  • Just imagine being a 19 year old kid & winning your first Bassmaster Elite Series tournament in only your second event. Well, Trey McKinney did just that on Lake Fork this past weekend. He became the youngest Elite Series champion & took over the co-lead in Bassmaster Angler of the Year & Rookie of the Year race along with Ben Milliken. Now he joins the podcast to talk about it.
But that’s not all. Jake’s Take - the ultimate behind-the-scenes Bassmaster segment with Bassmaster videographer Jake Latendresse returns & we talk about everything that happened both on and off the water at the Toledo Bend & Lake Fork tournaments. Including never before revealed info from the back deck of Kyoya Fujita , Lee Livesay, Takumi Ito, Kyle Welcher & Ben Milliken’s boat.

Hell yeah and they seemed to speak open and honest like they would sitting around the camp fire and drinking a beer after a long day on the water….it was cool to peak into what it would be like to be a pro and be a fly on the wall while 2 legends tell stories and chop it up

I’ve been following Ben sense he was working a 9-5, sometimes says some things people don’t want to hear but he sticks to his guns and he is real and keeps it 💯. Dude can fish and am so freaking proud of him and it’s so cool to watch him make 2 top 10s in a row and this guys time has come and he has put in the work the last 10 years with RUclips and a lifetime of loving the sport of fishing….just really refreshing to see a real one make it to this level and if anyone deserves it it him. I put him up there with Polinec and Carl and Lee and swindle….he is funny and real and I think Mercer called it he is the Next Big Thing!! He is here to stay

I spent a day in Trey’s boat at Toledo…his energy is infectious and he is very mature and creative for his age. Yup…when I was with Kyoya at Lake Fork…we were launching when you initiated the invocation. But the main event happened about an hour later…lol. A lot of great reasons for people to marshal.

As you probably don’t remember from my commenting history - the world revolves around Wheeler in fishing for me.
Trey is an angler I’ve known about for a long time now. But this kid is the second coming of Wheeler for me. He’s really good. Way different personality and that’s fine. But a very similar approach, passion and ability.

Dave, this was a kick butt episode. Really good and fun stuff here. What an epic start to this season.
A side note to you and BASS: bass fishing was a childhood and teenager past time for me growing up in San Diego. I’m now 44 and fished a few times here and there since I was a teen. Until 4 years ago when I dove right back into it. Gear, boat, scope and all. I’m here to stay now 😂. But I wanted to mention that I never really followed or knew anything about the tournament seen. But Matty Wong and Ben Milliken brought me to BASS. Now I’m following on the daily. And now that I’m following, I’m seeing more and more guys that I’m rooting for. It’s a blast seeing the new youth making waves. And I’m pro scope for the tournament seen 😂.

Rigging up the kayak for the season opener comingup Saturday. Now I've got Jake to listen to. Hell yeah! I'm with you guys on FFS. I go back and forth and see both sides. Just like with politics, I disagree with people who have extreme/dishonest takes on things. If I was Bassmaster, I would do at least 3 or 4 events a year without FFS. Edit: Yes, freeze the scales, and the kids are alright.

My brother in law had a great idea I believe on limitations. We limit the amount of batteries one angler can have on their boat, and whatever they decide to use those batteries for is up to them. Want all the graphs? Okay you have to run a 12v tolling motor. Want a 36v trolling motor, okay then run one graph. The angler can decide how to use their power source

    • @factsoffishing

The same anglers that I grew up learning from and listening to them tell me to stay on top of the latest baits, trends and technology are the same anglers that are now bashing the latest baits, trends and technology. Is it because they are older and can't or choose not to learn and understand and are scared of being replaced?....maybe. All pro athletes get replaced with younger and harder working pros. We live in a world of technology. If bass bans it and doesn't adapt, the sport will die. Young anglers won't continue to come into the sport. The money is not there to draw them like other pro sports. Therefore, the sport needs the technology.

Actually viewership is not and I don’t see it getting any better , I guess that’s why they need a commercial every 5 minutes from Garmin or Humminbird . Bass is heading in the direction of the WNBA where nobody but a select few true diehard fans watch . And none of the guys have the balls to stand up and say how they really feel , can’t bite the hand that feeds you . ( not very well I might add ) . Invest 150 K on equipment at the chance to earn minimum wage 👍👍👍makes sense to me

Great podcast again Dave. It's funny to see how much FFS makes its way into any fisherman's conversations at some point. It's literally exhausting. That being said it is absolutely amazing technology and friggin' wild to watch. I'm actually babysitting my nephews livescope at the moment. Had it out a couple weeks ago fishing crappies on Lake Nipissing. Did great so decided to get back at it last weekend and figured the hell with the livescope. A real pain to haul that heavy thing around in a sleigh and just used the traditional flasher. That was tough. Still did great but felt like I had stepped back in time 10 years. 😂

It’s hilarious that the “veterans”, especially the ones that quite literally abandoned bass to rot and went to Boyd’s league, have now came back and are being so outspoken about the new ways the guys are kicking their ass. It’s quite hilarious. “Traditional” bass fishing lol. Maybe if they got off their asses in the off season and worked to get better instead of setting on their ivory tower all winter and assumed they are entitled good finishes they wouldn’t have to bitch about it from the booth on Saturday and Sunday. Just maybe.

Thinking about the other podcast with Rick Clunn. Talking about embracing the new technology back in the early days and D's flipping stick. Think about this, you could still compete against flashers, flipping such. But now for the mid to older guys this is potentially the tool that is going to force them into early retirement or others never having the career they could have because of it, I do have it but I don't know. Just a thought.

Dave my main problem with FFS is that I fish allot of 100 to 1000 acre lakes in Florida and FFS is starting to hurt these lakes ! The pan fish ( Crappie / Bream are being caught at a much higher rate than ever ! Plus Shinner Guides from south Florida actually come into the lakes and net shiners in these small lakes . It’s devastating!!! Plus more Bass are getting caught as well ! Even though most release the Bass , but the more times they are caught doesn’t help them ! I am hoping for a grass roots level of anglers to stop or limit when FFS can be used in these lakes by letting fishery management know what’s going on ! In Florida the fish don’t get a rest like up north! The Anglers always talk about how it’s hard to fish in Florida. It’s going to get worse if something is not done !

You have a valid concern. However I am sure if they deem it a conversation issue in the future it will be addressed by the state agencies. Right now it’s too early to come to any conclusions without having the science behind it. I am sure it’s being studied by many groups
