Music is not bound by a system like 20 push-ups or something like that. Music is free and it flows perfectly if you let it flow. But this.... This is other-worldly!
That reminds me of when I saw a band called "Oxes" many years ago. Small club, small stage, and they have wireless units on their guitars. I'm thinking, "What the hell they need that for?" Then they started playing. And running. Up to the mezzanine, into the lobby, into the friggin' bathroom, even! Didn't even miss a note. It was like Metallica on PCP. And this guy just plays it like an android. Pure economy of motion and emotion.

Tosin opened the door for a whole new generation of bigger than life guitarists as far as i can see. Steve Vai also aknowledged this. His dedication and discipline are really staggering. All hail to the next generation of virtuosos
I've played off and on for 50 years and I am extremely humbled. His style is flawless, his technic is flawless, his blending of triplets and appegios are incomparable. His hypersonic speed blows me away. I don't think u could crank a metronome fast enough to time. There is a new sheriff in town! He is Tosin Abasi!!!!
I suppose it makes sense. Solomon was the best king of Israels son, and had to follow in his footsteps, so he prayed and God asked him what did he want? He said, wisdom. The wisdom led to a lot of money, a lot of people seeking him out for legal advice and life advice. He wrote a book full of proverbs and other books about the meaning of life and our purpose. You can sense the technicality and brain power that went into this song, the sweeping ups and downs of emotion, the sadness, the excitement.
I love it how Tosin Abasi combines prog, metal and jazz, and than the fact that he plays on an 8 string guitar, he really is one of the most remarkable guitarists of his generation
This man's musical compositions move me. Such care and effort in every note. The time required to perfect such songs is staggering and he shares those private moments of practice with us when he plays. I am grateful.
Tosin Abasi is incredible. You don't have to "understand" it to like it. The people saying it's not good because it's too complex so people can't understand it can go shit in their own mouths. 194 people have no appreciation for an extravagantly complex and well-executed piece of art. I'm sure you all understand every in and out of every one of Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, etc paintings too.
Don't act like dick, they have right not to like it or understand it. I like Tosin Abasi, but even I think he goes overkill sometimes (not in this song though, this one's perfect for me). You don't know, who those 194 people were, so don't judge.
Pushkar Sarkar In this context, I find it difficult to say that it is "too complex". Also, who said "forced"? I just said that it was stupid, not saying to force them to like it. Many people do things for stupid reasons, disliking this music because it is "too complex' is one of them.
it's like metal shouldn't evolve and people want to have 100% heavy metal acts like Iron Maiden etc. Since modern (so called "art-") music became a very experimental field of various polyrythms and an overall highly complex structure (just like paintings of modern artists), why shouldn't metal and jazz, as it's both known for its experimental joy, take that step?
TOSIN - You have surpassed all the greats before you; Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Lifeson, Gilmour, Beck, Santana, Iommi, Walsh, to name a few. We are in the midst of a historic evolution in guitar mastery. Tosin, you have taken the guitar to a new level unattainable by all your predecessors. Mr Abasi, You are INCREDIBLE!!!!!
NO WAY!!! Tosin playing is technically awesome, creative and unique, however I think he lacks a very important aspect of guitar which all of the people you mentioned have discovered...knowing how to use the notes (pitch) between the notes. Tosin very seldom bends strings, and has a timid vibrato and feel. Nuance is what I think his playing is missing but he is definitely worth listening to.
LOL!!! Yes you're right but, when using jazz concepts in a progressive style or fusion that should not limit him to omit bending! I was also addressing the comment that he had surpassed all the greats which is naive and far from being true. I bet everything I own that Tosin would even wholeheartedly agree with me.
Thanks for our opinion Lou, as shallow as it is. It's always good for a laugh. While I'm doubled over laughing at your pathetic reasoning and a attention seeking behavior, go ahead and kiss my ass.
+Delta Blues Whoa dude!? Wow, how immature! Shallow? How? I identified what I honestly thought he lacks, I didn't attack him or criticize him in a low demeanor or shallow way ( kind of like you just did to me). Progressive metal makes me wish I had picked up guitar. I play piano, and don't regret it for a moment. But if I had known about this music ten years ago, I'd be playing guitar just as well as piano. Oh well, I guess I'll just keep on practicing guitar! I'll get better eventually :3
Keep up with piano! There is so much to explore in the progressive metal genre with piano/keyboard work. Everyone has their instrument. Just take your instrument and find your own progressive voice! :)
And do not think you have to play extremely technically to be a progressive metal player! Meshuggah for example. The actual playing is extremely simple. Their complexity comes from the insane meters and polyrythyms they have going on. But also, the piano/keyboard/synths and such are absolutely acceptable instruments in prog. In fact my band is searching for a keyboard player. You people are hard to find!
