Javier creates such incredible backing tracks for Tosin to play over. They're both equally important to AAL. Plus he has the harder task of staying in rhythm with the drum poly's, while Tosin can miss a note and it gets lost in the shredding and hammer ons. awesome band. Javier kicks ass.
I love Javier because his music, as well as Tosin's, captures moods, emotions, and atmospheres in original and amazing ways. They have two different approaches to this and both work amazingly.
I hate how some people lower down in the comments are mocking this guy, he's actually really quite good. I'd love to see the idiots further down try to play this.
@@dragon___ Some Jazz guitarists like to do some solo guitar stuff with basslines and heck, some have even used a 7 string for that and I was taught that guitars with more strings than 6 where used in classical music a long time ago mainly because some guitar players wanted to have the range than pianos did for some songs. There is even a 10 string guitar player on Insta I have seen. 7 strings were even used in Jazz with solo playing before they were a hit for other genres. As for good solo playing and some bassline stuff, I'd for sure work on that more at some point since I have an 8 string and you can even do 6 string bassline stuff and make it work I think.
Javier is such a sick guitarist, this track is so enjoyable especially with the latin-blend that Javier incorporates. Can't wait for a new album from Mestis.
i agree, but not many people know mestis. animals as leaders is a much bigger name, and would give him more exposure. plus i also think for the sake of a shorter title, they meant javier reyes of animals as leaders performing...
I love the work that Javier and Tosin are doing with 8-strings. They're pushing metal and prog rock and jazz in a multitude of directions and show no signs of slowing down. It's a very exciting time to be a fan of this kind of music :)
I dont know why people dont realize how good he is , he was who tought Tosin to tab the guitar and make IT sound Like is a Bass , he plays classic spanish guitar and Tosin learn that from Him , props to Javier.
indeed and it's kind of a shame because tosin is one of the very, very few players than can overshadow him. had he been in another band, he would have been much more well known
This is nice on the ears. Such a good change from lots of different styles with something new, but semi-familiar. I like it... and those horns in the track. Current favorite.
Funny that I know jazzheads who says that this music (mestis) has nothing to do with jazz. Funny too that I know metalheads who says that this music has nothing to do with metal. The beauty of that kind of music is that it doesn't really have a name, It's something between progressive metal and jazz, with fusion, classical, and electronic influences... etc I would say that it's also this evolving and eclectic character that makes this music as much interesting as what you like with Deftones.
Great finger work on both hands Fantastic playing and skill Gotta show respect for something you can't do people!!. Playing something is one thing but creating it is another. Give respect plain simple .
So soothing. Such a fun jam. I don't even need to mention the prevalent musicianship . I'll be drumming to this for weeks before getting it tight.......
for all Axe FX users: the Amps are the USA Clean 1( Mesa Boogie MK4??) and the Boutique 2 (Matchless Chieftain w/Booster)... i have an awesome djent tone with the UK GC30 ( Laney GC30V) and FASModern Model with Rat Distortion and Plus Distortion in series..
Someone make this man as famous as Tosin! Just as damn good of a guitar player and clearly has his own chops in writing. Not even Akinator could guess that I was thinking Javier :/
They are EMG 808 X pickups. The dynamic response of those is hard to distinguish from good passive pickups. I wonder if a blind test would have drawn as many comments about active pickups as this video did. Doubt it.
I am 100% certain that i could hear the differance in a blind test. I've got a lot of experience with both high end emg's and high end passives like bare knuckles, there is a huge distinction.
Animals as Leaders is my favorite band. And guys like Hendrix, Satch, Vai, Van Halen, Petrucci, Guthrie Govan are some of my favorite musicians as well. But it's such a shame guys like Javier and Victor Wooten are so over-looked. Definitely the most underrated guitar players in the world. BTW, Javier's album is great. I picked it up the other day at FYE. I couldn't believe they even had it. Keep doing your thing Javier!
There is a sheer lack of rock and metal with horn arrangements in them (other than ska and A7X's piece of heaven). I love what Javier and T.R.A.M. is doing with these new sound combo's and styles.
I guess I can kind of see where some people don't like the sound of these pickups, but I fucking love them! This has a dirty... weird sound, in a good way. At least to my ears. To each his own. And I haven't listened to much Javier's stuff outside of AAL, but I'm really digging his style.
It's a real pleasure to watch and hear someone play a 7- 8 strings using all the strings.
+Nestor Centeno wise words dude
Wrong. Tosin is playing on the same rhythm AND adding notes that are purposefully in and out of key
Style: Dark Progressive Spanish Ethereal Ambient Metal
confusing
Isn't better to call it: Orgasm?
Dark Progressive Spanish Ethereal Ambient Orgasm?
It really is something to hear. Pushing those genre boundaries!!
Style: Javier Reyes
Next up: Tosin Abasi's "Po Tato".
***** That, my friend, is very funny.
rofl
just for the record, Te mato is spanish for I kill you.
Juan D Estrada isn't it 'you kill me?'
