I was at the Gazzaris guitar contest that night in 1985. Nobody knew who Paul Gilbert was but he blew everyone away. All the other players were in full 80’s hair metal regalia but PG walked out there is jeans and a tshirt and slayed them all.
What guitar is he playing?
@@vintagetubeamplifiers Gibson Melody Maker, dual cutaway.
@Trev0r98 nope. it’s an epiphone wiltshire style that he modded with a kahler tremolo. pretty sure it’s the one Wayne Charvel built for Paul that’s based off the wilshire body shape
Hmm, I don’t seem to remember it that way, the guy who came in second place was wearing pretty normal stuff for 1985, and people knew who he was, more than half the audience were MI students, so his reputation preceded him.
I have the entire video btw
80s man🤘
Especially mid 80s, yngwie came out, vinnie moore, paul gilbert and bruce, tony mclpyne, greg howe, frank gambale, so many great guitar players around that time, these really were the good old days!
I like your comment, I just wanted to make a correction on Tony MacAlpine's name in case anyone looks him up. Cheers!
I was there in 85' GIT, remember Juan and Paul in a classroom going over a song, I opened the door, said, "Can I hang out"...they said sure!!
Went back in 87' ...had Paul as a private teacher every week....timing was more than EPIC...Danny Gill, Nick Nolan, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale....so many to absorb from...blessed with memories.🔥🎸
Wow damn ur lucky 🤘 I wasn't born exactly yet 😅 From your recollection, What was one of the biggest sticking points that Paul may have stressed regarding picking fast and accurate?
@@herehere3139 "play slow and accurate then build up your speed" showed me the infamous DiMeola lick and I was off to the races 🤣 and yes...grateful to be their when this was all going down. I remember hearing "Lay It Down" walking down the sidewalk of Hollywood blvd as speakers were pumping that song at the front of a ROCK Shop that sold real photos of Randy Rhoads live behind a glass...Jake...WASP CRUE DeMar as Invasion Of Your Privacy was just released!!! Killer memories!!
@@herehere3139 ruclips.net/user/shortsh5j_yvB9tFo?si=lkDtQiEmvU7s-oYu all these years later...still LOVE 🎸 Guitar 🔥
@@RikkShredLifestyle hoooolllyyy shiiiiiiii Hahaha That's as good as it can get 🤘 Wicked cool thanks for the reply. Now I'm gonna have lay it down stuck in my head, but that's a good thing 😅 I've had cat scratch fever stuck in my head all morning so played the riff on guitar a bit, which my 7 year old son (who loves music like I do and he plays drums) was like "don't start singing it.." 😆
@@herehere3139 you and your son enjoy brother!! ROCK together ❤️ make great memories!!
Paul is absolutely physically gifted to play guitar. Also he worked his butt off
Legendary band. Especially when Bruce was still on the second guitar. Shred duo that is unmatched to this day
The beginning of this band sounds better than most established bands
Yeah cause Paul and the bass player went to MIT do they knew their stuff...
100% Funny how that works huh?
I met them a number of times in those days. I was a shredder in the L.A. scene in the 80s. Saw the live a bunch of times. Amazing band, far better than Mr. Big. When Paul left to join Mr. Big at Billy Sheehan's urging Racer X was done. I jammed with Jeff Martin when he went back to drums. He's as good a drummer as Travis. Seriously. He joined Badlands shortly after.
@@angusorvid8840 I would even argue that Jeff is a more versatile and complete drummer than Travis.
Even in Badlands i liked his stuff better than Eric Singer.
And Racer X over Mr Big any day. At least Paul came back with RX and gave us awesome records again. Nothing against Mr Big, super tight and phenomenal musicians, but something was missing for me.
Never a fan of shredding but agree with your comment
This footage is fantastic - what a treasure for Racer X fans.
It’s pretty cool if you don”t much about Paul’s days with Racer X too!
I've been waiting 35 years for this video. I've always been a super Racer X freak.
