SRV opened for Ray Charles in Seattle Festival, I didn't know who Stevie was, but for $7 I got to see the greatest guitarist I've ever seen, and I've seen many talented bands and artists. We were drenched in sweat after he played. Ray Charles danced in the wings during half of Stevie's set. It was incredible! 💞✌

You should see when him and his big brother Jimmie get on stage and play together. I shot photos of them once playing the same double neck guitar. Stevie was seated on a stage monitor playing the lower neck while Jimmie wrapped his arms around his little brother and played the upper.
My brother and I used to go see Stevie play all the time. He did weekly shows at a little place called Hole In The Wall back in the day here in Austin, and regularly at other places like Antones and Liberty Lunch.
*SUPER* nice guy. He literally gave my buddy Mike the pickups off his guitar once because Mike broke his. Mike was playing Antones, Stevie was in the back with Clifford Antone watching the show. We didn't even know he was there. Mike was gonna end the show early because he didn't have another guitar to play, but his was the same model Fender Strat that Stevie plays. Stevie went out to his car and took the pickups off his, brought them to Mike and said something like, "Keep playing, brother. You're on fire!"

Stevie quit in his Senior Year while attending Southern Methodist University for the artistical and gifted high school students. He was 17. I feel that. Texas boy....and had moved out of state (Hawaii) for high school. Grew up on his music, and was moving back to Austin, Texas for college in 1990. Was so excited to be able to FINALLY see him live....then the day before getting on the plane to head off to college, I heard the news. Was devastated. Weird to think about it, as I'm almost 50, but still remember my parents not understanding why I was in tears. Only comfort was being able to hear his influence on other musicians...

The live performance he put on would continue for hours depending on the lengths of pure shredding that Stevie would take off on. He was phenomenal. People went to see him play that guitar. He didn't even have to sing, just play his beloved guitar.... He was one with his instrument..... Stevie Ray Vaughn was from Texas, he was killed in a helicopter crash, & the world lost one of the most talented guitarist ever to walk the earth.... Your comments showed you don't know much at all of the rock world... But that's OK... You will soon understand that in some cases we do go just to see the guitarist if he is great like Stevie was...

Texas gave us two of the most insanely gifted players. Stevie Ray & His Older Brother Jimmie Vaughn.
Every time he was asked who his favorite guitar player was Stevie would reply My Big Brother.
At age 14 Stevie found out Albert King was playing at the club where his brother Jimmie was in the house band & he begged Jimmie to ask Albert if he could sit in with him..
Albert King was at first put out & said no... but before the end of the night he relented & let the 14 yr old join him.
    What happened next is legendary..
Stevie held his own & answered Albert back with some of his own licks.. A lifelong friendship & mentorship began that night..
And before his death in 1990 he was clean sober & even more powerful a player than he had ever been..
One of the coolest things about him he openly talked on stage about what getting clean & sober did for him but he NEVER judged or preached or talked at you. He simply shared amongst friends.
Fun fact: he had to be convinced to record Voodoo Child & Little Wing, because he didn't think he could do them justice.

He and his band nearly single handidly brought true blues back to the front lines of popularity, and when he got top billing he brought all of them, the 3 Kings, buddy Guy, all of them along with him.He also had the line of modern hard rock to the table, masterfully displaying his magic, playing what his mind dreams up flowing throughout his body. Well....sorta kinda, Justin. Albert King in no way raised or adopted Stevie, or even guided his musical ability by personally guiding him. SRV and Jimmie Vaughan learned songs by playing records slowly, over and over, although Jimmie could do it like ringing a bell . Stevie moved out pretty young, following his brother to Austin, and became guitarist for a number of Texas bands such as Krackerjack. He was severely independent, and if anyone took care of him, it was his girlfriends. He was rejected from several bands simply becasue he was too young to play the places the band would be playing. He was just that damned good even as a kid. He was not an unformed talent when he met King either, although Stevie had profound respect for him, and based his tone on King's own. Stevie's talent was pretty much fully blossomed before he ever shook King's hand the first time, but as far as mentoring by teaching Stevie via his recordings goes, yes, King did that, but it wasn't a situation in which King And Stevie sat down together and shaped Stevie's talent while Stevie was struggling and that was when Stevie 'made it'. SRV was a fully developed monster who reduced rivals to rubble when he broke onto the local Texas scene in the '70s.

Hello to you both. I am really happy and enjoy seeing young people like you discovering SRV. No matter the genre, good music is good music! Since you asked, I had the honour of seeing this exact performance and you guys are correct,... I was LOST! Not only that, I deliberately lost myself again and again... so that I could be found over and over. (don't know if that made any sense)
It was a hot muggy night in Toronto, where you could even taste Lake Ontario! Stevie gave his ALL every time he touched his guitar... yep, he touched everyone's soul too. No one moved, or dared to interrupt the magic which Stevie was giving us that memorable evening. I was about twenty feet away and I could not only see the sweat beading off him, but, I could actually hear the pick hitting the strings. All of my bodily functions stopped and I held my breath for each and every lick Stevie invented. He never minded the heat, or the humidity as he went some place else.... a place he took us all. I was barely 20 yrs old and must admit that most of my friends couldn't understand why I was going to this concert and they abandoned me for that evening. Going alone didn't matter as I was determined to see Stevie live and boy did he ever deliver! My buddies missed something incredible that evening.
My music died the day I heard of his passing and a part of my soul will never be found again. It belittles every true artist when others compare them to another... that's something I cannot and never will understand. Each and every artist brings something unique, of themselves and your experience of them is like none other. Dig and find every piece of musical artistry you can find of SRV. He left us far too young, as most extra-ordinary ones do. Stevie probably can't rest in peace, as I am sure that he has been asked to serenade all in heaven. Either way, SRV will live on in our imaginations, every time we hear him play. God Bless!

I remember the day SRV died. I almost cried. Best guitarist ever. Nice video, y'all.

SRV is the goat... he’s from Dallas Tx. Joint, beer and cigarette! Now you should check out Johnny Winter.

Saw JW at the Hammersmith Odeon when he toured the UK in the 80's (I think). Mention his name but unfortunately nobody knows who he was :-(

That song that night live at the EL Mocamo may have been the best performance of his career. Maybe one of the best guitar performances of all time.

One question. How did you guys get so old without hearing Stevie Ray??? You should get outta the hood more often. See what you've been missing????? (:>))

That's nothing, I was telling my friend about Bohemian Rhapsody (the movie). She said that one of her colleagues at work never heard a Queen song. I asked how did she avoid it? She said that's what she asked her.
It's like those people that you find that have never seen The Christmas Story or The Princess Bride.

Stevie has an older brother, Jimmie Vaughn, who performs with his band. That’s the closest DNA we’re gonna get to Stevie. This was Stevie’s 1989 appearance on Austin City Limits.❤️🤘🏼
