After a long wait and a lot of requests to Atlus, Persona 3 is now available on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC with new features and remastered graphics. However, this port is lacking in many ways that make it disappointing, with a lack of selectable skills in fusion, and backgrounds that were upscaled using a free AI upscaler. I this video I give my thoughts on this port and why I think it is disappointing.

4:23 I just want to make clear I am in no way shape or form an authority over the behind the scenes process of how the port was made so claiming confirmation might be a bit of a reach! However I am pretty positive that more care could indeed have been put into the upscaling process, even if the most commonly used modern models have licenses that do not allow commercial use
You’re damn right more care could’ve gone into it. My 4gb ram laptop plays FES with better graphics than my 500 dollar ps5 does with portable. After playing FES on an emulator because I was genuinely passionate about this game, I bought p3p on ps5 out of hype, started the female route and realised how lame it was. It’s so much less impactful with this shitty visual novel style, not to mention the graphics. Half the fun for me in FES was exploring the maps, just walking around and talking to people was so much fun and so interesting to see in a ps2 game. But in portable it’s just so much less fun. Anyways, if you want a better story and interactive experience play FES. If you want the improvements to the battle system and can handle it being an ass looking visual novel, play portable, but you’re better off playing FES. Whilst the gameplay IS dated, it’s not unbearable and with the use of tactics you should be fine. Anyways, rant over.
Still I do think atlus is trying here I mean you try and port a years old game which you no longer have original source code too ontop of that comments can be outright missing or old from the programmers at the time to me this is a good thing for them to do they are trying to branch out. And it’s obvious that they will have trouble doing so they will still try to patch as best they can but persona 3 is a tough cookie somone tried to remaster it before them and they couldn’t get up the fucking stairs due to an fps bug
@@alexanderscout they lost the source code for FES, not portable. Anyways, using a free AI upscaler is still pathetuc
@@lemonlime8949 what else do you expect them to do they were going to fuck up in some way with p3 considering how walking up stairs was a problem when somone else remaster it
@@alexanderscout true, it would’ve taken a lot of effort to fix their buggy source code. It’s just such a special game to me though that I want to see it get the love it deserves
The "ideal" version of P3 is clearly combining the best features from FES with the best features with P3P. Let's hope either a fan project can pull it off, or Atlus decides to actually care about a genuine, quality remake
I feel we would need a team of our own to pull of coverting what was persona 3 portable's content to 3D. But it should be possible
@@orange7252 1 guy is already making femc available in 3d spaces we just need to change the models and the dialogue in the story.
There's also the voice acting that would need to remade though
They know not to announce a remake before the port comes out. Then less people would buy the port and they'd have less money, oh no!
@@andreworders7305 I agree with that. The question is whether they're even considering a remake to begin with
@@kvltovpersonality6290 I hope they are because I don't think I'll play Persona 3 until we get a updated version with actual effort put into it. Excited to play P4G though.
The most dissapointing thing about the P3P rerelease is that the skill inheritance is still random...
Exit and reopen the fusion to get a different variety of skills
@@DC-pf5tp We shouldn't have to do that
Goddammit atlus
I'm playing Vanilla P3 and yesterday it took me 30 minutes to get all 3 Auto-kaja skills and evade Wind, I'm not playing P3P until they change that shit
But but, the skill card….
Unfortunately, the FES version and P3P version are run on two completely different engines. They’d basically need to remake it from the ground up to combine the two versions, which I hope they do if they announce a remaster/remake.
imo they should have done that from the start, even it meant delaying the game's release...
They could also have just included both versions
Sounds like Atlus problem to tackle before they get my money.
@@shuraamano Unfortunately FES Code is so messed up it's impossible to remaster it, it would need to be remaked. It's not even on the PS4 and PS5 playstore.
@@azlanadil3646 Agree that a new game is more profitable, rather than a full remake with questionable changes in both mechanics and narrative. Also remakes are more expensive to develop than in the past, taking into account the new engine/programme, re-recording of old/new voice lines depending on the respective VA schedules, reworked/new music, and animated cutscenes. Another concern is the alterations of the narrative in order to fit the current audience, resulting in questionable choices.
Taking into account Atlus limited manpower and resources despite their newfound recognition, its better to move the franchise forward.
They used waifu2x on textures in the p4g ports, but the difference is that it doesn't lead to a mushy looking environment like it does here. You still get some weird artifacts on walls or clothing in p4g, but not nearly as distracting as this game's backgrounds. Not to mention, waifu2x was trained on portraits, its good on portraits and other 2d art, its absolutely not that great on entire environments.
