    You have to give The Wachowskis credit - the game was an ambitious project and I can't think of anything else like it in terms of movie tie-ins. It's a shame it was ruined by being rushed. Never bothered me as a kid though. I thought it was awesome.

    • @masterneme
      @masterneme 6 лет назад +29

      It was too ambitious, I bought it full price and finished it BEFORE watching the movie because it was said that you would get extra pieces of the story...
      The result after playing the game and watching the movie? Double disappointment.

      Back in the 90s, the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was a similar tie-in project, even a bit more ambitious (you had the game, the book, a comic book, an action figure line and even a soundtrack, IIRC).
      BTW, it would be interesting to see Gggman reviewing this game on PC. Loved it as a 12 year old.

    Loved the Matrix and even a lot of Reloaded back in the day, and spent quite a few hours with Enter the Matrix. I think it was a weird idea to follow two new boring characters, and the action wasn't as smooth as Max Payne, but I remember enjoying most of the (non-sewer/factory) levels. The hidden 2-player fighting game was kind of fun for a small while too. It wasn't a great game, but was one of the better licensed games that I remember, they clearly were TRYING for something new and faithful to the movies, at least.

    I remember watching a documentary or something on the whole sunglasses thing a long time ago (on TV still wow). If I recall correctly the sunglasses thing came from the prime source material "Ghost in the Shell" film where the a lot of character's were given sunglasses because it was simpler and easier to draw frame by frame instead of eyes which would require more time and effort. So its actually a production gimmick that became a "cool" aesthetic associated with the dystopian future theme that was carried over for "The Matrix" and others like "Deus Ex".

    One thing I remember fondly about this game was the way you activated cheats.
    IIRC it was a full on "hacking" minigame accessed from the main menu that, while not actually particularly complicated, still felt like you were actually doing something because you were following breadcrumbs and using logic to know what commands to use next.

    The early 2000s were very interesting times for video games and media in general. There's no way that, in today's world, you could make a movie tie-in game that was almost necessary to understand the entirety of a film or trilogy. It's almost like the Wachowskis had this insight into the (relatively new, at least when it came to 3D graphics and "realism") medium of video games, it didn't go over particularly well, and now anyone who even thinks about tying movies and games together in this fashion is sneered at by others in the movie-making business. They've forced the medium to take a step back without even thinking of the possibilities.
    Now all we get are boring "movie-like" games such as God of War that just wish they could be movies.

    • @ElGaby323
      @ElGaby323 3 года назад +3

      And The Last of Us, and pretty much every Sony exclusive. They're all just movies.

      First of all we wouldn't have the games we have today without the early 00s era.. Many of those franchises are still going.. And second the only reason we don't still see these type of games is production has gotten out of hand and since it takes 4-8 years to make a AAA game there is no way you plan it along with a movie unless it's the avatar franchise.. Also licensing of music etc has become such a bitch that it's not worth it for the developers, at some point the licnence deal run out and they have to delist the game

    Shiny was in its death throes in the 2000s. Before EtM they made Messiah and Sacrifice, neither of which sold big numbers and are considered cult hits today. Several key team members like Doug TenNapel, Nick Bruty, and Bob Stevenson left Shiny to pursue new projects like Neverhood (TenNapel,) and Giants: Citizen Kabuto (Bruty & Stevenson.) Their publisher Interplay was going bankrupt and sold them to the incompetent morons at Infrogrames/Atari in 2002. At the time of the sale EtM was Shiny's only project in the pipeline as Doug Perry had instituted a 'No Sequels' policy, leading Interplay to hand MDK off to Bioware. EtM was considered Shiny's last 'hit' despite how sloppy it was while Path of Neo failed to sell (likely because people were still salty over Matrix Revolutions.) Atari sold Shiny off to Foundation 9 in 2006 and Foundation 9 immediately merged what was left of Shiny with The Collective and form Double Helix Games. Doug Perry resigned by the time of the sale, meaning anybody worth a shit from Shiny's glory days was gone.