Your Not Alone !!
@@lancerx1759 Indeed! Count me in as well!
Love all these guys! Amazing how great they were at such an early age.
It's lucky that you were able to hold onto those recordings and that they survived for a such long time. This is such a cool piece of history, thanks Harry
NOVAK !!! Acid Wire here. Nice to catch you !
@@KingGrio I guess we're both still around! ^^
Harry…I could write endless paragraphs here about how Racer X has inspired my own playing and life direction, so instead I will just say THANK YOU SIR!!! Been in a rut lately, life gets unruly sometimes, woke up this morning a little down until I played this video that popped up, reminded me of what’s important and to not ever give up!!! 👏🎶🔥🎸💯
GREAT Video!! Paul is a legend,
Harry is a beast on drums!
Very impressive, powerhouse drummer. 🥁 👏
Brings back the good old days seeing them at the country club. Couldn't hear for a week after.
The first time I heard Racer X was from one of those plastic 45 records that was included in one of the guitar magazines. I was hooked from the first moment! I think I still have that record somewhere.
Same exact story for me. I had been playing for years. That square plastic record changed my life.
I'll give you $2000 for it
I’ll give $2001.99
Thanks for posting this Harry. I've been a big fan. I was a studio engineer at Magic Traxx studio in Virginia Beach Va. back in the mid-eighties. I recorded a demo tape for Scott Travis back then when he was getting ready to go to L.A. You two are both incredible players and Racer X did not get the recognition you all deserved. \mXm/
Bands wish they could sound this good live.
wow that drummer was pretty thight never heard of this guy awsome, crazy how good these guys where and sounded at that early age
He is the chosen one.
This is great to hear - thanks from the bottom of my heart for posting!
Whoa. EPIC upload! Have never seen/heard any of this footage. Thanks so much for sharing this!
I still have the street lethal cassette tape. Crap I'm old! Paul Gilbert is the human jukebox! If he can think it, he can play it. One of my overall favorite guitarists!
Splendid! Thank you for that!
Awesome 👍!! Thx for posting!
Awesome video! Thank you much for posting it.
Incredible material. Thanks so much
Thanks for sharing these clips Harry. Super awesome \m/
I really miss those indelible and moving moments. Thank you very much for all
Thank you for this great historical account!
Those couple of songs after the 15 minute mark are amazing!
Never heard them, before.
Thanks for posting this. ❤️
And Jeff Martin goes onto play drums with one of my fave bands ever ! All had depth as brilliant musicians in their own right🙏 and Bruces Scream albums-killer! But Paul’s prodigious playing set the guitar world on fire - he took Malmsteen to another level , Paul is and Eddie in his own league, just a true master musician 👌 he’s technical abilities had more influence and copycats in the next decade and to this day YJM ..Max Ostro .Racerx has been the standard till now.as Jeff said at one of their gigs “the best in the west and best from the rest!”
Thank you for sharing, much appreciated :)
Thanks Harry! This is a beasty tape! Y'all were untouchable from Day One!
This is absolutely beautiful!!!! Thank you for sharing !!!
Been a fan since the beginning. My best friend went to GIT in 1989 and I heard all the stories from the Golden Era of MI. Thanks for uploading this, it’s incredible
Thanks for uploading Harry. I’m a big fan of Racer X so this was really interesting to see👍
Very very cool! Thanks for the upload, Harry. btw, you’re one hell of a drummer 😎
Awesome! Thank you.
“ Street Lethal “ - is one great album, cassette, CD 🔥
Yup got both Racer X on cassette, back during the Shrapnel days, shred was king

This is AWSOME!!! Thanks HARRY your drumming really made the first album The Best Really like your style sound tuning etc.
I had Racer X on Vinyl, that’s how far we are going back.
Crazy how fast time rolls. I was GIT with Paul 84/85. He had that crazy bowl haircut at the time lol. He'd practice in the window room right across from my closet lab.
