It's very janky but it's still very cool conceptually and the 'hacking' system is a really cool way to contextualise bonus content that really adds a lot of flavour.
Overall it is clear that they put a lot of effort into the game, even if it feels like several of the elements are seriously underdeveloped

    • @BucklingSwashes
      @BucklingSwashes 2 года назад +1

@@casanovafunkenstein5090 Well put. It definitely seems like the devs had a great deal of passion for the game, and put some great ideas into it, and yeah, the hacking aspect was both thematically appropriate and still remains really unique today.

I never played Path Of Neo, but I remember my mind being blown by the fact that Enter The Matrix (which I had on the OG Xbox) had a huge hacking metagame at the main menu that allowed you to unlock tons of new game modes and cheats for the main story. Most notably, it really did feel like you were genuinely learning to hack. It didn't tell you anything about how to get started (typing HELP was the best secret, from what I remember), and really did require you to experiment and test out commands until you found out how to get lists of available commands and start learning shortcuts and typical sequences that you could use in different places. It added a TON of content and replayability for the game. I get the sense most people never really did much with it, though.

I loved it, even though at the time I played it I didn't understand how the story tied into the movies, and I vaguely remember even playing a short lived MMO for a while. TBH I think a fair few complaints about these games in the video might just come down to playing on PC. Both games were clearly designed for controllers and I think they're better, more stable experiences on console. In particular, Path of Neo looks and feels a lot smoother when you're not using a mouse.
I've never seen the PC versions of these games before and this footage was genuinely shocking. These games always looked pretty bad in motion, but not THAT bad!

Man this takes me back, I haven't played the first game but played the hell out of the second. I think that this is more a matter of taste but even from the clips shown the combat in the path of neo just FEELS punchy, can't comment on the actual gameplay as I have not played the first but idk, I look at it and it looks and feels far too floaty for me. Still have fond memories of path of neo so I would rather not go back and destroy them like I did to some others (Like Freelancer recently)

  • @InMaTeofDeath

I actually really liked the combat of enter the matrix the problem was everything died way too quickly for you to actually enjoy it. The best part for me was the level with the vampires since they couldn't die until you staked them and the difference in fun between the vamps and the normal enemies was so great I would replay the game just to get to that part and quit when it was over.

Good video, thanks. I'm currently replaying both these games (PS2) which is why I found this vid - I was desperate to see if it wasn't just me who was finding Path of Neo so disappointing!
Absolutely agree re the DMC comparisons, but Shiny seemed desperate for cover mechanics too (though these would only really be relevant if adapting the lobby shootout from the first film), which a style fighter wouldn't really be compatible with. .
Also fascinated that in the office escape, you say you can get caught! I got caught at one point and had to restart and after this succeeded in escaping with Trinity.

I first encountered Enter the Matrix while staying a friend's house. At the time, I felt it was an inspired Matrix game. It still looks good, though I can see its flaws now. It's a shame the Wachowski brothers didn't give Shiny enough time to properly finish the game. It's an even bigger shame that Wachowskis messed up the development of The Path of Neo. Considering the time and effort they put into their films, you would think they'd understand how much effort a good video game takes. Maybe they had to abide by Hollywood deadlines, which still doesn't give enough time for game developers to properly polish.
I'm still astonished that Shiny Entertainment was chosen out of all possible game companies to develop the tie-in Matrix games. I'm even more astonished that Shiny wasn't allowed to do their own original Matrix game, because I think they could've nailed it... Providing they were given enough time to finish it. Shiny was the same company that did Earthworm Jim 1+2, MDK, Messiah, and Sacrifice. If Shiny were allowed to do a proper Shiny-esque Matrix game, I can see MDK and Sacrifice as templates for such a game. Messiah would also be a good influence, but without the bad platforming.
An MDK-styled Matrix game with the environmental and engine effects of Sacrifice would've been incredible.
Considering how Sacrifice's engine was able to pull off vast environments, environmental destruction, and fluid gameplay. Imagine if they applied those effects in a well-designed city-based environment. Combining what MDK did well with what The Matrix did well in a dynamic and reactive city-like game environment would've been very ambitious. Of course, an MDK-styled Matrix game can't include attacking cows or small nuclear explosives like MDK did, but it can combine MDK's shooting, sniping system, controls, and reactive enemy AI with The Matrix's bullet-time effects and weapons arsenal.
There are other games that are worth borrowing from for a Matrix game. There's Deus Ex, Kingpin, System Shock 2, Thief 1+2, and Meta Gear Solid 2. An immersive, RPG adventure simulation would suit The Matrix's universe. Since Enter the Matrix had problems with driving, an ideal Matrix game should look to Driver or Interstate '76 for inspiration. But of course, the crazy action of MDK would be a must influence for a Matrix game's gameplay.

