Thanks PJ! I didn't know about the 6mm Allen Bolt, I would have forced the tensioner bolt and probably messed up something, glad I found your video.
A rule of thumb to be noted is if you have an MK1 always carry tools in your car.
And a spare fan belt..
Usually I just keep my old one in the boot..I. Have helped one or two Mk1 owners on the road with snapped belt...my old one then became a life saver
Thanks a lot for this content. Big ups PJ
Thanks Pj i get a lot of experience from you now im the mechanic of my golf Mk 1🤝
Great Going💪
Interesting video, there are a few other ways to do this, not sure which is the CORRECT way, maybe someone from VW could let us know. The way I do it is, I loosen the tensioner bolt, which you held with a plier, just enough for it to pull away from the locking splines, then I remove the bracket 13mm bolt on the head side, completely. The alternator releases and you take off the belt, fit new belt. Next you lift up the alternator by hand to align the 13mm bolt with the head again as you do this the tensioner splines naturally roll up and catch the correct notch to provide the tension, then you tighten the tensioner bolt and the 13mm bolt on the head side. I don't touch the Allen key bolt at all.
Well done sir.. Each to his own, but we get the job done.. That's the important thing..
I dont loosen the Allen key bolt completely.. Just a tad, because it can make it easier to move the alternator up and down, especially if it's become bit tight over time.
Great video and perfectly explained. 👍🏽 but mk1 guys remember your car is definitely over 14 years old, rather completely remove the alternator bolt with the Allenkey use another Allen to help you push out the bolt.
Be gentle with the 13mm bolt and the tensioner bolt/ bracket
If you happen to damage teeth on that bracket you have to get on fabricated for you or hope scrap yards have them.
Goldwagen/midas and many other Spare shops no longer stock many of the original gold 1 parts
You area a life saver.... love your videos
Great Vid. Easy step by step. PLAIN AN SIMPLE
Sir you make a video the cambelt replacement too
Hi sure, that's coming up soon..
How can I test my crank pulley ?that go's around the alternator and waterpump?
one thing that i haven’t figured out is how gents fit newspec mk1 petrol cap on an oldspec body , if you know let me know👍🏾
Hey . Sorry for the late response on your comment. To be honest, I thought it was one size fits all.... Just the key that's different.. But I can check up on that for you...
hi PJ do you perhaps know the length of the belt
I've never yet measured the belt...but you just need to take your old belt as a guide
Hey mate did you ever measure mine has snapped and now its missing ! so i dont know what to order i have 93 cabriolet. I think the problem is its different if you have aircon ?
I changed mine and its making a ticking sound afterwards what could be the issue any help guys,?
What does the bolt you loosen with the Allen key do? 🤙
It basically just holds the alternator in place onto the Block..
Hi there what is the size of the belt you used....my phone snapped off while on the highway today and couldn't recover it for a sample...
Hi ..you don't need to know the size of the belt ..all you do is ask for a Mk1 fanbelt at you local spares shop. They will give you the correct belt
My jetta mk2 doesn't have a heater radiator. Can the car blow air in the car without the radiator?
Nope it won't.. If you referring to the heater core/matrix.. You need that to produce the hot air
My mechanic changed my timing and fan so i had a noise coming from under the cover, then he said it was the tensioner so I bought a new tensioner but the noise still there. Any thoughts what it can be
Firstly, it could be that belt is too tightly fitted.. That makes a winning noise.. Secondly if it's fitted too loose it can knock against the cover...
Hi Mr PJ can you tell me what is it if the dashboard light is off
Hi .have u checked fuses yet?..are all the lights out on dash...new or old spec?
Hi Mr PJ just the speed side old spec dashboard
PJ, i have 1.6 motor with Keihin carburetor. In your opinion is it better to put mineral 15w40 or semi-synthetic 10w40 oil on it? Which one you use?
Hi.. Best to stick to recommended oil, which is 20 w 50....Helix is a good Brand... Been using it with no problems..
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy Thanks
Is the allen key adjustment necessary?
Nope. That was not an adjustment... It's Just to loosen up the bolt so the alternator can have a bit of free play and swivel, in order for the belt to come off easier
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy ah i see. Never knew that, just use the 13mm and big bolt to move..
@@uveshharrilall I think maybe only loosen the Allen key bolt if the alternator doesn't want to budge.... But I just wanted to show all the steps for those who are not so clued up on this.