Thanks for Sharing HG !!
My friend Steve Evans told me back in the day one his former bass students was playing with this kid Paul Gilbert...saw them at the Stone SF a couple of times...Shred City 🤘
Great stuff, I can't thank you enough. History. What a great band.
Hey hey 👋 😄
Thanks so much....
Awesome, been a fan since I heard Street Lethal way too many years ago. Great job Harry
I’ll bet back in the day these guys walked into a club to play and everyone thought “who are these dorks?” Then they played and minds were blown.
Really great to hear this!
Awesome stuff.........
Thankyou . Respect
Yeah I was there too. In The beginning. Around MI. JUST after Street Lethal was released.
Thanks for the post! Michael T Wyman. 2022. L.A. jam night guitarist. 2013-2019.
Very very very cool,Harry !
I love RX since 1989
Amazing! Starting at 19:22! Mind blown! Listen 👂 on repeat this amazing riff!
Thanks!
Great drumming Harry. I was at MI during those days. It was magic...
Jeff Martin played me this cassette demo at an Arizona club called rockers. My guitar player at the time, David Janssen and I were blown away. Jeff dropped surgical steel like a bad habit and joined racer x.
Cool stuff, Harry! 2:45 I can see that you also went to see the "Straight Between The Eyes"-Tour -82. ;-) 15:11 guaranteed filmed from the Holiday Inn, facing Yucca. Man, I miss my time at M.I.. Can you recall Donut Stop there on Highland? Cheers, and Thank you for the very cool footage! /Peter from Scandinavia
Sounds awesome
This is awesome
That 1985 Gazzari's may be Paul's fastest, most-accurate ever. Seriously.
Right...
Amazing
Love the Toronto Maple Leaf hat.👍
That was back when Paul had that reverse 45 degree with his thumb.
Always heard about the guitar wars win! Some lucky people here who got to be in MI or around that scene at the time!
Kickass!
Very cool!
I too made records at Prairie Sun studios. Mooka rocks!
Ive also worked with Steve Fontano, the engineer who recorded Racer X's first few records.
The similarity ends there.
I love the tune beginning at the 15:25 mark.
The guitar and the drums locked in, such a badass riff.
Yeah, what is that song caled? Isn't it some cover? I never heard it before.
Nice. I'll share this with Doug Morrison today. He'll get a kick out of it. ,Austin Tx
Thanks for uploading. So awesome to see this. Is the footage of the city taken at the time (1985) or is more recent? If taken at the time, why no footage of the band playing? Would’ve been awesome to see the band playing together on film. This is so sick though and I’m so appreciative for it.
Awesome to hear - not sure if it’s here but how come you aren’t able to continue on? Ever think of or try to get a jam with them in years passed?
Hope Juan's recovery still going well..
Thought we were going to lose him. Can't keep a good man down.
His wife posts regular updates. He’s kicking ass and is back to picking up his bass
I love Racer
And before he changed his right hand technique. He's still playing with the pick slanted backwards in the Gazari's video.
And three finger pick-grip alla Morse
Jeff Martin was a beast of a vocalist. Anyone know why Surgical Steel fell apart? They were amazing.
Bruce was a great addition to the band . He didnt sound like Paul so you could always tell who was soloing .
He sounded almost exactly like Paul lol.
@@Fearzero Which one string skipped and which one sweep picked ?
@@RobertSmith-lg7jp They both did both. I've transcribed a ton of it. Paul definitely does more string skipping though.
Props to Bruce for matching ferocious Paul's guitar playing. Don't know if there were many able to do it back then.
I knew this band was named after the character from Speed Racer.
Hope Juan is doing fine.
Juan is kicking ass with the Mars Volta!
@@tedcabana sadly This is not the case. Juan suffered a TBI in Jan 2020 while riding his bike in LA. He is kicking ass in recovery though!
@@SeanPierceJohnson I wish him the best.
13:16 Dat bass solo, wow!!
