5:09 - i wish people can just feel comfortable talking about certain subjects without needing to justify their backgrounds. Like, not everyone who goes through abuse should be forced to say they have and not everyone who hasn’t should feel banned from discussing it.

I wish I could pin this comment in front of everyone's face forever. I have specific circumstances of mental health, disability and trauma. People who have not experienced any of them are more than allowed to talk about them, ask questions, learn how others responded, managed or what they deal with. They're also allowed to make wrong speculations and hopefully listen to those who correct them kindly. If we try to shut people out of a conversation, then we close off various perspectives and inputs, including things people in the box can't see or think of.
Is it sometimes tedious when someone thinks they have a solution that another one who does have the experience already knows doesn't work? Yes, but that's more to education on human psychology lacking than anything else.
And I am absolutely in the camp that feels like I have to preface "I'm x y, z and q" because otherwise what I'm saying isn't valid, will get misconstrued etc. It sucks. It's also exhausting.

I related to Angel Dust for a while, but then I watched Morel Orel and realised how juvenile the portrayal of SA victims is in Hazbin Hotel. It feels a bit like how a teenager would first explore the concept in their work, sensationalising it.

I would love to bring up the musical "SIX" where one of the women, Anna Katherine, sings about her trauma with being groomed by predatory men and her experience with being SA'd and feeling powerless against them. If you know SIX, then you know that this song also is very pop and sassy in its energy! BUUTT the difference on what made "All you wanna do" so impactful and feel like actual representation is the fact that you as the viewer can understand the predatory behavior without it explicitly showing you it happen like a slap on the face like "Poison" did. All you wanna do, makes a viewer uncomfortable in a way where once you re-listen to it again you start noticing how messed up her situation really was. ESPECIALLY when its sung live, you can see her face slowly also realizing what she's been though which ultimately makes her break down in the last chorus.

I'm also a victim of SA. Always been conflicted about Angel Dust's characterization. On one hand, I've met a lot of people who were assaulted who act the same way he does. Hypersexualization is a really common trauma response, hell, I was extremely hypersexual for years starting at a really early age because of the shit I went through. It's disturbing, but it's an unfortunate reality for many people like us. At the same time, the fact that the storyboarder in Poison gets off to Angel Dust/Valentino is... pretty damn sickening, yeah? Can't really look at many of Angel Dust's scenes the same way, just feels like there's this insidious "fetishization" lingering about.

    • @llice1681
      @llice1681 Месяц назад +849

Talking about Poison, if it makes you feel better: just because one person that happens to have very questionable kinks worked on the storyboard, doesn't mean that the whole scene is fetishy. It's one storyboarder in a team full of other storyboarders, which works with other departments and so on. There are a lot of people involved in the making of an animated show and I don't think one's personal taste can influence an entire scene that much, let alone a character's characterization.
That being said: hiring someone with a cnc kink (and who doesn't even bother to hide it) to work for your show with this kind of sensitive subject isn't the best move. I didn't feel like Angel Dust's SA was fetishized and I actually disagree with a lot of what the video is saying, but I agree that this is indeed a very poor decision and I understand why you would feel that way.

Can confirm, becoming hypersexual after sexual abuse does happen.
Tbh, i don't feel like i can even compare it to a trauma. All i knew is that it was wrong but didn't feel hurt. In turn, that made me miss the feelings.... so that's how it can result in HS.

Viv chose to make one of her main characters a victim of assault, and she chose to make put it in a serious light. Then the writers went ahead and chose to JOKE about a man getting raped a few episodes later, which is coincidentally the same episode where Angel’s abuse is brought into light again. You say it’s the audience’s responsibility for what they watch, but shouldn’t it also be the writer’s responsibility to treat sensitive subjects with respect? It’s disingenuous to act like SA is bad one minute, and then next treat it like a joke.

