For today's video, we'll be checking out the sequel to ToeJam and Earl, one of the quirkiest and most original games for the Mega Drive. This sequel is a departure from the original's Rogue-like, dungeon-crawling affair, instead opting for a more traditional platforming/adventure format.
Following the duo's escape from Earth at the end of the first game, they arrive back on their home planet of Funkotron, only to discover that a bunch of pesky humans stowed away on their ship. The interlopers are now causing all kinds of havoc for the local residents, so TJ and Earl must round them up and ship them back home.
To make matters worse, the Earthlings have scared the elusive Funkopotamus, source of all the planet's funk, into hiding. The only way to ensure the planet stays funky is to round up a bunch of his favourite things in an attempt to coax him out of the Funk Dimension.
In order to capture the Earthlings ToeJam and Earl are equipped with an unlimited supply of special power jars. Hitting an Earthling with a successive stream of jars will trap them inside, allowing them to be picked up. It's possible to find more powerful Super Jars, which will trap any human in a single hit; these are extremely limited and should be used sparingly.
Each level is full of trees, bushes and other nooks and crannies that can be searched for power-ups, as well as uncovering some of the more devious Earthlings. Be aware that many of these places hide bowling balls, trash cans and other heavy objects that will temporarily stun our heroes, so be sure to get out of the way in time.
Pressing the Start button brings up the powers menu, allowing TJ and Earl to perform a variety of special moves. The Funk Scan can be used to locate hidden objects and secrets, whilst the Panic mode and FuncVac are great for rounding up large numbers of Earthlings in a short amount of time.
Whilst on their adventures, TJ and Earl will encounter many of the friends, all whom will try to assist our heroes in their quest, as well as requiring assistance from time to time. I particularly enjoyed the way that you continue to encounter these characters throughout the whole game as it actually makes the world feel more alive and engaging.
Whilst most platform games tend to have a few secret areas per level, you can't go more than a couple of metres without stumbling into a hidden item or secret area in this game. The Funk Scan is really useful for locating many of these, but there are plenty of fake walls and hidden spots that are less easy to spot.
Perhaps the the most devious (and rewarding) of these secret areas are the Hyperfunk Zones. Each zone is an on-rails section where the player must collect presents and bonus items in a race against the clock. The zones are littered with barriers that slow you down, as well as portals that will eject you from the level completely. It will take plenty of patience, dedication and quick reflexes to beat the zones. persevere, and you'll be awarded unlimited Super Jars for your efforts.
One of the best things about the game, in my opinion is the presentation. From the background/level art, to the brilliant character sprites, the game's visuals still hold up well today.
As for the audio, the sound effects are also top-notch, especially the digitised speech samples used for most of the Earthlings. Music is pretty decent too, focusing on funky beats and rhythms featuring some cool drum samples.
I remember loving this game back in the day, and I was pleased to find it just as much fun to play today. With 17 huge levels to explore, excellent graphics and 2-player cooperative game modes, ToeJam and Earl 2 is a great platforming experience and comes highly recommended!

Who else used to keep ringing the doorbells to annoy everyone?
The world is a different place now, I'd do anything to go back to this time...
Me too buddy. That was my happiest time of life. Life from 3 years old to 12 was amazing 🥰🥰🥰
@@larica208 I was just playing it on the Genesis collection on my Xbox series x. You got little girls kicking you in the knee to kill you lucky for me I die but I kept the password. 😂💯
I’m having flashbacks to memories I didn’t know I had.
seriously omfg lmao
I love it to bits 😁 🐾
I'm now 32 and still jamming to them beats lol.
44 same!
55!!111
I once had the Rocket Rap pop in my head during school. It was stuck in my head all day and as soon as I got home I sat down and played the game to hear it again.
@@PanicByNumbersSo cool I love Me and bro he is bad how to cal agin
More like 32X what is it called I hate humans they are mean
I loved this game as a whole, and all the content and minigames within. One of my favorite parts was locating all of Lamont's favorite items hidden throughout the levels.
Best looking area in the game has to be the flower garden with Saturn like planet in the background, amazing aesthetic.