+Halfand8 You kill me is Tu Me Matas, or just, Me matas
Super under-rated musician. This man is a beast. His new album, Eikasia is the shit.
First like yourself those idiots are entitled to their opinion's.And I don't know who would want to play the crap.
Refreshingly evocative.Sounds different.Pretty fresh.Like this or not ,you can't deny the originality.
Not an original sound, but he knows the style, difficult to find someone who can evocate that sound like him. Chicano Style. Amazing
Bernardo Cassina he was the first to do it with the 8 string i think. and very well too
This is original as hell dude
Band name: Mestis
Album:Basal Ganglia
Song:Te Mato
LOL..Oh yeah that dude ^^..Yeah he doesn't know wtf he's talking about.Make no mistake, this is entirely original and unique to this musician.
3:19-3:30. That is one of the most melodic solos I have heard in awhile. There is so much emotion in his music. it really got me going haha
It's so sick how he almost does like a bass line while doing his lead chords.
Thats absolutely what it is!
classical training really does wonders musically
@@dragon___ for sure man
@@dragon___ Some Jazz guitarists like to do some solo guitar stuff with basslines and heck, some have even used a 7 string for that and I was taught that guitars with more strings than 6 where used in classical music a long time ago mainly because some guitar players wanted to have the range than pianos did for some songs. Hell ya Javier, I really am appreciative of musicians like yourself.
Tried covering this, only thing i can play is 1:10-1:13
This tune is the soundtrack for some cold blooded revenge
xD that part is the toughest bro ! xD
Best comment on the internet ever!
I get bored at work
XDDDDDDD
The tone on his low strings sounds amazing. It's so crisp and clear.
What an amazing musician poor guy never gets the credit he deserves, Always living in Tosins shadow.
Teague Atkıns Amazing for sure, but I think it is kinda trivial that it is Tosin who made their popularity possible at all.
Heavier Reyes
so many times i can over-listen that theme. thank you, Javier
Javier is such a sick guitarist, this track is so enjoyable especially with the latin-blend that Javier incorporates.
Can't wait for a new album from Mestis.
prog/djent with hispanic/spanish passion vibes... very personnal, emotionnal and interesting music!...
no such real thing as djent. how about just really cool heavy prog rock
This is Mestis song, not AAL, should've named the video accordingly.
i agree, but not many people know mestis. animals as leaders is a much bigger name, and would give him more exposure. plus i also think for the sake of a shorter title, they meant javier reyes of animals as leaders performing...
snufkin It is for there for the sake of marketing, and it's working
animals as leaders' ?
id love to hear an acoustic version
lol just a clean version in general would be awesome
the 'music major'
+Elif Dines is leaking throughout youtube
+Sean Rutledge yup he is
You're being sincere I hope.
I love the work that Javier and Tosin are doing with 8-strings. They're pushing metal and prog rock and jazz in a multitude of directions and show no signs of slowing down. It's a very exciting time to be a fan of this kind of music :)
Glad to know he's doing other stuff. Buying this album immediately and will probably listen to it 100 times in the next month.
im asuming if you didn't know about this album you don't have his newest one polysemy?
great track! the entire album is awesome. patiently waiting for new album
I dont know why people dont realize how good he is , he was who tought Tosin to tab the guitar and make IT sound Like is a Bass , he plays classic spanish guitar and Tosin learn that from Him , props to Javier.
I don't know why but i can't stop listen to this.
i feel like javier is a bit overshadowed in AAL by tosin cause he dont get the protagonism than he deserves, he is a wonderful composer...
MAN, i love this shit, its so emotive... and well composed
indeed and it's kind of a shame because tosin is one of the very, very few players than can overshadow him. had he been in another band, he would have been much more well known
its true, but indeed i prefer Javier way of composing, I mean, its not necessary to split up, they can coexist togheter in the same band...
this song is amazing, love it. its been stuck in my head for two weeks now. hope its not to long until he writes and releases a new album.
This is nice on the ears. Such a good change from lots of different styles with something new, but semi-familiar. I like it... and those horns in the track. Current favorite.
Then you don't have the musical ear to appreciate such well thought out, intelligently composed songs from people like Tosin, etc
The way Javier plays that trumpet is amazing
I'd love to hear this with just the guitar, and a cleaner tone! Javier really is the perfect complement to Tosin's jazzier approach.
well, tosin is actually not that jazzy, not because he plays altered chords and structures used in jazz music, it means he's a jazz player
Favio Villaseñor
....What?!?!?!
Favio Villaseñor Tosin has always said that he's been influenced a lot by jazz music to make his own sounds, that's enough for me.
Favio Villaseñor Alex Ramos didnt say that man, please read him again XD. He's not a jazz player, but has a jazz/fusion approach for sure
Next week on EMG TV:
Tosin Abasi - Po Tato
Sam Walker Best comment.
It would be awesome if Tosin would see this comment and actually do a great song called "Po Tato" xD
*THIEF!*
kkkkk you did not translate,.... te mato is "i kill you". And not a thing similar to potato kkkk
Awesome music Don Javier Reyes !!!!!!!!!!!