ProP4G was already 720p so the texture/art was high res enough so that the AI didn't have too much guesswork or the freedom to fuck things up bad
But with something 480p and chunky pixels like P3P yeah...a hell of a lot of small (and sometimes huge) details look weird, morphed or completely unrecognizable...it's to be expected from an AI but honestly did no one double check some of those ?
Golden was a Vita game, it was already pretty high res in that regard.
That is true, but they used mostly PS2 assets in golden, except for HUD. Still much better than PSP assets though.
@@aaronlink127 They actually did quite a bit of remastering with P4G, nearly all the background objects are more detailed and have bigger poly count on the psvita compared to the ps2 version.
I did not even realise any artifacts on p4g at all, an I'm like 20 hours in
holy shit the character dialogue compression caught me off guard, I actually physically did a double take. Atlus is fucked for this one
It sounds like 3DS audio lmao please😭💀
@@lewis9s 3DS had better audio quality, this sounds like straight DS compression.
@@Blackpapalink My honest instinctual reaction was remembering DS/gameboy advance games, yeah. Its baffling, there is no possible valid excuse.
With my soundbar i didnt noticed any bad sounds. But when i used headset it hit me like a thunderstrike. Damn it sounds horrible.
@@bud11_2 I mean idk, it’s definitely worse, but with all the shit atlus has going on and with all the shit they do well, y’all are way too hyper fixating on a port you guys are acting like was advertised to be a huge remaster, and that atlus betrayed us lmfao. I can cut them some slack for this after playing every other title they release that they usually ace, I’ve been playing it and the compressed audio doesn’t actually get to me as much as realizing how cringe the voice acting always was 😂
The fact that even the UI itself was lazily upscaled with AI is pure comedy
*Certified Atlus moment
they fixed the bonus exp text though :D
AI is a bane upon game rereleases.
Yeah they should have gone and recreate that stuff instead I had my fun doing that once so I know how great it would look.
such a dumb thing to complain about
Me when Persona 3 Reload exists now.
Yup coming back to this video lmao
@@EChere except atlas makes it worse with it since they confirm in an IGN interview that they are cutting out the content from FES and Portable so now there's 3 different versions to choose from now
It's sad a company that makes games don't want to put in the effort to make a wholly realized version of such a beloved game in a series as popular as Persona, when it's so readily laid out for them. But they couldn't even be bothered to have manual skill inheriting after Nocturne HD, so that obviously was never going to happen.
🫢
Looks like Altus is scared that P3 fans would have the same “We won’t accept anything other than P3” kind of attitude the SMT3 fan base had. I read on TV Tropes that the reason the Nocturne HD remaster is mostly just HD assets with even some of the most basic QoL features like manual inheritance unavailable on release is because Nocturne fans keep bashing the later numbered SMT games for changing things so they’re what they’re pandering to.
Did Atlus lose the original audio from their older projects? Seems like compression has been a common issue for their last few remakes.
More than likely yes. Either they've lost the original source files for the audio or it'll take far too long for them to remaster the audio. Likely its a combination of both.
Talk about incompetency
Talk about recovery source code from windows XP or windows 7 hard drive
@@GinraiPrime666 if they lost the original audio files, couldn’t they at least get the audio files out of the PSP ISO? Then it should sound the same as the psp version.
The fact that it sounds worse than the psp version is confusing
I'm actually astonished that the audio sounds WORSE in a REMASTER thank you so much for making this video
This is why I call it "a port of a port" instead of a remaster. Because it's dumb :)
Still one of my favorite games though.
I think they wanted to lower how loud all the sounds were together and focused on the music rather than the voices
@@time2play961 i don't really think that's true. The audio in certain parts just sound 3x more compressed than it is on the psp. Though i am glad that the shadow running away scream is gone, still kinda miss it lol.
This isn't the only game that had that done to it in a remaster or the P4 Golden/P5 Royal treatment even though P3P is much more of a port. God Eater 2 Rage Burst on PS4 (the version I have) still kept the compressed audio from the original PSP version of the game in the parts of the game that were not unique to Rage Burst.
it sounds like it was coming out of a ds
We need a full remake of 3, it sucks that we have to put up with these dated systems if we want to experience this story, I was planning on getting it just for that reason but seeing this stripped down version make me question that decision
Part of it is just part of the experience, tbf - the more pleasant gameplay of 4 and 5 would be really jarring. I don't think anyone should play P3 '07 like I did, but the entire theme of the game is about struggling with death. P3P or FES, preferably using community mods, is perfectly fine - if you're willing to accept the pain.
