Agreed 💯!! Still my favorite after all these years. The more I see people like Brad and Lex discovering their music the more I feel like I've taken them for granted. Their music has always been there for me and I honestly can't imagine hearing it for the first time again.
No one else comes close. Don Cherry supposedly once said if Martians landed and said, "Show me a hockey player, I'd show them Cam Neely." If they landed and asked _me_ to show them the quintessential rock band, I'd show them Led Zeppelin.
@Brett Kenschaft absolutely know what you mean. I haven't always loved them and seemed to have appreciate them. However, since watching reactions I see that because I grew up with them playing in the background of my youth I didn't realize their mind blowing greatness.
I cant really appreciate them enough i allways want to express it even more and more ..i allways do it best by listening to them full hearted and saying THANK YOU GOD FOR THIS BRILLIANT BAND
I think the best time to be born for the greatest music was between 1950 and 1965. I was born in 64 and I have three older brothers and two older sisters. I got the benefit of all the Motown and all the greatest rock ‘n’ roll. I know as a baby when my sisters would be watching me they would be listening to all the old Motown songs because I remember them.
This song was originally designed as an instrumental prelude to The Rain Song....Robert decided to write lyrics for it, and it became a stand alone song. Even so, it was usually played before The Rain Song live in concert.
Legend goes that this song started out as a two minute intro to the Rain Song but morphed into its own musical piece. They just felt something and went for it. It was pretty organic and spontaneous compared to most other song writing approaches. The song does precede the rain song on the album and still sort of serves as an intro to it.
Everytime I hear classic Rock or old school party music ,I always see something from my past, like tripping balls, watching this Movie of the same name with our extremely large speakers hooked up to our vhs and television and just letting the music take you somewhere else, said speakers turned up to 11
The entire track was VariSpeeded up a quarter tone to make it sparkle more. The opposite was done on No Quarter, whereas it was VariSpeeded down a quarter tone to make it sound darker. This is really the only album they used the VariSpeed knob on.

I first heard this more than 30 years ago and I'm still very impressed when I hear it today. Everyone involved in this from the musicians themselves to the sound technicians was absolutely at the top of their game. People (maybe cyber-people) will still be playing led Zeppelin tracks a thousand years from now in some sort of spaceship floating around in outer space.
The best way to listen to LED Zeppelin is listen to the hole album çause back in the 70's they produced albums that had songs that would connect ànd in a order that all fit together so you could sit back and listen to the whole album çause back in the 70’s the album was your playlist
Part of what made Led Zeppelin sooo amazing was their contract with expressed freedom of creation. They were primarily an improv band, no 2 concerts were the same. The music evolved with the band 😈🤘
Saw them first 73 when this lp was released after much anticipation they totally exceeded my expectation!!! If you listen to nick drakes cello song, the beginning to me is an acoustic version, I know how much robert loves nick, pagey totally layered it masterfully, never thought they could pull it off live, they did 73 to 79..ty 4 giving it a listen..this is one of my fav zeppelin songs, esp live, opening with it in their later tours, was so powerful, love how rob sped up the vocals,
@@James_Loveless How cool! My friends and I got pulled into a room and searched after they saw us lighting up a pipe and smelling the skunky goodness! Saw laser Floyd there countless times too.
Time has been kind to this album, whose main problem when it arrived in 1973 is we had been waiting for the follow up to their perfect 4th album and everyone was a little disappointed at first but you soon realized these guys were not going to repeat themselves and came up with another great album in its own right. Try the Ocean either from it or Live, it is another banger from the masters of rock. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
The vocals are so high pitched because they actually sped the recording up. These are the guys, it’s just it. No one at the time or even today layers guitars in the way Page did. Bonham, Jones and Plant…everyone in that band were incredible innovators with incredible ears and their influence on every band in the rock realm and even beyond is incalculable. Thanks for reviewing all these special random songs, you guys rock.
The lyrics are based on Robert Plant's belief that music is universal. He told NME in 1973: "Every time I sing that, I just picture the fact that I've been round and round the world, and at the root of it all there's a common denominator for everybody. The common denominator is what makes it good or bad, whether it's a Led Zeppelin or an Alice Cooper."
Reading the comments here make me realize, there are so many led zep experts... Ya'll know so much and I learn a lot. For me, they tickle my ears like no one else!
At the time this song was recorded a company called Roland took an effect called "chorus" and created a version that was used in many recordings like this. It's what you hear bending the pitch on Robert Plant's vocals and giving it a bit of that "swisshy" sound. On top of that, as mentioned earlier by Kitchener, they used VeriSpeed to change the speed of the recording giving it more brightness. Probably one of their best albums ever and you just can't go wrong with Led Zeppelin. They were always at the top of their game.
Back in the day, in 1975, I was a senior in high school. Bought an old gas company van, painted it before the Bondo was dry. Had an 8 track and a pair of Jensen triaxle speakers and a 20 watt per channel booster. Pulled out of the high school parking lot, fired up a doobie, put Houses of the Holy into the player, and jammed all the way across town to my job flipping hot dogs at Coney Island. I really miss those care free days.
"Diverse" is a perfect word......like Led Zeppelin, themselves....very diverse! Now...see/hear the live version from the album/concert film of the same name!
Fun fact. The art on the album cover was photographed on the North coast of N.Ireland called The Giants Causeway. I live in Belfast and often travel to the area. Zeppelin are one of my favourite bands. ❤
I know a lot of people was not favorite album. But is one of mine. I felt it had so much different sound. Love it. Hope your are feeling well lex can't wait to see your baby.
This was from the first Zep album I ever bought on cassette tape when I was in high school. Not my fave… but a great album and diff sound from their previous work that I had heard. 👍
What a killer opening track. Zeppelin had the best opening tracks of any band. House Of the Holy is a masterpiece. Such a bright fun Zeppelin album!! Could be their best, but who knows….. they had 8 incredible albums that could be anyone’s favourite at anytime. ✌️❤️
Page and JPJ were wizards in the studio… as the technology advanced, they used found and used it all… The crazy dream was Led Zeppelin and no matter where they perform, California, Calcutta, Honolulu.. the song remains the same…
Jimmy used an electric 12-string guitar on this track. This gives its signature ring-y sound and tone. The origins behind this song is that there’s a common denominator in the world - in that it’s peoples are the same no matter where you go. They traveled a lot in the early seventies and their experiences led them to believe just that: after the initial confrontation of wanting to hang out and experience a differing culture and the walls are let down and you’re invited in, Robert and Jimmy found that the other side ends up enjoying much the same things in life as you do. Peace, prosperity, family first and good food/drink and MUSIC.