"People suffering doesn't create good people, it just creates suffering." Oh my lord what a line, not to mention that IMO, Angel Dust doesn't really act like a good person for a majority of the show. He sexually harassed multiple male characters but got away with it because they're all men and because it's "funny". It annoyed me so much with the fact that he didn't even apologize, I thought it was going to be then main part of his arc where he realizes that he's coping with his trauma in a harmful way with realizing he's repeating the harmful actions put on himself. But no, he just makes the men around him uncomfortable but they just accept it with no apology even after Husk says "you're always overstepping my boundaries". I'm really glad a lot of people found AD's story relatable and made them feel a little less alone, but from an outside view it is just not a good look for a lot of survivors and viewers who just get really uncomfortable, which is why I feel the extremely graphic imagery in Poison was disgusting. The scene before, after, and during the literal song communicated the themes and messages that anyone could understand already, so there was no reason to flash horrific imagery like that. I've seen so many comments of people, even fans, dropping the show because of how traumatized they were. This was just an extremely unwise decision, especially trying to make a character to represent FOR victims why would anyone even think of showing that when AGAIN there are already all the surrounding scenes for the message? Thank you so much for this video, I felt more comforted than by the story of any HH character and it meant a lot to see someone touching on just how badly handled AD's writing was.

No they don't just accept it as Husk called Angel Dust out and Angel changed and stopped doing it after that episode which is episode 4. Nah from an outside view it is a good look for a lot of survivors and viewers as not everyone is a perfect human being including survivvors and victims really. It was kind of meant to be disturbing though. Eh not everyone understood everything that was really going on though and it was also done to show what Angel's life is really like so no there was reason to flash horrific imagery like that. Nah it was a wise decision there just always should have been a trigger warning disclaimer though. Nah Angel Dust worked out as rep for victims, because again not everyone understood everything that was really going on and it was also done to show what Angel's life is really like.

There’s like three character types in the whole show. With the exception of Alastor cause he’s the most interesting and well thought out character. I think that’s how we got to the bad abuse rep. Because Vivzie is so focused on the concept of these characters being demons in hell, she makes Angel extremely vulgar and sexual, and then plays it off as him being an abuse victim. And I understand that real SA victims can be hyper sexual as a way to cope with the trauma. But Angel feels like a caricature of that. I can bet that most SA victims that use sexuality to cope, still don’t act nearly as sexual as angel. I also don’t believe many pornstars just go around moaning in their day to day lives for no reason. Or harass people by saying nasty shit to them. He constantly disrespects people’s boundaries and flirts even if it’s made obvious it’s not wanted. This gives the impression that the show is saying “yeah, he constantly makes ppl uncomfortable and is a terrible person, but look what happened to him!” Trauma isn’t an excuse to traumatize other people. It’s understandable to lash out, to get defensive, etc. but knowingly making people uncomfortable and sexually harassing them has no excuse to it.
Angel Dust had so much potential but was so horribly written.

Yeah, like I think he's allowed to have that flaw of not respecting others boundaries as long as the narrative treats it like a flaw and he gets actual character development but no one ever calls him out for his behavior and the narrative picks and chooses what type of harassment is funny and what isn't

    • @ghostthelizard

In a vaccuum him harassing others could be a flaw that works, and knowing his backstory we can understand why he does it, it wouldnt be too out of question for an SA victim to do that, especially when they were never taught about boundaries and may deem what happened to them as normal. But its not treated as a flaw that needs correction and hurts others, its more treated as a joke, plus he seems quite aware of what he is doing. He doesnt get told off on his behaviour, which for some characters could be in character, but surely somebody would say something

I feel like Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3 is a much better representation of that mix of characteristics(even tho he's canon bi\pan), than the "gay harasser stereotype tehehe" Angel Dust character will ever be. Astarion's hypersexuality as both a cope and protection mechanism is explored in a much more realistic and 3 dimensional way, even the way he flirts works better.

I'm a survivor of csa myself, but personally, I had a very different interpretation of Angel, Poison and Loser, Baby. (This is purely for the sake of discussion, I'm not trying to invalidate any feelings or say that any one interpretation is correct and admittedly I got carried away because I actually really like analyzing things lol)
Angel's entire character revolves around convincing himself that if he uses his persona and body and becomes what everyone says he is, then he is actually in control of his life and choices so he doesn't feel as helpless as he actually is. Poison is the shiny facade. The fact that it disconnects from the visuals is the point. Angel is telling himself he's addicted to this lifestyle but is telling himself this as he's being r*ped. Believing that it's his fault is an unhealthy coping mechanism. I feel like this is especially clear in the 'yes, Valentino' scene. It's one of the darkest scenes both tonally and visually and is directly connected to Angel having a lack of choice so explicit that there's no way he can spin it into anything else.
The point of Loser, Baby isn't for Husk to tell Angel to 'stop being a whiny baby', it's to extend a hand and provide a support network without completely shattering the illusion of control Angel has built for himself. He's shown that he rebels against gentler forms of encouragement so Husk saying "okay, well even if it is all your fault and you put yourself in this situation, you still have people who care and a network" was a starting point.
Angel has sealed himself off in a bubble of his own design, crafting his personality and actions to be what's expected of him. In this way, you could say he's not ready to truly face reality yet, which is why he can't really be compared to the song from Rent, which is all about someone accepting his mortality and wanting to leave an impact. Angel's just not at the point of acceptance in his development.