If you want to see the story and can't be bothered by the mechanics, why not watch a cutscenes only video instead?
@@Glaugan i mean 70 to 90 % of persona (at least 4 and 5 havent played 3 still) story and character development happens in dialogue so idk how watching only cutscene would let you experience the game. But as I said havent played it yet so maybe in 3 is ok?
no we dont stop asking for remakes and remasters when will you people learn
@@sourcesauce yeah we do, do you want to continue to play shitty incomplete ports forever? Idk about you but I'd rather be able to play the complete game without have to get 2 seperate copies and play one of which on a ps2 or PC
As a long time Persona 3 fan I was incredibly excited to hear we were getting access to Persona 3 on steam.
I can entirely understand Atlus' decisions to choice P3P over P3FES, but I do wish it would have been some sort of hybrid between the two, but in my mind I already figured we weren't going to get something like that.
As I am still taking my time going to through the game again since the last time I played was about 2-3 years ago I do understand people's frustrating with the low rendered background and the no choosing yours skills when fusing for example, I guess since I played P3 so many times I already I wasn't really bothered by it, but I do agree it could have been handled better.
And I have seen more people mention audio crust, but the only time I encountered it is when you summon Orpheus for the first time and sometimes when Mitsuru analyses an enemy.
And I guess I am also not entirely sure if I would recommend people this for their first P3 experience, sure it's the most accessible, but if someone owns a PS3 I'd say play FES on that (or an emulator) and if you are still craving more P3 after that play the Female route with the remastered release.
Or alteast be aware of the "roughness" of this port.
After reading comments about everyone complaining this was nice to read for a change
you will still buy the game
I really hope the rumors of a Persona 3 Remake are true it is definitely needed
At this point just make a P3 remake ! Everyone wants it and it would make up for this lackluster remaster
Even then apparently it's just the base P3, not a definitive edition that would include FES and FemC
A remake would be the worst thing Persona 3 could get. FES is the perfect package and it needs to be brought to modern systems, even if it's a unity port like SMT3HD.
Unnecessary need for remake or remaster. A version of the game is out already on all platforms. If you don't like it you can easily get what the modded community is working on. Atlus could better use resources for p6. Not every old game needs a remake/remaster.
@@sokoTV2 ehhhh theres some issues with FES just because its pretty old at this point. things it would benefit from a remake: Upgraded graphics, QOL, fem mc, japanese audio, more fleshed out social links like later games, etc
Glad to hear valid criticism that isn't just shitting on Portable. It's a not ideal situation, I wish we could get a combined version (and no I don't mean FES with some Portable content, I mean a genuine combined version).
Especially. FES with a Full Female Route. Meaning a Hot springs Section you can fully Control. As Female
Portable gets shat on for all the right reasons. The additions are mid to questionable at best, and the cuts are heavy.

I had never clicked so fast as I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on any of the recent Persona Port Announcements.
I was already skeptical about P3P due to the technicalities (and my friend who loves P3 so much, is aware of the flaws) and I'm not surprised by all the points you laid out. Along with the rest of the comments here, I 100% agree with your video. ATLUS could've added a bit more love to it since it IS a Persona game and also an iconic one in the franchise. It is sad to see that they didn't put much effort into "remastering" this classic. 😔
I saw a comment by TLCompletionist saying that it's best to remake the game instead of porting it. This would've been a wiser move.
Any port of Persona 3 was going to be disappointing. In dire need of a flat out remake.
It's heavily rumored they're about to announce one, of course, since it's a rumor you have to take it with a grain of salt, but they might not have wanted to put a lot effort into this since they were focusing on the remake.
Nah, P3 doesnt need one nor is it in dire need of one
Just needs an HD remaster of FES with manual inheritance and direct commands

I think the remaster is okay at least on switch but what I hate is the Missing sound effects. I have no idea if it's just me but I had two moments where Mitsuru would tell me The Reaper was approaching, yet the Iconic chain sound effect was actually missing, so I had a mini heart attack when he slaughtered everyone out of nowhere when I was looking at the mini map or too busy finding the stairs or Access Points
Maybe a bug? I can hear the chain sound effect on PC.
