It should be noted that only Mario Kassar was in charge of Carolco by this point. Vajna left in 1989 partly because he was appalled by the amount of money most Carolco movies were costing at the time. Vajna created Cinergi in 1991 and was making movies on his own through Disney by the time of Cutthroat Island.
Definitely, 'Crusade' for Arnold Schwarzenegger, 'Gale Force' for Sly Stallone and 'Shadow Company' for Kurt Russell are 3 of the biggest missed opportunities of that decade. Would love to see them get made today but obviously with a new and younger cast that fit the characters. Hugh Jackman for 'Crusade,' Gerard Butler for 'Gale Force' and Cole Hauser or Timothy Olyphant for 'Shadow Company would be awesome.
Cutthroat Island and John Carter were both GREAT movies!!! Anyone who didn't like these movies has no imagination or sense of adventure. They both deserved much better fates than what they got. Both of these deserved to be award winning blockbusters and become 'must watch' viewing. Audiences and studios are unfair and too picky.
I didn't think he movie was that bad. I was entertained. Only problem I had with it,was music over playing effects during the big battle scene towards the end. Funny thing though. When it bombed nobody blamed misogyny,or male fans hating on Gena.
@darwincity Ah yes!! That looks like another expensive one! But to be fair you kind of expect that. But Snow White definitely not. I've no idea how much the Brett Cooper version costs but it won't be any higher than about $20m if that
Did you notice I mentioned that Carolco got bankrupted? This is why $$$ is very important part of movie success. No wonder it was top1 failure...$100 mil wasted and only $10 mil earned.
Matthew Modine had been in business already a decade or so before Cutthroat Island and hadn't amounted to much. It's questionable how much of a career he had to be ruined.
Good channel but you need better sound for the VO, and possible some fill music at times or perhaps fade in very low the sound of the clip. fun though - I hope you make it work.
Was just thinking about this movie the other day. Had no idea it was a flop. Gina Davis is the perfect lady pirate captain for the tone of the movie. You can really tell they spared no expense and, like the Pirates movies, even the background characters have real life to them.
Unpopular opinion! Despite the box office bomb that Cutthroat Island unfortunately became, I personally LIKE this film for what it is! Genna Davis playing a bad ass pirate! Frank Langella playing a bad guy you WANT dead! Add on John Debney's music soundtrack, this movie FEELS LIKE a pirate movie! The movie is approaching 30 years old, yet people still watch and talk about it!
I’m a film buff and this movie amd I’ve never seen this. Mainly because it received such negative reviews. I mean why waste time. However, “The Long Kiss Goodnight” directed by Renny Harlin and staring Gina Davis was very good.
Cutthroat Island is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the set designs, the action, good story, practical effects, and the incredible stunts. It's one of those movies that people ignored. But when I show it to them, they see how amazing it is. As for Pirates Of The Carribean, I watched it one time, and it didn't appeal to me at all.

As much as I enjoy Cutthroat Island, I really wish Crusade got made. It sounded awesome.

Right? I personally think that Cutthroat Island is better than the entire POTC Saga.
@@Gemini053 Oof...pretty sure you're alone on that one.

would that have helped?
Cutthroat Island & John Carter are both objectively entertaining well made and enjoyable films.
Pluto Nash is terrible and a vanity project disaster
Can you define "objectively"?
Ironically, I love this movie and consider it a prequel to Pirates of the Caribbean
Say. Like, that's really interesting.
Prequel according to whom? 😅
Wait until Snow White comes out. The budget for that has exploded. As in Tsar Bomba exploded
What about Captain America: Brave New World?
@darwincity Ah yes!! That looks like another expensive one! But to be fair you kind of expect that. But Snow White definitely not. I've no idea how much the Brett Cooper version costs but it won't be any higher than about $20m if that
@@darwincity Yes, I think this one blew more money and will have a smaller audience.
Glad to see your other videos are as good as the few I've watched. Looking forward to more, perfect for a quick meal.
Cutthroat Island is great, everyone thinks it's a "failure" because of the money it lost, but it;s a great film.
Did you notice I mentioned that Carolco got bankrupted? This is why $$$ is very important part of movie success. No wonder it was top1 failure...$100 mil wasted and only $10 mil earned.
I always liked the ships, scenic locations and props in this movie. Davis, Modine and Christopher Masterson were miscast.
Cutthroat Island gets a lot of hate, but I must admit, to me, it's a classic that must be watched every christmas.
I liked it
That's known as a "guilty pleasure". And your guilt would be well earned on this one.
They should have banked on schwarzenegger and verhoeven

I was surprised by how decent it was when I saw it recently. But I get it was hard to sell with Gina Davis as the lead
The movie It’s not that bad. The problem is that is too generic. Nothing you haven’t see before
Oliver Reed and Gina Davis got into a fight? 😆

A film that is still enjoyable today, with good work from Harlin and Davis.

It's Not Davis fault Cutthroat was a failure It's Carolco and Harlin
This one was unfortunate; I remember really liking Cutthroat Island when I saw for the first time in the early 2000s
Yeah, I only ever saw it once, but I remember thinking it was a decently good adventure film.

"it was two times cheaper to make".... do you mean "half as expensive"?
Not the same?

$200 Million in loses.....
Disney "Hold my beer, we've got Captain America and Rachael Zigler."
man they just fired everybody huh?
This was a fun movie worth watching I enjoyed it.

I love this movie I don’t get the hate
greatestv film ever made
Why Americans hates *Show Girls ??? Its a beautiful Girls to me 😅
Try corn. I'll blow yer mind.
RUclipsrs should understand failure very well.
Any second grader can do the math. 100 spent, 10 earned - failure. Company bankrupted - failure.
It may have flopped at the box office...but as a kid i liked it!
This movie’s production woos gave it a bad rep- it’s great!
I love both campy movies cutthroat island and showgirls are so bad that are good ❤❤
Showgirls failure coming soon.
