You hit the nail on the head with the motor trade in general…. I was a Master Tech, I decided after way too long cars and bikes need to be a hobby not a job. Too much hassle, too much expenditure on tools and equipment and customers on the whole are painful. I used to do ‘foreigners’ after work, the customers would ask ‘how much’, my price was always set about 20-50% cheaper than at the dealership I worked for, they would nearly always stuck their teeth and question the price, my reply was always that’s the price or bring it to work and I will do it for more 🤷 Also most customers think you are trying to rob them, cut corners and do shoddy workmanship because that’s what the media has them believing…. I now just work on my own cars and for a few select friends and earn my living outside of the motor trade earning many times more what I did in it…. Which means I can afford better cars and bikes as toys now… A win around.
Yep all to familiar story. The thing I could never understand was that there became a bullying culture when the insurance companies decided to cripple the accident repair trade. Rather than stand up to the insurance companies the managers of these bodyshops turned into real nasty pieces of work. A couple of decades on and they’re now completely screwed for staff. I know it’s sad but I can’t help having a smile when I hear of garages begging for staff. Good on you anyway it sounds like you’ve got the best of both worlds. Cheers Trev 👍

Good to see you back Trev. Building a custom car here in Australia with a known builder the likes of Howard Astil will set you back $400,000 minimum. But that's is a start to finish custom
Good to have you back although I've been following the Baking Bird posts so thought you'd moved over to welding cakes lol. Nice to know I haven't missed part 20
I built a temporary spray booth with plastic and a box fan and ac filters and it worked great.. cheep and cheerful and took down right after everything dried..got great results even if a few boogers i had to sand off... But you gave me some good tips here .. Thanks!
I'm right there with you mate, I've got a 19x11 garage and a 12 x 10 shed in the backyard with another open but covered 12 x 12 work area, I usually do my painting outdoors (California). I'm max'd out for space, and people are always asking me if I want to renew their motorbikes. With labor and parts it wouldn't be worth it for them, I just tell them to do the best they can on their own bikes, watch the Trev's Blog, etc.
Yes spot on. I’ve actually absorbed the cost myself to make it affordable for people to get what they want. It’s a slippery slope because the moment you start doing this kind of thing the flood gates open and every man and his uncle want a favour. My wake up call was investing hundreds of hours of my own time into friends projects just to watch them very quickly sell the finished car/bike on for huge profits. Talk about being taken for a MUG 🤦🏻♂️. Cheers Trev 👍
Good afternoon Trev, sure glad to hear from you again. Once again a very useful technology for a diy paint booth. Thanks for the suggestion of filter material. You take care and good luck.
Hi! Trev! Realy looking forward to see what videos and projects you are doing in the futrure. I have learned alot from you alredy, but is eager to learn more😊Best Regards from Norway😊
Great vid. I've just shut my body shop after 7 years too lol I agree with every word you said about working on other people's projects. Glad I'm out of it !!
Hey Trev, you explained the reality of car Resto really well. Glad to hear the wife's business is doing well. Making vids of custom panels is you expertise and I'm sure all your subscriber's are here for the same reason. I have a crack at anything and it's thanks to people like yourself on RUclips, I give them a go. 👍🇦🇺
😂Well done Trev, the average person doesn't realise how long these things take and what detailed work goes into it, 20 yrs ago you couldn't get me away from my car and video projects but now as I have become older windswept and interesting and the thatch on the roof has either fallen out or got greyer you cant get me near them! I keep giving them a good looking at every time I walk by them. I really must pull my finger out and at least restore my dads Morris Minor. As for the video editing I got 2 minutes if that done per evening if I was lucky and then you've got music voice overs and effects if you want them used to love doing all that. Anyway thats my rant over and God Bless our friend across the big pond! See you soon Trev 😁
We’ll said and good Onya Trev, do what you’ve gotta do lol thank you for all your videos it has certainly helped me with tackling my own car fab jobs, after first starting to watch your vids a couple of years ago, greatly appreciated. It all came together last year after I built a 1/4 scale push car replica of our car as a surprise for our 1st grandson and a lot of things I learnt from you helped me complete it after 8 months lol as I l’ve run my own small business for nearly 30 years I know what you mean, regarding no time haha Thank you once again and all the best with whatever you do in your free time lol take care 🙂👍
Welcome back . The filter worked very well. The resto information is excellent. The figures involved are the same in Australia. $120 for a mechanic. $90 for a resto shop
Was curious/concerned about what was happening. Glad to hear things are working out the way you want. Have you ever considered running some courses? I think you'd make a really good hands on teacher.
