I remember in early-mid 2000's I actually went on the TJ&E 3 website on clicked on Contact Us. I actually emailed the website saying how much I liked the series but was also asking if there was another sequel in development as some years went by. Greg Johnson actually emailed me back thanking me for the email but also stated that due to poor sales on the 3rd one it would be hard to find a publisher and development money. I was very saddened by this and replied that I would fund the game myself (I was 12) lol But now finally we have a remake of the first one

TJ&E3 remains my favorite in the franchise. The recent game most definitely offers up some fun times, but the controllability and 60fps gameplay (plus some sweet looking Gen 6 visuals) put it above the others.

I picked up the new game and can definitely vouch: If you liked the original TJ&E, you'll like it too. It really is a modernized take on the original game, but with loads of QOL improvements everywhere. (And far less tedious wandering around while nothing whatsoever is happening.) Although it may be a hard sell for anyone not already familiar with the franchise, since it is such an oddball mashup of (lite) roguelike and platformer.

My first exposure to Toejam and Earl was actually panic on funkitron. My brother and I had it for our Sega Genesis and loved it. We had no idea there was a first until YEARS later in my late teens. When we went back and played the original on roms, we were so thrown off by the gameplay. We liked it a lot but we just didn't know what to make of it. Within only the last few months have gotten my nephew (just turned 11) to play the original Toejam and Earl and Panic on Funkitron with me and I am so happy to report these games have held up to the test of time. My nephew LOVES them both and I still think the original is such a fun and unique game and panic on funkitron still hold up as a very solid 2 player co-op side scroller. And it's a damn shame how under-rated TJ and Earl 3 is. That's actually one that my brother and I picked up when I was a teenager and MAN that game has sooooo much personality. It's also a great mix of the first two game. Truly an uncharted hidden gem in the series

The secret to injecting your character with ‘tude is to also add a heaping handful of humble and a dash of self-deprocating humor. For example… During the intro video, Earl flicking his eyelashes when Toejam calls him out for crashing the ship. So charming.

I had so much fun with the first game. Me and my brother used to play it alot. One day I was just trying to find those secret paths that appear when u come close borders, but I ended jumping a little gap, I mean, I should have been able to jump it, if it wasn´t for a scared sant claus on jetpack that my bother spotted and flew right on front of me, making me hit santa and fall to the previus lvl. I remember laughing like half hour because of this. For my surprise and joy, I downloaded the back on the groove game, from Steam, and play it with my 4 year old son. He likes it and I remember the good old times.

I can honestly say as far as game creators go Greg Johnson is the absolute best. I backed 'back in the groove' on Kickstarter going back a few years ago. Whilst it was running I thought I'd be cheeky and ask him, if I sent him my copy of TJ&E and a postal order for him to send it back, he was happy to do that for me.
Months passed and I asked if he had received my copy of the game. He said he hadn't and it turned out that it had been lost in the post. :(
Being the absolute legend that Greg is, he grabbed a copy from his house signed it and shipped it to me, all from his own pocket!
It sits at the top of my cabernet in my front room and is my pride and joy.

Wow. This guy made "Starflight". You could make a hobby out of playing that game. I remember people had forums up on their bulletin boards specifically for hobbyists who were playing it. It came with this huge poster that was a map of the universe that you could tack on your wall and many of us did. It often required you to keep a notebook at your side to keep track of your travels and keep track of planets and worlds that you discovered. It was very much the "Elite" of it's day. I remember having a binder full of graph paper and notes set up specifically playing this game and having the map for it hanging on the wall above my computer. You would never see this kind of stuff with today's gaming. There was no hand holding. There was no on-screen pop-ups telling you where to go or what to do. You just flew where you wanted. Discovered what you found. Traded with or attacked who you wanted. Talked with who you wanted. it was a great game that was way ahead of it's time. It pushed my C64 to it's limits, I can tell you that. And that "Adventure Contruction Set" that he helped design on the C64 was nothing to sneeze at either. That, to this day, is one of the best, and most versitile little RPG programs that I've ever played with. And it does one thing that I've never seen any other RPG construction set ever do. Multiplayer. Nothing has done that. And it has features that are still lacking in the more advanced RPG game making crap we have today.