I saw Dread Zeppelin, with big ol' Tort Elvis, on a night I could have seen Phish in a small club. Oops. And I think the song title is Heartbreaker Hotel, as a riff on Elvis's Heartbreak Hotel and LZ's Heartbreaker. But the Dread is a fun watch, one time.
Bob --- Dread Zeppelin is, or was a phenominal band. I've seen them play live four different times and each time a slightly new line up. They went through a couple of drummers and other members throughout the years. A couple that stood out were, obviously Tortelvis and his stagehand Charlie Haas, Charlie gave Tortelvis clean dry towels and his cape ( Ala Elvis and James Brown) and he would help Tortelvis get untangled from his microphone cord. There was drummer Fresh Cheese n Cheese, Bass player Jah Paul Jones, to name a couple. I have two of their CDs. Always fun listening and to have people who have never heard them but who are Zeppelin, Elvis, fans plus Reggae fans.
Pagey was so good at making a Telecaster _not_ sound like a typical Telecaster, such as this track and on their first album (throw the studio Stairway solo in, too). When I think of a classic Tele sound, I think of someone such as the amazing Don Rich. Or in a rock setting, the sounds that the early Black Crowes got out of a Telecaster. With Jimmy, it always sounded dramatically different.
You must and I really do insist, watch the live version along with The Rain Song back to back from the movie The Song Remains the Same. It will be the best 20 minutes of your life. Well musically anyhow.
Houses of the holy in it's entirety is one of the true masterpieces of rock.
Absolutely!
Of music in general, not just rock
This was the first piece of music I bought with my own money when I was a teenager. I bought the cassette at K-Mart
One of those rare albums where every song can stand on its own...
It wasn't Rick it was a mix of many genres. Still a masterpiece though
It is about the band travelling the world and discovering that people are the same everywhere
"the song remains the same, it's f-ing true" -from the film
Yes, and doesn't the song sound as if they are traveling around the world on a humanistic adventure?
The live version from 1973 at Madison Square Garden, and used in the movie of the sane name, is mind blowing.

Notable is that a lot of that song is on the 12 string neck. Plus don't stop there, go directly into The Rain Song!

I only know 1 band who easily pulled this off. Sadly we just lost the guitarist on the 2nd
Those drums on the version from TSRTS...sweet Jesus!
I used to do it...and the live version. Which was always my favorite!
Only the dedicated touring cover bands do it and they use 2 guitarists, at least
I love this song's vibe so much, it is so diverse in structure, it is a great intro song and sounds like the soundtrack to an epic movie or rock opera