    • @The_Isaiahnator
      @The_Isaiahnator 6 лет назад +1

      Especially since games are so respected as a medium nowadays that tie-ins are no longer necessary. I think Rocksteady Games had a large part to play in that with their excellent work on the Arkham games. Additionally, The Matrix property is owned by Warner Brothers, the same publishers behind the Arkham games. WB Games is a powerhouse publisher, so another Matrix game should be feasible if they find the right developers for the job.

    I always felt that if they'd had 6 more months to work on the game it would have been legendary... As it is it's a neat little tie-in to go along with the movie and a few hours of awesome fun before it becomes frustrating fighting the bugs and glitches.

    I ADORED and played the hell out of this game as a kid!
    It was buggy as hell, completely rushed and incomplete, Niobe and Ghost are boring-ass characters, but nevertheless a great tie-in! I loved both The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded (always kinda disliked The Matrix Revolutions...) and this game really felt like both of those movies, all while expanding the lore.
    Ghost and Trinity didn't need to be siblings and only Niobe's story is sort of canon (judging by scenes from Reloaded and her mentioning the Oracle in Revolutions), the sewers were friggin tedious, but other than that this game was alot of fun!

    Gotta say I thought the vampire levels were so cool back then (haven't played in like at least 12 or so years?) just something about stabbing a stake into an enemy after mopping the floor with them was so satisfying. Certainly a game with its bad parts overblown, I mean I remember it being glitchy even as a youngster but so many reviewers just drag on about the ways it hasn't aged well, especially the graphics. Never understood why people say it's so ugly, jank animations aside, I mean it's from 2003 people with the PS2 in mind :P

    It's nice to see a balanced review of this game. A lot of people usually look at it and are like, "Durrr, dis game suxxors" without spending time with it. It's not all that good, but like it was mentioned in the video, it's not anywhere near as bad as it's usually made out to be. It was pretty impressive when it came out, too. Shame it was rushed to launch nearly simultaneously with the second film. Matrix hype at the time was real, though, probably for the worse in the case of this game, unfortunately.

    I remember when I first got my PS2 back in the day, this was one of the games i was most looking forward to playing on it. I generally had a good time with it; enough to come back and replay it as the other character. I was pleasantly surprised to see they made the effort to show the same story from a different angle with occasional alternate objectives and though the characters were pretty damn bland, you did get a little affinity with both of them and their individual struggles - especially Ghost. On the whole, it definitely deserves more polish and more love for what it is. Enter The Matrix was one of the first of those that actually made the effort to tell its own story and not just regurgitate the story in the movie.

    When I was like 11/12 I used to rent this game allll the time. The Matrix was huge for kids my age, for at least a couple of years (I'm 31 now so this era really picked up steam in the early 2000s, in between the original and the 2 sequels). The whole bullet time thing and the shootout scene that takes place in the lobby with all the security was the holy grail of action parts that would affect how we played nerf gun wars or water gun fights, and changed how we swam in the pools as well, doing matrix moves underwater lol. All I know is that as a 12-13 year old this game was the closest you could get to the actual Matrix feel, and it was as close as we got to what we would imagine a great Matrix game to be with the technology of the time. We didn't really notice the finer details you notice when older with a critical eye, it was all just badass

    IIRC the Gamecube version (and perhaps others) had a debug kill screen left in that you can trigger by using gameshark codes to turn all weapons into bullet hoses, the shotguns especially could instantiate enough projectiles and effects to trigger the kill screen with a developer note regarding memory management.

    This game was flippin' awesome. It had a kick-ass hand-to-hand combat system with awesome moves, combined with a simple yet fun gunfighting system. Overall just a really fun game. I wonder why more games did not do it like this, mixing good gunslinging action with great hand-to-hand combat. You either get one or the other, but rarely both together.
