I recently replaced the cam followers and all went well. I had a slight ticking of one of the followers after I started up, but it went away once oil pressure was sufficient. Nowhere on the internet does it tell you how to soak the followers prior to installing, but what I did is place them in a clean container with the solid flat side down, i then filled clean oil in the container until the followers were submerged and i waited some hours while doing other stuff, its essential to do this.
I noted the following about removing the cambelt to do this work.
its not necessary to remove the bottom cover, only the top cover for the cam belt. I set the engine on its timing marks before doing the job and nothing moved (only the cam which I had to move obviously). I just released the tensioner, slipped the bely off carefully and was able to fit it back no hassles after re fitting the cam shaft upon completion of the work. Thanks guys have fun with your Golf.
PJ sir, thanx so much, I'm a young motor enthusiast and I own a polo classic 1.4i,, and I! Really grateful, You helped me a lot !! Keep up the great work! And guidance!
Lets race i got a 1.6l citi golf
Your video is always very educational coming from me ,so if I don't give a thumbs up, it's because l overlooked.
Thanks 👍
Hi Mr PJ your videos helps alot thank you

Hi there great video and🔥 it kind've helped me out but I'm having a problem when I'm going to tighten my cam belt the marks keep moving specifically the one on the flywheel. Do you have any idea why?
I definitely need more videos on how to everything on a mk1 golf 🥺 please
Mr PJ you are the best. Thanks
Thank you 😊
Thanks really help me

Hey, thanks for the wonderful info, its a year later now and I hope that this post of yours is still active. I however have a dilemma. the timing marks including the ones on the flywheel all line up toTDC, how do I adjust to 6deg BTDC when i don't see any other marks using a timing light.?
Hi PJ, what are the problems one can encounter if the timings are not set right? Tia
Perfect brother
Hi oom PJ. Usually i set my cam mark one notch lower than yours and have if fire 6 degrees after tdc. Feels as if it has a bit more oomf in those cases.
Oh k great. As long as engine doesn't ping too much hey
Thank you Mr PJ 😘
Thanks Cheryl. :)
I did mine without dizzys vacuum line on, is this a problem, if i now just install all vacuum lines back on their places do i need to redo timing adjustments?
thanks
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Only wish you had 1.4i velocity legion of videos😭👌❤️🙌🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hey thanks.. Don't worry videos on fuel injection will come soon
I’m having a big problem with my timing belt “walking” it wobbles on the cog and looks like it wants to pop off the side. Is this a tensioner problem?
Hi PJ i did my camshaft seal and when I put everything back my car won't start I'm doing these steps getting everything correct besides the marks on the flywheel and the distributer
Bro thanks you so much
My pleasure ,sir
Hello Mr PJ ...i would like to thank you for these videos ,theycare actualy good and they helps too much...anywy i would also like to know that what is your mk1 engine Capacity i mean the 1that is on the video.
Hi the one in the videos is a 1.3cc Chico.. Very reliable and cost efficient. Had it for 12 years now..
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy Wow that is so wonderful 👌✌🎉🎊🎀 Sir ..thanks for your reply.
Hi pj my fox gearbox mark for timing doesn't line up but all the other marks do, what cn I do to line my gearbox mark up thanks
Could be that the flywheel wasn't put on right..
Howzit PJ great videos . I'm busy with a 2l 8v with 288 cam 57 mil pipes dictator in a MK3.5 cabriolet. Got it started first try after wiring up the harness but dictator is being a not nice part. Any advice also got mp9 conversion intake fuel rail
According to the manual everything you did is 100% correct. I followed the manual to the tee but when I want to set ignition timing at 6 deg BTDC i still get rough idling. At 18 degrees it seems to run smooth but fuel is very rich? It's fuel injection!!! What gives??
Good
Hi sorry can someone tell me will mk1 carberator fit on mk2?
Hi boss thanks for the info helps alot. Only struggling with my intermediate/distribution pot timimg marks on pulley. There's 3 marks on my polo classic 1.6i 1998 model intermediate pulley. Ive put my engine on tdc, cam shaft lines up with tappet cover. Ive put mark on distributor towards no 1 and the rotor inline with that mark but marks on intermediate pulley not lining up with any other mark on crank shaft pulley. Can I leave it like that or will it affect starting or performance? Your help would be appreciated
With regard to intermediate pulley .As long as the rotor is pointing to the mark on rotor ..then you fine..
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy ok thanks for info will finish assembling tomorrow morning and give you an update
I have a problem so if i put my mark by the flywheel on its place then when i must make my cam belt stiff my flywheel moves of its place what must i do so that that doesnt happen
I set all the timing markings up The Cam, The flywheel, The Crankshaft pulley and the Dizzy marking but the bastard of a car wont start it sound normal while cranking but makes blowing noises when cranking.
Watch this video.Hope it helps with your problem

