There's 4 basic movie video game types -The Replica The video game is basically the source material, but made interactive. There may be some divergence, but the owners want it as close to the movie as possible. An example of this is some of the lego licensed games. -The alternative story-line The game is still uses quite the bit of source material, but is given a divergent or different story, usually not canon. I do not have a good example for this one. -The continuation A game is a sequel in some way to the original source material, most of the time is canon until it's convenient. An example of this is the VR groundhog day sequel. -The parallel The game is set in the same exact universe and around the same time as the movie, but follows different characters, with the source characters maybe making cameos. An example of this one is the Catwoman DLC for Batman Arkham City.
I almost don't even consider the Lego games to be tie ins because of how disconnected they feel from the source material. Tie in implies they were made to release either alongside the movie or closely after it to maximize sales. The Lego games like Indiana or Star Wars were made long after the movies. Aaaaand I just realized Lego Star Wars 1 was pretty close after the prequel trilogy so this statement falls flat.
If they make another Matrix game, and decide to explore a previous version of the Matrix, I hope they do the first version. Agent Smith tells us that the first Matrix was made to be a utopia, but that humans rejected that reality. Playing that out, a human-driven apocalypse, while discovering that the world is a simulation, and discovering that the player character has the power to free others from the system, would be incredibly cool, and offers a huge number of story hooks.
The second iteration could also be cool. After the collapse of the utopia, The Architect tried to make one of human grotesqueries. In this version it had vampires, angels, etc and The Merovingian was basically The Oracle.
It would be fascinating to know how much was spent on the live film elements in Enter the Matrix and the actual development of the game. I still have happy childhood memories of it though.
What an insane project. I love this. Thank you for this retrospective. I've had many friends who owned these games but I never played them myself. After this, I think I might pick up a copy.
Nice review but regarding ETM I disagree at a few points: 1- There is a blocking/countering system by pressing square in ps2 for blocking and hitting square at the second of enemy's attacks to counter-attack. 2- Most of the controls are good for the time of release date and easy to learn and master. Unfortunately not many people know how to use them properly even today. 3- On ps2 you could draw your gun by pressing R1 and reload by pressing square. 4- in certain moments where the game would bug the sniper aim all you had to do was using focus while shooting. You would unbug it and also prevent from getting shot more. 5- Due to the fact AI sucks at driving, it was good the enemies wouldn't shoot us if we were not facing them. Thanks to that we were able to clear the level the chase where the twins try to kill us. 6- Multiplayer mode and also parallel missions were good but disappointing because we could not play as Neo. There was only a fan art picture of him in hacking mode. The game is good for 2003/2004 game standards. It was personally my favorite one compared to PoN. It could be better in some ways but it wasn't.
I didn't mind the tutorial stage of Path of Neo, because at the time I could really get immersed in the game and took the name of the game to heart. "Path of Neo". I imagined that this is what was going on in Neo's mind when he was learning kung fu and such. Janky games but I think the devs reeeeally loved The Matrix series. A channel called "Purposeless Rabbitholes" also made a good video about PoN a while back.

I was a big fan of it growing up and messed around with the multiplayer a ton, funny thing is I just don't remember the hacking stuff at all. Anyways it was fun to see everything again it's been many years.
Kacey you missed a big one in Enter the Matrix. In Hacking you can enabled Sword.dsk which unlocks a samurai sword you can kill shit with. You can even use it in multiplayer. Its an instakill weapon on all but agents. So it makes multiplayer like a wild west showdown who can pull their sword first. In fights with agents you can exploit a loop in the animation to continuously slice up an agent until they die and then you can pick up their .50 AE Deagle
O can't wait to watch this one. Used to be a HUGE Matrix fan as a kid (still am btw a big fan). I played the shit out of Path of Neo, replaying the levels again and again, trying to fight as close to how the fight scenes went in the film. It sure was a weird game with all the extra stuff they added and the ants.... Enter the matrix was always not that great to me, never even finished it because it was to difficult for me when I was young. Never played Online though. Anyways, thank for doing this, should be a lot of fun.
I'm currently replaying it on my Xbox after having beat Enter the Matrix as a kid. It's a hard game, but the combat is decades ahead of it's time and it's incredible how they did all of this on this gens hardware.

Finally it is here, at long last...been waiting forever for you to release this retrospective. Enter The Matrix was a favourite of mine as a child, used to play it all the time! Path Of Neo is good as well but I found the animations and combat to be smoother and better looking in Enter.
Funny enough I have spent this past few weeks rewatching the Matrix series and finding out that there was probably a dark fantasy matrix in the past iterations just got me itching for more. Buut since the idea of being a Matrix's ripoff sounds better than a fanfic I kinda want to develop it now. Maybe one day I will share a few ideas and such.

I cannot for the life of me remember which magazine it was, but I have a distinct memory of that magazine having a walkthrough for Enter the Matrix, and during the section where Ghost spars with Trinity, the walkthrough went into pain staking detail about how the writers found Trinity to be very unattractive. Nice to know they stayed on topic.

Neo's outfit with the red headband kind of reminds me of Kenshi from Mortal Kombat. Pretty funny since Neo's voice actor in this game went on to voice Johnny Cage in MK.

