    I’ve been out of the game 20+ years, my son just bent his brand new car, 2k to repair at the body shop .Bought a full spray kit from GT Air 400.00, watched a few up to date videos bit of self taught pdr have just done the most fantastic 2k base and clear job. I’ve now just acquired a small lock up. The hobby has returned, looking for projects.

    Now I might get various comments for this, but without the room to make a proper spray booth I eventually decided to paint my car under a gazebo on the hot days. I'm not green to paintwork, I work as a smart repair bodywork guy. So anyway to cut a long story short, over the period of a week ( odd days) I managed to paint my car in the fresh air, put extra layers of lacquer on to have something to cut back to polish. It was difficult and you couldn't do it in winter, but there are always way around it, and you can get a show finnish if you don't hurry and take your time.

    Great video! I was in the painting biz myself. Thank you for touching on three key points, air compressor sizing, respirators and ventilation. So many DIYs use too small a compressor, little or no respirator protection and no ventilation. The end result is they're standing in a closed space, waiting for the compressor to build up whilst breathing in things that can kill them.

    Thank you so much for doing this! Currently going through the complete drivetrain and suspension on a '59 F100. Getting ready to purchase a welder and start the bodywork next year. Started looking into what getting it painted was going to run and was blown away with the price of getting it painted. It looked like it would cost me two or three times what I'm going to have in the truck just to get it painted. No way I can afford that! Got so bummed out I thought of giving up on the whole project. Just crushed!
    Your previous videos have been so helpful that now I have hope again I can learn to do this myself and actually realize my dream of restoring/restomodding this old truck myself.
    Thank you so much!

And recently went to a full face mask respirator, love it! Recently painted the entire inside of my van. Moving to the exterior next week.

    Ok i have to ask a stupid question. i know about the suction gun, and i have a HLVP gun, but what are the ones you have and what is the difference between them and a HLVP gun? cause they look just like the HLVP guns i have. i'm trying to figure out what i'm missing here. and i am in no way a body or paint guy. i struggle with it. being color blind doesn't help either.

    I tell the home gamers to stay away from HVLP. They tend to think it is the best technology. I explain it is more of an emissions standard that business must comply with. To achieve the higher transfer rates the air pressure is dropped at the air cap. That makes it a challenge to atomize the fluid usually increasing orange peel and potential runs. Any material savings for the occasional work will not be realized.
    In the States I consider Sharpe a quality entry level gun at reasonable prices. Something like the FX 2000. Also has a wide range of fluid tips maybe up to 1.8 or 2.0. I don't remember exactly but I remember it was pretty big.

    Thanks for taking the time Trev to give a honest video of your own personal experience in the real world of bodyshop repair. Its based on fact rather than theory and a pleasant surprise in relation to some other videos I have seen which can be theory based or even hearsay. Must admit when I worked in this area of the motor trade cellulose was being replaced by the Isocyanate or 2K ,the suppliers and manufacturers insisted you would probably expire very quickly if you did not use air fed masks! plus gloves and full body suit as it is absorbed through the skin too. Too be honest I had no idea carbon filters could be used as protection for 2K as I have been out of touch for so long that's why I find it interesting and informative plus entertaining of course. As you touched on extraction too the body shops had to invest huge amounts in new spray booths etc plus heaters which took a while for the guys to get used too, always remember the Peugeot 405 that came in for new bumpers in the craze at the time of part painted. The young lad in the shop set the heat and timer wrong resulting in the bumpers liquifying hanging off the car a very expensive lesson. Rambling on now about happy memories apart from the spiders that seemed to be gigantic due to cellulose absorbs ion lol. Cheers Trev long may you continue.

      @tonydalton6756 3 года назад +1

      Those carbon filters are pretty amazing. You can't smell a thing until you take the mask off. It's best to buy pre-filters though as a lot of the paint gets caught by them to save the carbon from early saturation.

      If that’s the gun recommended then they probably know more than I do about that specific product. When I painted metal flake I used an old jga gun but I can’t remember the air cap set up. It was a suction feed with a couple of ball bearings in the pot to keep the metal flake agitated. My only concern is using a gravity feed gun… Will the flake all sink to the bottom? Something to consider 👍

    Very interested in spraying cellulose for the period look. Would be interested in learning more about that. What do you think about running a gang of smaller compressors all plumbed together for more volume? Might not please the neighbors but would it work? Thankfully in Germany and Switzerland all homes have 3 phase to the house or flat.

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  2 года назад +1

      Cellulose is basically the same preparation process it’s just thinned with around 50% thinners with no hardener. It typically oxidises faster than 2K giving it a faded look quicker. Yes compressors all feeding the same output line would work absolutely fine. 👍

    Do you have any videos on the order of the passes, meaning where do you make the first , second, third pass and so on. Do you start on a door for example on the edges then around the window frame and then the panels? I hope you understand my question, it is difficult to put into words.
    Thanks for your hard work.
    JIM

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  2 года назад +1

      The key is to spray all of the edges and hard to reach areas first. Then put a uniform coat of paint over the whole panel. Speed of the strokes is dependent on the paint being sprayed. Some top coats flow once applied so runs could be a problem. Other top coats don’t flow so well so slower passes and getting closer to the panel is required to achieve a good finish. Cheers Trev 👍

    Thanks Trev, nice video. I spayed my MG Midget in cellulose using similar kit to the stuff in your video and it worked ok. I would like to do the 924 in epoxy based paints eventually. Is there much difference in spraying technique between the two materials?

