- Frank Marino was a hard acid rock guitarist who rose to fame with his band Mahogany Rush in the late 60's and on into the 70's. Many compared him to Jimi Hendrix and reporters came up with some wild stories about the Frank and Jimi connection. This video will cover Franks early life and what he has to say about the Hendrix stories.

_Frank Marino And Mahogany Rush Live_ is an essential listen.
I got to see Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush in Seattle 1975. They opened for Montrose and Black Sabbath. Frank Marino came out and stole the show. I understood back then, even though I was only 15, why he was compared to Hendrix. He played The Star Spangled Banner. He played the guitar with his teeth and behind his head. We went to a TON of concerts in Seattle in the '70s and '80s at many different venues. This particular concert was my all-time favorite and most memorable. I'd never heard of Mahogany Rush or Frank Marino prior to the concert. Afterward, I ran out and bought Strange Universe and have been a huge fan ever since.
Killer story!
Awesome story 😎
I would have loved to see that show.
I saw him in Connecticut in 77.mind blowing, period.
Unreal live.
I saw Mahogany Rush in the mid 70's in Louisville, KY at The Garden. Paid less than $2 for the ticket and sat 3 rows back right in front of Frank.
By the way, that tour became their live album!
I remember seeing him on Don Kirshners rock concert he was beyond cool.
Recently found "Mahogony Rush Live" on vinyl. No scratches..Very cool. Frank is very important to many of us. Thanks for video!
I saw them in the mid 70's in Ft Wayne, IN they were great !!! Thanks for the documentary man !
Glad you enjoyed it
He's from my hometown of Verdun Montreal Quebec. I saw him in June '78 at Place de Nation in Montreal. It was an outdoor show and Eddie Money opened the show.
I saw Frank in the summer of 1979 opening for Kansas. He was great. Unfortunately that was the only time that I saw him. I believe that the band played All Along The Watchtower.
If you’re interested… the album “Mahogany Rush 4” will change your life. More recently, Frank Marino live at the Agora theatre is a true testament to this man’s talents. His vocals are equally as stellar & one of a kind.
Thanks for the presentation, well done
They opened the first Texas Jam in Dallas in July’78. Blew us away when they finally came on late that night.
I never knew much about MR, so I appreciated your video documenting them and Frank Marino in particular.
A buddy and I went to see him when we were high school in 1980 at the Long Beach Arena in California, and it was the loudest concert I have ever been to, hands down. There was a kid and his parents seated next to us, a kid who looked like he had some issues with drugs and alcohol, perhaps, and his parents were there to be supportive and keep him out of trouble. 30 seconds in, they were furiously stuffing Kleenex in their ears with a horrified look on their faces. To their credit, they made it through the entire concert. Our ears rang for a week afterwards, and I'll never forget the look on the parent's faces.
I never had the opportunity to see Marino live. Wish I had! But he was definitely one of the guys I played on the stereo that made my Dad yell "Turn that shit down!!" 🤣🤣
Yessss
Thanks for the video!
“Poppy” is my favorite 🎸
Frank Marino is a true innovator with guitar techniques.
1. Behind the bridge guitar picking to produce one off sounds.
2. Backward guitar lines live in real time.
3. Faux slide playing/sound emulation with a primitive Gibson Vibrola Tremelo system.
4. Master of sounds equal to or surpassing even the great Adrian Belew.
I wonder if Frank Marino was ahead of the curve with the Wet/Dry/Wet/ live amp set ups that became popular in the 80's. Was he doing that in the 70's?
He also had and used one of the first wireless guitar receiver prototypes live from Schafer-Vega. (1976?)
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day river docs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you. Same to you
Thank you. Same to you
Frank Marino - Robin Trower are the true guitar GODS ✨🎸🎸✨☮️( Neither had or wanted commercial success )
Robin Trower had huge commercial success
I seen him in '78 or '79 at Comiskey Park for their second year of Summer Jam. Their were I believe 5 or 6 bands and I forget which ones went together because I was at both of them! But I do remember that Frank Marino had a cast on his right hand and after a little while he went backstage and had them take it off because he said that it was limiting him too much! I read that in a paper review the next day.
RD,
Thanks great video and I learn from you. The 70's experimenting with LSD brings back many memories of crazy crap. Glad Frank made it through to become a great rocking entertainer. Boe
Saw him at the Warner Theater in DC for $1.01 for a DC101 radio promotion in 1978.
He had a wall of Acoustic amps, and a
daisy chain of 9 effect pedals.
Big sound!
Great show. The bass player could play and dance shuffle like James Brown. As I hit my mid 60s, I know about the frozen shoulder and trying to play guitar issue too.
Was Franks set up very complicated and/or different than what other guitarists were doing at the time do you know? People mentioned this wet/dry/wet amp set up that was popular in the 80's. It has been said that VanHalen used this but didn't invent this type of amp set up.
Saw Frank & MR with Humble Pie / Angel / Mothers Finest at the Hampton Coliseum in 1980. All different, all great that day. Funny, I can’t find any reference as to the specific date, but that lineup was touring in that area, at that time
April 8th, 1980 $5 tickets

Listen to Moonlight Lady. ❤
Yep, and Making My Wave
@@DaleBrotherton Such great music. You may like my More Sunday Schtuff Playlist. Great old rock.
A friend went to see Mahogany Rush...this was in Chicago....after the show Frank went in the bar...and my friend and frank shot a few games of pool...
My only album was "Child of the Novelty" and the live album...awesome guitar player.
A band I roadied for...played Franks song "Dragon Fly".
It’s odd. Way more cooler catchy bluesy jams than srv. Judy did get radio attention.
First concert I went to in 78 along with Nazareth. First time I got high too...
Nazareth rocked too!!! Sounds like a great concert!
@@RiverDocs he came out on stage and proceeded to make his guitar sound like a machine gun and everybody in front acted like they got shot lol. Daytona's Peabody auditorium. Saw Charlie Daniels for my second concert there...
MAHOGANY RUSH

Weed Me
LAND OF A 1,000
NIGHTS
WHAT IS HE SAYING
AT THE END i STILL
HAVE TROUBLE ON
TRANSLATION OF IT
Lyrics....
Well you…
You think I’m crazy, but that’s not true
Well it’s just that I’ve been
To a million hells to pay for my sins
Well hey! What I’m sayin’…
Is you better be right when you speak of my plight
Or I’ll be comin’ to take you back down with me
To the Land of a Thousand Nights!
If I’m just insane
Then treat me lightly and don’t complain
And if I seem uptight
And if it seems that my soul is black as night…
But if you’re wrong, you better be strong, yeah,
’cause I’ll be comin’ after you to take you back down
To the Land of a Thousand Nights
Cold, so cold I can’t pretend…
The man in the outfield, with the bonnet head…
Crystal clear auntie viola, wet blacknose Saint Bernard dog,
And there is Alpha-Omega, clearly put water on his tarnished tongue…
Crying moons, can you dig the sheep goddess?
She’s feeling red feathers from a salvation army cup…
And did you think I wasn’t going to blacken his room?
For surely a thousand nights couldn’t help but be
Draining his soul away…
Say then; “Sholyo Im Fi Zhamy - Sholyo Im Fi Zhay…”

He was a good guitar player. I never thought of him as sounding like Hendrix...
you can hear the jimi influence in him big time during the 70s
The greatest guitar player who ever lived.
No one compares to Hendrix. No one.
He is a million times better then hendrix
Nope
Lol frank didnt have the songwriting skills that jimi did