Love YRO !
Paul looked like a young Pete Willis!! 😛
OMG !!!!!!
nice yamaha recording custom there in that black and white photo
Gila msh muda udh sangar aja nih si paul maen nya.keren keren 👏👏👍
Thats it! I'm selling my guitar, many guitarist said after seeing Paul.
Not Brian Carroll though...man swear 2 this day the early shred PG-13 eras is like Buckethead without a mask!
❤️
Harry was a badass drummer. I always thought it was Scott Travis the whole time. Juan, I loved you and Bruce in The Scream too bro. I wore out 3 or 4 of those cassettes of your first album.
Me 2. Always thought it was Scott Travis wanted 2 do side project outside of Judas Priest n thus he had been a founding father of this band(after all who else can say they played with two of the greatest Lead Guitar combos of all time with Racer X N Judas Priest?) Wonder would they been as cult faves had they never got Scott Travis N esp Bruce Boillet?
@@265308I might be misunderstanding your comment, but are you saying you thought Scott Travis was in Judas Priest before Racer X and that he played in Racer X as a side project in the 1980’s while also in Judas Priest? If so that is incorrect. Scott’s first album with Priest was Painkiller, which was released in 1990. He replaced Dave Holland who played with Priest from 1979 - 1989. So he was definitely in Racer X before joining Judas Priest.
@@gtdrummer6429 OH ok now makes a Lil sense..yeah thought Travis was in Priest first.....he always kinda looked out of place in Racer X bc of age difference kinda like Mick Mars in Motley Crue. Thx 4 info. WISH PG-13 n Boillet make a Racer X reunion.
Some players like Mike Batio, have figured out alternate picking direction changes that work well and keep velocity going on guitar.
After studying Paul's videos for a while, i have found playing sequences that are very fast, which are are actually hard to play on guitar.
Paul is a freak to me for that reason .
Paul's own interpretation of Fast Guitar Riffing, may be natural to him
But it does not follow the easier route to the logistics of guitar as an instrument
He makes it work
@@silverpairaducks the video instruction after "Intense Rock"
Showed some things that were Musicianship Skills that are really useable, like tapping out phrases like a drummer, and approaching lead guitar with rhythm .
Also in the realm of technique, the terminology, " inside picking", and "outside picking" were something Paul emphasized.
@@johnmcminn9455 I mentioned intense rock in another comment. My ex wife hated his stupid guitar trix...probably because I edited them together
@@silverpairaducks your right ! After sitting down with the tab to Street Lethal and working out the riffs slow, i can see how the velocity builds .
Pauls' use of hammers and pulls in combination with picking build some really great sequences
I do the main sequence in the bridge
(B string) 14 15 17( E string)14
17 15 14
14 15 17 slide with pinky 19
(E string) 16 17 19 17 16 slide with index 14
(B string ) 17 15 14
Every note picked but with 4 notes on a string like shawn lane or John McLaughlin
And segovia actually played 4 notes per string , but it helps to use tall frets
It really works well with even numbers of notes
My first guitar teacher Kevin Gallagher who is a You Tube Classical Channel was playing Randy Rhoades with 4 note per string sequencing which is where i got the idea
19:24 what song are they jammin on there?
Thought that was Jeff Watson from Night Ranger at 00:40 . LOL
Note right hand wrist position he kept at beginning then changed in the later years
MOAR! WE NEED MOOAARRRR!!!! Freaking awesome stuff! Thanks so much for sharing this! That riff starting at ruclips.net/video/KNKmLrBaYl0/видео.html is amazing! Never heard that before though.
I wish there was a racer x street legal full demo tape
👌🏻🤘🏻
What is the second song on this video?
Harry’s playing reminds me of Tommy Aldridge.
9;19 is very similar to VH light up the sky..
Whoa! What is that song at 11:20?!??!?!?!?
What paul is playing some REH licks from Greg Howe haha nice
What is the song that begins at 19:20
