Hi Katie the album I have a soft spot for is Tales of Mystery and Imagination, the Alan Parson project. When I was 12 years old, I found a book of Edgar Allan Poe's writings at a friends library, scared me to death. since then I'm always looking for a good gothic story. And thanks for some music, new to me
"What's going on" maybe in my mind one of the greatest albums ever. I got to see the Paradise Theater tour here in Chicago. I also got to meet Dennis DeYoung. My favorite concept is "Lamb lies down on Broadway." Great video Katie. Thanks.
Great to see Paradise Theatre represented here. I agree with you on the cover art . One of my favourite albums . I love the album so much that a few years ago , I managed to track down a signed copy ( by all 5 members ) of this album and it hangs proudly on my wall near my record collection. Nice video
Katie, thanks for your unique take on the concept album. Along these lines, before a potential companion volume 2 video, consider giving the album “Melankhôlia: In Darkness Through the Light” by Marina Viotti a listen, a provocative mashup of covers and Renaissance music performed by a mezzo-soprano accompanied by period and modern instrumentation.
@ If you stream it, be sure to pursue finding the liner-notes/insert. (If you Qobuz, it seems to be available with the album.) It contains the artist’s diary about the creation of the concept and a remarkable added dimension.
Great video. I really enjoyed “Hazards of Love” as well. I’m a bit surprised Ziggy Stardust lost out to Elton John. One of my favorites not mentioned is “Age of Adz” by Sufjan Stevens
@@kingmj87 That Sufjan is a great suggestion. Tbh Ziggy was one of the albums that we realised has “gone missing” from a batch of our fave albums (along with our OG Neutral Milk Hotel 😭)
Enjoyable video Katie. I don't know Ziggy Ramo but he sounds like my sort of artist. It reminded me of Men Cloher's beautiful album from 2023 "I am the river, the river is me" I also didn't realise that Natalie Merchant has a new album. Cheers Mike
If you haven’t listened I’d highly recommend Lord Huron! Vide Noir is my favorite of theirs but each of their albums are concepts. Lonesome Dreams follows a book written by a fictional author George Ranger Johnson, Strange Trails has an insanely deep lore I couldn’t even begin to get into here but we follow dozens of characters through a journey of love, revenge, death, resurrection, and the end of the world. Vide Noir is about a man who mentally breaks when his girlfriend/fiancé leaves him to follow her dreams out west and he follows after her all while falling into the pits of a new psychedelic drug that transports you across the cosmos. Their most recent album Long Lost is a compilation of songs that came through “the void” or “times blur” and the album follows an episode of “Live! From Whispering Pines” which plays songs recorded at Whispering Pines from a long lost multiverse. Each songs is from a different artist or band. The Reddit page has all the lore and links to find more information but I’d HIGHLY recommend listening through Vide Noir with the lyrics and you’ll have a new favorite!
Solid choices. It was cool to see Neutral Milk Hotel included in your list. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a favorite of mine. I live in Georgia, in between Atlanta and Athens. And accidently being the right age, and musical inclination, gave me the opportunity to see Athens emerge as a creative source of music. I got to see REM, The Glands, The DB's, Elephant 6 and Neutral Milk Hotel. But I digress. Off the top of my head and for what it's worth here's my list of concept albums: * 1950's- Mile Davis, Kind of Blue * 1960's- Beach Boys, Pet Sounds, John Coltrane, A Love Supreme * 1970's- Pink Floyd, DSOTM (obvious), David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust, Lou Reed, Transformer, Grateful Dead, American Beauty (I could go on. An entire video could be made not leaving the 1970's) * 1980's- The Clash, London Calling, REM, Reckoning, The Smiths, The Queen is Dead *1990's- Los Lobos, Kiko, Richard Thompson, Rumor and Sigh * 2000's- Sufjan Stevens, Illinois
A very nice analysis, although as a bit older, I'd have included The Who's Tommy, and at least one Pink Floyd. I have thought about how many artists I love have failed at the form . . .
have a look at queen of the murder scene by the warning, its rock/hard rock, dont know if you like that genre, if you do like it then you can marvel at the warning as they were teenagers when they wrote it and the have performed it as a whole live back in 2018/19, some of the tracks are still performed live now, the writing is way beyond their years.

Frank Sinatra possibly had the first concept album. You can tell what the songs are about from his early covers.
Nice presentation, very good idea.