I can hear it fine on my switch
It's on Switch, tho.
that sound struck fear into my heart
I play on PC and I can hear the chains.
But what I don't hear is the squeals from the underdeveloped shadows fleeing me which I could have sworn was a thing. I think depending on what platform you download from you could miss a few MB of sound on the total but im not entirely sure. Mines isn't a big deal but if the chains weren't working I'd Uninstaller and re-install real quick to see if that fixes it.
Well a year later at least we know now why they didnt put effort in
How do you go back from Nocturne HD having manual skill select after clear and sound negative feedback from the players to NOT having manual select skill at all???
I'm genuinely curious to what is going on there behind the scenes to make these utterly dumb and unprofessional decisions that makes you give the vibes of being nonchalant with the entire game and its community.
Really hoping modders can save this the way they did Nocturne HD on PC. Better cutscene resolutions and audio specifically. Hope we get some talented people who can fix the audio issues, or at least mod the PSP sound files in
To be fair there has already been efforts for both FES and P3P to have mods that improve the resolutions of the cutscenes, improve the framerates, have proper HD quality models and backgrounds, controllable party members in FES to name afew.
Those efforts already exist it seems like - its just a matter of people bringing their enhancements from PSP to PC. But Id argue its all pointless in an environment where playing either fes or even maybe original portable is superior, emulation or not.
At least in the situation of ports like nocturne HD the gameplay is the best its ever been and the assets are generally higher quality (with new voice acting too), and most people consider that to be a bad port, so for this to be of an even lower standard and for the more popular franchise is crazy to me.
We can't leave everything for modder to "fix", the company must be accountable for fucking it up or else they will just keep releasing bad stuff and just wait for modders to fix it for free
wait what? nocturne on PC got a mod fix?
@@bintanglazuardi4961 Well, its starting to. I've been recently working on 60fps and a corner minimap, they're on my channel. Other people have added uncompressed music, proper HD 4:3 cutscenes, small QOL changes... go look at the gamebanana page.
The most amount of work they had was converting the code language and standardize it to make ports.
"Code language".
That makes literally no sense.
@@code-knight I should have explained that is something you do in programming you pick old programs let's say in Ruby (coding language for ios) and you convert that into something that can be used for other machines Java or C# for example and you update the necessary outdated portions.
You can do that with a Google translate like translator but you need to clean it up meticulously after so it works.
And that depends on the previously used language if you use C# it's easier to make ports with a little formating into compatibility.
i was also hoping for this rerelease to be some kind of definitive version as well, both FES and Portable have their own goods
i love how in FES you have fusion skill which imo is better than the item thingy used in Portable instead (i know having fusion skill might be too broken considering you can spam Armageddon with one of the 2 persona you use have Victory Cry but i still think it's a very cool system), ofc the 3D exploring feature is also a huge plus for me
as for Portable version we can have female MC which is great. We have skill cards system which is very helpful as well. Last but not least the feature to control the whole party which is the most important thing that FES missing
having all those + points in the rerelease would have been awesome and will definitely make the old players who have played both games have the reason to buy the rerelease and making them feel like they're actually playing a very different game than the 2 older versions
I'm pretty new to the series but the idea of someone trying 3 for the first time and playing the Portable version... it's just a shame. You joke about this being like if Sega re-released only the PS2/Wii version of Sonic Unleashed, but honestly at times it feels more like the Java phone game version, or like a flash game version or something. The added features for Portable are great for your second playthrough, and FemC is cool, but the stuff that's been cut feels like it'd make your first playthrough quite underwhelming. For a 2010 PSP game, it was fine. For 2023, this is just kind of embarrassing. Not only is it still better to emulate FES, but based on what you pointed out about the crusty audio on the remaster, it might still be better for a player to emulate the PSP version if they want to play it.
if you open the files on PC, you can see umd0, umd1, and umd2 (Universal Media Disc, the PSP disc format) in the files, making me think it's just a fancy PSP emulator. even the save menu feels exactly like the PSP's BIOS / Built in save menu. might as well go all the way and use a PSP to play the remaster too using homebrew.
tbh it now feels like a mod for P4G 2020-2023
(still makes sense knowing that original P3P is closer to P4G codewise)
I completely understand that RenderWare being out of circulation is probably why FES would never have been ported over P3P, and I also just generally prefer Portable as a game over FES, but the upscaling work on stuff like the backgrounds and UI is just bare minimum levels of lazy. I appreciate the QoL improvements like the Quick Save function and being able to restart the floor you die at in Tartarus but again, bare minimum. It's more convenient but I'll probably wait to get it on sale with the P4G bundle
Also, no skill inheritance is a massive missed opportunity
But, you won't find anything like 3D environment, 3D exploration, anime cut scene, no censorship also the answer dlc with good battle themes and two opening..