Thank you and yes I have thought about running courses. This would be something I’d be interested in if I could get it all arranged properly. Right now I wouldn’t be in a position to do this but in the future I may well be.
Trev! What do you mean it’s a flat no! I NEED someone to work on my cars paint 🎨!! But REALLY, I’ve missed your videos. The customer interaction you described rang true with a negotiation I am pursuing as a customer. Sometimes, we just have to man up and say “Thanks for your bid but this is an opportunity for me to learn a new skill (and buy a new planishing hammer!) to boot! Thanks Trev. Look forward to seeing you more.
Great to have you back. Fully understand and agree with the points you make in respect of running a business. Key point is doing what makes you happy !
Absolutely great to see you back Trevor. All those domestic chores eventually catch up on everyone and must then be done. Welcome back, looking forwards to new content.👍
Great video 👍So happy for you and the course you have found in life,as to the talk about restoration Bangs &Cash the restores have answered the question 🤣
Good to see you back and glad to hear things are going well. Life is short so enjoy it and don't worry about those wanting you to do cars for them. Yeah 40 is super hot for you guys. It's been 40+ (115*F for the highs)daily here for 2 months and it doesn't cool off at night. I gave up on any progress or work in the shop till the end of September when it starts cooling off. Trying to run a business restoring cars isn't hard, Running a profitable and enjoyable one is. Few understand the amount of time and materials needed to restore a car.
Good on you Trev, I am trying to sort myself out at the moment as over the years I have created issues which have not done me any favours and left me feeling less than happy about work.
The main thing is, you’ve identified the problem! If you know what the problems are you can take steps to rectify your situation and move forward. Cheers Trev 👍
Thing is Trev the general public have absolutely no idea whats involved in restoration work, im a vehicle tech and this side of the trade is exactly the same, it really is a no win situation that causes you a lot of stress its like “why have you charged me 6 hours just to repair a broken wire” … well its took me longer than that to actually find the fault … you cant win, all the best with ur new venture 👍
Steve I’ve never met a customer that said, just do me a good job and charge me what it’s worth. I’m totally finished taking on work for customers or working for garages repairing cars, either one is a total waste of my life. I’ve just seen a staff wanted poster in Burger Star they’re paying £1.50 PH more than I was being paid at a main dealership fitting new chassis legs on a body jig and getting crap off the boss all day long. On a really busy day I can sell over £1000 of coffee… in six hours! I then get people trying to explain to me that I’m wasted pouring coffee and they insist that I really should be working on cars…
Hi Trev, so pleased to see you back. Regarding the spray booth, two points. I’m no expert, but the ventilation flow rate seems very high, enough breeze to pick up bits of dust and fling them about. You could turn down the fan a bit, I think, and double the layer of the filter fabric, reducing air flow and improving filtration in the process…. Just a thought. Also you need to stress to your viewers that fire is a major threat with filters: even if the fabric is fire resistant the dirt it traps may well not be, and fire plus forced ventilation equals blast furnace! Watch out guys. Watch a cooker hood go up in flames if you want to see something spectacular. I know what you mean about doing work for others. Just say no, and never weaken. Fabulous videos, mate, I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you! Cheers Will
Thanks for the tips 👍 worth mentioning that I’ve used the set up and painted my van roof which came out so clean I didn’t need to polish it. I go to town cleaning the inlet just before painting, this works well for me. Thanks 👍
Trev pull your finger out lad, so many excuses 🤣 I need more content 😉 Just kidding great to see you back, I've learned a lot from you and I've been in the body repair game for 37 years. Every day is a school day.