Damn, this is how I interpreted it. Sometimes I do believe people need to show some aggressive care(whatever that's called). Because saying things like "you're worthy of love," and all that nice stuff can fall flat for a character like Angel who's stubborn and arrogant.
I can say this because I've noticed this about myself where I'm more inclined to listen and be more grounded when people don't entirely reject the idea that I'm a "bad person." Because I can be a bad person to myself and others, it's not hard to see.
Sometimes people just want support. Someone who'd accept you no matter what you go through and what you do as a result of it. Because the response to the trauma is a part of me now, and I know it's bad. But I want someone to understand, instead of trying to forcefully pull me out of it. And maybe, I can recover in my own pace.
This is what I assume "Loser, Baby" was about. It's the first step of recovery and forgiveness. Accepting the harsh truth and finding a better perspective. Cause being alone and dealing with your trauma, undoubtedly, one of the worst experiences...
Although, Husk's abuse isn't really shown in the show. I guess it has more to do with the feeling that you lack control over your own body and choices. And that's what they both relate to.

As a gay guy who is a victim of SA, I can say without a doubt that how Angel Dust acts outside of "work" is just a front, or a persona, that he uses to not get hurt more. He acts that way because he knows people already look down on him for being in the porn business and being a slut, so the persona he uses is to make it seem like that's all he is as to not get hurt anymore. That's why Husk was able to see through the rouse, and that's also why when Sir Pentious was being praised after the skit, Angel looked so upset and hurt- he genuinely wants to get better, but it's hard to when his soul is owned by one of the worst overlords in hell/his biggest abuser, and with the front he's been using, it keeps those trying to help him at bay and out of reach to actually do anything to save him. I'm not trying to start arguments, but this is just my perspective on the show coupled with my own experience, as I have 100% made a persona similar to help cope with the pain and not be hated for who I actually am, and it took me a few years to break that after I got away from my own abuser. Other people cope differently, but the way that Angel has been is a lot like my own experience with this subject.
Feel free to reply to this with your own take on it as I'm open to seeing new perspectives, I'm not looking for hate or to bring others down, I'm keeping an open mind and encourage anyone who reads this to share their thoughts.

i completely agree with this! angel is putting on a persona like this TO AVOID GETTING HURT. i can assume val only likes angel when he’s acting the way he does. even though he can be aggressive, he is also manipulative. from the voice messages, it’s clear. maybe Angel thinks that’s the only way people will actually like him and get praise from others, because of Val being the way he is. he genuinely wants to get better but i assume he’s been working for val for a while or long enough to forget real and genuine care. the thing is people thing he is instant going to get better. one, no. he’s been like this for years and it will take him a while to adjust to this completely new lifestyle of “being good? Or “being clean” because being all messed up would be encouraged by Val. and two, it’s rushed BECAUSE there are other plot lines and there are only 8 episodes. sorry for the rant but just wanted to get that off my chest anyways. i completely agree! everyone has different ways of coping.

Its just a faux self to stay safe-i think that was relatively a (dare i say good) decent part of what little writing they had. the explanation (to husk) was rather rushed, but what isn’t in life? and being rushed, you could feel he was overwhelmed. and when he broke? felt that too. compared to all the other stereotypes they gave angel, this one was for sure the least damaging (gay/sa survivor rep in media..) it wasn’t perfect, could’ve been wayyy better.. but what’s perfect anyways. sorry for the rant, i just really felt for what you were talking about.

