I had a laminectomy of L1 - L5 for my spinal stenosis in 1998 at age 45. I had to go through 10 sessions of PT with electro stimulation. After only 8 sessions, the pain got worse, especially the shooting pain down my legs and a foot drop. Finally, my insurance approved an MRI which revealed the extent of my stenosis. The surgery got me up and moving, and back to work in only two weeks. I had a top notch spine surgeon, and I am still going strong nearly 25 years later. In my case, surgery was the only option.
I can relate. I went through ten years of worsening back and leg pain. Partially because I doubted surgical improvement. I tried to exercise my way out of the pain with Yoga, McGill exercises and PT. Finally, after visiting five surgeons, I found one I trusted. After an L2-L5 laminectomy, my leg pain was resolved. I still have generalized lower back pain, but I’m much better than I was.
Just started treating mine! Not a surgery candidate thankfully. Starting a rehab program with PT/OT/BH. Thanks for the great timing of this video and your others!
You're doing great bob. The brain is a terrible maze, but you are getting through it. Thank you for doing what you've done and what you're going to do!
I have serious spinal stenosis of both the nerve outlets and the spinal canal plus a bulging disc in the same place. I’ve tried all sorts of treatments with no success until my orthopedist recently did preliminary procedures on both sides of L4&5 to see if a rhizotomy would be of help. I hope and pray that it will work because I’ve had to partially or completely curtail activities that I love because of the excruciating pain. I’m a professional cellist and haven’t been able to play my cello for more than 5-10 minutes at a time for some time. Spinal Stenosis has made it difficult to sit for more than 5-10 minutes without pain which has affected the ability to travel, go to concerts or the movies and to stand for any length of time no matter how short. Laying down is the only position that isn’t guaranteed to make me hurt. 😞
It's so true! Doctors often use these terms that generate fear in patients. Explaining the diagnosis and treatment options really helps alleviate that anxiety
I can’t stand that long without having to rest up. Also walking gives me a pain in my right leg. If I stop and rest it goes away. I think this stenosis is what I have. I seem to remember seeing that word on an X-ray or mri. Thanks for the exercises.
Just wanted to let you know I bought your stretch strap thru Amazon. I have put off buying one because I thought having a theraband was good enough..but I was wrong. The stretch strap works muscles in a completely different way. The strap helps a lot better with loosening up a muscle..in my case painful hips. I love the stretch strap; it is well made, long enough for tall people like me and just a very nice product. I bought the blue! Watching this video as I am typing; I do love swimming but a warning to new swimmers, it can irritate hips with the repetitive kicking if you use flippers. I learned the hard way since I always heard swimming was easy on joints.
I've been diagnosed with severe spinal stenosys and am yet to find out if surgery is necessary. My problem is the inconsistencies of symptoms. I may have a few days with no symptoms and then overdo it. Or symptoms of varying intensity for sometimes days or weeks. This makes it difficult to create an exercise regimen that is progressive and effective. I'm not sure I would agree to surgery even. Does surgery have a good track record statistically?
We would always suggest you do everything you can to try to avoid surgery, but sometimes it is unavoidable. Since we arre unable to give you a proper examination, we would suggest you listen to your doctor's recommendation as they know your specific situation and history the best.
Rachel I’m in similar shape to you with severe SS. I try to overdo things on days where my pain has lessened, but then I make things worse. I DEFINITELY don’t want to go the surgery way unless ABSOLUTELY necessary, & am going to do the exercise programmes that I hope & pray will help me to at least function to some normality. I hope that you’re doing well, & I LOVE Bob, Brad, Mike & (of course) skeleton…🧡

Im at my end. I had 2 injuries 12 and 14yrs ago. Diagnosed w degenerate disc, bulging disc and 2 compression fracture in lower back. Now i have extreme stiffness in lower back, pain in the back of my ribs with spasms. I cant get comfortable and wake up in terrible pain (worse in a.m). Ive been down the pain meds road and almost killed me. Ive also spent a kings ransom on chiropractor to no avail
Bob & Brad, I follow your channel since the start of the pandemic and since then you helped me a lot. I now started working out again and I'm getting in great shape, it makes be very happy. I do have a problem though, doing the bench press I feel pain on my right shoulder. I would describe the pain like I need to pop the articulation between the clavicle and the shoulder black acromium but I never manage to and the unpleasent feeling persists. I always try to squeeze back my shoulder blades and keep them stable while bench pressing but apperantly I'm messing something. Any chance you could help me out? Thanks a lot 👍🏻
First we would suggest you stop doing the activities that is causing pain until you have healed. We would also have to recommend you see your physician as we cannot answer individual medical questions online.
I've had what I called a "locked up hip or lower spine" for 3 years straight..I went to so many doctors, bone and joint, pain management, I had a epidural, mri,CT scan, chiropractor...so much...nothing helped no one had a answer or could "figure it out" I was ready to end it all...well after 3 years I was laying in bed and adjusting my back just to try and sleep like I did every single night..something popped in my Lower back in my hip and suddenly it was just gone!! I don't know what I did but I'm honestly in shock that it's gone with no real answers..
My area of stenosis is primarily between my shoulder blades.....do you have advice/activities for that problem? Please let me know as it is driving me crazy.
Ask doctor about Voltaren XR over the counter (Walmart) and ask doctor about the prescription with same name! "Diclofenac" Keep moving, don't sit all the time! Once you stay stationary, it's downhill from there! You will definitely need a physical therapist then! I had the doctor get a physical therapist for several months to get her back on her feet walking! God bless Bob and Brad and all the physical therapists out there that keep us healthy and do miracles!!!!!
My doctor said the MRI results were severe degenerative changes with spinal canal stenosis at L4-L5. Moderate degenerative changes seen in L3-L4 with severe stenosis on the right neuroforamina (where the nerve roots exit the spine). He recommends surgery. I’m not wanting to do something unnecessary. Please help.
A chiropractor took an x-ray of my back and said I have a 'benign' type of spina bifida. Occulta? Anyway as he said I might get a sudden pain in the lumbar when lifting and it did happen. That was yrs ago. Most recently if I'd use the incline sit up board at the gym where the feet hook under the tube and do sit ups my legs would go mostly numb lasting a short time. Could be stenosis.
I am considering buying a PT table for doing stretches etc. at home. Can I ask what kind/brand table is the one in most of your videos? There are several on Amazon very much like that one. Or do you recommend one? Do you sell them one the website or your amazon store? thanks

Brad, what does one do when they’ve been bedridden for 12 months with severe muscle atrophy AND spinal stenosis, disc bulges, etc. I am so weak that coming out of a pool (zero gravity) feels crushing.
Hi there, I don't know if you ever reply.... but I fell in the bathtub during the peak of Covid. I really did a number on myself. I went to step out of the tub to reach something and came crashing down arm over tub wall where door track is. I hurt my shoulder, arm pit area, breast and slammed my chin the fell back and landed on my other side. Left side bad right side not as bad. I never got checked out. 2yrs later shoulder is acting up, arm pit sore fingers tingling and painful, and pain in my inner elbow joint. I do sleep on my side most hurt. My doctor at a recent checkup said the arm pit shouldn't just start to be painful. Could that also be part of a pinched nerve
It is possible, but unfortunately it is impossible for us to say without doing a proper examination. We would suggest you get more extensive tests from your physician to find out exactly what is causing your pain so you can do the correct treatment for it
