TOEJAM AND EARL! Funk yeah! This was my jam growing up, easily in my top 10 favourite games of all time (although I do confess that nostalgia definitely plays a factor there). The only other game that comes close on the Genesis is Shadowrun.
As great as ToeJam & Earl is, it’s a shame that even obscure (well, I’m sure these games are popular in their own right, but underrated when compared to Sonic & Nintendo, mainly Mario) games like the TJ&E games have more recognition than games that were SUPPOSED to be main Pac-Man games when there really hasn’t been a lot (the Pac-Man World games). Yep, that’s right. Pac-Man is a video game that while some people are aware that it is a franchise, people normally only think of the franchise as Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (to a lesser extent), Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures and that’s pretty much it. I guess you can say that like Jr. Pac-Man, Pac-Man World 1 & 2, while under-popularized in general, have their (avid) viewers (I’m one of them so if TJ&E could get a new game as of recently, then I can’t wait for an N-Sane/Reignited Trilogy-esque remaster of the PMW franchise including a complete version of Pac-Man Adventures/Pac-Man World 3!), but as for every other Pac-Man game, on the other hand, they really, REALLY deserve a lot more popularity.
This was my dad’s favorite game. I played it all the time with him when they released it on the Wii shop. Before I went off to college I made sure we beat the game before I left. Definitely a classic I like going back to when I visit my dad.

Jirard struggling to get through the script without laughing just made my day lmao, that was so pure and genuine. Also, anyone else notice how the tune playing during the Chill-pletionist section is literally just Stickerbrush Symphony?
Still in my top ten of all time. I remember renting this as a kid and loving it because of just how weird and offbeat it was...two hip-hop aliens looking for parts of their ship on floating lumps of 'Earth' while being menaced by things like devils, mad dentists, and an ice cream truck. Then they dance with Hula girls, get drunk off rootbeer, and find mystery boxes that can insta-kill if you don't pay money to a guy dressed in a carrot suit who can tell you what's inside. So weird...but so fun (and quite funny too). Thank you for this review.
My mom and I would play the OG Toejam & Earl. It was one of the few games she would play (the others being Bubble Bobble and Zombies Ate My Neighbors). This game is so damn fun and I was super excited when a remake/sequel came out on the Switch a few years back. My kids and I have beaten the new version a couple of times now…but nothing compares to the OG version!
I had this game as a kid. Got my mega drive at 5 years old with toe jam and earl, sonic, altered beast, super hang on, fantasia and castle of illusion. Good times!

I played through this with my bestie this past summer. It was a fun and stressful afternoon avoiding ice cream trucks and other enemies popping up and chasing me playing as Earl.
yeah sadly this game flew under a lot of peoples radar, which is a shame, damn shame even, as it's a rare experience that you'd get from playing on a console back in the day.
Great minds think alike on the voice over for a 90's instruction manual bit! We did a very similar thing for a video on Sonic 1 on my channel. Alex and Jake should have a 90's off to see who wins the title of Freshest!

This game is indeed an excellent chill experience. I played this game so much with my brothers growing up. Finding “Present Island” and Level 0 as a kid was a cool experience. I remember after getting a few levels up accidentally falling back down to the first level. Out of curiosity, we tried using our newly found presents to explore the vast waters (and also drowning, checking the top left and bottom right corners). Such a great reward for exploration. Still one of my favorites for the system.

Absolutely adore this game. This was my childhood game I used to play with my neighbour waaaaay back when. The game is so fun in its own right but playing with a friend makes this a thousand times more bogusly fun. You can really jam out! Thank you for reviewing this game!
I never got very far, and I always thought the game was just "ok." But, that soundtrack... I would turn the game on just to let is sit and play the music. Funk yeah. I think this game has my favorite soundtrack.
yea not doin this co-op was shame., its such a revolutionary co-op game for the time that i don't think they were able to replicate again for years. cheers to the patrons, great choice
Love seeing this game in the spotlight - it was one of my favorites back in the days of the Genesis. Oddly, though, I never made the connection of it as a roguelike - at that time, I think I'd just defined the genre by 'ascii-based random adventure games on computer'. Also, that funk remix of Stickerbrush Symphony is amazing. I want that song...
