    Something that this movie did that I really like is that Metro Man isn’t made to be a bad person. Usually movies that have bad guys becoming good guys by the end have this whole thing where the initial “good guy” was secretly a bad person the whole time. This movie, however, just had Metro Man wanting to be his own person, apart from the idealized hero that the city viewed him as. He even encourages Megamind to rise up as the hero, and is proud of him when the city finally accepts him.

    To answer your question: Megamind and Despicable Me were both released in 2010, about four months apart. Despicable Me was the first of the two, but considering how near each other they were released, it's highly unlikely that either one inspired the other---just two movies with a similar premise that were released roughly at the same time. Sadly, Despicable Me was the more successful of the two and therefore the one that spawned a whole franchise. Somewhere out there is a parallel universe where we have three Megamind movies, two Minion movies and just the one Despicable Me movie haha. Great reaction as always!

      Yeah thanks for filling me in! One of my patrons informed me, and I just thought it was crazy that they both came out so close together (and perhaps that might have hurt Megamind in the box office unfortunately...) And no shade to Despicable Me, but next time I'm crossing into different universes, I'm checking out those Megamind sequels!

    • @ScreamingScallop
      @ScreamingScallop 2 года назад +27

      It used to be a successful movie inspired a slew of ripoffs; now studios spy on each other to push out competing big-hits. And as good as _Megamind_ may be, it's hampered by multiple issues--Dreamworks was still working the kinks out of its character designs (somehow Bernard looks weirder than any human in _Monsters vs Aliens),_ the "Marlon Brando in _Superman"_ reference was already obscure in 2010, the cast is _astonishingly_ small for a huge epic, and _Despicable Me_ has the whole heartwarming-slash-cute factor while _Megamind_ has skintight leather. As lovable as Minion is, he couldn't compete with those accursed Minions. (Ironically, _Wreck-It Ralph_ would come crashing out two years later and nail the "I don't want to be the bad guy anymore" plot better than either of its predecessors.)

      @@nickreacts6394 I think another reason Megamind didn't do so hot was due to the marketing. It was made out to be all about the epic battles between Megamind and Metro Man so as not to spoil the twist of Metro Man "dying" within the first ten minutes, but since people thought it was just going to be a generic superhero movie, they didn't go see it in the first place.
      And if you ever get to one of those universes, open a portal, would you?

  • @sarcasticat6979

    Metroman was technically Megamind's first real friend. He always played along with the hero vs villain skit, but never really hurt Megamind. He also (seemingly) never captured and jailed Minion, which always allowed Megamind an avenue to escape and play the game again. With how the warden acts in some scenes, I wonder if he also was playing along to some extent.

  • @chris...9497

    MetroMan said it best: He never had a choice.
    When he did, he chose a quieter, more private life. Turns out Megamind was better suited to public life (though he has to get used to receiving praise).
    A better lesson from this film is that you can overcome your programming.
    Both these characters (MetroMan and Megamind) were programmed from before leaving their home planets to be what they were and on Earth the feedback and expectations continued the programming. But MetroMan broke his and went off to have a quiet life. Then Megamind went in an entirely different direction.
    Tighten never had programming; he went directly to what he was, just supercharged.

  • @ryanakers1372

    Fun detail: Metroman's soul searching was foreshadowed all the way back at the beginning of the movie. When Megamind yells, "Fire!" to Minion while Metroman is in the Observatory there is a cut that shows the whole scene from the perspective of the people of Metrocity and if you watch very closely you can see a single frame where Metroman blinks out of the Observatory and appears behind Megamind.
    And thinking about it Metroman's greatest superpower is continuity. That millisecond soul search from our perspective looked like hours for Metroman and yet he returned to the exact perfect spot he left with the exact perfect match to the facial expression he had when he left.