Good to see you back. Few tips - shove the kids in the roof, they haven't got a thermostat. Love the incest stick stuff. Dog turds into the neighbors yard to "thank" them. I'm in Oz - 40 degrees isn't really a picnic here either - mind you you can always get a few icy colds to dull the pain.
Interesting inlet filter for the paint booth by using that landscaping fabric. Maybe another test would be to paint a panel and see how much if anything it lets through and onto the painted panel.
Great to hear from you Trev. Your van business is an amazing achievement and it's no surprise that it's taken a bunch of your time. Well done to you and Tracey for taking charge of your lives and doing what you want! I too am much happier doing work on my own cars and other projects these days rather than getting paid to work on someone else's. Looking forward to seeing the upcoming videos mate 🤩
Thanks for taking your time to keep us updated. Really learned a lot from watching your previous videos and glad to hear you're planning on doing more. All the best to you and your family. Glad to hear the catering business is going well. Based on what I've seen being an aspiring gearhead since I was a kid, and having my own business for 42 years (not automotive related), I think you're perspective on what you want to do and not do is very healthy.
Hey Trev, any chance you could restore my mk1 f.... lol just kidding, great to see you back. Your fabrication videos are my favourite, so happy you might get time to do some more.
Great to see you again. If you are to embark on a new fab series, please allow me to offer a suggestion. Many home DIY guys are bringing back cars between 40 to 70 years old with anunknown history. There is a lot of bodged repairs that need sorting, etc etc. rust repair and panels that require hand forming needing jigs and templates design and construction
I agree 1000% people watch "wheeler dealers" and then get a scrap car and either try to do it themselves realise its hard work and not like on TV and it ends up in the scrap yard and the welder for sale on ebay - fabrication work takes skill and TIME to get it right that you cant put a price or time limit on - especially when you are a perfectionist - and people ALWAYS want a price written in blood and not a penny over !! I use to use the old mantra - "if you have to ask a price you cant afford it " !! _ only ever had ONE job where the bloke appreciated my talent and never asked a price as long as it was "right" he did not care - but guys that rich don't come along very often - just remember main dealers charge £80 - £100 per HOUR just to plug your car into the computer and bolt on new parts - so you need MORE for your talent - NEVER under estimate or under price skill and INTEGRITY !! thanks for all your video's they are a pleasure to watch
Nice to see you back. You talked about fabricating with a limited amount of tools. You might like Fritzees Fabrications. He is in Newfoundland ,Canada. He uses the Cut and Butt method. Good Luck with your shed.
Good to see a deeper explanation of what we were talking about today over that great cappuccino you made me. Hoping that I didn’t make it awkward for you when I said you had skills to fall back on in case of a recession hitting the catering business but yeah we gotta all do what makes us happy. Btw I had a thought - you probably only get inundated with requests because you’re so flipping good at what you do 😂
Glad to see you're back Trev...was just wondering the other day if you'd had given up on YT or not. I know what you mean about wanting to do your own thing...I think we all get to a point in our lives where that becomes more and more of a priority (DAMHIKT) 🙂
@@trevsblog you have to do what makes you happy and content not work yourself to death with no real returns, and satisfaction. You have got to have sane you time.
Time is the one thing you can't buy back. When you spend it with family it is always well spent. I'm also going to say that you could have filmed the repairs to the yard and it would have been something to see. I mean this is Trev's blog as long as you are in it it's on subject.
New to your content , one of the few good recommendations from You Tube I have had . Really enjoy the content . It is a great shame you are not selling your obvious expertise in fabrication, our loss . I understand the comment regarding hourly rate and what to charge .I really wish I had your skill , I hugely admire the talent . Follow what makes you happy , good luck and best wishes 🙏.