***** That's not true, but yes, going through the struggles of learning an instrument definitely makes you appreciate masterful players like Abasi a lot more.
Lol, that's a great thing to say to people. "YOU'LL NEVER BE AS GOOD AS THIS GUY' I don't fancy the sound of a 8 string guitar. I don't mind Abasi, I just don't like the kind of music he plays. the first time i watched this video 8 or 9 years ago, i didnt know how to react. and now i have been coming back and forth to this video again and again. this dude was way ahead of its time.
Listening to Tosin play is like listening to a graph of a chaos equation......it sounds chaotic, but if you concentrate, there is an implicit order that emerges from it. So subtle in its bombasticity.
The only problem here is RUclips commentators offering their negative opinions without actually proving they can play "better" than Tosin Abasi. If you really think he is doing it wrong, post a video of you doing it right and earn the right to be annoyingly correct. Otherwise, stop ruining it for people who support him and go watch your "better" videos. I can guarantee your remarks will not make Mr. Abasi play what you want him to play, or make his supporters care what you think.
I'm a very eclectic listener, but my admiration for metal was not too high...until I heard this guy. He's the REAL DEAL. I'm not sure I can listen to another guitarist the same way, after hearing Mr. Abasi render his craft . . . . .....
Nothing in life is ever just handed to you. Progress and desires and dreams are made by getting off your butt, getting inspired and practicing your guitar, and don't forget to have fun! Everyone has their own voice in music, if you enjoy the sound of this then maybe try to mimic it and then put your own spin into it. Don't give up my friend, music is the best thing in the world
This guy is one of the pioneers in this decade. Looking forward to more from him for sure. Fellow 8-stringer here as well, so much freedom on that fretboard for those of us who like multiple disciplines, ornamentation, with a full sound.
socialdef3 Oh, I do. But it's still nice to see how other people do it and get nice sounds. Just like you'd wanna know what techniques or gear some player you like uses. Not unoriginal, just learning from people who are good at what they do.
I love it - if someone is good at an instrument and unleashes their full arsenal, they're showing off. If someone can and does play fast, they have no soul. As if these conditions were mutually exclusive. Should skilled musicians cap their abilities so as not to offend your acclimatisation to ordinariness? The irony is that the people who level these kinds of shallow accusations do so on the basis that there is "real" music and that the people who like what they don't like don't get "it". Can fans of pop music not say the same to you? I love metal but I hate its "fans" (the quotation marks are a clear hint that I understand and wish to undermine the general nature of my statement). The need they feel to belong to cliques is childish and off-putting. Literally, every metal music video I watch is riddled with comments about how something is too fast, or too slow or whatever. When will people realise - there is music you like and music you don't like. That is all. And that is not an objective measure upon which factual conclusions can be based.
Margerine Sun damn dude your vernacular is off the charts. Also, i fully agree with you. Too many people concluding things without ground to stand on for further discussion. To those people i’d like to say: try it yourself before judging. If you won’t, move on and find music you do like.
+Serpo71 DO you smoke crack? LOL If Johnson was alive he would SO NOT play this type of music. It's an awsome style for sure but Johnson would make his money playing what he loved,
I know this is a guitar playthrough, but I feel like Matt Garstka doesn't get enough recognition for his role as drummer in this band. I know Tosin Abasi is an absolutely incredible guitarist, and people get off and just understanding what he is playing, but the same def goes for the drumming. There is some incredible musicianship going on there, but if I hear someone talk about AAL, the first thing that follows is either "they are so complex" or "Tosin Abasi is so good at guitar" I think its because no one remembers the name Garstka. Hell, I had to google it
He's definitely a great drummer. He just get's overshadowed by Tosin a lot. Hard not to be, considering how crazy the latter's musicianship is. But yeah, Tosin's not the only monster in the band, just the most well-recognized one.
I think that makes sense. Still bothers me. I saw Matt Garstka did a video with Drumeo reccently, and I'm not sure why, but Jared Falk seemed rather dismissive of what Matt had to say
Even though the drummer is really sick, there are still many others that could fill his position. If Tosin quits, that's it for AAL. Because no one in the world seems to write music like he does.
DestroyerOfWorlds6 haha you guys havent been fans for too long huh? matt is one of many talented drummers that have jammed w this band, the drummer you hear in this song, and on all the old shit, is the masterful Navene Koperweis!!! who now does his own thing as a solo artist but youre right, tosin is one of a kind, but i wouldnt worry about him quitting, because AAL is "him", if that makes sense. it is the band representation of what he wants to do musically!
