As a very big fan of the original Wild Wild West I looked forward to the movie but was disappointed by the animosity between Jim and Artie. Completely against the original dynamic of the hit series. Plus, the original was serious and should have been played that way. The original was "James Bond in the old west" and should have been done that way
@ No worries, it ran for 5 years in the 1960s Yeah Jim was like James Bond but his partner Artie was like the inventer/disguise/ undercover guy but in the show they were good friends and had each other's backs
Same here. Loved it as a kid, always curious which scene would become part of the collage. When I saw Smith in the lead, I already knew it would be the Fresh Prince of the Alamo. I wasn't wrong. Just not my 'thang'.
I'm noticing a pattern. Movies that break the conventional mold and experiment with multiple genres tend to confuse audiences and are considered flops. Test screenings turn up negative and they make several changes to make it more conventional, which can make the movie feel choppy and even more alienating. I guess that explains why Hollywood would rather churn out low risk popcorn flicks that don't push the envelope. Sad, but I understand now. I love this movie and the Cable Guy. Both broke the mold and got a bad rep.
This film is fine for anyone whom didn't enjoy or even know about the original TV series. I grew up with the TV series - this ain't that. Imagine someone replaces your dog - hey - it's still a dog. What's the problem?
I remember Trey Parker on a talk show saying that Wild Wild West would obliterate the South Park movie at the box office… he was either wrong or knew better and was making an inside the business joke.
Omg this triggered me. I am old enough to be a wild wild west afficionado. It was absolutely my favorite tv show growing up. Loved Robert Conrad. I was absolutely LIVID when they cast will smith as James west. I can't stand him for a variety of reasons. Also, poor Kevin cline. Nobody could ever take ross Martin's place.
While he was averaging $14M per movie, Janet Hubert was balancing being blackballed in Hollywood because of Will, taking on plays while withstanding an abusive marriage
I think the biggest problem with the movie was its casting. And NO - I am not referring to Will Smith's race. It does have to do with Smith, though. Casting Smith as James West virtually GUARANTEED that the movie would have to have an entirely different tone from the old TV show. Smith's acting always involves comedic elements that just were NOT part of the James West character. Robert Conrad played the role "straight," and I honestly don't know if Will Smith was capable of that. So we wound up with a movie loaded with Smith's comic leaning (not a "comedy," but you know what I mean). I still considered it a worthwhile watch, but it didn't "take me back" to my old memories the way a more straight interpretation would have.
@@terrylandess6072 Makes sense. Though I never thought of Conrad as "suave" - he always just seemed brash and aggressive to me. Very hyper-alpha, in your face sort of guy. No doubt that's why they chose him for those battery commercials.
The two stars of the film had no chemistry whatsoever and I got the impression that they really didn't like each other. And having the villain be disabled merely allowed for jokes making fun of his disability, which greatly lowered my opinion of the director.
Will Smith is a victim of "not listening to people who are talking to him in front of him". If he wasn't checking his watch or waiting for a trigger word to chime in and bail, he'd actually be respected now.
Wild Wild West was basically a western version of men in black. Same director and star. Same similarities. Same pg13 rating. They should’ve casted someone better than will smith for the lead role of James west. If it was George Clooney, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Tom cruise, Kurt Russell, Tommy Lee Jones, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, then it would have been better.
Seagull has an invincible air to him, he might as well live in Narnia he's so deluded. Nobody can touch him because he doesn't exist in this plane of reality. Will Smith is too pathetic to be that smug.
If anybody's a fan of The Friday The 13TH Franchise, 1 of the stunt players is Ted White who played Jason Voorhees in Friday The 13TH: The Final Chapter & the villain with a tin head is played Derek Mears who would later play Jason Voorhees in Friday The 13TH (2009).
Since you mentioned Russell Crowe and Hugo Weaving in the same post may I recommend their earlier effort 'Proof'? A no-budget masterpiece that is brilliant.
I saw Wild Wild West when it came out. The music video and the soundtrack commercial was out a month before the movie and I was hyped. When I finally saw the movie… I was kinda disappointed and felt mislead when Salma’s character didn’t end up with Will’s character like in the music video.
