Kai .Isensee because the lyrics evolved to address police brutality specifically instead of generalized institutional racism. So, “some of those on the police force are the same people who are in the KKK” is what they’re saying.

This song actually has some additional history specific to the UK. For several years throughout the 2000s, the British version of The X Factor talent show (the name of which is also kind of a slap in the face to the metal community as it flagrantly dangles the name of an Iron Maiden album on a commercial property that represents the antithesis of everything they stand for) had been dominating the sales of the Christmas Number One in the music industry. The number one slot at Christmas was always especially coveted in the singles chart, and had seen many intense battles from industry greats over the years. People were starting to feel disenfranchised with the way that in recent times, that talent show had started acting as a capitalist conveyor belt, drawing in consumers, wrapping the show up just before the holiday period in order to sucker people into buying it for their loved ones while it was fresh in their minds. In 2009, a man named Jon Morter started a Facebook campaign to purchase the single "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine en masse during the week that sales would count towards the charting of the Christmas number one, as a protest against the manufactured stranglehold that Simon Cowell was beginning to have on the country's music industry during that holiday period. The group ended up with just shy of 900,000 members (of whom I was one). The choice was a little tongue-in-cheek, chosen especially for the anti-establishment refrain "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me", and garnered widespread media coverage, even going so far as to add the idea of it being unfair on the winning contestant to play into his sob-story narrative (no hate to the guy in question, he was an unfortunate casualty, a victim of circumstance). It became so topical that Rage were actually invited by Radio 1 (the UK's prime radio station, and part of the BBC) to perform the single live (which would be a super-fun thing for you to react to) to which they obliged. It was from the States, so it was very early in the morning UK time, but many of us woke up just to hear it. The battle became so intense that Cowell & his label decided to make the finalist's single a charity release, so that the proceeds would go elsewhere, and deter people from supporting the Rage song. As a response a donations page was set up so that supporters of the RATM campaign could also donate if they so chose to the British homeless charity Shelter. The page raised over £70,000 for the charity. On 20th December 2009, Radio 1 revealed on their official chart countdown that Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine had claimed the Number 1 spot for Christmas, selling 502,672 digital copies (setting a UK download record), and beating out the competition by about 50,000. As promised if they hit the number one spot, Rage Against the Machine played a totally free concert in Finsbury Park, London (chosen at random lottery from members of the Facebook group), where they also presented a cheque for £162,713.03 to the homeless charity Shelter, which included the combined donations of the Facebook group, as well as all additional royalties from the sales of the single made during that week. It was also one of the few times the band had performed together over the few years prior, and led to them getting a lot of slots at European music festivals the same summer.
Omg, that's amazing! It's so typical of people like Simon Cowell to grab something and turn it into their profit baby. I'm glad you guys were able to break that!

Tom Morello is an amazing guitar player & does crazy amazing things with a guitar. He's really good. It's amazing & sad & really disappointing that 27 years after this song & album were released we are still dealing with the same problems Rage Against The Machine wrote about in their lyrics. The way it feels now it's like these issues have only gotten worse. I still have hope for our country, but it gets harder everyday. Keep up the good work & keep spreading positive messages, it's appreciated.

One of the things that makes this song so brilliant lyrically is the repetition. He keeps hammering the same simple message, racist cops, over and over and over again so that the listener can not forget. Remember, this was 6 months after the LA riots, which were set off by white cops being acquitted of a hate crime that they obviously committed. This song perfectly captured the mood of a large (and growing to this day) portion of the country. You really should check out Prophets of Rage. It's the instrumentalists from Rage Against the Machine with Chuck D (Public Enemy) and B-Real (Cypress Hill) on vocals. One of their first releases was a cover of this song. Also, check out Audioslave. That's the Rage instrumentalists with Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) on vocals.

Dude...I love your videos. I'm 41 years old and watching you discover all these bands that I grew up loving is such a nostalgia trip for me. Seeing your jaw drop listening to old school Metallica, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine etc... reminds me of exactly how I felt first hearing them back in the day. What I wouldn't give to hear the Master of Puppets album (or their entire first 4 albums actually) again for the first time. It's a masterpiece from top to bottom. If you feel like hearing a great long Metallica instrumental then check out "To Live is to Die" off of the "...And Justice for All" album. "Orion" off of Puppets is another great instrumental too. Also, That whole first RATM album is f-ing ridiculous too. So good man. My hats off to you.
You are spot on with your breakdown of the song and its meaning, bare in mind this was written 27 years ago but can still be applied to todays climate. Nothing has changed. If anything things are worse. Society as a whole hasnt changed, and with the advent of social media as it is now, news travels as fast as people can type and post, so things tend to blow up hard and fast. Theres a whole lot of people saying " we need to change " but the problem is, theres a lot of talk but not much action. people like to " talk " a lot, but nobodies taking any action, and if they do, its shot down as fast as it can start. Until everyone acts as a whole and stands up to all the corruption and injustice, things will continue along the same path.

