    Also, the Master Xehanort transfer to Young Xehanort is incredibly subtle. When Xehanort starts to move, Mickey says "Oh no, Are you-" as if they are different, somehow. Darkness flashes, and yellow eyes glow. We know Master Xehanort has a much greater command of Darkness than Young Xehanort.
    Also, the same thing happens when Master Xehanort takes over Terra. Darkness rages and the Yellow Eyes flash.

    The only explanation that makes sense to me is that he's from before meeting MoM but after Dark Road. And he could technically use the keyblade but chose not to for whatever reason. Obviously a retcon. I remember Nomura saying that both Ansem SoD and Xemnas could use the keyblade too but chose not to. Doesn't make sense but that's the best we got.

  • @RadinV1
    @RadinV1 2 года назад +17

    My assumption was that after the time skip and before his conversation with MoM in Re:Mind, he revisited Destiny Islands and that's the scene in DDD where Ansem sends him to the future (that could even be a cool way to end Dark Road because it parallels the opening)
    The only problem is the keyblade which I really don't think an explanation exists for currently, as you said it's probably just a retcon and there is no way to perfectly explain away everything.

      I think nonura relised this issue. Fun fact is he Was still working out stuff for ddd when square sayed to get it ready for the 10th aniversary.he wantet to Do more pregeals. Basicly when he Figuren out xehanorts backstory it Was to late. And im Sure he wantet to wirk with the canon ddd intodruced ther but it Was propaly to complicatet and he thought for storytelling Sake making xehanort as young as sora when he gets his keyblade is much better. Dark rodeas story got expended mostlikely to explain all errors sonehow.

    I think I'll keep this reaalll simple.
    His outfit 'sytle' never changed and he didn't travel through time in that DR cutscene. It's a dark portal, so it's just a corridor, so essentially, he has the same outfit but at a younger age and different fit tailoring wise. Later on, after ditching his keyblade training attire, he returns to 'his' style. Perhaps in reminisance?

    I loved the perspective of 7:20 and how that helped to clarify what the moving parts of this scene were. The sticker-style cutouts of the characters were super charming. To expand on this from the latest interview with Nomura after Dark Road finally completed:
    Question 1: In past titles, we saw a different-looking Young Xehanort than the one in the Destiny Islands [cutscenes] (seen in Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance)…is there an explanation for that?
    Nomura: Dark Road shows the correct model. At the time of the production of [Birth by Sleep], the appearance of a young man was prepared, but the appearance of a boy was not because of budgetary constraints when it came to 3D modeling.

    This feels like a time paradox and a reconned at the same time, Because when you think about it if xehanort never time traveled then wouldn't that mean xehanort would never have left the island. Which may mean that the original xehanort that never time traveled could have been taught by the master and then that xehanort ceased to exist.

    Welp... I sure do hope you make a follow up video someday about uh... well... the trauma that is the finale of Dark Road and how much of an impact that has on Xehanort. While it doesn't help us pinpoint an exact moment of departure, it does highlight the exact moment where Xehanort crossed a formative line for himself (and Eraqus). I think further conversation needs to be had about our boy Luxu, too...

    According to Vexen's report in KH3, the return of the real Master Xehanort is what prevented his otherselves to exist in the same era.
    "Xemnas cannot exist in the present because there is already a Xehanort here: the old man in charge. The old man's humanity prevents his Heartless and Nobody, others vanquished in the past, and his younger self from being denizens of this time."
    The reason they were out of time in 3D is because of Master Xehanort's existence. It implies YX could have been time-traveling 4 years or more before the events of Dream Drop Distance.

    I think the reason 'YX lacks a keyblade in DDD', might be because he gave it up, maybe after his first falling out with Eraqus. After his classmates died, at some point he went home, he tried to give up being a keyblade wielder, which is why he went back to his old clothes. However because of Ansem or some other force, he was forced to return to that life. That is the only explination I can think of for why kid Xehanort would have a keyblade but Young Xehanort would initially lack one.