@@royalkumar795 on the other hand, you can control your party. So it's pretty even.
@@Oly1y with mods, you are only control your party also disabled tried features which was annoying features to stop you to grind the tartarus
@@Oly1y if that's your main gripe with FES there is a mod that allows you to control your party. Then again that mod was released just last year so i ended up playing portable because of that, had a vita so i could play it anywhere and getting tired mid dungeon was also not very fun.
P4G on pc also uses render ware, so that’s not the reason
When I first booted it up, I got frame rate drop in the middle of the intro movie. It never happened again after that, but I didn’t even know it was possible for a pre-rendered cutscene to have performance issues. Beyond that everything has been fine so far. The fact that you can just buy more SP and return to the base floor from every floor seems kind of OP, but Im assuming that was also in the original. Oh, and for some reason the VA defaults to Japanese, on Switch at least
In the original, teleporting back would restore HP and SP. It didn't directly cost money, but you need to use an escape item or go to a checkpoint until Fuuka learns to teleport you for free. The trade-off is that you don't get to teleport back to where you were, it doesn't give revives (returning with a party member that's been fainted makes them unusable for the rest of the night unless you revive them first), the floors are randomised, and the balance is *mean*. You can easily die to mobs all the way up to end of the game if you're not paying attention, even on Normal difficulty.
Honestly, I like that. It encourages you to really run yourself ragged, until your team are exhausted. It fits thematically, and it's annoying in other games, where you have to arbitrarily spend money or end the day because you ran out of restoratives.
@@theMoporter so the initial release didn't let you resume where you returned from? That sounds a lot more balanced.

And someone who has never played P3 before a few days ago when I picked it up for the switch I gotta say this is not a bad first exposure to the game for me, same with smt nocturne hd, but with the points that you made I 1000% agree. I still think I’m gonna enjoy it regardless of the shortcuts they took instead of meticulously work on it to make a better game. I wish there was a definitive version where they combine FES and portable and just make a game that makes both of those titles special in a one package, hence a remake
to me FES will always be the way to play... for the unbeatable atmosphere, amongst other things. I wish they either gave you a combination of FES and Portable so u could choose, or like you said have an ideal version that had the best of both.

Tragic to see it's a Dark Souls Remastered situation. Fingers crossed that they'll eventually come out with a definitive edition, as unlikely as that is now-
You should do what I'm doing now and play FES on PC with the HD mod. It's the closest we'll get to a P3FES remaster
Why a Dark Souls remastered? DSR had all content at least and revived online. People used to cry about Armor looking different but DSR really fixed the game since dsfix isn't perfect.
In the meantime just emulate fes
DS Remastered is good tho
This is actually much worse than Dark Souls Remastered
I’m so glad the comments are being so truthful! I was wondering why I recognized the same sound effects being used- when they actually r being used💀
I wonder if the poor sound design was likely due to them re-doing the voice work? I know some of the more noticeable changes that were done were corrected dialogue specific to the FEMC route, since I had heard that they fixed the glitch that had NPC-to-MaleMC dialogue in the FEMC route (I.e., they mistakenly refer to FEMC as “he” of “him”).
Nope, they probably just lost the original tapes, this also happened to the gta remasters lol.
But idk how they even managed to make it even more compresed than the psp version, didnt they test the game before releasing?
I agree with you. I’ve been playing through it and the compressed audio is so noticeable. Honestly that was my biggest fear with p3p they seriously need to do a remake for it

I just think they need to bite the bullet and do a definitive rebuild. P3P does have its QoL improvements, but its downgrades tend to overwhelm them. The biggest unique feature is the femprotag route which is interesting, but is non-canon and basically takes a wrecking ball to the original's core story. And Ken Amada's SL is creepy AF.
I would happily pay full price for a (physical) definitive rebuild of P3, because budget "remasters" designed with digital platforms in mind tend to produce low effort results (like Final Fantasy VIII's remaster).