I got my mk1.......it does some sound in the engine after i have accelerated for few seconds or 1 min.......it gets silent what could be the problem
What is the idle advance for a 1986 MK2 Scirocco 1.8 carb model?
Recently did a timing belt but found the previous belt was fitted incorrectly on the distributor pulley.
After setting everything back to standard the ignition timing was way too advanced causing it to struggle/kick back when starting and idle fast, only info I could find online said to leave the vacuum line attached and set the idle advance to 17-19° btdc,
I set my advance dial on my strobe gun so that the crank pulley tdc mark was aligned at 17°, with this setting the car started another and idle was back to normal.
Is this correct for idle advance? From experience this is generally closer to 10°btdc on most other cars.
Hi , 6 to 7 degrees btdc is what it should be .,with vacuum advance line detached and plugged .Have you tried that?
Good day Mr PJ. Changed cambelt on velociti 1.6. After that I have a backfire when decelerate. What can be the problem.Timing marks look correct
Yeah that happens sometimes.. But have another look. Sometimes it's not exactly 100%...i know some people say it must be on top of the tappet cover lip, and some say the bottom of the lip,.. But I have always just put it in the center... Although if u put it a notch further (advancing the cam)... There is that little more power you get,.. But then the engine may ping.. And the opposite occurs when u turn cam back a notch, you could have sluggish performance, so my advice if u haven't put it in center of tappet cover lip, play around with it, but very small adjustments Pls..
very helpfull , keep up the good work PJ, local is lekker!!!!
Pleasure sir..
great vids! although i would appreciate very much if you could leave out the music... it makes me so hard to focus
Thanks ..😊
Must say, this is a first..,about the music.....sorry that you feel this way
If I could only play my own choice of music in my vids I would,...and not what RUclips prescribes to content creators. .
I love music ,...various kinds 😊
Hi there just a question, what if your flywheel isn't aligned when putting it on the timing marks what would the consequent be?
Just ensure you have the motor on top dead center ..meaning No.1 piston on top, ..that is the true way of determining timing, if u unsure ..just stick a screwdriver in the plug hole and check if piston is on top..Also check for the timing mark on the crank pulley..it lines up with the mark on plastic Cambelt cover, and of course your cam timing in line with lip of tappet cover, and rotor must point to the notch on the distributor
Hi PJ please help me get my ignition timing right on my mk1 golf 1600 carb i would like to know where number 1 piston must be set and rotor position please if you can help me thank in advance.
You mean valve and crank timing because ignition timing is meant to be set with a timing light ..see the link below for a video on timing marks ,where no 1 plug must be,and rotor position etc. ruclips.net/video/mzdNdRj4OK4/видео.html
Brilliant video of these engineering marvels! Maybe you can do a video of how to hook up the rev counter for those who purchase a cluster that has a rev counter to replace their original one without a rev counter
Thanks for the suggestion.. I shall certainly try...
Hi PJ my jetta was in full running order so i took off the distributor cap and removed the rotor put everything back now it backfiring can you please help firing order is 1 3 4 2.
Have you maybe not pushed the rotor down securely?..it Shud snap down into place .Also checked your leads if it's snapped into place on the distributor.. especially coil lead
@@pjs-golfmk1-diygood day sir. Love all your videos very helpful. I got a polo playa 1.8 mp9. The mechanic said he set the timing but not sure if he did a k#@# job because the car is struggling to start but eventually starts after numerous swings also the car does not pull when putting my foot flat and dies sometimes now an then backfires.
Hi I'm hearing grinding noise when accelerating in my jetta mk2. What can be the problem
Hi .It could be pinging ,which is caused by the ignition timing being too advanced .Try retarding the timing slightly.
Hi mPj my cam pully and cam is 100% but my flywheel is not lined up Any tips please
I wud suggest that you ensure that the No 1 piston is at TDC, top dead center. If you unsure about Flywheel
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy everything is lining up but not the fly wheel
My car o compessuer wat ast i do
Is the same for 1.4i 8v motors?
Yes sir .exactly..
So this triangle mark on flywheel is the 6 degrees before TDC
Any sing off cylinder head is gone in golf 1
Oil and coolant mixing . That's the first thing you check. Look at your oil cap and dipstick for signs of this ..or you topping up coolant regularly, but have no external leaks
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy I put wonder world
Beware mechanic doesn't snip 1 of 3 wires on the lug mounted outside bottom housing of distributors supplying power to it,It's difficult to notice if done by person knowingly how to milk your wallet!
Where are you from ?