    I want to quickly correct a wider misconception that the community has. YX is not the reincarnation of the player, the blue robed figure that raises him in Dark Road is. YX's heart is especially sensitivive to those around him (like Sora) so when he dreams he is unconsciously taking on the memories of the player. This will be expounded upon in missing link

    A crucial detail is that Sora and Riku both de-age when they go to the sleeping worlds. So it seems likely to me that KH3 Xehanort would be de-aged if he first travels to KH3 to etch the future into his heart. He then forgets about these events when traveling to 3D Distance. And reverse, he could have been de-aged and then travel to the future, showing the age his heart actually is supposed to be.

    I personally believe Kid Xehanort first met Ansem, when he was sent to Scala for training purposes. He then stayed there for about 4 years until his training was complete. After leaving Eraqus at the graveyard, he met the MoM in the Wasteland & was given the coat. He passed his exam, got hold of No Name & then went back to Destiny Islands as Young Xehanort, where Ansem congratulated him & perhaps even showed him a glimpse of the future, as shown in DDD.
    As for the different weapons, I believe the two staffs are either training / sparring weapons he just reused when travelling to the BBS times to fight & toy with TVA or they are some kind of Quadratum weaponry, because Xehanort seems to have knowledge of Unreality, given his dialogue in Melody of Memory. Magia, Yozora's friend, seems to wield similar weapons after all - Maybe Xehanort went there once before in his life & either has a connection to said weapons & characters, or he used those weapons over there.
    As for YX's keyblade, I believe it's been given to him by the MoM himself during their first meeting, because the ReMind scene indicates they've met atleast once before & not only does the keyblade have an eye in it, it's also got an hourglass in it, representing the Foretellers & deadly sins, as indicated by his DDD battle arena with the many colorful hourglasses!

So Ansem Sod time traveled to the beginning of Dark Road , sends him off, and waits. When Young Xehanort runs into and gets possessed by Darkness, Ansem Sod re reveals himself and grants time travel to Young Xehanort. Personally i think young xehanort may have interacted with ansem 3 times. The first time he instructed yx to find different variations of himself. It may have taken that yx years so he was aging cause of the time he spent looking for vessels i mean he's aware that com and coded happen so when everyone returned to their times it most likely reset yx to before he time traveled and he had no memory of even meeting ansem. Second time was when Ansem set him off to his fulfil his destiny. And the third time was him either teling yx to do it again or wait in the future for instructions in the middle of his world tour.

    You should do a video on how the master of masters was able to time travel to talk to Xehanort.. was a version of him existing during that time? If so, who or what was that version of him?…unless he’s just an immortal and doesn’t age, we don’t have proof of that yet. Maybe nomura is getting into the idea of “oversoul” or “unity consciousness”, and that everyone is just an incarnation from one big soul, everyone and everything is a version of you, and maybe the masters tapped into that idea? Honestly that would be a wayyy cooler explanation than “yeah he’s just immortal, that’s it”