The major gripe this game has is a real lack of Textures, there is things like 'Underworld ' but that is rarely used. Most of the overworld and stages are almost identical in look and play, but there is quite a fair whack of gameplay variety to make up for it and tons of secret areas so 100 % is a bit tricky and as you can see can take as long as 5-6 hours to do so it has a hefty run time for an early 90s game.
fair assessment
Very funny, I love dthe humor and context of that style of sound in a unique game. That clear soundeffects and voices show the real job well done on the Genesis hardware. Its feels so good play with that soundtrack.
It's a fun game - some thought it was a backward step over the original, but I really enjoyed it 🙂
I am in the minority because I find this one way deeper than the original and overall better. I had both as a kid, and this one stuck with me much longer. It may be another platformer in a sea of platform era at the time, and it wasn’t as unique as the rogue-like original, but damn is it a fun game. It had so many secrets. The soundtrack is killer. Its sense of humor was silly and innocuous but also somewhat bizarre at the same time. I love how the levels troll you.
We used to spend so much time on the "trampoline" doing jumps and flips. And the Simon says style dancing. (Boom Shaka Clap)
My childhood and still own these today 😎
I own Toejam, Toejam panic for funky and 3 that’s what I have
damn, remember this from my early childhood. I got old lol.
I so miss this game. I lost my dad not long after he bought me it,he loved it and Mario and Sonic
@my chunky jordi Aw! I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I still remenber my parents gifting me a Sega Genesis, when I was around 8, with Sonic. I was a lucky kid. I loved Toejam & Earl too - the fun adventures and funky music are iconic. 💕
Sorry for your loss 😔
A living legend in the Hyperfunk Zone, despite some mistakes at the end. I could never get past the second one.
He finished it out completely, pretty funny...
I forgot I looked this up almost a year, and found the comment again...
What the...
I’ve never seen such hyper funk zone skills
saw this comment as he flew thru effortlessly... was impressed
On my 13th birthday, my childhood best friend came over for my birthday and he and I was hooked playing this game.🤣🤣🤣
When playing this back in the day, I always played as Earl
I am so glad this is here. Just having it on while I work is great. Makes me wanna play so bad though!!! Also, dang you are good at the Hyperfunk Zone
I haven't seen this literally for almost 2 decades and still remember it so well it scares me. We used to play this here in Germany, me, my sister and my cousin. We kinda shared 1 SEGA that we movedfrom houshold to household, it remained there where the last sleepover was. The hours we played this game. Never been into gaming afterwards, this and Super Mario Land 2 on Gameboy can be considered as my gaming career haha.
so hard for me to finally found this game name. At the end, I tried to google "sega genesis two friends" and I saw in google picture someone posted the action figure of toejam and earl and that's how I ended up here. So nice to nostalgic to this game, I dunno this game is very memorable in my childhood memories. :)
Love this game. My first console and first game many laughs.
I’m 49 years old and I still love this game played this game when I was 10 now I’m 40.
Are you 40, or 49?
Tell us!
So now that you’re 49, you’re 40?
dude is two ages at once... incredible
As a kid I didn’t never get the point of this game but I played the hell out of it
This game was fantastic.
This Game always gives me some melancholic vibe. Loved it back in the day. I want a new TJ&E game like this, as a 2D Plattformer!
The track "ode to sharla" is still my favorite 😊
That was a marvelous playthrough. Granted, it took me a lot of on-and-off viewing, but I finally managed to get to the end. You even got the perfect ending.
Got the nostalgia buzz from the music alone
Your hyperfunk skills are freaking incredible 😆👌
Level 1-9 =chaotic
Level 10-12= calm
Just my feelings so far until I reach level 18
I'll never understand why the first toejam & earl got a remaster and not panic on funkotron. such a bummer.
Patrick StarFish is a straight knock off of Earl. Even bikini bottom looks TJ and Earl-ish
Now that you say it....
Nothing beats the old sega mega drive games. This one was a little strange to me though.
years before spongebob and patrick were capturing aliens
ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron Longplay (Mega Drive/Genesis) [60 FPS]: Help TJ and Earl rid Funkotron of pesky Earthlings in this great platform-adventure game!
Read the video description for my review!
Is this a rom?, On the rom there is a ledge that is too high to jump to
I always loved when it would play Hallelujah when you got an extra life.
Best sega game ever
Programming masterclass.