There was a massive campaign that got this song to the UKs Xmas No.1 ahead of the X Factor winner, which has been Xmas No.1 almost every year for like a decade. It was fucking everywhere and amazing
Rage Against The Machine - Mic Check, Take The Power Back, Bullet In The Head or Freedom.
and also calm like a bomb, settle for nothing, guerrilla radio...etc
Don't forget Fistful of steel
Testify and wake up are great too
Down rodeo would be good too
And their version of 'Ghost of Tom Joad'
Oh if you only knew how relevant this would be today..
It's has always been relevant.
Holy crap yes!! I was thinking the same thing!
Death - the philosopher!!!! a masterpiece of metal, come on Alex!
If you listen to that song live, the second verse hits you with “Some of those who burn crosses, are the same who hold office.” That line straight up have me chills!
Live Version: "SOME OF THOSE THAT BURN CROSSES, ARE THE SAME THAT HOLD OFFICE!"
I dont believe that you've never heard this song before.
Can you blame him dude? This type of music doesn't exist on mtv anymore. Now it's all about mumble rap and overrated mainstream pop...
I Know this song as been famous for so many years, WTF is Mumble Rap! Rap is mainly crap to me. All sounds very similar!
Music is too compartmentalized now. It's easy to get stuck in a genre and not venture out. RUclips and apps like Spotify will keep directing a listener to more of the same.
yeh its hard to believe.
I feel this way about alot of the reaction songs..... so many video games and commercials use these songs, yet they act like they never turn on any form of media.... maybe they really haven't heard it, and I'm glad this subjects them and so many people to music new to them, but idk that I believe some of these...
Your jaw dropping to Tom Morello is priceless
The fact that this song is even more relevent today just blackens my soul....
Lyrically it is repetative on pourpose they beat you over the head with the same lines which are acting like a blunt instrument....mirroring the horrific beating Rodney King took and musically the aggresive sound of the song (it's not John Lennon Imagine) is also deliberate again mirroring the sickening ferocity with which the cops beat Rodney King...as simple as this song that some people think it is.....it's all deliberate
Bullet in the Head is another greta RATM song you need to react to
Rage against the machine - know your enemy!!
Keep up the good work & keep spreading positive messages, it's appreciated.
it took me nearly 25 years of listening to Rage Against the Machine and paying attention to what is going on in our society to realize that Zack de la Rocha was 100% correct waaaay back in '92. Feels like we should have come farther. I totally agree with you, Tyson.
*Alex:* *"From now on, this is a Rage Against The Machine reaction channel, ONLY"*

I envy you! I wished I could hear "Killing in the Name" again for the first time
You must listen to "Testify" by rage. I'm fine with a rage only channel, I called last time that you'll be stuck on rage haha. The guitar, bass, and drums have a new super group with dudes from public enemy and Cypress hill.
Prophets of Rage
Prophets are bad ass
Ian Muessig Prophets of Rage!

"Such a brilliant so- :O"
OMG, I lost it right there. Yeah, that's a common reaction when hearing Tom's solos for the first time xD
know your enemy-RATM plsssss
Yes! I really want this one. I'd love to see him talk about the song and the fact that it features Maynard James Keenan (since he's talked about Tool). That could be fascinating.
Come on man, do a reaction to some Tenacious D!!
Tribute, Kickapoo or The Metal! To be fair you'll love em all!
Noodle Tribute. Such a brilliant song.
Tribute! All though it's hard to do it justice...since it's just a tribute to the greatest song, and it actually didn't sound anything like that song. It's just a tribute.
This is true. Jack Black is our Comical Metal Legend.
Tribute!!
Kickapoo!!
I listened to this when I was a teenager. RATM is still one of my go to's when I'm just having a moment of being pissed off at everyone and everything. Love them!
Korn - falling away from me
*Wintersun-Sons of winter and stars*
Live in studio version!

And he loves Corey so much so he could listen to Stone Sour's cover as well
cPilot fuck no that stone sour shit is fucking garbage compared to the RATM version
When was this song written ? 30years ago ? I’m sure we can’t have the same issues anymore. Right? Ho wait..