Nope... Even him and Steve Vai said also that musical theory forces you to make bounded music and also boring. Everything comes from your soul. It's how you want your guitar to sound. NO LIMITS!
***** Also as random fact.. i've finished 8 grades of musical theory so i'm not careless at all :) Just that i don't use it too much. I use like 5% of what i've learned. Everytime i play music in my mind has no theoretical approach. It just goes on...
***** The problem comes when people start to use theory as a set of rules, rather than a set of tools. It's the link between the theory and the expression it provides that people often overlook. ie. if you want something to sound darker, you can make the CHOICE to work within a darker scale or emphasise more dissonant intervals (b2 b5, etc). Want to create a feeling of uneasiness or restlessness? Use complex time sigs. You don't HAVE to do any of these things, as you know, but it gives people options. There are plenty of people who get by wonderfully without theory, but if it gets used and DOES limit a musician, then that's more of a reflection on them than the theory itself.
I truly believe this gentleman and his group are indeed three geniuses. Yes I believe his other guitarist and drummed are (like him) absolutely brilliant. Much respect to you and your group sir.
This music is more about technicality than feeling to me, The faster and more complex the fills are the better , I use to like this music a lot I even played it a little, but it became a sport to me like everybody is trying to be faster and more complex than everyone else, I still respect their technical ability though I'm into the less is more now And feeling even if is just two notes
jefflh11237 I like technical stuff a lot, such as this, but I do have to agree with you. I personally love when a musician or a group of musicians can make fantastic songs with a simplistic yet creative approach to music. I also have grown a strong liking to the mix of jazz and progressive metal, like Plini and Sithu Aye. I love their music because while there is arguably a lot of technicality, it's passionate and full of soul. Just great stuff to jam out to.
+jefflh11237 Its my opinion only, but I dont really agree , because if i listen to AAL i always close my eyes and it feels like i'm in another universe or something like i never felt before . Maybe it's just me but i really enjoy it
Well, everythang's relative. Maybe in the future there will be a guitarist that is miles, miles ahead of Tosin in every possible way...will Tosin still be a "good guitarist"? Yeah, I'd say so.

I bet he can't even play the solo to Lollipop from Lil Wayne
+Ian The Conqueror me too
Nice one
I don't know how to like a comment on my phone but this will have to be the substitute
But then again, who CAN play it?
lmfao
This man isn't human. He is a Metal God that has come down to teach us the truth.
hugeee!!! really awesome, i can feel the emotion, good music
Tosin spends every night praying to Djod.
He perfectly harmonizes and plays in time and in key with with the stage monitor the whole time! Amazing!
0:38 I actually find the right hand more impressive than the left
He's ridiculously good
He does a lot of economy picking, which is the shortest path to the next note opposed to strict alternate up down style.
I'm a very eclectic listener, but my admiration for metal was not too high...until I heard this guy. He's the REAL DEAL. I'm not sure I can listen to another guitarist the same way, after hearing Mr. Abasi render his craft . . . . .....
You should listen Polyphia 🙂
His music (and fedora) are making me euphoric
I've accepted that I'll never play like that, so can I just be in that kind of shape and dress like that? Thanks.
Don't give up my friend, music is the best thing in the world
With an attitude like that you’ll never get anywhere
Practice bruh
I find myself fallin into this song every few months. I especially love the way those chords sound...damn Tosin
Legend.
I've been watching this video since 2010. Shit is so good!
This guy is one of the pioneers in this decade. Looking forward to more from him for sure. Fellow 8-stringer here as well, so much freedom on that fretboard for those of us who like multiple disciplines, ornamentation, with a full sound.
Yay, an Axe-FX. I wanna steal all his patches
create your own patches, don't be unoriginal
socialdef3 Oh, I do. But it's still nice to see how other people do it and get nice sounds. Just like you'd wanna know what techniques or gear some player you like uses. Not unoriginal, just learning from people who are good at what they do.
charly88888888 excellent response.
socialdef3
Thanks :)
charly88888888 the entire series of comments here is amazing. why can't everyone on youtube talk to each other the way you two did?
Funny how he takes odd chords and makes them sounds great. This guy's a genius!
Almost 40 and crying during listening... Really happy to see Tosin playing, really happy with this music. Everytime since I found AAL...
