Katie's Currents #4 - Feat. Chappell Roan
I've just finished reading Bob Dylans book "Chronicles" and he described Dalton as "my favourite singer in the place." (referring to the Wha? and other Greenwich Village coffee houses). This reminded me of your excellent video. For the past week I've been listening to Karen Dalton obsessively. Amazing, amazing singer and song interpreter. I hope she gets more generally recognised for the genius she was.
Happy Sunday Katie. I am a big fan of the GP solo recordings with great contributions from Emmy Lou. In fact she is the nuanced soul & star. I need to follow up on her solo lp's. I have Pieces of the Sky & Last Date, then several her later recordings. Thank you for another detailed & interesting video. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Thanks
I have a rough sounding VHS tape of Gram Parsons and The Fallen Angels recorded in Houston in February of 1973 with Emmylou. It also contains a Clarence White guitar workshop. I also have a CD of a Gram interview and one with Emmylou caught in some drunken moments in a hotel room. I don't play them too often. I'm not that interested. I'll give you a list of these not well known CDs: Gram Parsons--Cosmic American Music--The Rehearsal Tapes 1972 Big Mouth Blues--A Conversation With Gram Parsons Gram Parsons--another side of this life--the lost recordings 1965-1966 Gram Parsons & The Fallen Angels--Live 1973 (with Emmylou) They are sort of buried in my collection from past passions. If you are interested I could send them to you. You could probably put them to better use. But I would need your address. I live in Canada in northern Ontario and I don't like to travel a lot. But I wish you well whatever you decide.
Feel free to email me! I’d love them so much thank you. My email is in my channel info.😊
This is all *great,* as usual... except for Ted Nugent. That guy is so deeply evil that I'll always be a little suspicious of you now, & it kinda' breaks my heart. 😭
I have Gilded Palace Of Sin, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, GP and Grievous Angel. My favourite and only Stones album I enjoy all the way through is Exile, so I'm definitely a Gram fan. And the Elvis connection is sublime. Must check out solo Emmylou. Great informative video - thanks.
Great collection😊
Emmylou has the most beautiful voice.
😊
Thank you for telling the story, had no idea. I`ve listened to the music but not the history of these artists. Thought I had a Gram Parsons but it`s a Graham Parker.😏
😂
Great overview of a fantastic pair! Are you familiar with the duet records from Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison? They released 3 duet albums in the 2010s (“Cheater’s Game”; “Our Year”; and “Beautiful Lie”) that have a similar vibe to the Gram/Emmylou work. They were married for many years, but split a couple of years ago. They had made some appearances on individual tracks on each other’s solo albums, but it wasn’t until “Cheater’s Game” that they recorded a full duets album. Bruce Robison has written a number of huge hits that were recorded by artists like The Chicks and George Strait. He’s a songwriting legend. Kelly Willis is a honey voiced singer that doesn’t have a huge back catalog, but she rarely misses the mark when taking on a song. She has a perfect country voice. Her solo album “What I Deserve” just had a 25th anniversary release on vinyl, and it is a must own classic, in my opinion.
Oh! Thanks for the recommendation
@cordesrecords They are based here in Austin, so I’ve been really fortunate to have been able to see them live individually, and then also together in support of those duet records.
Great stuff Katie. I have a love/hate relationship with Gram Parsons. I love the music he was involved with, but hate the sycophantic adoration the Grampires heap on him at the expense of his talented musical collaborators and contemporaries. A peeve of mine is how the co-writers of some of his most loved songs get airbrushed out of the picture, especially Chris Hillman. In many ways I think Emmylou Harris was more successful than Gram in creating a new blend of country music. The Flying Burritos aside, he seemed far more interested in sticking to the country traditions, Safe At Home, Sweetheart of the Rodeo and his solo records are only progressive because they were longhairs playing traditional country music. Not that it stops them being fabulous records. There's only a couple of Emmylou's albums I haven't got on vinyl. Hard Bargain, because it hasn't had a vinyl release, and Cowgirl's Prayer and All I Intended To Be which are far too expensive these days. Hopefully we'll see reissues. I was pleased to get Stumble Into Grace when it was issued on vinyl for the first time a couple of years back. I wonder why she hasn't recorded an album since 2011? Cheers - Hedley
Hi Hedley. Yes when doing the research I was astounded at the cowrites. Agree some are a bit crazy for unwarranted reason over him 😂. I actually believe if he had lived, Emmylou would still have proven to be the more intelligent performer. I’m probably about 2/3s through my collection of hers. Thanks so much for watching. ❤
Thanks for the information and story behind these two legends. It will inspire me to delve into this music 😊
Please do. They are great
Check out and get Emmy, Dolly, and Linda's Trio record-it's great.