  • @ravagingwolverine

I remember seeing the game featured on some of the US adverts in 1991 before I had the system and I was definitely interested. I didn't get the game in the batch I got with the machine, but it would be one of the first rentals I would try for the Genesis. And it ended up being way more fun than I was expecting it to be. I bought it a bit later when I could buy a new game. It might have been the first Genesis game I got after that first Christmas batch. I ended up having to re-buy the game in the late 90s after my copy got "lost". It was always one of my favorite games on the system, so I had to buy another. I had a friend by several years ago to introduce him to the game in a co-op session and it went over well. I can understand why some people don't like the game. The main characters are nearly helpless and the game is basically a scavenger hunt. I shouldn't even like it, but it works well and I still think it's great fun. Good to see this covered and learn the story behind the game.

The only issue I can think of with Starflight is, if you get it off GOG, because it is the original edition, make sure to MOVE YOUR SAVES. If you do not, it is programmed to rewrite its own code with changes to the galaxy and, as such, if you die, the game is bricked. You'll have to reinstall and, in the day, the disk and with it the entire game, would be bunk.

T&E 2 was one of the first megadrive games I ever played, and for that reason it stuck with me. The side-scrolling platform format made sense to me, as a fan of Sonic and Mario games. I can see how the first stands out for originality, but the side-scroller had a lot more colour and detail, and T&J's characters came to life more.
I prefer the second. Never got round to the later, 3D titles

I was so excited to play TJ&E3 when I first got my xbox. I put it in the tray, ready to play, and everything went fubar. Drive chewed the disk so bad that the tray couldn't even open and I had to mail the whole xbox in for repair to avoid voiding the warranty. The disk was beyond unplayable after that and I never got another copy.

I think that might be because Toejam and Earl aren't gonna give a damn what you think of them while characters like bubsy spout catchphrases constantly and see which one makes you chuckle out of pity, Toejam and Earl only wanna fly by earth and blast funky ass music.

So one day in 1994 aged 10 i was playing Toejam and Earl 1 with my friend. My brother returned from work at Electronics Boutique in Sunderland with his friend and handed me the cartridge Toejam and Earl 2! Most random moment in the 90's for me.

  • @Mephilis78
    @Mephilis78 8 месяцев назад

My grandma used to play Toejam and Earl with me all the time when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure she only got the game because the name "Earl" was in the title. That happens to be my Grandpa's name, and mine, subsequently. Idk when they actually got it, but probably around 93 or 94, most likely.
Since she got me hooked on it, I played all of the sequels. I can say from personal experience that T&J 2 was very disappointing. Not bad, but not what I wanted either. I played it, but I would end up still going back to the first one.
Now I actually have fond memories of the third game. Idk about other fans, but I loved it, and I loved that OG Xbox.
The kickstarter game is a really good remake. Oddly enough, I don't feel like the music has the same soul to it. Idk why, but when I listen to the OST from the first game, you can hear that the composer was having a great time. You can hear the 16 bit versions of the different instruments clearly. The melodies are good, the rhythym is great, and the fills are actually pretty brilliant. Especially the bass fills. I don't get that vibe from the kickstarter remake. It's a real band, but it doesn't sound like a band filled with musicians showing off their talents, which is what that original soundtrack is trying to simulate. Just imagine if the kickstarter game had Davie504 playing Bass... Then you'll understand what I mean.

I will follow on to this, when we got Panic on Funkotron, we were a little miffed. But in the end, the whole experience, the characters stuck. It took a long time to beat the game compared to everything else we had. It honestly was kinda sick.

This was a fantastic video! Granted, I very much enjoy all your videos, but this one hits home with a game I very much enjoy.
I was introduced to the sequel first ages ago at a friend's home when I was young, and while I like it, I came into contact with the first awhile later and I find myself agreeing that the first was better, BUT the sequel was a good change of pace that was still well made and fun to play in it's own right.
I am insanely happy to find out that there is a 4th entry and a very fun looking remake of the first game, and to boot, as I found out on the official website, it's coming to the Switch! A console I just bought recently!
Thanks very much for this video and letting us fans know about the fun history of this series, AND it's current entry!