Can confirm that this game is 100% accessible for basically any age. I used to play it with my younger brother in elementary school, we would sometimes start with the intention of collecting all the ship pieces but would quickly get distracted opening the gifts and just having fun often going back and forth between levels and I dont think we ever made it past level 10 together but it is still a game I remember having some of the most fun playing in my childhood.
best soundtrack on the genesis. Funk music is and will always be the greatest genre, accesbile to everyone of all ages. its just about having fun dancing and feeling good, which toejam and earl are about. the remake is the best way to play this game but the original holds a special place for me
boy 30 years ago I got this game and played the heck out of it with my sister... it took us 2 years to finally beat the game in the random world mode back in the day, and we still play TJ&E whenever she comes to visit.. we're actually playing the Back in the Groove in the recent years whenever we get together, but it's nostalgic anyways!
I'm actually glad you mentioned how Roguelikes started as I honestly didn't know. Didn't seem as obvious as what a Metroidvania is for example. At least to me.
I played this on the genesis back in the day but didn't understand it, since as you say I saw expecting a platformer. How theres a remaster version on steam, it's pretty good, played it a few months ago but didn't finish it. Coop totally recommended.
Both this and the sequel, Panic on Funkotron are tied as my fave games of all time. Been a fan since day one. Many years later, I was elated to find out that Mac Culkin is a huge fan as well, especially considering he was born two days after me. I don't know the guy irl but always found that to be an awesome coincidence. Anyone who almost shares a birthday with me and loves TJ&E is awesome. True story: around 2000 or 2001, I used to email the creators on the old website about ideas I had for any potential future sequels. Typical stuff a fan might do. They'd reply back. Very awesome people. They said they liked my ideas but said they were too far into the development of TJ&E III: Mission to Earth to add anything. Oh well. I tried!
I’m SO GLAD you got to this game! ToeJam & Earl remains to this day one of my Top 3 Favorite Games of All-Time, in front of Battletoads Arcade and behind Earthworm Jim 2 on SEGA Saturn! Hell, as I type this comment, I’m currently WEARING a ToeJam & Earl T-Shirt I got for backing the 4th Installment on Kickstarter! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND playing with a Player 2 if and when you get the chance! This is a game I’ve played at least once with siblings, cousins and friends alike! While some look at me like I should get my head examined (looking at you, Alison!), the latter two really enjoyed the game’s chill vibe and co-op features!
I am so excited to see you play this game I grew up playing it and I remember the first time I saw the ending of the game. I wanted to waste so much time looking at all the end game details and try to interact with everyone. I never thought to call it a roguelike though thinking about it the game clearly is I just knew randomizing the levels was an option and there was an option for it to be the same each time too. Then of course there is the music listening option lol
As you mentioned at the beginning of the video, I never owned this game growing up, but we rented it from our local video store all of the time. A simple way to dramatically increase the difficulty of this game is make the carrot guy off limits. Then you have to take the risk of identifying the presents on your own, and you will almost always get the randomizer, which means you will have to re-identify presents throughout the game.
I'll also add that I also loved Toe Jam and Earl 2. Granted, it's a platformer instead of a roguelike, but it is a great - and difficult - platformer. It has a ton of exploration and secrets and is just as quirky as the first game. It also had arguable the best graphics of any Sega Genesis game.
I grew up with playing Panic on Funkitron with my brother when I visited my grandmother. That game doesn't get much love but I really enjoyed it, I played it again maybe 5 years ago and it was still awesome.
Wow, next, some classic Sci fi RPG on the genesis like buck rodges and the countdown to doomsday. Trust me, this 80/90 game has more in it than some modern RPG
I have owned a copy of ToeJam & Earl since I was a little kid. Used to play it all the time as well as Panic on Funkatron. It was really fun playing around with cheat codes on this game using a Game Shark.
Absolutely love this game. But if you ever do play Ecco the Dolphin, you might be surprised by it too. I was drawn to it because I thought the environments were gorgeous. My friends all made fun of me for playing what they thought was a girly dolphin game. But just like you were surprised that TJ&E is a Roguelike, you might also not know that Ecco is a sci-fi horror game.
"Awww, what a girly little game about dolphins, hahahaha, what's next, are you gonna twirl in your toot- OooooooOOOOHHHH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT- WHAT WAS THAT H.R. HORRORSHOW- TURN IT OFF- TURN THE CONSOLE OFF-"
@@GaliMercury At the risk of spoiling a 30-year-old game, those trilobites in the second half, that swarm you out of nowhere, not to mention the auto scroll levels with aliens, definitely put the fear into me also. Absolutely adore this game. This was my childhood game I used to play with my neighbour waaaaay back when. The game is so fun in its own right but playing with a friend makes this a thousand times more bogusly fun. You can really jam out! Thank you for reviewing this game!
