Oh boy, today's video is gonna need some explaining. So after the vast majority of you wanted me to install the copy of Server 2003 that Zilch sent me, I came up with an idea to make it more challenging. We're going to install VirtualBox on my Asustor NAS to set up a file server on a file server. Let's see what I get myself into...

It wouldn’t be a classic MJD video without something going wrong.
yes.
It also wouldn't be a classic MJD video without logos flying from the corner :)
@DamnMerasmus it’s not up to you on what I should, or should not put in the comments.
It wouldn’t be a classic MJD video without SEVERAL things going wrong.
nah, def not.
ngl MJDness should be an official term to define something that's stupid in a very cool way
How many subs can I get from this?

@HoloKola how could I tell ppl?

Xzibit meme executed successfully! The legend lives on
Just watched you type that "50" and hit enter, repeatedly chanting "50GB"
waiting for the aftermath, lol
haha
Your hard disk is 50 bits in size. *joking*
A bit of a necropost, but VBox thinks 50 means 50MB
ngl I laughed out loud when you hid the menu bar, and then laughed even harder when you realised that the virtual disk was only 50MB :'D
Edit: Thanks everyone for the thumbs up!
Lol same
Same
The menu bar option is in settings of the vm
I've never done that, why does it assume MB?
As he says on every vid, this is not a MichaelMJD video if there are not any issues between the process lmao
As someone who only uses virtualbox, i can say this video was *interesting*
some shortcuts: CTRL + F is fullscreen
Right Control + Delete for CTRL+ALT+DELETE in VM's
Yessss! Another Michael MJD video!!!
Yes sir
The OOBE of Server 2003 that you mentioned in 22:49 is in fact a fanmade concept. The video of the robots assembling the Windows logo is officially from Microsoft, but the whole OOBE concept was put together by someone else. :D
That was actually a commercial for server 2003 I think.
It's a commercial, not fanmade
@@Bagel_Le_Stinky the commercial is real, the oobe is fanmade.
In the end, you did not only access the file server inside the file server, but you did it from a VM inside instead of the main OS in your main PC. I'm digging the layers!
Oh boy, removing the menu bar of VirtualBox, and then not knowing how to restore it... it's classic, it has happened at me as well.
The robots assembling the Windows Server 2003 logo was an advertisment. Many people actually rip the ending part and claim it was the startup sound for the UK.
Haven't watched the whole video yet but I see you created a 50 mb disk (I'm at 9:04) instead of a 50 GB disk-starting back up to watch the fun-I love that you make mistakes just like the rest of us and overcome them. Makes your videos that much more relatable.
Maybe use the 2003 file server to access different files from the older machines when needed and leave the normal file server for the current machines like your host computer?
i think this maybe the last server OS to still support windows 95 machines sort of speak, but you need the active directory client installed on the windows 95/98 machines, off windows 2000 server. as i pretty sure this wont have the support add on,
8:36 Virtual HDD set to 50 MB (I'm sure you meant GB). I will continue watching to see if you caught this...Yep, at 18:23 you catch it and correct it :)
you 50mb vvirtual hardisk reminds me so much of the first semester... we had our final practical exam in operating systems basics... a girl resized the C drive to 50 mb and not 50 gb... she realised it after 2,5 hours in when she restarted her pc.... i felt really bad for her
lol
my brain went like this when reading the title :buffering: :buffering: :buffering:
Err_404 Not enough ram
that's supposed to be a RUclips emoji I think...