Yes! I have that 😊
Such a sad loss at 26 years old . Who knows what direction he would have gone with music . That GP album & Grievous albums are terrific . Thanks for the recap . Cheers 🎸
Pleased you liked😊
Always great info!
😊
Such a beautiful record. I’ve been tempted to get these Joni titles.
Radibonzical video. Love Karen Dalton, found you from her.
I like your record hauls More porfavor!!
you're really really in bad shape to go from springsteen to zack bryan
In my opinion the greatest songwriter, composer & ... of all time! And pianoplayer too! This VOICE is out of this world! I have all of her albums & many of her incredible live recordings! The new Stockfish is goegeous. Thanks & greetings from Würzburg/Germany. I would buy a record from her, when she spoke the telephonebook from New York!
Couldn't agree more!
I just listened to Mantras for the first time. I'd never heard of Katie Pruitt and I love their music. The songwriting is truly special. Thank you!
Jealous of all the boys.... SO good.
Yesterday, The Digital Gramophone mentioned you as a channel he likes in his Vinyl 2025. Bravo! In eight months you truly established yourself- now getting close to 3k subs! I saw Joni with Jaco P, Micheal Brecker, Pat Metheny on the Court and Spark tour 1974 - a great show like her Miles of Aisles tour.
Oh thanks mate!😊
Great response to the vinyl tag. I introduced Patty Smith's "Horses" in my second to last video. She is a really great woman. Before you look for the video, my videos are in Austrian dialect. But your channel is great! Subscription is out.
I have several One Steps and think they’re great. But I have the new Joni box sets which sound so marvelous that I just can’t justify buying the One Step.
The box sets are amazing😊
Thank you Katie. Your honest & appreciative review of your 3 pressings will be of value to the vc. On the mark, as usual. Cheers
😊
Court and Spark is among the very best Joni Mitchell albums. I have got a limited edition remastered by Steve Hoffman on DCC Compact Classics. It sounds really excellent. Although I have bought a few over the years, I am not a friend of 45 rpms. Depending on the music it can interrupt the album's musical flow. But this is not the important point. Most important is sharing a similar musical taste, i.e. appreciating our favourite artists.
😊 It’s a bit annoying having to get up every 10 minutes !!
I will never buy a MOFI record again due to their duplicity, almost fraudulent behaviour, by passing off digital records as analogue for years. The one steps are from a digital source and are vastly overpriced for a digital record, I’ll stick with Analogue Productions because at least I’m buying an all analogue record. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos, it’s much appreciated.
You’re welcome!
Thanks for your fair appraisal of this release. I have the 2013 release and I’m pretty happy with it. I did also recently purchase a MOFI one-step from Discrepancy Records (ELO - Eldorado) and agree that the packaging for postage was top notch.
😊 but tooo packed!!
Such a great album , thanks for showing . Cheers
Cheers
Tavares did Mamas Little Girl in 1973. Australian Linda George did an even better version in 1974.
😊
Nice post! Honey Cone had a moderate hit in Australia, 1971, 'One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" (great tune), did the Elton 'Madman' come with the booklet insert? (I'm a mad keen EJ collector! - there is a terrific EJ channel on here 'Collecting Elton'), Tavares were a disco / funk band of sorts, had a huge hit here in Australia 'Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel', 1976. Thnx heaps for sharing.😀🤣😀
Aaaah you are full of info. I will check that Elton channel. I collect him as well and Yes! It did come with except. Thanks for watching. 😊
Terrific post, really enjoyed it! Thnx heaps for sharing.😀🤣😀
First time on the net I've ever seen someone really cover Karen Dalton. I own three LPs from Karen. In my category of "The Greatest Singers you've never heard of" along with Karen Dalton is Eva Cassidy. IF you haven't listened to Eva Cassidy's LP "Live At Blues Alley" you should, what a voice. I sometimes feel Etta Jones (not to be confused with Etta James) is also a much earlier voice many of us are not familiar with. Lastly, there is Linda Perhacs, who until recently had never heard of. Keep up the great artists you help bring to the light!