I remember making my dad play and complete Toejam and Earl 3 with me as a little kid.
I never got very far, and I always thought the game was just "ok." But, that soundtrack... I would turn the game on just to let is sit and play the music. Funk yeah. I think this game has my favorite soundtrack.
Awesome. I love this game. Thanks for playing this.
Finally a completions episode that I actually want to watcb!!!
One of my all-time favorites!
Wow, I didn't even know about that Level 0. That's a really cool secret, and it let's you resume progress without wasting too much time!
Used to play this all the time as a kid, so awesome.
I still love this intro!
Imagine playing this game while high.
yea not doin this co-op was shame., its such a revolutionary co-op game for the time that i don't think they were able to replicate again for years. cheers to the patrons, great choice
What a nostalgia trip. Me and my sister would play this together all the time. That dentist laugh when he drills you still haunts my dreams.
This game remains to me one of those oddballs of the time that you would never expect to ever return again... and then they brought it back.
Ive always loved this weird ass adventure. What a classic.
So many great memories of playing this back in the day. Jammin!
Earl looks badass with a beard!
best soundtrack on the genesis. Funk music is and will always be the greatest genre, accesbile to everyone of all ages. its just about having fun dancing and feeling good, which toejam and earl are about. the remake is the best way to play this game but the original holds a special place for me
One of the reasons I play bass, is because of this game. The memorieees!
I remember seeing this game in the movie store oh god I am old this should be a great memory trip for me
Thank you for doing this game. I've loved it since it's release 🙂
Somehow I never thought of Toejam and Earl as a roguelike but it definitely is. Maybe it was the cheerful aestethic and the chill vibes?
I have sung the toe jam and earl songs to all of my kids as lullabys. Funky beats that stick in your brain for 20 years!
boy 30 years ago I got this game and played the heck out of it with my sister... it took us 2 years to finally beat the game in the random world mode back in the day, and we still play TJ&E whenever she comes to visit.. we're actually playing the Back in the Groove in the recent years whenever we get together, but it's nostalgic anyways!
I'm actually glad you mentioned how Roguelikes started as I honestly didn't know. Didn't seem as obvious as what a Metroidvania is for example. At least to me.
LETS GO!!! TOEJAM AND EARL HELL YEAH
Love the Toajam & Earl remix of Stickerbrush Symphony
Bruh this and, in panic on funkotron, were my 2 favorite games as a child
I played this on the genesis back in the day but didn't understand it, since as you say I saw expecting a platformer.
How theres a remaster version on steam, it's pretty good, played it a few months ago but didn't finish it.
Coop totally recommended.
I hope the completionist keeps on...completing...games. I wanna make a game one day, and I hope he, and many other people, could play it.
I wanna make my game a platformer.
Loved this game as a kid. Guess it's time to give it a replay.
the funkiest episode yet!
It’s wild that I don’t remember anything about this game but I remember the names and exactly what these characters look like from my childhood
this game takes place on the planet that Poochie was sent back to
I am so excited to see you play this game I grew up playing it and I remember the first time I saw the ending of the game. I wanted to waste so much time looking at all the end game details and try to interact with everyone. I never thought to call it a roguelike though thinking about it the game clearly is I just knew randomizing the levels was an option and there was an option for it to be the same each time too. Then of course there is the music listening option lol
Your patrons are genius. This game is incredible!
I"m a simple man, I see Toejam and Earl and i like and click
Fun fact: the “TJ” on ToeJam’s medallion actually stands for “Trader Joe’s.”
@mario mash band Thumbs down to that trash. Booooooooo!
@toxic avenger ToeJam told me.
Played this on the megadrive with my older bro, such good memories. Loved the funky music and gameplay!
HORRORSHOW- TURN IT OFF- TURN THE CONSOLE OFF-"
@UmiKaru I was 12. It was definitely a hard game, but I think I finished it in about 10 days.
@@GaliMercury At the risk of spoiling a 30-year-old game, those trilobites in the second half, that swarm you out of nowhere, not to mention the auto scroll levels with aliens, definitely put the fear into me also. I was also into time travel in general at the time. Anyway, it was absolutely not a kids' game.
I'm very nostalgic for Toejam and Earl. I played as kid N recently on PlayStation 4. Thanks for the episode
My favorite Genesis game!