That "is no point" is the very thing that i love to see on this channel :))))(
16:51 The window bar is missing because you don't have any window manager installed on your nas/linux system.
great video btw!
The animation discussed around 23:20 (found here: ruclips.net/video/44WeDtVOrns/видео.html) likely wasn't part of any planned OOBE for Server 2003, but instead seems to be either a fan animation, or something Microsoft made for promotional purposes. This video is also where the "startup sound" that floats around RUclips comes from.
Michael you're an absolute mad lad. This beats your previous video of installing previous Windows versions in each VM's own VM. I love it.
Yay! Another installation video!
Thanks for feeding my hunger for old tech! Now I don't have to go to sleep on an empty stomach.
I actually still actively use Server 2003 for a company-specific internal file sharing thing. It supports the older machines on the (isolated) local network. Good fun to visit these sometimes!
Wow that's cool to hear! just how long have you been file sharing with Server 2003 for?
@@Soulfur When I got my job back in 2013, they told me that its been up since 2007. On my first week i sat down and figured out everything it does because I felt like it'd give me a lot of headaches if I let it be. And boy was I right. I probably should not get into what it does because its identifying info, but loosely speaking it handles the older databases and also lets us easily move files between them as well, among other uses.
@@bluein_ nice! :)
23:32 This is where my old discovery of a glitch to disable Control-Alt-Delete came in really handy decades ago. I made a video showing how it is done. The downside is that the *host* must be no newer than XP or 2003, though.
As a former IT tech, I have hours and hours of screentime on Server 2003 Enterprise and also SBS... great memories!
I especially loved Enterprise Servers. We want it more, but it cost too much. btw, great video MJD. 😇👍🏻
This is the content I sub for
It wouldn't be a Michael MJD video without at least SOMETHING going wrong.
12:00 minutes in and I'm all in right now trying to figure out why it's not working along with you... also, if you need to rerun a command with sudo, you can just type sudo !! to rerun the last command without having to retype the whole thing. Obviously that was a short one, but it comes in handy when working with longer ones.
EDIT: Well I guess I should have just waited a few more seconds until you figured it out, lol
(13:35) I'm very sure it's because their Portal shell is designed for use on a TV. As I suspected, checking their website, some models include a remote control!
(16:50) ASUSTOR forgot to include a window manager that would mimic the look of ADM, which they could possibly do by modifying something like Openbox, IceWM, FVWM, JWM, Blackbox, or Fluxbox.
(20:19) No, that's the TightVNC Client cursor, which can be disabled.
I am glad you show when things during the set up do not go perfect, it helps others if they have problems. By the way another great video, the content is fantastic.
the shortcut for the menu bar is [host]+home
(to clarify it opens a right-click menu that shows the same as the menu bar)
Watch they whole vid he figured it out on his own

