And what's most amazing is that he got sounds out of that Gibson SG that I would've never imagined came from that guitar(with the help of all those effects of course. And that Vibriola System is one of the worst tremolo systems Gibson ever made, but somehow he figured out a way to keep the guitar in tune, even with bending the bar back and doing crazy divebombs with it! I had the honour of meeting Frank a few times. The first time was when my band opened for him at a massive nightclub called called "Entex" (west of Toronto). This would have been about the mid/late 1980s. I would have been 24 or so - and he was my hero. I built up the nerve to say hello, and he spent the hour or so before the show telling stories and showing me riffs. @toonsthatrock Me too. Sure I got influenced by EVH, Beck, SRV, Clapton and many others. But it was Marino that got me practicing 8 hours a day for a while, till I had to get a job. Oh well, I had fun !
Was so lucky to him live at The Cow Palace, S.F. I was a HS sophmore, damn. His 1st live album is still one of my fave and a true benchmark for all 70s hard rock. He still smoked the stage 30 yrs later. You can hear the Jimi Hendrix influence. Yet Frank had such a unique style and sound. Mahogany Rush are unsung heroes of their genre.
A friend turned me on to his 78 Live album and it blew my mind. I fell in love with that very unique sound this guy gets out of that guitar. I have since collected all of his albums. Amazing albums, amazing sound.
I think I saw the second show ever of Frank with this band in Repentigny Quebec. It was in a small highschool cafeteria in 1972.We were both 17 years old.The sg howled thru a main fender amp with two tube fender bandmasters in unisson to boost the e.q.he also had two cabinets with two 15 inchers in each and two cabinets with four 12inchers in each. When he hit a high note my throat tensed up and my ears were buzzed for two days loll They blew everybody away.He played so cosmic Hendrix that at the end of the show everybody came out with their jaws locked open wondering what musical time tunnel they just went into.He was second to none even at that age.
Richard.. Ok..playing at a high school.. with 3 Fender heads, and 4 cabs?? And Frank was 17 years old??? LORD HAVE MERCY!! AND he could do all THIS stuff at age 17?? WHHHHAAAAaaaaatt!! CRAZY cool stuff!!
I never get tired of hearing this epic video of frank destroying his guitar. He rips the neck off of it... An ambulance had to take it to the emergency room for major traumatic injuries. . He was way ahead of his time. Should be in the Rock And roll Hall of Fame

I have no words to describe him with except most intense I ever heard while witnessing him at the Spectrum in Philadelphia when he opened for Kansas. Believe he actually opened for Kansas????? That night he did the National Anthem n even the younger crowd had their mouths opened in misbelief. But I had his albums before I saw him still do. Godspeed.
I'm sorry - he's not playing anything technically difficult. Just the usual clichés and pentatonic scales. Fast - yes but sounds the same over and over...

Well said, Mr Rick! The most important and under appreciated of electric guitarists. For acoustic, Paco de Lucia. Natch. But Frank? The man’s off the scale and on another planet!