Longtime film analyst Sean Stangland of Chicago's Sun said of Wild Wild West, "This is as bad as it gets, folks". It is in my top five worst ever made along with Godzilla and Batman and Robin.
What’s funny after seeing this in theater… This movie ended up being one of my Guilty Pleasures… Sometimes a Bad movie has a way of sticking with you! Although if Smith did do The Matrix I always wondered what would happen when Neo and Trinity got it on in the second which Jada was apart of as well! 😂 Probably would have made her Trinity! Ironically I ended up doing the same thing for Final Destination 3 since I was 19 but I didn’t take my wallet so I paid to see a Tyler Perry movie then snuck into FD3! 😂😂😂
Mel Gibson & Donners Maverick came out in 1994, Wild Wild West didnt come out until 5 years later in 1999. So how could Gibson & Donner have left the WWW production to quickly produce Maverick instead?
I think the movies you take and the movies you don’t should be considered in your legacy. Will Smith is a bad actor. He’s Will Smith parody in every role. He’s never acted in his life.
I love how you say ONLY $7 million... like that's not about $6 million more in one shot, than most of us will have to work the rest of our given lives to get close to seeing. If we're lucky, or REALLY good at saving money. Some of us will just never in a million years have that shot. For all the movies Will's made - he could've been paid 2.5 mil each one and still not be hurting for money.
Many movies that are considered terrible I actually enjoy. This is one, also the new lone Ranger with Johnny Depp was actually really good Yes, it was hitting all the tropes , but it was a fun, beautiful entertaining movie
I still don't get the hate for this flick. There's plenty of bad movies that I loved as a kid and can watch through nostalgia glasses to enjoy in my adult years but this isn't one of them. I enjoy it just as I would as if it came out today and my wife does as well. We still kick back and watch here and there.
I thought Ali was a great movie. Will definitely did his thing as Muhammad Ali. Especially the scene where he says "America wants Me to fight in another country and they won't even fight for me here at home". That was a great scene🥊
While not a great movie, I did enjoy some of the creative steampunk elements in the WWW. It’s pretty rare that you see that sort of stuff brought to life in a big budget live action movie.
I'd say that it would have been quite difficult to take The Matrix as seriously had Neo been played by what was at that time a comedic actor. Bottom line: Not enough Salma Hayek.
Agreed
She was the only good thing about the movie.
All involved gave their excuses, except for Kenneth Branagh. He didn't have a leg to stand on.
I see what you did there
Nice one
I fully believe kids bought tickets to this just to see South Park in theatres.
Probably the first movie I remember watching in theaters and thinking “Oh, this is bad.”
I just can't imagine The Matrix without its original cast.
We dodged a bullet there.
I actually enjoyed the movie. I revisit it from time to time 😂
Same 😅
Genuinely a fun movie and I’ve never understood the hate. Maybe we’re just blinded by nostalgia😅
Same 😂
I agree. It's a steam punk retro Western that shouldn't work but it does. The story is so weird which is why it's great.
Me too
Russell Crowe made out just fine with Gladiator.
Conrad was right in refusing to cameo in this.
The only thing the film shares with the original was the name.
Whenever Will Smith fails, an angel gets its wings.
🤣🤣🤣
That’s right…
Atta boy, Costanza *wink*
If one likes the Fresh Prince, that's what they get 99% of the time because that's who he is. It got old to me long ago.

Wild, Wild West. The most expensive music video.
That was the only good thing that came from this movie🤷♀️
I’ll never understand the failure of this movie. It’s a fun adventure/comedy.
I agree. None of those criticisms make sense. It's a great action/comedy with a good script, good actors and interesting visual style.
My biggest problem is the random spider that was forced in lol
It failed for a reason. It's bad.
Whenever you see movie reivews, it basically boils down to: "Stop liking what I don't like."

Welcome to the matrix!

I remember watching the movie at the theater. When it came out. It was so boring that I felt sleepy 😴..
I watched this like 20 years ago in an empty theater and i thought it was amazing and hilarious. Come to find out everyone hate it.

Will Smith wanted on this film just so he could make that stupid wild wild West song with his lover Sisqo
That's the dude famous for that "Thong" song right?
@ yeah… that’s him
Smith is also a Diddy close friend... frequent on the parties it seems...
Stevie Wonder: I wish

Sean Connery as Morpheus would've been funny.