      Humm. I was going to say that he would have had a little bit of a guide seeing that his last position was caught on camera, and at least he could look at it while he tried to get the right pose and facial expression(it’s still ridiculously freaking impressive given those conditions), but that’s not true, since the last camera click was of himself behind megamind.
      While I was thinking of the camera, I started to question if it was actually even possible for him to read all of those books. In order to see a constant image and therefore to read, you would have to be moving slower than the speed of light. But in order to not completely disappear from the camera for a frame, he would have to finish doing all of those things and reading all of those books within a 60th of a second for a camera at 60fps. Im not sure if light is fast enough for that to happen. Its highly possible that it’s fine because light is stupidly fast, but I would like to run the numbers given a chance

    27:47 I took that line in a slightly different way. I didn't think he was being hypocritical. I felt like it was more of "You had all the opportunities to be a hero and to loved by people and you just threw them away" cuz he never had those opportunities. People just decided he was bad from the start, so when he sees Hal squander his opportunity for being a hero he's like bro fr? He couldn't believe how Hal Could throw away could be so selfish and just toss aside something Megamind has wanted his whole life. Acceptance and approval.
    Megamind never did anything for personal gain. He was forced into the role of bad guy and figured "welp might as well be the bad guy since I can't be anything else."
    Megamind was never given the opportunity to be anything more than a bad guy. Hal was given all the opportunities and he just threw them away.

      Almost true in everything...except for a couple of details from Megamind's part:
      1. He "created" Tighten for no reason. He just wanted to keep on playing his games. It would have partially made sense if being a villain was a sort of professional occupation, but it's not. Funny enough, he does say at some point that the way Tighten uses his powers "is not professional". And of course being a villain can give you some economic benefits...but certainly not legal.
      2. Identity theft. I get why he changed his appearance to look like Bernard. I understand that he did what he did because that was his first chance to be normal and feel loved...but he should have told Roxanne the truth instead of continuing deceiving her. I genuinely think that after his argument with Minion he started planning to do it (his conversation during the last date is a hint)... but he should have decided that on the first place, or at least, sooner.

      @@nobleconsejera5278 There is a moment in the dating montage where Megamind-as-Bernard cleans up the city for her and then says "maybe Megamind isn't so bad". I'm still trying to figure out what his plan was here (if any), since he gave his alter ego no credit. Either he had planned to unmask himself "eventually" - the kind of eventually that you always procrastinate on but hey you promised to yourself so it counts right?.. - or this was the moment where he truly began to become selfless in his affection.

Both receiving superpowers due to a scientific chemical, feeling a big sense of entitlement for love and attention they believes they deserve, just because they're powerful enough to get away with anything, only to become evil out of petty reasons. Not to mention the quote: "All you're gifts, your powers, and you squander them for your own personal gain?!", sums up both of them.

    I like that metroman chose Musik-it's the only thing where his powers can't help him
    He had to learn this by himself
    Also none of them had chose their role in society by the self-metroman became a hero because everyone was expecting him to be a hero and megamind-well, we have seen his villian origin story
    Also I have seen an interesting theory: people were so tough to megamind because they needed him to become a villian to be sure metroman becomes a hero
    We can see that there is no way to stop someone with his powers (and we can see what Hall could do with them and he even wasn't in a full control) so if metroman decided to be a villian it would be a complete disaster
    That's why metroman was raised in the prison and why he was sent in the same school as a metroman and also teacher from the beginning wasn't so... Happy about metroman spinning her with the table but he "is a good guy" so she pretended that everything was okay

    A little over a decade ago, me and my fiancee (my now-wife!) were going through our ADHD-binging of this movie several times a day every single day, and while this was happening we wound up finding a really young kitten in the bushes -- we took care of her but no momma cat ever came for her and she was very clearly not someone's pet, so we wound up keeping her. She had a white face (it's no longer white, it changed as she grew up) and little dark tabby markings around the white, and so of course we named her Minion. Right now, she's flopped over lazily next to me while I watch this, and a few times she woke up and looked around because she heard her name. Having this show up on my feed made both my day, and my cat's!

    This movie was so much better than the trailer made it out to be. :) I love how they made the characters so real, particularly Megamind and Metro Man. The hero, very realistically, got tired of doing the same thing over and over and the villain wasn’t as happy with winning as he thought he’d be. Then you have the average guy who turned out to be a real villain the whole time and much like real life, who would know it?
    Also love that Metro Man referred to Megamind as “little buddy” at the end. ^_^ He knew the whole time that Megamind wasn’t truly evil.