Thank you for mentioning RENT! I’m a CSA survivor myself and I think it is disgusting how it’s handled in Hazbin Hotel. Like, I do believe to SOME extent that the concept of Angel having a soul contract where he can’t consent being a symbolism is a decent representation, but poison absolutely ruins this. I think a better representation of SA is a musical by the name of Spring Awakening. In it, a young girl, Wendla, falls in love with someone by the name of Melchior. The problem is, Wendla has no idea about the concept of sex. Because of this, Melchior goes on to assault her. This is also shown through a song, but the song is low and grimy, it truly shows how horrible this is. Poison is insensitive to the way it shows SA because it uses this super upbeat music during such a cruel situation. Thank you for pointing this out, you deserve so much more credit!

I think the reason Poison is so "upbeat" is because Angel Dust is projecting or faking a lot of positivity for his image. I'd say it's that facade that breaks towards the end of the song and during "loser, baby". His positivity and flirtyness is probably a persona he puts on to deal with his situation and suppress unfavourable emotions. This is something some real people go through too, and so I find discrediting that entirely mildly problematic, though you're still allowed to disagree. I honestly never found the song to be upbeat, moreso an expression of misery badly masked as a dance song, especially with the lyrics. That's sorta the feeling it gives me. I still think they could've executed it better, though. The music _video_ is an absolute atrocity, and there I completely agree that it is just... unnaceptable.

I lost Vizzypop's respect for calling out her attempt to emulate South Park's style by excessively using profanity and sex jokes in a desperate bid to sound humorous.
What's truly sad is that she fails to grasp the concept behind South Park's humor, which, despite its crudeness, often stems from good intentions.
Instead of trying to replicate their style, she could have stuck to her own unique voice and ideas.
By copying South Park's brand of humor, delivery, and disregard for traditional storytelling, she ends up creating disjointed, "do whatever you want" type of episodes that abandon the original narrative, much like the pilots that have been forgotten.

As a victim of SA, seeing people cosplaying and dancing to scenes like poison which depicts rape-genuinely makes me feel sick. It's disheartening how many people fail to grasp the weight of this kind of trauma. It's rare to find shows or movies that portray SA with sensitivity or realism. (Baby Reindeer is one I'd highly recommend.) More often than not, it's downplayed or treated lightly, rather than exploring the true emotional and psychological turmoil survivors endure. We really need to call out not just Hazbin, but other shows and films that are blatantly disrespectful when it comes to handling this subject (GOT, Peaky Blinders, 13 Reasons Why, Blonde, etc.)
Writers should never feel entitled to depict SA so graphically when they havent experienced it themselves. If they had experienced anything like it, they wouldn’t present it so casually or exploitatively. What makes it worse is that many scripts seem to display an unsettling attraction to the opposite sex when writing about SA survivors-this applies to both male and female writers. It’s as if they include SA in their narratives either for shock value, or worse, for some twisted sense of gratification. A character like Angel Dust reeks of this kind of fetishization. I can’t believe how others haven’t noticed how blatant it is.
By far, the biggest issue with how SA is portrayed in media, using Angel Dust as an example, is the tendency to treat it as just a label/character trait. SA is not a personality trait. It's a deeply painful experience that someone is forced to endure, and it comes with lifelong emotional and psychological scars. Many writers seem to lack the empathy or understanding to represent that reality authentically. They treat SA as a plot device, rather than recognizing the very real, complex aftermath it leaves behind.

The thing that makes me mad about Hazbin Hotel is how it paints abuse as something that's just ok and can be used for jokes. Male abuse especially is something we can't joke about. Male abuse and women abuse are equally bad but the one thing about male abuse that's worse than the experience a woman can have is how men can't find help as easily as a woman. From the abuse being played off by others to people just not believing the abused. Both straight and gay men can be sexually abused and I'm tired of media either ignoring the issue, or downplaying it so much it causes my stomach to churn. I have always felt this way about abuse despite never going through it, though I know others that have and even ended themselves over it. I refuse to just let another person be ignored like that. I wasn't enough to help them and when I did report their issues to other people most played it off or told them to man up. Great video. It explains how exactly I feel about angel dust.

i kinda believe angeldust's entire existence is polarizing entirely because there is no 100% perfect way to represent an overwhelmingly large amount of people who experienced the same kind of abuse. some victims think he is perfect representation, while others believe he is the furthest thing from that. there's no easy way to tell that angeldust is or isn't good representation because nobody feels or copes the same way about their abuse and it could probably influence how one thinks of the fourth episode as a whole.
it'd be easier if we all just collectively decided "angeldust writing bad" but it's such a complex issue that we can't really go further than "he's a polarizing character."
sorry, i don't really know how to speak on these things and i may have worded myself poorly here, and i'm not a victim so take everything i say with a mountain of salt.

