He broke a string, thus the guitar change. It was really was ridiculous, the music just seemed to fall out of him, like it couldn't be contained, and he had to let it out.

You got that right, friend. I was lucky enough to see SRV in April 1988 after he got clean, small 1000 seat venue. Music blasted out of him in a torrent. It was overwhelming. At first, you were afraid for him; 20 minutes in, when you realized he would NOT stop, you were afraid for yourself. It was literally exhausting trying to match his energy, intensity. Eventually you just said screw it, I'll go as long as I can. Then he dropped an early version of "Rivera Paradise." We have no idea what we lost.

Texas Magnolia’s comment is 100% true. I’ve seen reactions to SRV from professional guitarists who say that if even an accomplished guitarist picked up SRV’s guitar, sure they could play it, but they couldn’t come close to reproducing the same sound as SRV. The difference is, as Magnolia pointed out, was the size and strength of SRV’s hands. Even in this video, he swaps guitars because he broke a string. There’s a reaction video by a professional guitarist about this specific skill SRV had. He realized that he was going to constantly be at WAR with his strings and so he became a master at both playing for awhile with a broken string and then making QUICK guitar changes when there was a break in the song. If you had been SRV’s roadie/guitar tech, you knew you HAD to be a real Johnny-on-the-spot and you KNEW you were going to be much busier than an average roadie. It’s really indicative of SRV, he COULD have played softer and easier and spared his strings but he knew the sounds he wanted to make and was NOT going to compromise

Stevie Ray Vaughn is the best guitarist that ever lived. Stevie Ray is the GOAT.
He tragically died in a helicopter crash & I remember how it felt to think this man who put his soul into playing would never play again. It was heartbreaking. I miss him. I regret I never saw him live.

"Y'all see how casual he is, like it's normal for people to just play the guitar behind their back while they're singing a song..."
    Exactly. 🙌
SRV is one of my main inspirations, and I've been playing 30+ yrs. I actually can play behind my back, behind my head, and with my teeth, lol... not as incredibly as SRV and Jimi, but I can do it. But I probably wouldnt even have imagined trying without watching giants like this. 🤯🙌🙏🤘🤘🤘💙

Seeing this as a kid somewhere, I remember thinking that when he busted a string and had to switch guitars, he was like "HOW DARE YOU disobey me like this" and decided to let out some kind of fury on his guitar afterwards. Like was just straight angry. It was filthy. What i would be without this man and this band in my life as a kid.

Stevie was totally for real. He started playing at age 6. He was real and honest. Once B. B. King opened for him and he got real upset. He told his manager not to ever let that happen again. He was to open for him, Albert King, all the greats. He had a lot of respect for them.

He stood on the same pedestal as Jimi; they shared the one trait that others didn't which was improvisational genius. And no one played such heavy strings as he, not to mention routinely breaking them. Such a tragic loss; he had his best days ahead of him.

Stevie is, was and always will be my favorite musician. He didn't just play his guitar, he made love to it! The passion that oozed from that man's soul went straight to his fingers and his voice was just as amazing! He put every ounce of his soul into his music! August 27th,1990 is a day I will never forget because the world lost one of the most phenomenal entertainers that ever lived and I still mourn his death and I cry for all the mind blowing music we missed out on when he was killed. SRV was one of a kind! 💜 ❤️ 😢 Great reaction!

What some people don’t understand is he is phrasing with the guitar what you can’t speak in words so you feel it. Really feel it . That’s what the blues are about. Black players like Robert Johnson who is remarkable and so many more came up with the blues from the oppression from the slavery of white peoples . And I’m white . But man what a great art and feeling of truth. So sorry really am that anyone was ever treated like that at the abuse of others for money. It makes me really tear up. And I’m a blues player.

The thing that most don't even notice is not only does he play behind his back, but he does it unconventionally where most swing the guitar around so the strings are away from the body. SRV plays with the strings directly towards him which is just so so hard to do and as effortless as he does.