PPSSPP with the hd textures unironicaly gives you a better experience than these horrible ports
Man, I first played P3 through a PSP emulator and even with all the jankiness of that I fell in love with the game and it's still my personal favorite of the series. I was looking forward to finally being able to play it through official means and have a "proper" experience, and seeing the complete lack of care Atlus has given this game is kind of heartbreaking? I think I'm gonna hold off on getting it and maybe see what modders are able to do (they've done some beautiful work with the FFIX port so I know even AI upscaling can do amazing work if done properly). Why does it feel sometimes that Atlus is almost resentful about their past work?
I think a way P3P's remaster/re-release could have been better, outside of actually doing something new with the QOL, would have been to implement a gallery feature? It's relatively inexpensive and it could add additional incentive for completionists to unlock. Plus, alot of the art books and conceptual docs for P3 and P4 and hard to come by in physical forms, so being able to freely view concept art, listen to audio, translated dev logs, old promotional material like OG japanese commercials, heck even a 3D Model Viewer could have been a really fun addition! Dont get me wrong, I think P4G's remaster on PC was amazing on it's own, but since we kinda got passed over for the Persona Anniversary outside of Japan, that little extra bit of celebration could have been nice.
Great video dude! I almost completely agree with everything you said in this video. 😊 This
port/rerelease is mostly alright, but could have been so much more.
I think this should have been $10, since they hardly did anything to it and so much time had passed since the release of this comprised version that seems fair. That being said I knew Atlu$ would never charge less than what they are charging for P4G regardless of how much work they did to remaster P3P.
As someone that has played through FES to death on both the PS2 and PS3, I was excited for these ports simply because they were on consoles that not many people bought. I don't notice many things like the visuals or audio so in all honesty, I'm having a good time as FemMC checking out the differences as I tend to wonder what got changed. Things like the skill cards from leveling Personas would mean that I could end up getting exactly what I want from grinding up the personas that have them as I remembered how long it took me to get a decent Orpheus Telos for the Elizabeth fight after much research.
Yes, it's weird that the anime cutscenes aren't there but these are ports or remasters and you knew what you were getting into if you chose to buy them because that means that it's gonna be some cleaning up with the games being as old as they are rather than any major additions outside of whatever came with the ports already.
What kills me is how there is pretty much no impact in a lot of scenes because of the lack of cutscenes.
the audio compressed hard during battles
It's just very jarring that there wasn't a FES port as well at least. Given that The Answer is canon meaning new players miss out on part of the story. FeMC is cool but it's weird how everyone seems so casual a story heavy game is missing a major part of it's story
Dude did you forget ? Hating on The Answer is the cool thing 😎
On a serious note, The Answer set many things for Persona lore wise that is still mentioned even in Persona 5 + in P4AU the Persona 3 side of the story is quite literally a direct sequel to The Answer but a few years later.
@@thegamerfe8751 I mean i myself personally dislike The Answer mainly the pre final boss fights but it just seems off that a major part of P3 is just missing
@@zephyrorsomethinh1528 Well unlike you the people who hate it just want it removed from existence (+ they hate everything about it, not a specific part), I had genuine conversations with some people saying that it's better off not getting The Answer again.
@@thegamerfe8751 That makes me feel so represented lol. I think it really detracts from the game and I would want it removed. However, I hope it gets ported so you guys can be fairly treated. I'll just keep gleefully pretending it doesn't exist.
@@artless3438 You're looking at it wrong if you think it detracts from the game, after all you can play The Journey without touching The Answer.
Though even if you do think it's fair that The Answer returns somehow, no offense but it's stupid to dislike something so much you want it removed even if it's an official canon thing that exists. And this isn't about The Answer specifically, for example there are the people who hate Attack On Titan's ending so much that they made their own alternative ending to the story with an anime version apparently being made (which opens its own can of stupid worms).
I think it's childish to have such a hate boner for a story that just exists and didn't harm anyone.
To play devil's advocate:
There is a good chance that ATLUS does not own the source code for FES or even the PSP version anymore, making native ports virtually impossible.
Looking at the PC release shows that while the data is encrypted, it is labeled "UMD" (numbered similarly to the PSP's internal data structure), so there's a good chance that this release is a emulated image of the original PSP release, similar to what Square did with Chrono Cross. This would also explain why the game itself (a.e. skill selection) wasn't changed either.
Both releases suffered from larger images (Background, UI elements) to be washed out and/or blurry due to A.I. upscaling.