That Gentle Giant is sensational . I love the ‘gimmick’sleeves of the 70’s . Great era in music . Nice pick ups and great additions to your collection
Thank you! 😊
I love Laura Nero since 1977.78...love brown earth..my. favorite song.of hers...people don't give her credit that she deserves
It's exciting discovering bands that totally slipped by us years ago. We're all kids when it comes to great music.
Well said!!
Nice to meet you today. Spun Tim Hardin’s ‘Bird on a Wire’ this afternoon and really enjoyed it. Will dig into his and Joni Mitchell’s work over the next week. Take care. Chris
Ahh! Pleased you connected. Great to meet you as well and so pleased you liked Tim Hardin. Joni is an acquired taste but dig deep and keep going :). 😊
Hello again, what a coincident. I heard Runaways first album yesterday and saw that my favourite artist Kim Fowley had written lots of songs on that album. Shall try or buy Honeycone, your swedish fan.....
Hi Hansel! Honeyconenis such a vibe!
Wow ! Kim Fowley doesn’t come across as a very nice person . Particularly from reading Cherie Currie’s and Joan Jett’s accounts , but each to their own I guess
@@craigsandry6737 Maybe you are right but I didnt know that when he made all those albums he made.....
Most of the lps are 10 dollar records
Yep. And I overpaid for every one 😂😂
@@cordesrecords u did over pay
Nice setup, thanks for sharing Could you someday show some of your books? Any books about bands?
The Free World can say good bye to "The Voice of America" Trump is going to end it forever.
😢
This is about music, not politics!
@@Mark-qz2nu I think you might should understand the history of music, The Voice of America and Politics a little better. IF you did you might even understand music and musicians a lot better as well. Of course we could ban all music about politics like many countries have done in the past, IF NOT FOR VOA. I also suggest you listen to any of the several Spotify Playlists "Political Songs" starting with Green Day's "American Idiot" before Trump Bans them all.
Pretty sure I bid against you on the gentle giant 😂
Aaah sorry mate!!
Gentle Giant is a big favorite of mine, great album there! The Savoy Brown is a very cool score as well. Love "Tell Mama" and their version of "Wang Dang Doodle."
Yeah super happy with both those albums. I would likely have never picked them up if it wasn’t for the auction. Learning all the time.
Not to mention that Savoy Brown were part of the same British blues movement that spawned The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.
Good catch - congratulations! May I suggest to take the covers out of the outer sleeves when you present the records. YT is a visual medium and your records will be presented much better without reflections and glare from the outer sleeves. Just for your consideration 🙂 I'll look forward to your next videos 👍
Excellent point. Thanks
That inner sleeve Tavares is from the group that did Disco Inferno.🥵
Oh thanks. I hadn’t even looked that up! 😂
@@cordesrecords Sorry it was the Trammps that did Disco Inferno. I got them mixed up.🥴
Tavares had a big hit on Capitol in the 70's with "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" and also appeared on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack covering the Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman". This was a wonderful video Kate. Some wonderful finds including the Savoy Brown LP. I have an original Aussie "Runaways" debut LP. A curious thing occurred after you name checked Joan Jett, in that a commercial for Jim Beam popped up with Joan's "Bad Reputation" playing during it. Lol. Cheers 👍😊
What a wonderful addition to your collection to have these unique titles. Very well played.👍
😊
Laura Nyro is brillant. Most female singer-songwriters stand on her shoulders. Laura Nyro Tress Of The Ages: Live In Japan is her finest LP. It is her and a piano. There is no place to hide. Her talent is prodigious, especially on this LP. No wonder why so many artists revere her to this day. She was truly beyond her time.
Looks like some awesome pickups from a cool and historic collection. I need to check out that Tim Hardin album for sure.
It’s beautiful
Wonderful copy of "Street Corner Talking". I don't have a decent copy of this album in my collection yet, so "All I Can Do Is Cry"...😊
😂
Hi Katie! You obviously had a lot of fun acquiring these records. Afterall, we enjoy music & this wonderful hobby. That said the emotional impact of the music is always present. Well done!
Thanks 🙏
Fantastic video Katie. I've seen that Cunningham Bird LP around, but I had no idea it was a track by track version of Buckingham Nicks - I'm streaming it now and it's wonderful! Thanks for the info!
Oh fantastic! Pleased you now know.