I remember playing this game when I was young kid. I was okay at playing it. As I grew up, I came back to it and I was able to do better.
You make this game look easy. You put me to shame
Thanks to my cousin i remembered this game i played for so long in my mega drive. Now im here watching cause i couldnt finish it back when i was young.
I loved this game so much but I sucked at it. I could never get close to beating it. Great playthrough!
It took me 30 Years to realize you can jump higher, when you crouch and jump...wow...
Philipp Post lol
It says it, if you read the sign posts in the first level.
Ahh the funkotronian moon was my favourite level!
So many laughs with this game, I didnt even care where I was going as long as it was entertaining 😂😂❤

When I was a kid, I thought they were saying “Paper Funk Time”.
This was a good game
People who say SNES has better sound have never played this game.
Great Gameplay😍
LOVE this game.
I remember pronouncing this as picnic idk why memories
Has anyone else played the room and there's this ledge that is too.high and imppssoble to progress any further????
Nope? I've beaten this game a ton, seen every nook and cranny, found every single secret door - never seen that! You must be missing something invisible. :)
@@TheAskTrixieChannel I finally figured it out! I never knew that if you hold down while jumping that you jump much higher
Damnnnn the music so 🔥🔥🔥
I miss this game
Used to love this game my favourite levels where 2,3,4,5,7,9,10,13 and 15

One of my favourite Mega Drive game
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
I spent so much time between this game and earthworm Jim and comix zone.
That was funny the ghost cow caught you off guard. But you came back the boogie boogies are jobbers. 😎🤣
2:15 are definitive “oh c##p!” Expressions!
This game is so superior to the much lauded original yet I don't know a single other person who has played it, let alone heard of it
How did u pass a hyperfunk zone so clear??? 50:46
Funk funk funk fufunk it
This game is so funky
Funk is a power in the Game… They live on Funk lol
The humans used to scare me when I was little kid lol.
I'll have to watch through this and see if you found the Trixie ("slower timers") I missed...
Boom Shaka clap
5 hours long?! Mega Drive?
1:50 Figaroooo.. Figarooooo
Ahahahahahahaha!
Gotta love the Earthlings ;D
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays you mean demicrats smh
Lololol
You are good at this game I played this as a kid I couldn't get past the second board lol😅 plus if I'm not mistaken I don't think you could save this game so props on you man for beating this whole game without saving nice bro
No saves on the original version, but there were passwords after each level. But there’s save states in the Sega Classic collection edition, which is cool to be able to play on switch etc.
@@Wil_Dsense yeah I played the original sage and I couldn't get past the three levels
Omg I loved this game so much I spent hours on this on the weekends. My parents rented it from Block buster and eventually I went to KB toystore and baught it. My dad was pissed I spent my money I had saved mowing lawns and recycling cans. I kept good grades in school. my mom told him to shut the hell up and leave me alone
Lamont is so cute😍
Whatever happened to colorful platformers like this? So much amazing absurdity without being bogged down by trying to tell some "edgy" narrative?
So many memories 😢
Hyper funk zone = Sonic in a nutshell.
I only bought the Sega Genesis Classics collection on my Switch just for Toejam & Earl, Toejam & Earl 2: PoF, Ristar and Dynamite Headdy because I have no other way to play those games besides the Switch without spending a lot money.
1:20:45 Daffy Duck what is he doing here?
Do you figure this game belongs to the metroidvania genre?
Yeeeeeah, buddy!
Lewanda was a baddie. Once you go red, it’s in your head. Hahaha
Ha ha i love pasture bedtime ha ha. Late 30's me just getting the witty wordplay 😶😄😀😁
Best 💔
This here is a Gem, the one and only toejam and earl that was actually good
The original Avatar film (james cameron) game
Panic on Funkotron was the better game imo
This was always the better of the two Toejam and Earl games, easily. The gameplay just had a lot more going on, and the graphics are a whole different level to the first one, the first one could probably have been done on an NES. But this one couldn't
I don't know how the hell people play through the hyper funk zone either back in the 90's nor on modern days, it's so hard even when using reverse features.
@4:00
пипец, очень долгая и сложная игра.
Earthlings are still just as annoying
This is awful
Ironically now the earthing are far more tolerable than actual earthings now lol 😅