I really like the new cameraman. The timely editing and the full-body shots really help set the mood.
What's incredible is that he makes a chord that sounds like trumpets, unless thats just the back track lol
There are horns, but it still does sound like a horn
This song would make an Epic Dragon Ball Z fight
Love this guys sound. Need more.
He played with a broken clavicle a year ago at the Animalas as Leaders + Periphery tour. He's my hero.
***** Bach, Malmsteen, Loomis and Abasi all had broken hearts.. -_-
***** n1 lol
excelente show!! recuerdo a Javier sentado por lo de la clavícula.
crazy sounds coming out of that guitar. love it
Absolutely love the subtle use of the trumpet during certain parts
It's like progressive metal mixed with flamenco and big band music. I love it.
This song represents my thought process.. its soooo fucking extremely beautiful I can't put it in words... goddammit
We want more of this in AAL
Arsam S there's a reason why this is MESTIS, not AAL
Nice to see Javier getting some publicity! Definitely needs it.
Did not know of this guy until recently but such a great musician
Funny that I know jazzheads who says that this music (mestis) has nothing to do with jazz.

Que pedazo de musico es Javier Reyes. De lo mejor que hay en la actualidad sin dudas.
you are the best Javier!!!
Javier Reyes, the most underrated guitarist in the industry
Great finger work on both hands
Fantastic playing and skill
Gotta show respect for something you can't do people!!. Playing something is one thing but creating it is another. Give respect plain simple .

Jazz + Melodías Mexicanas + Distorsion = La Mejor etapa del metal en la Historia
Djent forever¡¡¡¡¡¡xD
Prog rules lml
This music fits perfect for a Tarantino's movie... The Great thing! (for real)
wonderful piece of music
"Te Mato" means "I kill you". Amazing song, in fact the entire Basal Ganglia EP is incredible as a whole. Javier is a wonderful guitarist!
for all Axe FX users: the Amps are the USA Clean 1( Mesa Boogie MK4??) and the Boutique 2 (Matchless Chieftain w/Booster)... i have an awesome djent tone with the UK GC30 ( Laney GC30V) and FASModern Model with Rat Distortion and Plus Distortion in series..
This is a combination of many styles. I sense jazz, progressive metal, classical, and others which I don't feel like naming.
Someone make this man as famous as Tosin! Just as damn good of a guitar player and clearly has his own chops in writing. Not even Akinator could guess that I was thinking Javier :/
Outstanding melody!
There are many underrated guitarists in the world
Love the horns in it, so cool.
Javier Reyes (Animals as Leaders) "Te Mato"en su guitarra de 8 cuerdas @EMGtv
They are EMG 808 X pickups. The dynamic response of those is hard to distinguish from good passive pickups. I wonder if a blind test would have drawn as many comments about active pickups as this video did. Doubt it.
Right on. Don't forget Intervals. Awesome band with beautiful melodies.
How have I never seen this. Wow
I am 100% certain that i could hear the differance in a blind test. I've got a lot of experience with both high end emg's and high end passives like bare knuckles, there is a huge distinction.

Wow!! That is amazing!!
This Guy know his stuff. Very nice.
Love the guitar
I like how he's not hitting the button of Hi-Gain again and again like all the other metal 8-stringers.
Funny thing is, he's heavily inspired by salsa/flamenco/other Hispanic music genres because that's what he grew up listening to.
Great stuff.
This is really great.
CAnt see how 89 people hate this song. It's beautiful
Lmfao
+Jonathan Wilson it's coz they are butthurt about the trumpets on the backing track
do you know Tosin and Javier play both in AAL? right?
I enjoy Javier's Mestis very much
TACO BURRITO BURRITO....and beautiful guitar playing Javier.
This guy on a 8 string guitar with his set up is a god damn orchestra
There is a sheer lack of rock and metal with horn arrangements in them (other than ska and A7X's piece of heaven). I love what Javier and T.R.A.M. is doing with these new sound combo's and styles.
Loving it. Has that classical guitar/Spanish guitar sound, but a bit heavier. Excellent. Sounds like theres some horns in there too.
Go, Javi, go!
What a masterpiece.
please make a playthrough of Menta as well
Que temaso !!!!!
Javier's the Mars Volta. This is pretty damned epic.
That was incredible!
what was the song in the intro?
+Victor Hernandez the same song he's playing on the video, "Te Mato"
Brilliant.....period
Creative... Awesome!
What was that intro song? pretty sick
Axe FX2 + EMG = Epic Win !
I guess I can kind of see where some people don't like the sound of these pickups, but I fucking love them! This has a dirty... weird sound, in a good way. At least to my ears. To each his own. And I haven't listened to much Javier's stuff outside of AAL, but I'm really digging his style.
Its E. Normally 8strings are F#BEADGBE but tosin and javier tune the 8th string to E to have extended chord phrasings.
I wouldn't like to make a stupid question, but how do you tune the 8th string? Is that in F# or in G?
Thank you for your answers.
Well, that's something original. Loved.
Thank you.
This just convinced me to buy the EP!
Excellent!