Alien Weaponry Fuck yeah, i would love to see Alex react to Kai Tangata.
It'd be this face the whole time >>> :-O
He's talking about the police and other government officials
Gee thanks. Like we're all dead and can't hear what this guys researched about the song for an hour.
I hope that's not a real picture 🤯
Totally agree. To this day honestly in some ways still has meaning to what's happening today in the present time.
No repetition isnt brilliant its just rapper whos singing 😂😂
Not to be rude Alex but it's about damn time bruh! 😂 Still praying for a return to Machine Head everyday!
Brandon Bartlett The full version of Halo please

React to Rage Against the Machine - Wake Up
We need RAGE back!!! Seen them twice live and they were so damned good!
Tool-Lateralus
Kirk indeed it does :(
Awesome song, except it's over 9 minutes long.
theclayishone eh just means a longer video aha, hectic reacts has done em all including Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoend in one video and that’s like 13-14 mins of music
He needs to watch the video that explains the song
I second this, he needs to react to the song and the video explaining the song in one video 😂 COME ON, ALEX!
Clutch - electric worry!
Took you waaaay to long to listen to RATM, but now i have to spam every video with a clutch recommendation 😁
Also Escape From the Prison Planet
I dig the rockin harmonica!!
Impetus
Hell yes, Clutch is king!
DC sound attack.
Let the rhythm hit em
I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard them. They are by far my favorite band to show people. They’re a band everyone needs to hear.
Inside the Fire or Stricken by Disturbed.
Finally someone wirha a good taste, id add night, parasite, who taught you how to hate, you're mine and prayer
Oh yeah go for Stricken
I have been requesting some more Disturbed reactions off and on for a while to the point I think he really doesn't like Disturbed compared to other bands
Liberate Too
Stricken or Stupefy
When Mr. Morello does his thing, all one can do is behold
there is a whole former youth culture based on this kind of songs. and i was a proud part of it! this band opened up so much! there were no boundaries and they told us!
and it was wild! we just freaked out!
Some more of my favourte RATM songs:
Take the power back
Wake up
Know your enemy
Born of a broken man
How I could just kill a man
Sleep now in the fire
Were you raised Amish? there's no way you haven't heard this song
Songs like this makes me sad for people who are stuck in any genre of music. The emotional power and what’s being said is so much more than the few words. Brilliant music. You feel it.
Steve Vai - For The Love of God live with the Holland Metropole Orchestra
I've been requesting Steve Vai for the last 6 months. Still hasn't happened. Doubt it ever will lol
Metal McFly don’t give up man, the power of good music will win!
Hey!!!Ozzie is too shy!!!
Keep on rocking man!
Whenever possible, give a chance to In Flames. Try "Take this Life", "Cloud Connected", "Dead End" etc.
Cheers!
Saw them live at Voodoo Fest a while back. They turned "Killing in the Name of" into a 15 minute song with about a 5 minute straight solo from Tom...absolutely incredible
Soundgarden - Outshined
I've been commenting that on almost every one of his videos. He'll love that one
wow fuck please let it happen.
Or Jesus Christ Pose/Spoonman/4th of July
Pleaseeeeeeeee Aces high from Iron maideeen😍
For a song with so few lyrics it definitely packs a punch! I love that the music and the energy is more than capable of carrying us through to the end when the few lyrics are so few and repetitive. Great song! 💚💗💚
This song is SO GOOD!. Yes, Rage Against the Machine is and awesome band. Now it's time to do "Wake Up". Another Matrix song that got me started into this Metal music path almost 20 years ago.
I'mma sub to you, I love your logo
LuiCat69 thanks. It’s a tattoo I have.
Oh sweet
Kamelot (anything from Epica or The Black Halo)
Roy Khan has one of the best (male) voices in metal
March of Mephisto and The Haunting
Listen to “Renegades of funk” by RATM covering Afrika Bambaataa
SO good. I love the visual respect "shout outs" in the viseo.
The bassline on Maggie's farm kills all.
Iron Maiden - Paschendale. Do it. Hands down my most favorite song by Iron Maiden.
Truth!
I suggested the song too back on another vid!
Such a powerful song with reference to Wilfred Owen poetry
RATM - Know your enemy
RATM - Vietnow
RATM - Testify
RATM - Take The Power Back
RATM - Freedom
U know it boi
I second Vietnow. Also Guerrilla Radio
RATM - Bulls on Parade.
RATM - bombtrack
Renegades of funk
I just came here to take a peek at his reaction but I can't click away, such an awesome song!
I'm so baffled that there are people out there who haven't heard this. I used to listen to them on the radio all the time growing, and I'm barely 30.
Yea my thoughts exactly lol
I feel so old, I was a teenager with the LA riots, I remember this song....we played it alot around school!
Rage is dope AF, isnt it bro!!!>> RATM is a perfect marriage of hip-hop and metal...if you want to introduce a hip-hop person to rock/metal genre, play some Rage Against The Machine...they are very anti-establishment and I think it definitely bridges the feelings of the hip-hip and metal communities!
Sorry, bro, somehow my notification bell was clicked off and I've been missing your updates!
Greg Potter fuck hip hop tho
There is no comparison from metal to hip hop you twit

"Some of those that run forces (police and military) are the same that burn crosses (white supremacists)."
"And now you do what they told you?"
edit: added military
I'm just mucho happy I'm not the only one that feels so strongly about basically any and all songs from RATM.... I guess we rally around the family with a pocket full of shells. ✊✊✊✊
