I am almost 40 years old now.... I still get that feeling going through my spine. Rage is a gift.
I'm 63 and still loving Rage Against the Machine.
Same. I feel that this song speaks more to me as I get older.
I'm 71 and still rocking' with Rage. They are so visceral & vital . . . they will always be relevant as far as i'm concerned . .
Just here to say my father is in his 50s and he raised all his girls on this music too
@@robyn00xx I must salute him the only way I know: Hello Father-in-law hahaha. He did it well.
This song will always hold a very special place for me. I was a DJ at my college radio station when it was released and the station was on cable FM, meaning that the local cable tv provider broadcasted us on one of their channels. As a result, we were subject to the same broadcast standards as cable tv and we had to play the censored version. A couple of years later, I came in to do what I thought would be my final shift at that station .. I was planning to move onto another school in the fall .... and being the obnoxious, unruly adolescent that I was at the time. I proceeded to play every song in the station that contained a profanity. Before going out the door, I left Killing in the Name on repeat. Life got in the way and I ended up returning to that college for a couple more semesters and rejoining the radio staton. Fortunately, the new GMs liked me, so I didn't get in any kind of trouble for my little stunt. They just let me know that the song played for 3 days before someone stopped it. 🤣
3 days of Rage! Epic!
Legend
This gig was at the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands. It actually caused an earthquake with all the people dancing and jumping to this song!!!!
Facts, I was there and it was mental🤘🏻🤘🏻
Gotta love American rock based in anti racism motifs baby!!! Nobody does it like black Americans when it comes to music……I love my people
"Some of those that work forces
Are the same that burn crosses"
1992, this song is from 1992!!! Let's just hope this song loses relevance at some point.
Thank you Beth for reacting to this kind of songs as well 👏
Those that burned crosses were supporters of the Democratic Party. Democrats still use and push racial divisions as a tool to garner votes and support.
That referes to cops, lawyers and judges being in the KKK!
Cops. Back in the day many cops were members of KKK. It's a true story
@@barrymantz6026 Blue Klux Klan
It wont, its human nature.
When the band found out about their song being pushed for the Christmas song, they said they would do a free concert if it won. There is a video of the song campaign and concert in London.
ruclips.net/video/DhiyKZsAW44/видео.html
Few bands kick off their set as intensely as Rage did that night.
When they announced Wutang Clan and Rage tour I literally thought the world was ending. That show was insane!
I was there! And yes it was. Major mosh pits going on LOL
Wow!
I've had the honour to see them live back in 1996, and this song is even more relevant today! Fight the power!
Fun fact: this song isn't only about American racism. De La Rocha was talking about the racial biases of the Western world as a whole here, using only America as an example for everyone's convenience.
I hope they also addressed it to people like my Chinese-Australian student, who wrote 'I hate Indians' on his pencil case? On asking where he learned that he proudly told me that his (Chinese) parents hate Indians and he learned it from them. Something something only white people are racist 🤔
If there's ever a time in US history that we need Rage back, it's right now. I was so happy when Prophets Of Rage came out with an album a few years ago, but we need more of these messages circulating!
Their music is great, but they have shit takes.

You are absolutely right. Every time I hear this song, it set shivers down my spine. I feel every word he says, because nowadays, we live in a world of lies, of total control, of madness, we are losing our rights, our freedom. When i hear this, I want to go out, and shout, hoping everyone doing the same, standing up against this criminal system, and the criminals who control it. I hope this will change some day, and we will have a better future, with real equality, with real justice, with real freedom, with real health and no more lies
They're no longer raging against the machine. They are complacent for the machine now.
Check out Run the jewels.
One of their best musical talents is using silence as an instrument. They know when to drop out right before it gets too repetitive and how to pull you back in. It’s a talent that they are masters at.
The band set up a free open air concert with four supporting acts in London as a thank you to those who supported their Christmas number 1. I went with my son and we had a great time. Money raised by the music and concert was donated to homeless charities. Putting their money where their mouths are.
Last I saw they already raised $3mil for charity on their upcoming tour. Probably more now since I saw that last year. Love them
During quarantine I did a deep dive into British/UK panel shows, and the gent who started all of that was a guest on the Big Fat Quiz show that year.
Even now almost every one of their reunion tour dates they’ve donated $100,000+ from tickets
Didn’t expect to ever see you react to RATM but Thank You!! This is an amazing song but all you got to see is Zack’s passion. He is an amazing lyricist, truth teller and has one of the best flows ever. I would love to see you react to more Rage. I would recommend Wake Up, Bulls on Parade or Know Your Enemy.
