this obsession? He grew up poor, and I'm wondering if maybe by having these "things" it ensures that a person never is "without" ever again? I don't know, but I am happy for him, if it makes him happy. Your thoughts?

Just figurines? Or actual bigger boats as well? I think there's no harm in buying figurines. Maybe it's a lighthearted obsession at the same time, but at least it's something that's not harmful. People collect all kinds of stuff, figurines and whatnot. Maybe the Boat and the mini boats to him define who he think he is. He's a boat man.

I use face cloths you can get in a bulk pack at Walmart. It has 6 or 8 in a pack. They are Terry cloth fabric like a towel. The size typically is 10x10 inches.

CVS is WICKEDLY expensive. I don't go there anymore. Plus. I have heard some not so stellar things about how they treat their employees, so no CVS.

    • @LauraRahel
      @LauraRahel 5 лет назад +2

Sometimes they refer to their partners as their wives because its easier in conversation to convey the commitment of the relationship. If you say girlfriend or partner its usually not perceived the same way as wife. Could have gotten married (idk!) but I know sometimes they used the tern when not legally married :)

I've been a minimalist for over 7 yrs i love it and do not miss tons of stuff. I find it's actually hard to spend money now. I Walk out of stores with nothing. A lot of people don't understand it and think your suffering your not you have a freedom. Life is so much easier in all ways. Your more relaxed. You actually utilize the library. You have more quality time. I absolutley can not stand clutter and i do have what I need. And you are more greatful for what you do have. You think before you spend. You all are so informational thank-you.
