    Another thing that makes this movie so mature and complex: It is one of the very few Disney movies without an antagonist, because Kenai is his own antagonist.

    • @AuraLeafstorm
      @AuraLeafstorm 5 месяцев назад

      This movie definitely does have an antagonist, and it's Denahi. What the movie doesn't have is a villain. Those two words mean different things.

    I love the positive masculinity in this story. The lesson Kenai learned was that love is just as important for men and masculinity, and that love is more than romance. It punishes violence- violence that stems from a place of insecurity and a sense of weakness- with forcing him into a caring role that led him to understand his own responsibility and the way love shaped his life, and led him away from a really dark path of revenge and cruelty.

    The fact you didn't see the plot--twist coming concerning Koda's mother makes that moment so much more impactful as well, so it was nice seeing that in someone else's reaction. I also love your post-reaction analysis. Keep up the stellar work, man.

    • @SusanaCanales1

      Yup. Agreed. People usually figure it out so it kinda ruins the reaction when the twist comes up so this was great. That moment he realizes was great.

    I think that Kenai becoming a bear was also a sacrifice for Koda. Koda forgave him, and he keep being a bear in order to take care of Koda. Same thing that Sitka did when he was the older brother.

    One little detail I love about this movie is that when you first see the bear it's eyes are black and make it look like a monster. But by the end when you see Koda's mother again her eyes aren't black anymore because Kenai doesn't see bears as monsters.

  • @raquelsoto6023

    I love that conclusion you came up with "lack of communication leads to violence". I hadn't thought about that.

    • @nickreacts6394
      @nickreacts6394  2 года назад +8

      It reminds me of a quote from the movie Nightcrawler: "...these experts have identified communication as the number one key to success." Now, in that movie the line is being delivered by a sociopath, but I think there is a lot of real world truth in valuing communication, and that it often be an effective remedy to many problems

  • @beardlessdragon
    @beardlessdragon 2 года назад +73

    "Those monsters are really scary, especially with those sticks" and "It's partly about a man and partly about a bear, but mostly, it's about a monster" are the most raw, emotional lines in this movie for me and I love how the second thematically ties into Kenai's character journey of recognizing that it's all about perspective and his actions made him the monster of that situation

  • @insignia9325
    @insignia9325 2 года назад +91

    Sitka let Denai right to Kenai so Kenai would experience the full responsibility he had. When Denai attacks him and is about to stab him, he doesn't fight back anymore. Not for himself.
    But when Koda appears, his parental / brotherly instinct kicks in, just what Koda's mom experienced. Sitka was a good brother... but hacking cruel.

    My favourite Disney movie! Incredible score, emotionally devastating and memorable - I don’t know what more you could want. I love the parallels in this movie, especially during the ‘Family’ song where three young bears stand and reach for the birds, exactly the same way as the three brothers during the opening song ♥️ Joaquin Phoenix is an incredible voice actor 🙂 glad you enjoyed, loved the commentary!

I always loved the scene showing sitka reuniting with his brothers and Koda reuniting with him mum one more time. That part was extremely comforting to me after I lost my grandma as a child.

    And its beautiful to see that all the three brothers fullfilled their totens in the end. Sitka was guidance and he guided his brothers along their journey, Kenai fullfilled his by staying with the bears to raise Koda with brotherly love and Denai was wisdom and he says in the end that he shared the wisdom of his brother's journey

    this movie is so beautiful. I feel like Sitka purposefully led Kenai to Koda because he knew that Koda needed a caregiver and it was a way of having Kenai make up for what he had done: taking away Koda's mother. he could also learn a lesson from the experience at the same time. so happy you were able to pick up on all the lessons this movie had to offer and that you enjoyed it as well ❤️

    The full conversation between Kenai telling Koda what happened was a deleted scene that can be found here on RUclips, I feel like the scene would’ve hit harder if it was a mix of the two. Don’t get me wrong, the scene still hits hard as is but I think the actual scene should’ve been included in the movie. Overall, I enjoyed your reaction to the movie and I hope you can eventually react to The Road to El Dorado (as Traffic Junky put in the comments earlier).

    I really love the loving relationship that all three brothers had in this movie. So many times shows and movies depict sibling relationships as needlessly cruel under the guise of “teasing” and while these brothers loved to give each other crap, there was genuine love there.

    it really is underrated. it's such a beautiful story about love, forgiveness and understanding. no matter how many time's I've watched it, it still makes me cry like a baby. I really feel for Denahi who isn't spoken about enough, having to lose two brothers in such a short period of time, full of anger and grief that he became the person he warned Kenai not to be, and his selflessness to agree with Kenai staying as a bear after finding out he was still alive just so he could remain beside Koda. that takes a lot of heart. all 3 brothers are truly amazing and of course little Koda. he really understood both sides of such a tragic situation and chose in his heart to forgive. [he didn't have to].