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  2 года назад +2

      No a major amount of difference to be honest. All paints have their own unique characteristics even what would be classed as the same type of paint by different brands will spray slightly differently though. It’s worth having a practice to understand each products characteristics before repainting your car for sure. Cheers Trev

    On another note:
    You can get quite a good paint set-up if you are willing to fix broken or well used stuff.
    My favourite gun was a well used Devilbiss HVLP bought for £10 from a bootsale. I just bought the overhaul kit from Devilbiss themselves. It looked like something out of a horror movie but luckily it had only been used for cellulose.
    My compressor is the same as Your ABAC 200 litres which I bought for £50 because it had thrown a crank due to lack of oil. I just bought a new pump for £220. The tank & motor were just out of guarantee so pretty new.

    Just been doing some more research into Isocyanates for my own safety and to validate for myself what Trev was saying about respirators ability to keep you safe. I found a very long but interesting video by the BC Construction Safety Alliance called "Isocyanates - Silent Sensitizers webinar January 20, 2021". (also on RUclips). This is certainly well worth watching as It does confirm that a respirator used with the correct filters will give you protection for a certain length of time and also covered the importance of proper ventilation as Trev was telling us about. I now have a second source of information to support my primary and trusted source which is Trev's channel. Great video Trev, truly helpful as always.

    Regarding Isocyonates. I was spraying a very small section on a car and got the paint and clear coat from a local automotive paint supplier. So I went to the 3M website to find out which respirator filter to buy to protect me and it said, and I paraphrase here, that they do not make a filter capable of filtering out that contaminate and that the only option was a fresh air fed mask. They further said if you can smell it, you've already been overexposed. This concerned me since I wasn't about to buy a fresh air fed mask system. I wound up spraying it outside, with a fan directed toward my head (not the area I was painting). I wore a full suit, with goggles and the best respirator available at the paint store. Since it was just a really small area, I even held my breath while I sprayed and then ran away after putting on a coat. LOL. Must have looked pretty funny. But I can honestly say I have no idea what that paint smells like. Given the danger, I'm not sure I will ever spray a whole car. Just FYI.

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  Год назад

      I wouldn’t buy a 3M respirator. There are a lot of 3M respirators that I have been told could be copies. I prefer to use a Gerson respirator with a A1 B1 classification. The problem with cartridge respirators is that you’re basically pulling in fumes through the same filter, it’s possible to overwhelm the filter with prolonged use and get poisoned! especially if you’re wearing the respirator for a long period of time during the same painting session. To add a little balance, you have to realise that we now live in a world where common sense has gone out of the window and suing companies for compensation has become widespread. The result is that companies now issue advice that keeps them from not being sued, that means over the top health and safety. The 3M canister respirators should give you a certain level of protection provided they’re the correct classification, they’re probably stating that it’s preferable to wear an air fed because A. People often don’t have common sense B. They don’t want to be sued! I’ve worked with people that have painted all of their professional lives and they haven’t suffered I’ll effects. The most important with regards to safety is ventilation. If the paint mist is being removed rapidly then the respirator will be filtering nearly clean air. If you can’t see your hand in front of your face because the overspray is so thick in the air, your respirator will soon become overwhelmed.

    Hi trev,i just purchased a voilamart lvlp 600cc with a 1.3mm nozzle, I haven't used it yet as I'm trying to build up an inventory of things i need prior to prepping and painting my first project car, I've watched your video's and they're so informative, and make alot of sense, reason i got a lvlp gun is mainly because i purchased the wrong size compressor, my bad, obviously didn't do my homework on compressors, but i am told i can just about get away using a lvlp gun for my work, I'll be testing it out on a sheet of blank card or paper to get the best setup, would using a 1.3 nozzle for primer be adequate, as according to it's description it implies that it can be used for all paint types, but i won't know this until i get to use it, next thing on my long list is the right filter mask made for for the job, even have the proper paint overalls, maybe going over the top but as this is my first attempt, I can't afford to contaminate the finish with dust and hair or even bugs..?,anyways sorry to blabber on, can you give me any info on the 1.3 nozzle for primers and other paints....cheers trev..

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  2 года назад +1

      Ideally for primer you need a 1.8 but if you add more thinners the primer will come through a 1.3 but the build won’t be as thick so more coats will required to get a thicker film thickness. When a gun states that it’s ok for all paint types that normally means that it has stainless steel components that won’t rust when using water based paints. Cheers Trev 👍

    Trev, you mentioned about voltages for compressors. In North America we have both 110 and 220 voltages (or 120 and 240 depending on area and who you ask) going to the buildings. That way we choose which we need at the circuit panel. Most stoves, dryers and other heavy items use the 220v while the small stuff (normal wall outlets) uses the 110v. The 220 is simply 2 of the 110 circuts used together. So.. no issues getting a decent compressor here since we have 220v to the buildings.
    I always enjoy your videos, by the way.