Zack is an under-appreciated genius & legend. I love the way he utilizes his vocals. ❤️
Yes!!!!!! We need more of these artists who call out the injustice in the world. Thank you for reacting to this. Many people would be too afraid to.
We need more people to do the actual fighting, not protesting on the weekend when its comfortable.
I've always had the utmost respect for you. Your take on this song and the power of music just solidified that so much more. I'm so glad I discovered your channel a few years ago.
Seen a lot of vocal coaches reactions... but you are by far the best. You go deeper into what we are hearing and seeing. Thank you. Much appreaciated.
As the US drifts between autocracy and democracy (anocracy) we do need bands like this to energize the youth and hopefully change things.
And of course, I hope bands like this gain influence across the globe as well. The US isn't the only nation struggling against autocrats.
The US is no where near an autocracy. Also US is not technically not a democracy either. You really need some perspective.
To me, the song is written as a protest. Not just the lyrics, but the overall structure of the song. In my mind when I hear it, I picture Zack with a megaphone at the head of 10,000 people on a march. The repetitive lyrics are a chant that he is leading. Their destination is protected by riot police. At the end, the cops demand that they all disperse. The protesters deliver their response, and all hell breaks loose.
Was supposed to see Rage two years ago. Would have been really powerful given that it was an election year, plus what happened in the aftermath of George Floyd. But of course the tour rightfully got cancelled. But I should finally be able to see them in almost exactly 2 months. Will be my first time seeing Rage, fingers crossed.
I’m 56, and to this day nothing gives me energy like listening to Killing In The Name. It’s instant adrenaline to the point where I’d swear I have - if only for a moment - superhuman strength.
You know… I never thought Rage would be on this page but wow I’m here for it
I love this band ... its not just a political attitude, its an inner attitude ... for the proletariat, against the establishment. BTW a realy realy extraordinary band too. Sleep now in the fire is also a realy realy good song
You said it mate. No bosses, no masters.
Not their attitude nowadays.
@@Y0PPS The band still plays festivals from time to time but each of them still follows the same ideals and goals. You can read about it everywhere and here on RUclips there are certainly videos with the right interviews from their own mouths. So I would like to disagree with you. Out of respect for Beth and her content, I will not post any kinda links here.
Such a great, important song. Thanks for this reaction. You’re absolutely right about the importance of protest songs, and this is one of the best.
RATM is a great band that shows how our government and big companies, people who are the 1% or‘s control what happens in our country. Tom morello knows better than anyone having received a political science degree from Harvard university, the most prestigious university in our country. RATM It’s also the only band to ever close down Wall Street before the end of the day.
yeah... they´re really a band for the working class. whilst charging 300 dollars for a ticket. they´ve sold out a long time ago. but it´s not their fault, it´s just what happens after you get successfull
yep, RATM are needed more now than ever. the same crap that was going on 30 years ago is sill being perpetrated by the same people, but the Tea Party have now become even more extremist than they ever were. [el'sda2]
@@jahrolo it so happens that they give most of it for charity
@@jahrolo Bands must have to be homeless to get your respect. I'm sure you'd be saying no to all that cash. GTFU out of here with that BS. Get your hand out of other men's pockets!
@@darrennorthcutt1646 never said that and never meant it that way. So calm your titts. All I'm saying it's about the image - can't sing about being against the system whilst taking full advantage of it. Hope you get my point :)
Why spending it to charity and not just charge 50 bucks instead of 300?
One of your best reactions and intense content... bold move 💪🏻😉🔥 keep more of this kind of reactions coming 😎
Thank you for reviewing! Your take was articulate and spot on, regarding the importance of RATM’s message.
Beth you never cease to impress me with the broad scope of music that you engage in. you just "get it" when others don't. I guess that's why I enjoy your channel so much.
pure burst of energy, that is how i eplain that song.
Best concert I ever saw (RIP Roseland Ballroom). Zach walks the walk, he had the crowd in the palm of his hand and could have made us do anything he wanted.

has anyone asked for Portishead?
@@da_unobanner why
because portishead is amazing?
Thanks for doing this! I loved your insight and analysis. I had forgotten about that Christmas campaign, and I didn't know about that Tom Morello story, about when he came up with the riff. Such a great song, with a powerful message!
Love how you immediately jump into the reaction. I'm so used to people taking a minute or two to give their life story beforehand. Also your research is much better than most.