Maybe I’m a little bias, but I bought Enter the Matrix at launch, years ago and that game was great! My only real complaint was that the combat got repetitive…..But, that was almost 20 years ago and almost every game was repetitive back then and most still are…..so I gave my issues with the game a pass.
The Tony Hawk joke and the "After three hours of 'I know kung-fu...'" bit were dang hilarious! Couldn't stop laughing, lol. I'm actually kinda interested in trying Path of Neo now. I enjoyed the Matrix movies, but I'm not like a big fan or anything. But I always like seeing games try something new, and in particular when they flex the unique muscles of the medium. Gonna have to keep an eye out for it now.

If they ever decide to make another Matrix game I hope it'll be developed by either Monolith or Rockstedy. Monolith is most likely as they worked on Matrix before, have experience with gun-play(all the FPSs), melee (Shadow of ...) and slow motion (Fear). Allegedly they're working on sci-fi open world game now, could be matrix. EDIT: Spelling and everything after 1st sentence.

I love the matrix but i never really got deep with the games.I played Enter the Matrix twice but i never got it to beat it because i just couldn't with those controls, but i think i will try again but after i played path of neo, which i never played i definitely need to give a chance now. Great video as well, good editing all around and a good research you did about the games! I would love a future Matrix game but i have no idead who should develop.

Max Payne games are the best Matrix games xD I liked Path of Neo alot tho, but i didnt get far, tutorial torn me down a bit too much and i didnt go beyond 1st game's sequences stopping miway through saving people after it, in chinatown section.
ughh i love The Matrix movies so much im frustrated as why we cant have a good matrix game. My idea for a cool Matrix game would be to play as Neo after the first Matrix movie but before the sequels, on an open world city which you can travel by flying and you would have a main story with main missions to follow, or you could make side quests like defeating hoards of agents Smiths or securing phone booths or side stories realted to the Oracle. And then, while free roaming you can go back to Zion whenever you want, and there the game would be like an rpg, you would have quests from citizens and you can expand your relationships with the crew. Also in Zion you could improve Neo´s skills for example, giving him advanced kung fu moves or combos just like in the movies. Thats what i would truly enjoy to play, its really ambitious i know haha. But it would be like a mixture of Spiderman ps4 (fighting, flying and free roaming) and Fallout (quests and talking to crew in Zion)
I know the Resurrections trailer just dropped last week, but I feel like there's barley any promotion for this one. Maybe I'm just used to how it was in 2003 when it was Matrix everywhere haha, such a good opportunity to make new games/merchandise tho that I hope they don't pass up

...wait, you got Path of Neo to work on PS2? My copy refuses to load aside from 1 time. I've had the disc resurfaced twice, cleaned to the point it could work as a mirror, and even tried on different PS2 consoles with different model numbers, and my copy just doesn't want to work on my console. I've had to rip the disc to play on PCSX2, as the emulator runs it flawlessly when the settings are right
@@Kaceydotme Most of the cleaning I would do was with a microfiber cloth and cd/DVD cleaning solution, the resurfacing I got done after a month of failed attempts to get the game to work. For what I was told back when I bought it, it is a common issue with The Path of Neo, but back then, there was no explanation as to why it occurs. Some forums online still exist of people asking why the game won't load. Me ripping my copy shows the data on the disc is undamaged, but for some reason the disc itself is causing the problems
Watching the movies, the Matrix “code” looks a lot like Japanese katakana. In those Path of Neo menus they’re *literally* just reversed katakana. Reversed ス and ツ and セ, etc. 😂
As I understand it they are chopped up katakana- I don’t know how true this is but I believe the person who created it said that they were characters from his Japanese (?) wife’s cookbooks scanned and then chopped up

I always thought Ghost liked Niobe, not Trinity. I don’t recall there being any hint of Ghost and Trinity having any interaction…

I did! very little actual content unfortunately, since it's a tech demo-- but it just makes me want a matrix game even more.

...wait, you got Path of Neo to work on PS2? My copy refuses to load aside from 1 time. I've had the disc resurfaced twice, cleaned to the point it could work as a mirror, and even tried on different PS2 consoles with different model numbers, and my copy just doesn't want to work on my console. I've had to rip the disc to play on PCSX2, as the emulator runs it flawlessly when the settings are right
Resurfacing does a little bit of damage every time. You probably damaged it worse by cleaning it so extensively :(
@@Kaceydotme Most of the cleaning I would do was with a microfiber cloth and cd/DVD cleaning solution, the resurfacing I got done after a month of failed attempts to get the game to work. For what I was told back when I bought it, it is a common issue with The Path of Neo, but back then, there was no explanation as to why it occurs. Some forums online still exist of people asking why the game won't load. Me ripping my copy shows the data on the disc is undamaged, but for some reason the disc itself is causing the problems

played the path of Neo on PC when it came out. Wasnt as bad for me as the dunkeys video would suggest. actually had alot of fun with it.
Crazy how ghost was in love with trinity but trinity was smashing Neo 😂

Watching the movies, the Matrix “code” looks a lot like Japanese katakana.
In those Path of Neo menus they’re *literally* just reversed katakana. Reversed ス and ツ and セ, etc. 😂
As I understand it they are chopped up katakana- I don’t know how true this is but I believe the person who created it said that they were characters from his Japanese (?) wife’s cookbooks scanned and then chopped up
