Son confronts salesman for 'selling confused mum £6k doors'
Angry son confronts salesman for selling his dementia suffering mum £6000 of doorsMoment an angry son confronts double-glazing company that sold his 81-year-old mother two doors for nearly £6,000 when all she needed was a £50 handle
Dominic MacMahon claims 81-year-old mother was taken advantage of
Dr Heather Collins 'persuaded to pay £6,000 for new front and back doors
But all she wanted was the front door handle at Essex home fixed
Double glazers Zenith Staybrite Ltd are conducting internal investigation A son has accused a double-glazing company of 'preying on the elderly' after he discovered his vulnerable mum had been sold two doors for nearly £6,000 when all she needed was a £50 handle.
Dominic MacMahon claimed double-glazing company Zenith Staybrite Ltd had taken advantage of his 81-year-old mother Dr Heather Collins.
Dr Collins was cold-called by the the company on Monday evening and told the rep the handle on her front door was loose and needed fixing.
The following day a salesman arrived and spent about two-and-a-half hours with the widow, who gets confused about what day of the week it is and needs the support of three part time carers so she can live independently.
The day after the sale, Mr MacMahon confronted the Zenith Staybrite Ltd salesman and filmed the encounter, left and right, before posting it to Facebook where it went viral
Dr Collins, a grandmother of two, was persuaded to hand over a cheque for an eye-watering £5,743.73 for a new front door and backdoor which Mr MacMahon says were simply 'not needed'.
The insurance broker from Colchester, Essex, returned the following day and filmed the salesman who was back at the retired GP's home.
He can be seen confronting the salesman - who is sat in Dr Collins' front room - who claims he was unaware the pensioner was suffering from dementia-like symptoms.
Mr MacMahon puts a string of questions to the rep who denies any wrongdoing.
The company confirmed this afternoon that an internal investigation had been launched but refused to comment any further.
The five-and-a-half minutes of footage was posted to Facebook just yesterday but has already been viewed more than 250,000 times with many left fuming by what they have seen.
Mr Macmahon, 50, pictured during the confrontation, called for tighter controls on companies after claiming they 'took advantage' of his elderly mother

Mr Macmahon, 50, pictured during the confrontation, called for tighter controls on companies after claiming they 'took advantage' of his elderly mother
Mr MacMahon, 50, has called for tighter controls on companies and charities who he claims take advantage of elderly and vulnerable members of the public.
Speaking this morning from his mother's home, also in Colchester, he said: 'I needed to emphasise to people what this man had done.
'I was very angry but by being able to put the footage online and tell other people what is going on makes more of a difference.
'This is one case - how many other people are going through this? People who don't have anybody to look after them like mother does.
'What we are hoping to do is make sure other vulnerable people are protected from this type of sale.'
He slammed the salesman for concluding the deal with Dr Collins - who lives alone and is easily confused about who people are and what they might be doing in her home.
He said: 'The salesman's behaviour is unbelievable - how can you treat another human being that way? How can he look himself in the face after he does that to a vulnerable old lady.
'As my mum was writing out that cheque for nearly £6,000, what was going through his head? Did he think this was the right thing to do?
'It's not sales - it's preying on older people and it's not acceptable in our society.
'Mum struggles with time and quantity - she has no idea what the implications of signing a cheque for £6,000 are.
'She actually thought she had bought two door handles for nearly £6,000
'If that money had gone - it would have directly compromised her ability to pay for her own carers.'

If an elderly family member has dementia or just isn't as "quick" as they were when they were younger, you need to take control of their finances to protect them from predators. Technology has made it incredibly easy for scammers to target the vulnerable population of our society.

    • @__JoeyWho
      @__JoeyWho 2 года назад

I agree to an extent that if an elderly family member suffers from dementia you should take some form of control, having a grandmother that suffers from it. However, this comment seems pretty insensitive to the fact that that sales companies prey on people with dementia because not every person om the planet has the time and/or resources to provide that level of care for that member/multiple members of family. What you really need to be thinking is 'wow any person with a shred of human decency wouldn't take 6000 quid from an 81 year old woman without proper justification and conformation'. Not one to be rude to people usually but if you're a reasonably well formed human you should realise the fault isn't with anyone but the people praying on the vulnerable.

I worked for this company when it was called zenith staybrite ( we was based in Brighton ).
We would be driven in a minibus around (I was 16) and pushed to get at least 5 'free quotes accepted'.
We would take the cards back to office and hand them in a pot to which the 'sales men' would go back out and turn that free quote into a sale by pushing people to buy.
I left after 2 weeks due to THIS kind of thing. We was even shown how to remove glass from a window with a credit card and was encouraged to show old people to scare them into buying / getting a quote for newer windows, guttering fascias soffits or door.

doors are actually fairly exspensive depending on what type you get, I recently installed 2 very nice etched glass front doors for 3k a piece on the doors alone not the labor. Granted this was for people who had the money and wanted all new doors and windows in their house and the best quality. The point is that quality isn't cheap. You can get 2 cheap wood doors from home depot for maybe 350 a piece but end up with wood rot a couple years down the road.