Their best live recorded show was when they performed in the UK (Finsbury Park, London) as thanks to the fans for Christmas #1
Great band. The lyrics are obviously strong and deep. Great bassline. Simple but strong drums. Very interesting and different guitar playing. This song is so relevant even today.
I admire all artists who use their platform to better the world!
Rage was one of the "hell yea" bands in my teens. Have listened to them my entire life... until the concert restrictions began to let up in 2021.
Rage announced a tour and I was so heart broken and saddened and felt betrayed to the cause they stood strong for when they fell in line and required vaccination to attend the show. My how far the mighty have fallen. All respect has been lost for this band.
This review was so good. Your message was spot on and you managed to put into words what many of us are feeling. I believe you'd be an incredibly helpful mentor for kids & teenagers. Keep being you!
I’ve been thinking about the genealogy of Rage Against the Machine. There was obviously that Zapatista connection, but I can hear Bad Brains, Black Flag and Public Enemy in their music. It’s post-punk hardcore meeting rap.
AAAAAAAAAARGH, this was one of my suggestions, thank you for doing this one! :)
I didn't think you would do this one due to the explicit lyrics probably colliding with the RUclips algorithm, hahaha. XD
Yeah, the lyrics are repetitive and simple, but it is all about the build-up of energy every time a line is repeated a little bit different every time and then finally the release of all that bottled up energy, which makes it so good.
Well that exact line is related to Algorithm too
RATM… Thank you Beth, the world needs this.
Rage is a perfect example of how American music can never be duplicated especially from us minority artists . The level of “I’m fed up with you shit” can’t be matched
Yay! RATM!
You go Beth RAM rocks that message song indeed tom Morello is an incredible guitarist
This whole album was mind-blowing. "Down Rodeo", "Township Rebellion", "Bombtrack", "Bullet in the Head", there was no filler on that album. Every track was its own little masterpiece, musically and lyrically. Put it on and listen start to finish, you won't regret it.
You’re right this album is killer start to finish. Down Rodeo is off Evil Empire though 😁
Few have matched their raw energy!!!!
Very happy to see you react to this song/performance. It really is/was a great one. Good vibes to ya.
:)
Classic perfection from 92, memories of a very loud open top car MR2 stereo blasting this through Hamilton town centre on a hot summer day and people looking shocked ! Rage on
Great choice. This really is a sign of the times.
This is one of my go-to songs whenever I play drums. Such energy, and any anger I have in me at the time I can let out by playing those angry beats.
RATM is life, man. Such power and authenticity. I was blessed to be a teenager when this came out, it shaped my political views and my life.
And Tommy Morello is a fucking god.
Thanks Beth. Its a interesting reaction on a great rock group.🤘🤘👍👍
Surprised to see you with RATM, we should soon listen to you with The Offspring or things like that then 👍🎶
Yesssss!
The Offspring, as much as I enjoy them, don't belong in the same sentence as RATM.
To put an exclamation point on how universal the song his, listen to Voice of Baceprot's cover of it. VoB are three Muslem women from Sudan, living in Indonesia. Their fight is to be able to make music at all. Tom Morello loves the band and has told them he wants to collaborate.
ruclips.net/video/tYQY_msSFXw/видео.html
Their most played original song is God Allow Me Please to Play Music ruclips.net/video/WPVo_QyS0Hw/видео.html
Back in 1994, we played this song at the battle of the bands held at our high school every year. Our high school was a private, catholic Jesuit school might I mention.
bigups for not editing the whole talk about how music has a voice.
Never forget RATM made it in the UK long before anyone had heard of them in the USA.
Theyve said this MANY times in interviews.
Then tell me why you guvnors keep voting the Tories.
So stoked to hear this came in as no. 1 on the Christmas song. Was a huge protest against mass protest music like fro the once and has talent shows. People power 🤘
if your from the UK you might get this...... I think Tom wrote the riff after watching Grange Hill....listen again your see what i mean :)
Go see them live, like nothing else. No pyrotechnics needed the show is a powerful journey.
I think you articulated your meaning well. It's just like a sad song helping us when we're blue, but nt this case helping us with our, rage, rebellion or just any hostility.
I was there at Pinkpop in Landgraaf. And RATM made me ROAR too.
They are back on tour!!! And Beth, they also play 3 shows in the uk. Get that rage out!!
I'm going to the first two, not seen Rage since 96.
One of my favorite rap metal band
Well said Beth. Keep on Raging against the Machine!!
Beth you rebel! I loved this reaction ,you are both articulate and so correct.