      I think Hal’s character was sooo ahead of his time. He’s a really interesting exploration of the “nice guy” trope popularized by incels like Hal. First, the nice guy who actually mistreats and projects onto the pretty girl who feels entitled to her reciprocation because he’s the “nice guy”, and second, the nice guy excuse that girls aren’t looking for kind people or good personality, they’re looking to date the cool guy, the hot guy, or the protagonist. Hal only got excited to be a hero because he thought that now as the cool guy, the hot guy, the protagonist, that the pretty girl would finally be with him, the nice guy. And then his world gets shattered when he watches her fall in love with an “intellectual dweeb”, and lashes out even worse when he finds out she fell for MEGAMIND. Not only did she fall for a DWEEB, not unlike who he was, who wasn’t the hot guy, or the cool guy, or the protagonist, but the guy turns out to be the LITERAL villain, an inhuman blue alien with the personality of an oversized child. I’m not minimizing the stunning writing of Megamind’s character, but from Hal’s perspective he is everything he believes he needs to be for the girl he’s obsessed with to choose him (a smart, “nice” guy, AND a super powered hot cool guy), but then when he finally is everything he thought he had to be, he has to accept that if she had genuinely been interested, she would have dated him without all that stuff. He feels cheated, and small, and lashes out. He reflects the ugly side of incel toxic male echo chamber culture around a decade before it became cool to discuss

    I think Metroman was one of those popular kid bullies in school, which is what cemented their relationship for the future when they were adults, but while Megamind was perfectly happy to continue their game of hero and villain, Metroman was able to grow and mature as a person and realize that their game was just that, a game started by children, and that the game was hurting Megamind, who was in some ways, a friend to him, and preventing him from also growing and maturing. So by faking his death and retiring it left Megamind to crash and burn and then finally start to grow and mature and find a better place in society. Megamind became a hero, but also a hero without a villain because Hal was returned to being a regular guy. At most there's just a normal level of crime left that the police are able to handle. Megamind could help out with that but it's nothing like the game the two had been playing for years. Megamind for the most part is left to live his life outside of prison and the rules of being a bad guy, able to put his brilliant mind to inventing things to help people rather than hurt.
    ...unless some aliens invade Loki's army style and the world needs superheroes to fight them off, in which Megamind and Metroman are the only superheroes on Earth, that we know of.

    Megamind backstory is really reliable. As a kid all you want is to be accepted, but because he didn't have cool powers, his skin was blue and had a big head, everyone rejected him. Something I know is that kids absorb and immitate what is in their enviroment to forge a personality, he had a negative enviroment, so that's why he thought be a villain was his destiny.
    On the other side, Metroman really sets what some heroes really could deal with, they don't have a choice to do what they want. Just because someone has power doesn't mean they actually want to use it or want that power to begin with.
    And about Hal, he just had a superman-level teenager temper tantrum over being rejected by his crush. He could just move on, but instead he decided if he wasn't happy then anyone won't be as well.

    Given how the sequels to despicable me turned out, I'm kind of glad this didn't get a second movie. Just a shame it got shunted to the background on release when it's so original, besides having so many good lessons on how you look at yourself and those around you. It's such a wholesome tale with an amusingly unorthodox cast, everyone had fun making it and it shows.

    Hal in an interesting character to me.
    I mean, he only thinks he should "get the girl because he saved her" because Megamind told him that's how it worked, and Megamind only thinks that because he's been raised by criminals in jail and isn't very socially adapted so he only goes of what he assumes is happening with Metriman and Roxanne. I think in the beginning, Hal was just an awkward guy who had a crush on a girl who didn't like him back, but his powers and Megamind's bad advice turned him into a villain. For example, look at the scene where Hal invited her to his apartment for the bounce house party. He wanted to spend time with the girl he liked, but after he left Roxanne's field of vision, he didn't get upset about her not wanting to go with him, he got upset about how bad his suggestions were. He's an awkward guy who likes a girl, but has no idea how to actually talk with her. He doesn't do anything negative towards her except get a little jealous about someone else being here partner, not until 1) he got the powers, 2) Megamind, who he thinks is his "space dad", tells him that the hero always gets the girl. After that is when he changes from a funny, clueless, lazy, awkward, dim-witted nerd to be a aggressive, vengeful, bad-tempered, sadistic guy. There's a clear difference before and after. Clearly, at least some of that was in him before, but he never acted on it. Which is important to understand. Everyone has some dark part of themselves, but what separates good people from bad people is making the choice not to act on that part. In the scene I mention, he genuinely believes his ideas were terrible, as no one else is around for him to be putting on a show, but he's so awkward and dim witted that it's just what came to mind in the moment as he was talking with her. He just wanted to spend time with her at that point. Afterwards, when he kidnapped her to drop her and save her, as a clear misunderstanding of what saving Roxanne and "getting the girl" meant is when he goes from an awkward guy trying to get the girl to a villain. Once he has the power and expectations, and then is let down again is when he becomes a violent villain. Clearly, Hal wasn't a perfect guy, but I think having all those powers corrupted him and brought out the worst parts of his personality, and having his expectations raised by Megamind and then his crush destroying them solidified the negative parts of him.
    I remember reading somewhere that the inspirations for his character were Syndrome and Lex Luthor. I can see it. His name is also a combination of two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