But can he play "Smoke on the Water"?
chiefmachine24 thanks for the laughs mate
lmfaoooo bruh
no, he can't, because he has forgotten basic and intermediate guitar theory
+chiefmachine24 :)
he propably can play that riff parallel to playing another 5 classic riffs at the same time
He's so good and so hot, 11 years later even more so, wth TwT
awesome! Playing to the note ,not missing once to the recorded album! absolute perfection! this music talks to my soul!
2:05 this is not from this world. This is from universe!
There's way too many egomaniacs in this comment section. Just listen to the music for crying out loud
nirvanabeatle1 yea lol
everyone is a know it all..... I guess everyone's a musical genius here(sarcasm)
He is from another planet ! Mind blown!!
He just sidesweeps non stop!
ahahaha He loves his job
Y are you so mad tho
can't agree more dude, absolutely true 1000%
This album definitely changed my view on guitar playing a lot. This song in particular started my love for those big colorful chords.
He's the Robert Johnson of century XXI.
Yees!!!
***** What?!
***** I think the comparison was more along the lines of them both being the most innovative/talented guitarist of the era.
+Serpo71 DO you smoke crack? LOL If Johnson was alive he would SO NOT play this type of music. It's an awsome style for sure but Johnson would make his money playing what he loved,
+Matheus S.Verde that's fuckin racist as shit. I'm outta here.
How much does this guy practice fucking hell!
Jason Voorhees The Entheos vocalist, Chaney Crabb said she used to live with him and he'd practice 8 hours a day or something along those lines.
first AAL video i ever saw...was amazing. still love watching it and playing the intro till this day.
DestroyerOfWorlds6 haha you guys havent been fans for too long huh? matt is one of many talented drummers that have jammed w this band, the drummer you hear in this song, and on all the old shit, is the masterful Navene Koperweis!!! who now does his own thing as a solo artist
but youre right, tosin is one of a kind, but i wouldnt worry about him quitting, because AAL is "him", if that makes sense. it is the band representation of what he wants to do musically!
***** yeah in other words misha is the shit
Musical Theory & Practice, Practice, Practice !!!! :)
Nope... Even him and Steve Vai said also that musical theory forces you to make bounded music and also boring. Everything comes from your soul. It's how you want your guitar to sound. NO LIMITS!
*****
I know. But... if you put too much theory in your music, it might be a mistake. You need expression beyond any numbers.
*****
Also as random fact.. i've finished 8 grades of musical theory so i'm not careless at all :) Just that i don't use it too much.
***** You need to know the rules to break the rules.
I truly believe this gentleman and his group are indeed three geniuses. Yes I believe his other guitarist and drummed are (like him) absolutely brilliant. Much respect to you and your group sir.
this sounds exactly as it sounds in the album
Also look at the angle of his picking thumb.
OMG... i died thats crazy
My thumb is also like that
First heard this band around 2011. I am still obsessed. Parrhesia is a masterpiece. But, you always find yourself going back to the start again.
jazz n speed metal combined
From 2:38 to 3:02 Unnnghn...dat resolution!
His songs make me so nostalgic and melancholic. I have no idea why someone help.
Didn't know Pharrel Williams was such a sick guitarist
Since when did Pharrell Williams play guitar in a progressive metal band?
Loooooooool hahahaha
Can this song be more beautyfull? Oh men, what a ride i've have with that main riff! It gives me chills.
This music is more about technicality than feeling to me,
The faster and more complex the fills are the better , I use to like this music a lot I even played it a little, but it became a sport to me like everybody is trying to be faster and more complex than everyone else, I still respect their technical ability though
I'm into the less is more now
And feeling even if is just two notes
jefflh11237 As far as technical music goes, this is quite the emotional roller coaster
jefflh11237 I like technical stuff a lot, such as this, but I do have to agree with you.
Maybe it's just me but i really enjoy it
If only BET aired something like this or MTV for that matter.
Damn what a powerful display of total control of the guitar. Bringing it as hard as a freight train...unstoppable. Incredible performance!
And I actually thought that I was good at playing guitar. Shame on me...
***** THANK YOU
Well, everythang's relative. Maybe in the future there will be a guitarist that is miles, miles ahead of Tosin in every possible way...will Tosin still be a "good guitarist"? Yeah, I'd say so.
Jim Major What Jim said...It's about passion
..I was staring at his thumb the entire time.
Wow!! Blows my mind every time imagine Tosin 20 years from now! HOLY SHIT!!
Can he play "smoke on the water?"...
hahaha
I bet he really can't. It would be such a waste.
#fuckthatshitsong
#thatsactuallyanawesomesong #tosinmorethanlikelyenjoysdeeppurple #guitarcentermadeyouhatethatsong
"Tempting Time" is my "smoke on the water !