As always, great vid. And especially the last part, dealing with the public and doing this full time. That really sucks, as I run my own company, and have that exact issue with many clients wanting stuff on the cheap, or for free, or lying about budget and me ending up having invested thousands of hours and then they decide they want their stuff without paying. I am done with this crap, for over 45 years restoration and rebuilds and normal repairs etc. Oh hell no. I will be focusing on my industrial design, and build things I enjoy and that are new to this world. You seem like a Sigma male, like myself, yet I am a lone wolf and will stay that way. People WILL disappoint you, they WILL try scrounge and abuse one's skills and the narcissistic clients are the worst. Cause they have mental disease and belive the world owes them and they WILL want to fully extract all they can from us for free Yet the work used to be okay, but now, with economy and inflation, they try abuse the situation by wanting to pay nothing and sell their "what used to be worthless wrecks" and are pristine now, thanks to my skills knowledge and experience, for HUGE profit to them, but they don't want to pay me even 15% of actual time invested. Now that there is a real rant from me...😉 Bottom line, TIME is money... and TIME wasted on useless narcissists clients, is time you will never ever get back or rewarded for.
Unfortunately this is how life is. You need a degree in psychology to be able deal with what people will throw at you. I’ve become acutely sensitive to this kind of thing now. (People trying to take advantage) People that want to take advantage tend to follow typical patterns of behaviour, including trying to do you favours for reciprocal reasons. Other familiar tactics include trying to undermine your relationships with your close friends or they undermine your plans after they have asked you what you intend to do next. The wearing down tactic is pretty common, you’ve explained your reasons for not doing something, they go away and come back the following week with the same ask. I don’t explain myself twice anymore, it’s just a flat no now. It’s easier to say no over and over again than to open the flood gate of advantage. Remember this, know your limits because those trying to take advantage don’t have any! I have no issue with people asking me to do repairs on their vehicles that don’t know my situation, that’s a totally different thing but once I’ve explained things and they then change tactic and ask again after I’ve said no, then they’re not empathetic or respectful of my wellbeing.
Love the style you do high quality work with a sort of a achievable amount of tools. Would love to see real world repairs on the van! How do you approach this type of job? I'm already excited!

So glad to have you back! I can’t wait to see where you go from here!
Thank you for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Good afternoon Trev, sure glad to hear from you again. Once again a very useful technology for a diy paint booth. Thanks for the suggestion of filter material. You take care and good luck.

Great vid. I've just shut my body shop after 7 years too lol
I agree with every word you said about working on other people's projects. Glad I'm out of it !!
Yep it’s a great hobby but not such a great business perhaps. Thanks 👍
Good to see you back
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍

Thank you for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Hey Trev, you explained the reality of car Resto really well.
Glad to hear the wife's business is doing well.
Making vids of custom panels is you expertise and I'm sure all your subscriber's are here for the same reason.
I have a crack at anything and it's thanks to people like yourself on RUclips, I give them a go.
👍🇦🇺
Thank you 👍
Good to have you back. Great idea about using landscape fabric for a filter material.
Thank you 👍
😂Well done Trev, the average person doesn't realise how long these things take and what detailed work goes into it, 20 yrs ago you couldn't get me away from my car and video projects but now as I have become older windswept and interesting and the thatch on the roof has either fallen out or got greyer you cant get me near them!
Thanks Pete see you soon 👍
More Power to You Trev , I'm glad you're able to do what you want and when you want!! I watch your videos no matter what you work On!!
Thanks Tom, I really appreciate that. Cheers Trev 👍
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Welcome back . The filter worked very well. The resto information is excellent. The figures involved are the same in Australia. $120 for a mechanic. $90 for a resto shop
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Great to see you back - it'll be good to see the difference between you and Fitzee with the repair patches and yes , Runge has done some amazing stuff
I’ll do my best 👍
What superb work .And a proper Billy Fury hair style.