    • @SonnyNovus
      @SonnyNovus  2 года назад +2

      So far there are two confirmed methods of time travel:
      The Waypoint Method:
      1. One must have a "medium" (an item/object representing the person) at the destination.
      2. Someone with memories of you must be existing at the destination.
      The Heart Method:
      1. You must cast your body aside and become just a heart.
      2. There must be a version of yourself existing at the destination (so you cannot travel to a point beyond your natural death or before your natural birth)
      The Master states that the medium is used to "rebuild the body" at the destination. The Gazing Eye is his medium, and Luxu has the memories. The Book of Prophecies contains a waypoint, it's essentially a glossary of all the events and locations the Gazing Eye sees. So wherever the Gazing Eye is, he can travel there. It is speculated that those who time travel artificially, such as the Union Leaders who use the pods to go into the distant future where they have no mediums or no one to remember them, do not retain their memories. The pod destroys their bodies. How/why the Union Leaders materialize specifically at those places and times is still up for speculation.
      However, the only Union Leader who retains their memories is Brain, as Sigurd provides him with his hat which is the perceived medium. Since Luxu has been body hopping for some time at this current point, Luxu has the memories of him, so the two requirements are fulfilled. Even though Maleficent uses a pod to time travel back (to KH2), she still retains her memories because her crow has her cloak as a medium and the fairies remember her name, much like how MoM retains his memories when he meets Xehanort because No Name exists at that time. Which of course means Luxu is somewhere about in this time, too. Whether he traveled at his own volition or if he was summoned, I'm not sure.
      Xehanort uses an alternate method, where he casts his own body aside and travels as a disembodied heart (Ansem in the brown cloak) back to Destiny Islands to meet with his younger self. He bestows this ability to Young Xehanort. The main difference is that YX retains his body and his memories when he travels to DDD, BUT the trip had a time limit, as the 13 all went back to their respective place and times. The Master, Maleficent and the Union Leaders travel and stay permanently.
      I believe these methods are ancient arts, much like the act of possessing someone. Xehanort and Luxu both have the ability to possess people, but Xehanort's method must be performed with a Keyblade whereas Luxu can take a vessel without one, just as an intrinsic ability.
      My take is that MoM bestowed Xehanort with (compromised) knowledge of both vessel-stealing and time travelling. He took this knowledge with him as he matured and aged, eventually coming to the point of BBS where the saga begins. He nabs Terra's body, their clash renders him an amnesiac where he then becomes Apprentice Xehanort. 10 years pass and Xehanort slowly begins to regain control and remember (with some helpful prodding from Braig I imagine), so the old coot Keyblade Master is back, with all his memories and knowledge in tact. He attacks all his colleagues and becomes the heartless Ansem, with his memories and knowledge of course still in tact.
      I'll end it here, this is a long one, but I hope this helped!

    Oh I just thought of a real possible reason. That older version of him on the island we see. Could be first timeline original xehanort with no contact from himself. And in that timelime he was on the island longer but because he came back from the future in our current kh timeline. Now he's alittle younger and he's behind the scene changing things.

    I almost wonder if the “memories” he had of other friends are going to turn out to be more than just past memories of the player. Like maybe he originally went to scala. Had a brief interaction with eraqus. Then disappeared and traveled back to the islands. And then ansem opened a corridor for him. To me this makes a little more sense than just a straight up paradox of him being the first one to send him to another world and then etching it in his heart so in the future he sends his past self back.

  • @hillaryslack2884

    Great video.
    I am also really looking forward to DR.
    It does seem like Xehanort doesn't time travel until after the four year time skip. Which would mean that we are going to see the brown bag Xehanort again sometime when Xehanort revisits Destiny Islands. Though given that Young Xehanort will not remember time traveling into the future it might be something that is hinted at then back screened. Enough that it's somewhat clear what happened but not outright said. Overall I am not to worried about it.
    As for interviews, I always take them with a grain of salt. If the writers have a plot twist planed they will outright lie to keep the plot twist unspoiled until they are ready to drop it. In CoM they outright show that Axel had emotions, and that he was surprised that he was truly feeling something. Proving that emotions where something that Nobodies could feel. And every game after showed that Nobodies either had hearts or some other way to feel emotion. Yet in interviews until DDD the interviews all denied what the games where showing us so that the plot twist could be unspoiled. I personally think that there is less retconning in KH and more they just lie in interviews, and mistranslations. The game details and foreshadowed hints are more truthful then the interviews. To the point I honestly don't believe a word that the interviews say about the lore of the games, and most of the time believe the opposite.

    • @hillaryslack2884
      @hillaryslack2884 2 года назад

      @CK Gaming Channel True, but that isn't retconning. That's not having all the pieces. Every plot twist they have given us has clues in past games that show that they where thinking about it. Which is almost the opposite of retconning.
      I wasn't disagreeing with what you where trying to say, I was pointing out you where using the wrong word.