I’m sorry to those who find Angel Dust and any Vivzie project triggering and upsetting. But as an SA survivor who dealt with it by being hyper sexual, I see myself in Angel and Poison really helps me work through my feelings. As someone who was in a toxic relationship and had trouble coming to terms with what happened to me was SA, seeing it so brutally on display and getting that gut reaction of “that’s not right” helped me. This doesn’t mean your feelings aren’t valid, but maybe this representation just isn’t for you.

I agree with everything, and I would like to add the portrayal of BOTH of the main mlm ships in Helluva Boss (Vivzi's other work) normalizes power imbalance. The person who is objectively more powerful (socially, economically, sometimes physically/materially) is NEVER questioned, in fact they are portrayed as a benefactor or even a victim, their control of the other person is equated to love and romance, and the power imbalance is never acknowledged as a negative thing - outside of angsty emotional climaxes that fix nothing about the inherent problems in the relationship. I have been in abusive relationships and the canonical ships that are portrayed positively in Helluva Boss are MORE realistically abusive than Angel Dust's story.

Thus they aren't aware of the flaws with the show, therefore they get wrapped into it because they see their favorite show talking about something that happened to them. Good or bad presentation be damned.
The unfortunate reality is that the show does attract a lot of minors despite being an adult animated series.
There's a lot of adult fans as well but most times the adult fans for the most part recognize the flaws with the show while still enjoying it to some degree.

  • @YogurtNight_

I’m a gay dude who’s been SAd and I think the framing of Valentino as just a one note caricature of an abuser is so hard to take seriously. Abusers are people with layers other than just “I’m evil”. The layers don’t make them less intimidating it actually makes them more intimidating because when you pick apart how they operate, it shows you why it’s so easy to end up as a victim of someone like this. Griffith in berserk is a sexual abuser but it actually explains how he and the people he’s hurt got to that point. He’s not just an evil entity that popped up one day. He’s not rational whatsoever but there’s an exploration of why this ended up here that’s not just “this is his job and he’s just like that”. I think the fear is that writing him more fleshed out might lead to people accusing the creators of trying to justify his actions but if you can’t write a fleshed out villain because of that then maybe focus on making a deeper exploration of Angel Dust’s journey to this point instead. I know they want to do this probably in the future of the show but you can’t introduce something like this and not expect people to be confused when the extent of the exploration is “you’re a loser, but it’s ok👍”

i kind of feel like i can connect the way angel acts to either hypersexiality to HPD but as someone who does have histrionic pd, i wish they handled it better🙁 i haven't seen a lot of sa rep in media and i kind of prefer that it would be kept that way. everyone's experience is different, everyone copes differently and the way one person copes can be SO different from the way another one does and then when the question of "when will this character get redemption? will they heal?" comes up the fastest and most simple way to round the topic up would be to make a 2nd pov say "trauma makes you stronger".
what hazbin hotel failed to do when trying to expose its viewers to such a topic is to make it seem serious and genuine, which I'm so glad someone finally covered because poison was a painful watch. a good example for a song about sa coming from a victim point of view would probably be 'daddy' by korn especially because of how personal it is for the writer, everything that is written comes from a perspective of someone trying to explain their experience and tell their story, while poison makes it all into a fun and silly music video where in one scene he dances and the other you can see him getting ab*sed.
r@pe and sa in general is a very personal topic, you can explain any crime with self defense, poor home life so you have to steal to survive or crucial situation like speeding to get your pregnant wife to the hospital (for example) but there's no reason for sa to be justified in court, if a person does such a thing its purely because they wanted to. yet it still gets treated poorly by authority and people twisted this term so much to the point that victims had to pray for someone to finally believe them (another example for that would be Timothy Heller) - writing both a victim and a culprit who can perfectly fit into the most basic explanation of sa is very difficult and if done so suggested to have a victim doing so instead of someone like vivziepop trying to represent it.