Thank you 👍
Welcome back. I look forward to your new projects, and of course what I can learn.
Thank you 👍
Was curious/concerned about what was happening.
@@trevsblog Put me on the waiting list Trev! 👍
We all want you to be in your happy place - your shop!
Thank you 👍
so glad to see you back hope to see new videos when you get other project done life does get busy and thank you for all the previous videos
Thank you 👍
Thank you 👍
total respect Trev
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Great to have you back.
Fully understand and agree with the points you make in respect of running a business. Key point is doing what makes you happy !
Thank you 👍
Very very intetesting to hear your views on restoration times cost etc.
People who can not do do not know.
True 👍
Absolutely great to see you back Trevor.
All those domestic chores eventually catch up on everyone and must then be done.
Welcome back, looking forwards to new content.👍
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Hi Trev, nice to see your still going strong, power to your elbow.
We wait with anticipation for what comes next 😁!!!!
Thank you for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Great video 👍So happy for you and the course you have found in life,as to the talk about restoration Bangs &Cash the restores have answered the question 🤣
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Great to see you back Trev. "Quality" not "Quantity", keep doing it your way.
Thank you 👍
Good luck Trev! Stick to what makes you happy, life is too short for stress.
Thank you 👍
Good to see you back and glad to hear things are going well.
Thank you 👍
Good on you Trev, I am trying to sort myself out at the moment as over the years I have created issues which have not done me any favours and left me feeling less than happy about work.
The main thing is, you’ve identified the problem! If you know what the problems are you can take steps to rectify your situation and move forward. Cheers Trev 👍
Sooooo goooood to have you back Trev!!👏👏🍻😎 Gus🇳🇴
Thank you 👍
Thing is Trev the general public have absolutely no idea whats involved in restoration work, im a vehicle tech and this side of the trade is exactly the same, it really is a no win situation that causes you a lot of stress its like “why have you charged me 6 hours just to repair a broken wire” … well its took me longer than that to actually find the fault … you cant win, all the best with ur new venture 👍
@@trevsblog It really is a joke Trev ur better off out of it tbh and if i could get out i would also
Hi Trev, so pleased to see you back.
Thank you!
Cheers
Will
Thanks for the tips 👍 worth mentioning that I’ve used the set up and painted my van roof which came out so clean I didn’t need to polish it. I go to town cleaning the inlet just before painting, this works well for me. Thanks 👍
I look forward to seeing what your Chris Runge inspired project could be! I imagine it'll make for a very long series of bodywork videos.
Thank you 👍
Trev pull your finger out lad, so many excuses 🤣 I need more content 😉
Just kidding great to see you back, I've learned a lot from you and I've been in the body repair game for 37 years.
Every day is a school day.
Thank you 👍
Good to see you back.
Thank you 👍
Do what makes Trev happy!
Thank you 👍
Great to see you back.
Thank you 👍
Awesome video thank you Trev
Thank you 👍
Interesting inlet filter for the paint booth by using that landscaping fabric. Maybe another test would be to paint a panel and see how much if anything it lets through and onto the painted panel.
No doubt I’ll be putting it to the test. I’m absolutely sure that it’ll work as well as what I was using before. Cheers Trev 👍
Thanks Sean as always much appreciated, you’re always a great support. 👍
It’s been a very long time Trev 👍🏻
Cheers Rodders 👍
Thanks for taking your time to keep us updated. Really learned a lot from watching your previous videos and glad to hear you're planning on doing more. All the best to you and your family. Glad to hear the catering business is going well. Based on what I've seen being an aspiring gearhead since I was a kid, and having my own business for 42 years (not automotive related), I think you're perspective on what you want to do and not do is very healthy.
Thank you 👍
Both anxious to see your up and coming videos Trev!! Can't wait till you find the time and room to get back to work. See you soon!!