    I would recommend the Devilbiss FLG-5, Iwata Belaria or Iwata Kiwami for topcoats. (budget minded buyers)
    The Iwata Air Gunsa is not a good value for the money, the build quality is pretty low compared to the other guns I listed in the similar price range.
    The airgunsa also has a really small fan compared to the other guns.
    I have the same gun as Trev (chrome flash) and I only use it for small jobs I don't care about. For the jobs I do care about, I use the Iwata LPH400 or Belaria.
    You don't need to spend a ton of cash on the top SATA or Iwata, but the nicer the gun, the easier time you will have painting. It takes more skill to get good results from a cheap gun than a more expensive gun.

    Still got a more than 20 years old Devilbiss 513, still as new. Gravity fed, conventional high pressure, best spray gun ever. Parts are still sold :)
    Bought it for myself when I was still a professional car painter, always kept it and use it for special projects only.

    Great vid trev. I have one of those 558 don't use it but got it in a group deal. I have a devilbiss gravity feed hvlp with a 1.2 tip and then I bought a group set of guns for £10 for 4 guns 2 were just cheap guns that are fit for scrap but 1 was the 558 and the other was a devilbiss sri gravity feed with a 0.8 so for the money I could not lose. Stripped and soaked in thinners now all sorted. I would say for any diyer to watch Facebook market place/ ebay and buy a second hand good guns as you will find great deals out there and now that devilbiss have the new dv1 that seems to be the new best all rounder the old gti pro lite will soon appear for sale cheap. If you watch grants autobody he has various guns and recently used his pro lite and was just blown away how great a gun it still is and he has various iwata and sata guns aswell as the new dv1.

    My brother and I restore vintage tractors and taught ourselves to paint via youtube. We even built our own booth which is remarkably like yours. We plan to revamp the workshop soon and will definitely be looking at improving our extraction system and making the filter box a similar size to your one. I've used many of your welding and panel beating tips over the past few years and it certainly making the end product far more professional.....keep the good work coming please

    What are your thoughts on LVLP guns? Ever used one? Supposed to be ideal for low cfm home compressors, the only use around 4-6 cfm apparently. The Fast Mover FMT3006 perhaps?

    • @trevsblog

      Not sure to be honest. A painter I used to work with bought a fast mover lvlp gun as a cheap tool to paint a load of machine parts as he didn’t want to wear his best kit out, essentially painting stuff that didn’t require a brilliant finish. He was surprised at how good it was. After that I don’t have any experience. Cheers Trev 👍

    looked into learning to paint a couple of years ago to initially do my rebuild Locost kit car chassis, did load of watchng of DIY paint booths on you tube, some bad but loads of good stuff built a booth out of dexion racking, covered with plastic sheet sealed to the floor with a decorators zip up door, fresh air draw in top corner pulled in by two low level fans with filters. bought some fast mover basic guns with different size tips used these for primer, base and clear coat. used an air feed mask and plenty of good lighting.
    made loads of mistakes but got a reasonable finish on the chassi and all the panels, followed on by flatting and polishing learnt in the same way. now just need to get the engine running right . would thoroughtthly recommend it, but as you say only buy what you thing you will need and be prepared to compromise on the finish for the cost and satifaction of doing it yourself

      This sounds brilliant Richard, so nice to hear an enthusiasts story. You know what… my basic philosophy is that there really is no one way, if it works it works no matter what you’ve done. I often also think that people are often chasing a perfection that just isn’t worth it. If you’re having fun and getting the satisfaction of creation then that’s pretty perfect in my book! Hi Trev, thanks for the pointers on the basics. I've been following for a few years now and I love your work. I have a question regarding surface rust. I have a car with some panels that have been out in the weather for some time. (the previous owner striped some of the paint and left it). What do you think will kill the rust and leave it clean enough to confidently paint over? I would hate to do lots of work then find in a year or so the rust will start under the paint. Once again, thanks for your videos and your help. If I ever get to the Mother Country, I'll defiantly drop in for coffee and a cake.

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  2 года назад +1

      It depends what you mean by surface rust? If it is literally sat on the surface then you should be able to sand it off with 80g disc’s then finish with 180g. If it’s deeper then shot blasting would be the way to go. Cheers Trev 👍

      Yes I would be quite dubious about buying a top end gun from eBay, I haven’t bought what I’d call an expensive gun just budget equipment. The most expensive was about £100 if that’s fake then I’m more than happy as it sprays as good as anything I’ve seen 👍

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  2 года назад +1

      The fan I have is designed to vent combustible fumes. It would certainly be advisable to use a spark proof fan, one of the things I should have mentioned… getting real though the chances of the concentrations being high enough especially using a filter would be incredibly low. After 35 years of experience I’ve never heard of this happening, to think we used to spray cellulose with a paraffin space heater spitting out flames with a car radiator cooling van for extraction 🤦🏻 cheers Trev 👍