Great job with this analysis video!
I never got a chance to play Enter the Matrix but I agree with you that I'm glad that the two main playable characters were BIPOC.
I used to love playing Path of Neo. But the way you break it down, in this video, brought back memories of some stuff I didn't like about it. I agree the destructible environments was one of my favorite things about the game.
My favorite level was the one where you had to fight the Witch to save the Rogue Witch. I think they should've included both of those characters in the newest film. I
I didn't like that there weren't any cheat codes (used to love those) as I never got to acquire all of Neo's unlockable abilities. The level with the humanoid ants was strange. The ants were annoying as it took forever to kill them. I also didn't like the level where you had to keep fighting that agent, on that platform, where you were supposed to push him off. It dragged on too long. I also didn't utilize the bullet dodge as much as I should've.
One of the game's unlockable feature, I think that was underutilized, was the Zion Archives level where you can see the models of characters they didn't make it to the game. I think it should've been like a secret mission level, using all the models, instead of a character museum :

I'm disappointed to hear you say you didn't find any jokes in Enter the Matrix because Sparks (the operator) is non-stop hilarious moments. Asking if he can have Ghost's stuff when he dies, saying "my vestigial butthole", ranting and raving about the danger. It's almost too much for the tone of the series and yet I think it still holds up as very funny.

I also think that while the movie gave Niobe enough screen time to hint at her life, we got almost nothing about Ghost, so his story bits (brother to Trinity, unrequited love for her, his deep philosophical nature) were great. His whole scene with The Oracle made the entire game worthwhile, I think.

11:33 'shiny did extensive motion capture work to make neo's move as realistic as possible'
Show neo literally throwing an agent like a fucking fan

HA! The One combo from that game is the only thing I remember from playing a bit of that game when it released. Good times, although terrible design - who could pull this stuff off?

Me and my friends loved Enter the matrix as 14/15 year olds. Path of Neo I played on my own and was initially disappointed however nowadays I prefer Path of Neo.

I played both games on PS2 when they came out. I remember being disappointed by Enter The Matrix and how clunky it felt, but really enjoyed Path Of Neo. The only cool thing I found with ETM's story was how the Merovingian's henchmen were vampires and werewolves (something alluded to in the films but never explored).

This is a game they should remake on the unreal 5 engine. It had potential

How is it that during the scene at 15:55 the subtitles (and assumedly the audio itself) refer to them as Lana and Lili even though neither of them had come out as trans yet??

I believe that Laurence Fishburne was the only actor to reprise their role for Path of Neo. The replacements for the rest aren't too bad. They got Jennifer Hale for Trinity, which I enjoy her work so it wasn't too bad for me.
I feel like for the time it was alot better. Were just used to such higher budget and polish in games than back then I find.

As a youngun, I loved Path of Neo, and subsequently bought Enter The Matrix to be massively disappointed. ETM has so many flaws, primarily floaty controls, absurd difficulty spikes and fairly unsatisfying combat. PoN has some issues, mainly in how near the end it tries to do weird things with invincible enemies and weird puzzle platforming, but the combat feels great - it was the best multi-enemy combat before the Arkham games. I do wonder if Chris' experience was overly affected by using mouse an keyboard, as I played it on PS2, and the combat felt smooth as butter, and felt amazing.