Thank you 👍
Hey Trev, any chance you could restore my mk1 f.... lol just kidding, great to see you back. Your fabrication videos are my favourite, so happy you might get time to do some more.
You actually wouldn’t believe how much I get asked 🤣 Yes back to making videos for sure, happy days 👍
Thank you 👍
I agree 1000% people watch "wheeler dealers" and then get a scrap car and either try to do it themselves realise its hard work and not like on TV and it ends up in the scrap yard and the welder for sale on ebay - fabrication work takes skill and TIME to get it right that you cant put a price or time limit on - especially when you are a perfectionist - and people ALWAYS want a price written in blood and not a penny over !!
Hey thanks Colin it sounds like we’re both on the same track, much appreciated 👍
You’ve got to take the power back, great update, I’ve almost finished my Statesman shell and my son his mini thou, have a good one Trev
Thank you 👍
Thanks for the video update Trev.
Thank you 👍
Great to see you back!
Thank you 👍
Glad to see you back trev 👍
Thank you 👍
Welcome back Trev
Thank you 👍
Nice to see you back. You talked about fabricating with a limited amount of tools. You might like Fritzees Fabrications. He is in Newfoundland ,Canada. He uses the Cut and Butt method. Good Luck with your shed.
Thank you 👍
Trevs back! Awesome!
Thank you 👍
Good to see a deeper explanation of what we were talking about today over that great cappuccino you made me. Hoping that I didn’t make it awkward for you when I said you had skills to fall back on in case of a recession hitting the catering business but yeah we gotta all do what makes us happy. Btw I had a thought - you probably only get inundated with requests because you’re so flipping good at what you do 😂
Thank you 👍
Trevor you got one Life leave it 😎❤️ do what makes you happy. PS.... Haven't heard a lot from the baking bird 🤣
Thank you 👍
Glad to see you're back Trev...was just wondering the other day if you'd had given up on YT or not. I know what you mean about wanting to do your own thing...I think we all get to a point in our lives where that becomes more and more of a priority (DAMHIKT) 🙂
Thank you 👍
Good for you !
Thank you 👍
@@trevsblog you have to do what makes you happy and content not work yourself to death with no real returns, and satisfaction. You have got to have sane you time.
I know EXACTLY what you´r talking about, Customers. Been there done that.
Thank you 👍
Time is the one thing you can't buy back. When you spend it with family it is always well spent. I'm also going to say that you could have filmed the repairs to the yard and it would have been something to see. I mean this is Trev's blog as long as you are in it it's on subject.
Thank you 👍
New to your content , one of the few good recommendations from You Tube I have had .
Thank you 👍 don’t forget you can always get better, if you’re frustrated that’s good just keep on improving.
Trev you only get one life so enjoy yourself!
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Cause they have mental disease and belive the world owes them and they WILL want to fully extract all they can from us for free
Yet the work used to be okay, but now, with economy and inflation, they try abuse the situation by wanting to pay nothing and sell their "what used to be worthless wrecks" and are pristine now, thanks to my skills knowledge and experience, for HUGE profit to them, but they don't want to pay me even 15% of actual time invested.
Now that there is a real rant from me...😉
Bottom line, TIME is money... and TIME wasted on useless narcissists clients, is time you will never ever get back or rewarded for.
I wish you the very best 👍👍😎👍👍
Thank you 👍
Trev's back
Thanks for your comment, very much appreciated 👍
Love the style you do high quality work with a sort of a achievable amount of tools. Would love to see real world repairs on the van! How do you approach this type of job? I'm already excited!
Thanks 🙏🏼 here is a link to the Van playlist ruclips.net/p/PLG_YX_JZfu_iEhrXSBBVUedZpHYILmarf cheers Trev 👍
Trevor - Ever heard of "The Ventures" ?? and their "Wipe Out " .... your kind of vibe !!
Cheers
It sure is! Cheers Trev 👍
I totally agree. I don't want to do it for a business as I believe I would lose the passion
Thank you 👍
