@@cosmozapallo4530 no one is the best. I can hear certain patterns that he usually defaults to, just as every guitarist on the planet does. He is a very talented player and willing to do the work that it takes. You can't compare him to other genres that he would suck in if compared to the masters of that type of music.
@@taemian Correction: Paul basically is a guitar god at every guitar genre. He can shred speed alternate picking patterns like nobody else all day, but he can also play the blues with such subtlety and feel or capture ever nuance of Ronnie Dio’s voice with slide picking. He’s a master of just about everything on guitar, he never stops exploring things he hasn’t done before.
When I first started playing guitar and would hang out in the music shop, they had a Paul Gilbert f-hole Ibanez that had so much more tone than the rest of their guitars. I knew about that guitar before I even knew who Paul Gilbert was! lol These guys sound so good. They need to get back together.
This old analog recording seems to have recorded the band very well. If I close my eyes, it's like the 80's again! Gilbert leaves a serious impression every time you see him, there is never doubt who is "boss" on stage no matter the surrounding players.
amazing, I just wish he used a handheld mic because theres just something about a metal singer gripping a microphone like he's trying to choke the life out of it

Paul and Juan are incredible but I'm amazed by the singing! He can just keep screaming. The whole gig is so tight and I'm not a huge metal/thrash fan but these cats are astounding. Gilbert is a monster.
Man how can this band be such undercover .... what did happen ? bass is amazing, vocal is insane ... guitar, well its paul gilbert, its over perfection. the drummer is incredible, we are talking about scott travis who did painkiller and more stuff. its like a super band
Classic PG Tone here with the Laney's. I was at this show and the mix was amazing!!. Paul's tone was huge, after he moved to the Marshalls his tone seemed to get smaller.
Paul Gilbert is the man! Period! You may have had guys that could play as fast or same technique, but they were NOT as good as him! His style and writing ability makes him a master of the instrument! No disrespect meant by this comment. But I have been listening to him for almost 25 years. He is a king of the guitar!
Melvin Watson Jr I met Paul back in 86-87 I believe. I’ve met him many times since but Paul was and IS one thing and that’s a badass guitar player but an even nicer person! He has so much skill and such a great attitude! Love that dude
Jeff Martin sure can wail his lungs out! Great band Racer X was... A superb combination of talented artists with M.I.T. (Musician Institute of Technology) put into 1 brewing pot! Awesome
On the first morning after the day my boy came home from hospital 18 years ago, we watched this DVD together. Today he is 18 and a guitar shredder, thank you Paul.
For those that didn't live in the LA area, you missed out on the greatest time in the 1980's. We were all in bands, we all had fun, and any given night you could see someone like racerx somewhere. It were good times indeed!
Paul Gilbert. What a god of guitar. He got heavy metal out of a Gibson 335. No mess. No fuss. just pure genius, control and perfect technique. I didn't think it possible until I saw this video. Paul could play a car wreck pillar and still get the same music from his instrument. Time to walk into the desert and disappear for all time. :P
Holy F*kballs - this is a great show and yes, Jeff sounded fantastic! I wish they would release more stuff but I was very happy to see them get back together and release Superheroes, Tech. Diff. and Getting Heavier none the less. Racer X rules!
Yeah I had to go check the archives for that one. I didn't know he was a drummer much less that he played with Paul as his drummer, MSG and UFO for a bit. Amazing!
So, apart from (re)learning that Paul Gilbert is a god among mortals, I also learned that if ever there was a Racer X biopic, Michael Cera could play Paul Gilbert.
came here because I got a few thumbnail video refs about Paul Gilbert I got a few Racer X albums in the 1990s after I had began to take attention because of their namesake. I also watched Speed Racer as a kid.
Their cover of Godzilla is probably one of the best covers of all time. Genuinely stands out on it's own just from a shredding point of view (thank you Paul Gilbert for your absolutely EXCELLENT guitar skills) on top of the fact that there's such consistent drumming from Scott and skillful vocals from Jeff.
Had never heard of these guys until I found this video today. What an incredibly technical band the lot of them. Paul obviously leading with this ungodly shredding that’s so crisp, but the bassist can stay right there with him through so much of it’s really impressive. The drummer and the singer are constantly on point the whole time as well; what an impressive show!
This concert, with headphones just sucks you in. Jeff is just incredible!! What a voice!!! 4 virtuosos on one stage. I wish I had a chance to see them live 🙁
Wow, what a change from the days of hair spray and neon guitars. I was not expecting Paul to come out with a semi-hollow body. I played one recently though and I can't say I blame him, the neck rules!
I agree completely. Paul is one of THE best personalities in the biz & an excellent teacher. Met him a few times as well at clinics & back in the early Mr Big days and he is one of the friendliest "guitar heroes" you'll ever come across. All you have to do is watch a few of his instructional vids, to realize that he does this because music is FUN. Not to feed his ego or anything shallow like that. Humor, Technique & Passion for playing music...the "Trifecta of Non-Toolness". LOL
it mainly comes down to who you know, can you write songs and your professional personality. Sure there were lots of guys just as good as Paul in those days (I had one in my band in the late 80's) but if you don't have the other elements all in a row - contacts, songs and image - you ain't worth spit. Paul was well known in Hollywood before Racer X from his days at GIT and knowing Mike Varney. That, plus his inventiveness on the guitar and personality helped him go far.
And I'm going to bet that much of his melodic sensibilities in songwriting came directly from covering Michael Schenker's UFO songs back in the day. And then he went on to combine it with Malmsteen's speed.
This band is so energetic, it always cheers me up to listen this concert. Paul Gilbert is the best virtuous guitar player, because he knows the purpose of his craft: To make awesome music, and not the other way around!
Anyone else here because they wanted to find the Paul Gilbert live performance DVD that came with the Ibanez Gio 25 years ago? That guitar, Paul's instructional dvd and Racer X live set is a great memory for me.
Paul Gilbert is a bad ass never ending riffs harmonics killer arpeggios ruthless attacks with his virtuoso self always appreciated anything music he had to offer
I was at the Whiskey that night. It was great to see the reunion show. I even saw them at Reseda Country Club when they recorded the Extreme Volume albums. Going to see Paul at HOB in January 2013! Paul shreds.
I've been looking for this for many years. I was sure I'd seen a video of Paul playing Racer X songs on a semi-hollow guitar, but I couldn't find it. I thought I was crazy. Thanks!

Racer X.... what a fucking great great band.
No more comments.
Racer X is like Judas Priest but with 25 guitar players instead of just two

Back when his hearing was still decent enough to recognize a good guitar sound, and before meeting corny Satriani.