Greetings from Peru, I love your videos, specially those about Windows, keep up the great work MJD!
Best moment of my day is to receive a notification from youtube with a MJD new video!!!
i was so happy when you checked that box to finally show that menu bar
I think Micheal has been watching some Druga1 XD we are just missing some SSDs
So funny... But so frustrating xD
I basically screamed host+delete when you were trying to open a session for 5 minutes
There’s something strangely satisfying about network drives lmao why am I like this. Brilliant vid
'MJDness' love that!!! :)
There are vintage computer reasons to do that such as winxp LAN gaming _(because plenty mboards have xp drivers, even an fx8350 capable board or so)_ and then you can deploy (and create) hdd/ssd images to the multiple client machines and in a windows specific way (restore points too etc.). That "specific" set of ways cannot be done without mswindows server (basically 2003). BSD and linux _(albeit more powerful in different ways now),_ for this, is bruteforce workarounds and snapshots etc. as in not the windows way if it is desired (which to some, it is).
I remember ya talking about the win 98 only holding max of 2tb readability, and you could download the larger flashpoint download, the 500 gb one, then copy it three times and see what happens
He does already have a copy of Flashpoint Ultimate sitting on his NAS lol
“Micheal MJD - Just Because” sounds like a killer album!
I don't even know what's going on, I'm just here cuz this dude is hilarious
"Dog two is open!!"
"We are definitely in business!!"
The asustor seems like "a sus tor"
Aww nice, another one of Michael's videos! Time to snack!
Not a MJD video without some MJDNESS
Back in the day, there was a tutorial online on how to turn Win2k3 into a workstation OS. I did it, and it was actually faster and more reliable than XP. That was when I feel in love with Windows 2003. To this day, I look back at that OS with nostalgia. I was mostly did gaming, and everything as far as I can remember ran smooth as butter.
Essentially What was the notions of that tutorial?
MJDness is basically doing things the hard way in a manner where Michael's law would apply- Nothings goes properly the first time.
Just a tip in-case you didn't know. When you forgot to type sudo for a command, you could have just typed !! to run the last command again, but as sudo, instead of retyping it all!
This one of the best tech channels on RUclips
Your menu bar sidequest was so funny I had to watch it twice
I love watching you fail
But even more I love watching you keep going
Also the double file server is a weird flex
Greetings from Romania. Great video :)
Didn't know there are that many romanians on this channel
I saw ~30 times in the comments
Greetings from Romania. :))))
You can show the title bar in the settings screen when the vm is close. Going into the Interface menu there is a check box.
Love your videos 💖✨ I feel like all of us are a family
Loch Ness's time is over, now its time for MJDness
Digging the ominous b roll zooming at the beginning of the vid
I read the title and my brain stopped working for a few seconds. Still a nice video as always.
You’re basically breaking the walls between the NAS and Virtual machine XD
That’s hilarious
make a domain server using the vm and try to login with your old computers
Alternate title: Michael uses Windows Server 2003 Enterprise with a touch of MJDness to make a file server on a Linux-based Virtualbox-supported Asuter NAS
This is oddly satisfying to me
Please make a video about the history of the windows 2000 development
"I don't want to be the first guy to end off a video 'cause I can't figure out how to press Cntl+Alt+Delete"
SMB 1 is good if you have a PlayStation 2 with OPL connected via Ethernet,so you can access your games from there more faster than connecting a Flash Drive in the slower USB ports of the PS2.
FileServer-ception!
I actually managed to install Windows Server 2003 on an AMD EPYC DigitalOcean cloud VM, which was pretty cool. (The question is how much can the poor Windows Firewall take facing the public internet before it gets hacked lol)
Man the menu bar disappearing and not knowing how to get it back. I’ve been there too many times 😂
Great video again. Cool to see old software and os’es again. Why? Just because we can!
The biggest flex is having Server 2003 as your NAS
MJD used to be serious. Now he's :awesome:
You could press ctrl + home to show the title bar as a navigable sub menu style and ctrl + a for the power options and for other shortcuts you can go on the preferences of virtual box
Alternate title: Michael MJD Complains about VirtualBox for 35 minutes straight
My brain is fryed from reading thumbnail and title
This made me go back to the days of being a network admin in school :p it made my head hurt. lol
%username% is something I can barely remember :p
I do mis active directory :) it used to be so awesome... I remember making the start menu disapear for the whole house and everyone think they got hacked (mean I know lol )
1:35 We're gonna MJD this up
Great video Michael, Keep it up!
You can use the terminal to install a Window Manager to get the title bar back.I would suggest OpenBox if you need something that doesn't take up a whole lot of resource while it makes your life a whole lot easier
If you pressed the left ctrl I'd just work, no problem, 50mb, well, yeah.. MJD, I have had a good laugh, thanks! 😅
50mb not even as big as a cd
I hope the NT Installation thing will go on someday
Me with my Proxmox server:
Hmmm, yes. Definitely not the most optimal setup.
Great video
I think first Michael was replacing the NAS's OS itself but this also can be called as "file system server-ception" :D
26:50 MJD click the check mark next to the toolbar
5900 is the default port so just use the ip. And there are shortcuts if its not, :1 for 5901, etc.
Asus nas: o hell no Mjd: windows server 2003 on a nas
Great installation video.
For reference if anyone gets lost here:
Host + Del (Right ctrl + Delete)
To enable the menu bar, go to Settings and click User Interface, and enable the check box next to the right of the menu bar.
This video was amazing

LOVED IT. I don't know weather it's your overall experience or if you are used to using windows Server, but I know if I was doing all that, I would not have patients for it and would be blowing my top big time, so thanks for going through with things and being steady, Hats off to you. I Thank You. 😄😆🥵🧐😊💟💚💙😎
FYI your title bars are missing because there is no window decorator running. A standalone app usually handles that in Linux. It is not VirtualBox's fault.
My guess is the environment was only intended to handle one maximized window at once so whoever authored the NAS software didn't think it was necessary.
Show menu bar has a shortcut key combination, I forget what it is, check the docs...
I cannot wait for windows server 3k3 will come out.
There'll be a Personal Edition, which doesn't mean it's cut down in features vs Bussiness Edition, but instead that you can install it on your own brain. Well, either that or mankind will have gone extinct, who knows.
@@BilisNegra Well with the way the world is going I am sure our existance is wishy-washy.

Yo Dog, I heard you like file servers, so I put a file server on your file server, so you can file serve while you file serve.
God Damnit, beat me to it.
I’ve also had accidentally hid the menu bar in virtual box. I’m extremely surprised that’s even an option
You should have used qemu / kvm with virt Manager or just use the terminal