Glad to see Mr Marino and MR getting some recognition always thought these guys should have been headlining huge events
He was the guy that made me want to pick up a guitar and play!
@toonsthatrock Me too. Sure I got influenced by EVH, Beck, SRV, Clapton and many others. But it was Marino that got me practicing 8 hours a day for a while, till I had to get a job. Oh well, I had fun !
I mean how? Just how? An SG and whammy bar pyrotechnics!!
Frank might be the most underrated guitar of all time!!
I seen do all this live so many times,in my eyes he's the best of all time
Was so lucky to him live at The Cow Palace, S.F.
When he hit a high note my throat tensed up and my ears were buzzed for two days loll
They blew everybody away.He played so cosmic Hendrix that at the end of the show everybody came out with their jaws locked open wondering what musical time tunnel they just went into.He was second to none even at that age.
Richard, thanks for sharing that. It's a great story of Rock n Roll history!!!!!
pleasure
Same things for me ,31 mars 1973 Polyvalente Cap de la Madeleine ,Quebec Admission 1.oo$ ,yeah one dollar
Lucky dog!! I would have paid a lot to see that concert. Never got to see him in person, but always a fan of Frank.
Richard.. Ok..playing at a high school.. with 3 Fender heads, and 4 cabs?? And Frank was 17 years old??? LORD HAVE MERCY!! AND he could do all THIS stuff at age 17?? WHHHHAAAAaaaaatt!! CRAZY cool stuff!!
Frank went into another world on this one.
No one comes close to this mans Talent. Jimi and Frank even to this day and i have seen the best live over 50 years
I never get tired of hearing this epic video of frank destroying his guitar. He rips the neck off of it... An ambulance had to take it to the emergency room for major traumatic injuries. . He was way ahead of his time. Should be in the Rock And roll Hall of Fame
Hard driving in your face pure rock n roll. That's why we love this guy
THIS is about the coolest greatest performance, ever!!
This has always (IMO) been the best version of this song. Nobody comes close.
truly one of my adolescent and all time favs! Rory G was another!
Totally agree. They played and play for the love of music, not fame or money. Pure souls they are/were.
Mahogany Rush Live and Stage Struck...pretty much all the inspiration you'll ever need. :)
@@allancrow134 I seen Rory in Vancouver in the early 70's I think the whole audience was I high on shrooms what a concert! I also seen Mahogany Rush's first tour besides playing in Montreal at the University of Windsor. :-) Peace
Godspeed.
We wish you well bro,)beautiful !!!😂
W?T?AAAAA?F? Simply incredible.
I'm sorry - he's not playing anything technically difficult. Just the usual clichés and pentatonic scales. Fast - yes but sounds the same over and over...
@@bob5951 it's the feel and the sound, sad that you are not understanding.
Technique or being fast is nothing special.
Truly a master of the guitar😎
In the 70s going to High School I go to bed every night listening to Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush 78 rpm vinyl on a Thorens TD-125 this player compares to a 8k oled tv !!! suspended player with electronic speed control 78 RPM Vinyl Import From Japan The sound quality was ridiculous analog--- it was like they were live in your room
I was dumb enough not keep ALL OF IT???
managed to see them live in 78 best guitarist ever
his live performance pretty much blows every one else away and trust me I have seen them all except for Hendrix
Well said, Mr Rick! The most important and under appreciated of electric guitarists. For acoustic, Paco de Lucia. Natch. But Frank? The man’s off the scale and on another planet!
Oh, and I also owned a Thorens.
😊
Marino and Mahogany Rush never get the love and appreciation given to other bands of their era. I heard of Mahogany Rush before I ever heard of Rush, thought they’d shortened their name.
wayne Harrison like Alex Lifeson of Rush both very underrated probably coz they didn't sell out to the dollar
Always and still is my favorite guitar player. There is no one better.
Ajs crystal Steve via
Absolutly, definitivly, surely, whatever the "ly" Brighter than the sun!!!!!
@@kenromine Vai for sure is great, but not in same class as Frank,he was the one who showed the likes of Vai what was possible. Influenced by Hendrix, but took it to another level.
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush always sold out their concerts back in the 70s and 80s
Especially in Texas USA
He was and is better than Hendrix was. Got to see him live. He really evolved with the guitar. Def. in the top 4 of all time
A great live band, I can happily say I got to see these guys at least twice. Guitar player heaven! They may not have had a lot of their own good songs, but they rocked hard whatever song they did play. Frank was a shredder before people even knew what shredding was.
What shall i say... i have no words to describe what i feel
I'm new to his music, WOW better later than never. Thank you Canada and THANK YOU FRANK MARINO😊😊😊
Amazing, playing with closed eyes, simply the best 🎸❤
I knew the name, I knew they rocked, yet, I couldn't squeeze them into my listening schedule/touring schedule...MAN, THEY ROCK! this solo on johnny b. goode is right up there with the epic performance of Ten Year's After's Alvin Lee at Woodstock....blazing, sizzling, soulful...Sorry I missed these cats live...MAN they rock
Wow one of my top 5 guitar players
Jim Ayoub 😍
@13:30 the sound of Marino literally blowing every other Guitarist away!
Frank Marino. None Other. Top Quality Rock n Roll since 1972.
The best in the buisness.
GENUINE musician and Rock Star!!
One of the best Rock concerts I've ever witnessed was Frank Marino
And mahogany Rush.
I saw Mr. Marino a few times back in the day. He's definitely not of this earth! I don't think I ever saw him stop to take a breath.
Saw Frank twice back on June 3rd 1979 back up Ted Nugent at the Boston Garden (must have been this tour), and also at the Channel club in Boston around the same Era.... my ears bled for a week after each show as i was only a few rows back at the Garden and up against the stage at the Channel..... It was worth every drop of blood that came from my ears! It was being in the presence of God! Frank Marino WAS rocknroll! That is how it should be done! I'm hoping for a miracle cure of his illness, as my buddies and I had tickets to see him again in September. REAL rocknroll will die the day Frank is gone!
I always dig a drum solo at a rock concert and this has a cool one!
I did not know of this guy. Astounding.
Cool Canadian cat.
Well everyday is a school day! I am very old and only today discovered this man. I shall spend many a happy hour going through his back catalogue.
Same energy when Nuge was in his prime but only a lot better !
Frank, Jimmy & Paul. Simply the greatest.
I remember listening to Frank back in the day. God bless rock and roll.
Canadian Guitars at it’s Best!🎸🤩🎸
I saw Frank and crew at Rock and Roll marathon and it changed my shit for me!!!
This man has definitely shaped my view of how rock guitar playing should sound like... Great stuff!
Bought a Mahogany Rush album in '78, never listened to Frank Marino since. I am ashamed.....and worse, have been musically comatose for 40 yrs. Apologies, Frank Marino! Holy mother of 6 strings!
*From 1974 to 1980 Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush kicked ass where ever they played. Some big name bands didn't like them, I wonder why.*