    Consider multiple timelines being the answer. Not only has sora changed time, but we can assume MoM has done it or young xehanort potentially made a separate timeline. In doing so one of the versions of himself possibly can be in unreality with MoM which would explain his knowledge of that realm

    I should probably also state Darkness has the ability to alter and transfer memories amiss themselves. So it is possible Player's memories were given to him by Darkness. Ansem, Seeker of Darkness is a Heartless, and therefore a Darkness as well.
    So Ansem SOD and Darkness can lure him off the island using their timeless memories, and then, later, Ansem SOD can teach time travel to YX.
    To add further evidence, Player's memories are given to Xehanort in his dreams. Quote by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness: "And Darkness, it holds our sleep."

    Terranort’s bodiless Heartless travelled twice back in time. First to Kid Xehanort to take him to Scala Ad Caelum. Then again Young Xehanort went back to Destiny Islands and Ansem told him to travel time leading to the events of DDD and KH3. Just before he inherited the No Name Keyblade. Upon returning Young Xehanort will become the Master Xehanort and work on his plan. Master Xehanort would know the points in time he would be at Destiny Islands.

    I think your missing something here. The very beginning of Dark Road was very likely a completely different encounter with Ansem than the one we see in Dream Drop Distance. At least that’s what I always assumed, as it makes the most sense. Meaning YX encountered Ansem twice.
    As for how YX will end up back at the Destiny Islands, I believe something will happen in Dark Road that will cause Xehanort to be banished back to the Destiny islands. Which will lead to him growing older there for a number of years (to be about 20) and eventually meeting Ansem once more who will likely lend his aid in helping him escape again. It’s likely during this period where he’ll gain his yellow eyes. Or if not that, the “incident” that caused him to be banished could have caused his yellow eyes to form.
    Either way though I do think these inconsistencies can be easily explained

    Also, we see it KH3 two versions of Riku Replica. One is Time Traveled from Chain of Memories from before Namine altered his Mind. The other is from after his memory alteration and defeat at Riku's hand. They both exist at that time.
    So Young Xehanort time loops twice. The first time is to pick up everyone for Dream Drop. When they go back, Ansem Sod is still traveling in normal time flow. So Ansem gives YX the power again, and Young Xehanort travels to KH3.

And in his scene with the Master in re mind. His eyes where still not gold yellow yet so. In that scene I don't think he either remembers time traveling. Or hasn't yet. Some things I want to establish before giving my cents; Vessels are an anchor, they're not a key requirement for time travel. Sora time travelled in Remind without a vessel, as did the True Organization in DDD, Young Xehanort is probably no exception, hence the time limit. I think.
    So, I also think Young Xehanort travelled through time, both as Kid and Young. I think Kid Xehanort was given the power of time travel by Ansem placing a piece of his heart in him, but not enough to possess him. This caused Xehanort's eye color change to gold, and the fact that the heart piece he received was from a future version of himself may have caused a feedback loop, creating the hourglass keychain(what are the origins of keychains anyway? In the older games they're either given to Sora or found in chests, but nowadays they just appear after a story thing happens) and aging him up a little, granting him some of Master Xehanort's memories in the process, jading him from the characterization we see in Dark Road.
    Kid, now 'Young' Xehanort, whose heart projected time travel body is around 20 years old, arrives in the time of Birth By Sleep to recruit Vanitas(though upon learning of his possible death, Vanitas starts forming plans to revive himself in Monstropolis) and the heart of Terra-Xehanort(I think). Encountering a member of the Wayfinder Trio, Time-Xehanort ultilizes the keychain to form his ethereal blades.
    As Time-Xehanort continues traveling, the feedback loops round, reversing his age to when his would one day naturally turn gold, Young Xehanort.
    Dream Drop Distance happens and Time-Xehanort reverts back to kid Xehanort.
    Later down the line, Young Xehanort returns to Destiny Islands and Ansem brings him back into the fold. The heart fragment of Master Xehanort enables Young Xehanort to remember the events of Dream Drop Distance and wield the keyblade formed from the hourglass keychain.