I love RATM!!! thank you!! you have more songs from this performance Coachella to react!! Take the powerback!!
Beth, you GET it! You are a treasure and I'm such a fan now.
I knew Tommy Morello in college, we took some history courses together. We also both were involved in our university's Divest from South Africa protests (in the '80s), although he was more a leader, and I more a follower. This song blew my mind the first time I heard it. I saw them on their "Heartland" tour with the Wu Tang Clan!
This have to be the most Epic Pause just before the 1st kitno drop😂😅
Like an overcooked pie, the upper crust rests upon a differentiated core.
A very fragile crust. A volatile filling.
One of the most prole-centric analyses within pop music.
If you measure the whole of a pie, the upper crust is a tiny portion.
And if you cook a pie too hard and too long the filling bursts through by necessity.
So glad I go to see your beautiful smile beth it truly is one of the best I've ever seen ❤
I remember this coming out. When this got to number 1 at Christmas I got so drunk I sang this at the dinner table in front of my family then passed out into my dinner, apparently. Don't remember much. Best Christmas ever.
My band closes with this song. Such a banger! I play bass on it and it's so much fun and meaningful. When you think about the meaning, it's really easy to be angry when playing it.
Beth. You need to see the same song in a Concert in Santiago of Chile...
I just bought the album recently and i give it 10/10
Ratm is a killer band. 3 instruments...And Zach lol. Such a force live
Still one of the Greatest DEBUT Albums ever in Music History !...when PINKPOP Festival/Netherlands totally went mad !!!!!
Oh Pinkpop '93, that was a good year. Back then the mosh pit was still quite rough though, specially during harder acts like Rage. IIRC they were contracted quite early, and only a minor place on the announcement bill. In later editions they were quite a bit larger font :-)
Simon Cowell was one of the movers and shakers behind the great silver league massacre. All of a sudden, in the mid 90's a lot of artists that would score silver albums but then not get gold in 3 months of release, were dropped. You had bands on top of the pops that had just been dropped by their label on top of the pops. Then you had artists that did not get no1/platinum singles getting dropped before they could get an album out. Getting this to No#1 was an F you to that whole machine.
You get a sub for talking so positively about rage. And it's an added bonus your scottish
I saw them live in Houston, TX in 95 or 96 and I never thought I would die in a mosh pit before that day.
I like you do research on the songs before hand !! Great work
LOVE RATM! That being said, with a couple glasses of wine in me Zack kinda sounds like Sylvester the Cat on some tracks.

to bad it is not mentioned, but thumbs up for that increnible audience, my god i almost felt more energy from that audience then from RATM it self. Don't think it is my imagine, but you really could see how the singer really got into that raw energy, as it grow slowly on him during the song, as he loved it. I love RATM, but seeing this live with this audience, that was really something to me, epical.
Your anger is a gift
I feel like the repetitiveness of certain lyrics by Rage are almost like he is leading a protest & he is driving his point.
The story of where the riff came from is actually for Sleep Now in the Fire.
Zack grew up in LA and wittnessed racism first hand , they are a political activist band , I can't believe this song is 30 yrs old but still relevant, renegades of funk , bulls on parade, and Maggie's farm are tunes you'd love , as always I love your passion for music
I'm such a fan of your channel. Your reaction to Joe Cocker made me cry, and your video about Freddie was wonderful. Check out Voice of Bracepot's cover of this song from a recent show in Rennes, France. VoB are a trio of young ladies from Indonesia. Anyway, thank you for what you do, you are a highlight of my Youtubing experience!
Same people who say we need them now are the same people who call them sellouts
I'm fairly sure I have knocked someone out in the mosh pit when this song came on... completely accidentally, these things happen. amazing track.
De la rocha is mexican too makes me proud he was with tigeres del Norte si gong somos más americanos he’s all about social conciseness and governments and true freedom
I love your positivity even though the world is on the verge of revolution against the very people the band is talking about.
Not sure if it has been mentioned, but this song was written in response to the Rodney King beating by LA police, and the riots that followed then the cops were acquitted.
Been waiting for this
A society has to have laws! A society needs educational systems! Great reaction again Beth! 🙂
we watched "Love Actually", we know what christmass number one is :D
Boy have they really done a 180 since this song
By donating show profits to immigrant rights or by donating them to reproductive rights or by calling out Jan 6 traitors as some who burn crosses?
One of the most original bands ever. Will forever love them.
everybody should listen to the whole álbum from were they took this Song at least once as an inner meditation