    This i such a beautiful movie both literally and figuratively. Glad you watched it with us. ❤🌟
    Kenai transforming into a bear again is a sort of redemption for killing the mother: He took a caregiver away, so now he becomes a new caregiver for Koda. I think it was needed for his journey to be complete. It's also a true act of love, so it's where his Totem leads him. Did you catch that the old man telling the story in the beginning is Denahi? His Totem is wisdom, and he shares the wisdom of his brother's story.
    Also the elk brothers always manage to make me laugh, even if they are so obviously the comic relief. 😊

    I know this was made a while ago but I wanted to say this because almost no one else ever does when reviews of this movie comes up. Joaquin Phoenix who played Kenai lost his real brother before this movie was filmed. They said his lamenting screams in the recording booth during Sitka’s death were too intense for younger viewers so they cut it out.

    Here’s some fun facts about Brother Bear, though some of you already them.
    -Koda is played by Jeremy Suarez aka Jordan from The Bernie Mac Show.
    -D.B Sweeney, the actor who plays Sitka, previously played in Disney’s Dinosaur as Aladar.
    -Denahi is played by Jason Raize, who is well known for being part of the original Broadway cast of The Lion King, where he played as Simba.
    -In the early stages of production, it was under two different titles; Shadow Bear and Bears.
    -Kenai was originally gonna have an older brother figure named Griz. But got replaced with Koda cause the execs figured it’s best that Kenai have a younger brother figure.

  • @maryhughes6372

    Kenai was voiced by Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin’s big brother died from an accidental drug overdose in the early hours of Halloween 1993. Joaquin was there and called 911. Unfortunately it was too late. The Phoenix family is and has been vegan since the mid 70s. This movie came out ten years, to the month, since River (his brother) died.

    What i find to be the most emotionally impactful part of this movie is the fact that Joaquin Pheonix, who voices Kenai, DID really lose a brother. One of the creators of this film even said that this role helped him work thru some of his grief. But when i watch that scene where hes still looking for Sitka, him screaming his name makes my heart ache every time😥💔

    This is my second fav Disney movie,and my fav 2D Disney movie,and I love how you dissected it,your post-reaction thoughts are always great!
    So,Sitka led Denahi to Kenai for all that to happen,and when he saw Kenai protecting and going to sacrifice himself out of love for Koda,turned him back into a human.
    Now,the thing is,was he gonna turn Kenai back into a human anyway? Even if he still didn't learn his totem lesson or just Koda didn't show up? Or is the movie implying an even darker alternative,which is that Sitka was willing to let Kenai be killed by the brother?

    Not to mension smilodons hunted in oacks even tho one of them coukd kill a bear they tended to hunt mammoths, mastadons, hiant sloths , elk and bison
    But thats not even as bad as it gets their also ambush oredators that go for the neck
    A creature that on its own could kill a grizzly bear in a honourable fight, now add 6 more and make it a sneak attack

    I liked Brother Bear so much when I was younger (and I also felt it was SO underrated) that I had a really hard time liking Merida, as the story of her mother turning into a bear felt way to close too this story. Plus, Merida's reluctance to marry was also something I'd seen so often before. There wasn't much that intruigued me about "Brave", although I can see why people would like it.
    Brother Bear really gets me all the time, especially Kenai telling Koda the truth. I still have the original soundtrack and listen to it from time to time.

    Ah yes, the "Cult Classics." The animated films that The Walt Disney Company (WDC), in all their glorious almighty wisdom, deemed unwatchable, unworthy of advertising, and lacking in everything needed to be put on their golden pedestals. Case why few people know about or have seen them. However, that doesn't mean they're bad. Far from it. Most of these films are some of the best pieces of art, animation, and acting by Disney. But like your title says, they're criminally underrated:
    - A Goofy Movie (1995)
    - Anastasia (1997)
    - Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
    - Brother Bear (2003)
    - Encanto (2021)

    - The Corpse Bride (2005)
    - The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
    - The Fox and the Hound (1994)
    - The Great Mouse Detective (1992)
    - The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
    - The Princess and the Goblin (1991)

    You should do the sequel to this too. This movie rates right up there at the top of my favorites Disney list.