    Maybe Xehanort 4 years after arriving at Scala just felt like visiting his original home, and old Xehanort meanwhile was waiting in Destiny Islands for that moment to happen so that he'd be able to send YX to the time of DDD? I don't know, maybe 19-year old Xehanort was just missing his home, that'd explain why in the flashbacks from DDD and BBS he wasn't wearing his black coat (in fact now I think that the scene from BBS takes place after YX returns from the future back to the past, that might explain how Xehanort got the yellow eyes in that BBS scene) Sometimes we forget the fact that the characters resemble human beings and we choose the most convoluted explanations when they're frustrating af, and it's already extremely frustrating the fact that Xehanort sending his younger self to Scala is technically a temporal paradox, like that fact alone shows that the Master of Masters isn't telling the truth about the darkness 😅😅

    Amazing vid as always dude! Even if it is a shorter one ^^
    This whole ordeal's been a headache for a long while for me... for now I've decided to just see it as a model retcon, I assume Nomura changed his mind about Xehanort's age when he started his journey, just so he could make a parallel of it with Sora/Riku more. Wouldnt be the first time he changes his mind about something he previously stated in a Famitsu interview *cough* Nobodies dont age *cough* (Ienzo will forever bury that whole argument).
    But the question still remains... like you said... why now? It really does put a heavy cost to consistency, much more than other retcons in the past. Which makes me think it'll actually have a reason in the story... were it not for the age discrepancy I always asumed Xehanort landed in scala once his time travel journey was over.
    One thing you're right on though is... at this point I feel Nomura's statement of YX wielding a keyblade in DDD being because the old man was in control at the moment has to be something that's been retconned... because he wields a keyblade again in KH3 without the pressence or assistance of Old Man Xehanort. That bears the question though... maybe YX's lack of a keyblade has been retconned alltogether, as that's never been stated outright in the series at all, so they can get away with it, though all it does is make the Mysterious figure fight make no sense, why wouldnt he use it? He STILL does give you that version of No Name from beating him, so maybe its something that was never meant to make sense.
    Who know's Im starting to have the feeling there's more to this that just a full on retcon. But its too much of a headache until we give a straight answer.

    • @gracekim1998

      Mmm nah it’s definitely because of MX in that moment. I’m guessing YX could use THAT keyblade cuz it reflects his time travel ability 😅

  • @marcoa6319
    @marcoa6319 2 года назад

    Here is my take in all of this:
    Kid Xehanort, who has been dreaming about his past life, met one of his future selves Ansem X. The latter sent the former to Scala which led to Dark Road.
    After that, Kid Xehanort returned to Destiny Islands all grown up as Young Xehanort. I’m pretty sure it was retconned that the DDD flashback was when YX already received Keyblade training. Then, YX met Ansem X again who gave the former time travel who then uses it in DDD.
    As for YX not using his keychain for most of DDD, he probably didn’t want to expose his identity to Sora/Riku until the time is right. After that game, YX returned to his time with his memories erased.
    Around the time of his Mark of Mastery exam, YX probably time traveled once again for KH3.

  • @charlieotoole5343

    I’m so glad this video exists, this retcon is one of the major discrepancy in the whole series and the one that always, always bugged me since the first time I read that interview where we learn YX didn’t have a keyblade during bbs and ddd. Unfortunately, Dark Road didn’t even touch the topic one bit, we got nothing. To this day, maybe the best thing is to ignore that interview exists. Maybe Missing Link will clear this out?