    • @xxyzxxyz690
      @xxyzxxyz690 2 года назад +28

      Hal is the kind of guy who thinks that girls don't like him because he's not attractive/rich/powerful but once he speaks you immediately realize the actual reason. He's not awkward, he's a walking red flag and not a guy any woman would even want to be friends with. He keeps talking about love and marriage when they're only co-workers, he doesn't fully accept being rejected ("soft yes on Thursday") and getting mad is still a weird reaction even if it's not initially directed at her. He invalidates her words and actions saying she doesn't know what she's talking about, saying Bernard isn't her partner after she just said so herself and saying she "accidentally" hugged Bernard instead of him. He tells Roxanne he knows everything about her which implies he's been stalking her (which we actually see him do with his super vision). He clearly doesn't know his boundaries and feels entitled to her love. The superpowers didn't change him and Megamind's advice didn't turn him into a villain, he just became more forward because he suddenly believed he could get what he wanted and he would've done so even without Megamind's input. When he thinks Megamind is gonna rob him, he says that he should rob the lady downstairs instead because she has better stuff than him and literally the first thing we see him do with his powers is break a car. He's a "Nice Guy" but he was never a nice guy. I think his character parallels Megamind in a way, while Megamind was always good but never had the opportunity to be a hero, Hal (from what we've seen) was always kinda bad but never had the opportunity to be a villain. They both reached their "goals", in Megamind's case defeating Metro Man and having power over the city and in Hal's case getting Superpowers so he would have a chance with Roxanne. It didn't really work out for them and Megamind who was seen as a "bad guy" realized he doesn't truly want to be a villain while Hal who was seen as a "good guy" realized he doesn't truly want to be a hero

      When his first instinct when he doesn't get what he want when he has the power to do something is to kill people... I don't think that argument has much weight. Megamind never told him that's how a hero should act at any point.

    • @SebasTian58323
      @SebasTian58323 2 года назад +1

      @@LARVideos I already said he had all-or at least some of- those problems inside of him. And his first instinct wasn't to kill anyone. It was to steal stuff and go to his apartment and play games. It was only after Megamind provoked him- by taunting him about lying to him and dating Roxanne- into a fight that he started being more evil. True, he wanted to team up with Megamind, but he wasn't just out there violently attacking everyone right after Roxanne rejected him. He stole stuff, and went home and sulked inside while playing video games.

    I had a better idea for the whole Metro Man's weakness not working with Titan, more than the whole "faking my death" thing, anyway. I would have made it make sense why Titan wouldn't have the same weakness to copper...because he's HUMAN! Metro Man was an alien baby, same as Megamind, but of a different species. Yes, he looks human, doesn't mean he IS one! So, having copper being a weakness for a super-powered alien would make sense in that universe. A human given Metro Man's powers wouldn't have the same DNA mixture. Yeah, that little desfuser gun bullet with Metro Man's DNA was up his nose, doesn't mean it changed him completely. Otherwise, he would be just like Metro Man in personality, as well. If someone's DNA changes your whole body formula, than your brain would, too, changing your personality to be like Metro Man's.
    That would be a very intelligent screenwriting choice, in my opinion. But, noooo! They went with the OBVIOUS choice!