    • @SonnyNovus
      @SonnyNovus  Год назад +2

      Nah, I think we just have to take this one on the chin personally. Dark Road is rife with missed opportunities, to the point where I'm convinced the KH writing team just want to get Xehanort over and done with to focus on the Lost Masters, only bringing him in when it comes to his ties with new characters rather than fleshing out his backstory. I haven't really mentioned this publicly, but I think Dark Road was awful in general. It was handled so poorly in an of itself let alone as an explanation for important tidbits from previous games or as an origin story.

    • @charlieotoole5343
      @charlieotoole5343 Год назад

      @@SonnyNovus Yeah I guess it’s just wishful thinking, I can’t help but to agree even though Nomura declaring “missing link will explain every left mistery” did get my attention, I don’t know to what degree though.
      By the way, I personally feel neutral towards Dark Road, but I get why you disliked it, we didn’t learn pretty much anything and while Baldr’s story is kinda okay I didn’t really like how his darkness isn’t related to one of the ancient Darknesses. Like, it feels it just didn’t progress to nothing new, lot of characters aside of Xehanort are wasted.
      Also, I don’t know how to feel about Xehanort being hinted to be in Quadratum.

  • @slateoffate9812
    @slateoffate9812 2 года назад

    I had a conversation with someone on twitter, and they suggested Dark Road happens twice, within a time loop:
    Ansem interferes in his own past, sending Young Xehanort to Scala ad Caelum. Dark Road happens, and Young Xehanort returns to Destiny Islands one last time. While there, Ansem recruits him for the events of Dream Drop Distance.
    Dream Drop Distance happens, and without a vessel to anchor him, Young Xehanort returns to Destiny Islands after he first met Ansem, but with no memory OF Ansem. Ansem either delivers Young Xehanort to Scala ad Caelum again or someone else does(such as the Master of Masters), prompting Dark Road to happen.
    Young Xehanort returns to Destiny Islands and Ansem recruits him for KH3.

    • @SonnyNovus
      @SonnyNovus  2 года назад

      This would make sense if he did travel back and met Ansem a second time, but again, the change of clothes is the real wrench in the works here. Not only is he older but he would need to revert back to his original costume for it to make sense. We shall see if they just expect us to accept this in Dark Road

  • @Nyla_emotes
    @Nyla_emotes 2 года назад

    Well.... Maybe a very simple explanation for why Young Xehanort did not use a Keyblade could be that maybe he did not want to use one. Or maybe he lost the ability to use it as Sora did for a brief moment in KH1.
    My guess is that from the end of Dark Road, Xehanort will start to change and dive deeper into the darkness. And maybe this implied that he could not use a keyblade "of light" anymore. He had to wait to get No Name in order to be able to use one again. Or maybe he decided not to use one.
    And the "special" keyblade that he had when Old Xehanort possessed him could be a result of No Name "fusing" with the keyblade of light he could use or with the weapon he chose while he could not (or did not want to) use his old one.
    Complicated thoughts, but to be honest after all these years we still do not know much about Keyblades and we also never heard about "collecting lux" in KH games a part from the old past. I guess we will see some explanation someday or at least I hope!
    And my big question to you is also: why in KH3 we get 13 No Name Keyblades??? And why Xehanort used them to get the X-blade? I never really understood that passage. I think that No Name was created by MoM after defeating/controlling one of the 7 Darknesses. But why / how did Xehanort have other 12 copies of No Name after the clashing of the guardians of light and the Organization members????

    Maybe its possible Young Xehanort traveled after his hair changed, like theirs a slight timeskip, and he can go back to destiny islands at any time, perhaps between then and before he and Eraqus fought he came back from the future, of course not remembering his future, but his true goal.

    It's interesting, that they forced a quagmire of a (possible) model issue on themselves like this. But, it does line up with another really odd detail: Sora and Riku looking younger in DDD. Why does everything we've seen with Time Travel involve this kind of discrepant age issue?
    Also I thought it was possible Master Xehanort used the Power of Waking to fight using Young Xehanort's body. Heard that somewhere, can't remember where, like the idea though.