Its likely that it was a rushed job with an untrained A.I. or this might point towards limitations in on-the-fly asset injection for anything but the 3D render pipeline.
So, for a 20 bucks budget release, there might have been very little ATLUS could have done differently without turning this into a major project internally.
Finger's crossed that there eventually will be a de-facto golden version of P3, combining FES and Portable while adding some modern touches to it.
3:55 unrelated but I *hope* they do re release that version of Unleashed alongside the HD version, it stands up on it’s own
Man I was hoping for a FES port since I always love that version
True, people should just play on ppsspp if they want p3p. They should just port p3fes
I was playing p3p earlier and I just decided to play fes again, it was a bit too underwhelming for me to want to pour 80ish hours into the game.
Yes I prefer FES, the lack of cutscenes bothers me and I find the atmosphere alot more lacking
i’ve beaten fes and started portable, but so far i actually prefer the quality of life changes made in p3p. and ik it’s divisive, but one of my minor issues with fes is after a point i found the way the map works, and world travel to be quite slow, and the point and click style actually fixes this for me, and i’ve had a lot of fun with it so far
@@adachy That’s a good point to make about the map. Although personally I would have preferred they port FES, P3P had its pros and cons. Honestly I’m just happy people can experience Persona 3 for its story. But they should have incorporated the cutscenes and 3D world.
@@adachy Aside from the new content with the Female MC the other quality of life improvements like a controllable party can be enjoyed with FES via mods and even updates to the framerate.
@@GinraiPrime666 no quick travel menu tho,it's takes so long to do anything in fes compared to portable
Literally same, I did that exact same thing yesterday
Here's an idea I haven't heard anyone toss around, why not just rerelease both FES and Portable in a bundle?
I don't think there would be that many arguments if both versions were ported to modern consoles.
I totally get your points, and honestly knowing fes had cutscenes makes me feel pretty bad that I don't get to see them while progressing through the game. But as completely new game I've been enjoying this re-release a lot and i would highly recommend it to everyone who is curious to try it out.
I recommend watching the persona 3 movies, they're pretty good
Will do, after i Finish the game
Thing is, having played Portable back in the day, the side content of Portable was actually better as a product. The female protagonist had more interesting social links (including social links to ALL the SEES members) which replaced superfluous ones. It also had new quests, mechanics and it got rid of the godawful Answer chapter.
Honestly the deal is that P203P should not have been simply remastered, it needed to be remade and given the “brand new console” treatment. That way they did not had to force new players to deal with relics of PSP-era game design.
@@lenleon3699 i found it cool that you could interact with more people but the content and dialogue itself was mostly meh. I would trade all that for just having Maya back
@@tofuteh2348 Basically you just wanted your online teacher waifu back.
That audio downgrade from the PSP version is insane...
I bought the bundle of 3P and 4G on Switch and have been playing through the FemC route of 3P first. I bought the bundle mostly for Persona 4 Golden because of course I'm going to buy a copy of my favorite game of all time on my preferred modern console, but I also did want to replay P3P because I haven't done that since I played it on a real PSP and only finished the male protagonist route. Despite the very clear issues that the P3P port obviously has, it doesn't change the fact that one of the best JRPGS of all time (even if I personally prefer 4 in everything but the main story) is now way more accessible, especially on PC with modding.
"to silence any rumors of a remake" this aged so well LOL
I would've started with Persona 3 FES, and added the other stuff back in. Since there are cheats that fix the party control issue that probably would've been pretty easy. The only problem with that is it probably would've taken a decent bit of work to add FeMC after the fact, but I'd trade her for intractable environments and anime cutscenes any day.
P3FES 's code is a jumbled mess and trying to port it is basically remaking the whole game from scratch so thats not possible

They could have done what they did with SMT 3 where they recreate the game using a different engine, that way they can make a version of P3 that combines what made FES and Portable great while adding other quality of life changes like manual skill selection in fusion. I'd pay full price for that.
One of my most hated things in the port is that the next turn check says the wrong info i would check who is going next and it would say its the shadow so i plan for that but then NOPE its yukari who goes next i hate that so much cause it never happened the psp version
6:03 the audio issue is exactly the same as SMT3 Nocturne in which it is downsampled to 11.5 kHz. It is so baffling because in the PSP version the audio has 22 kHz AFAIC.
the dumbest part for me is that the switch version of the game didn’t allow you to use the touchscreen, which seems like a missed opportunity considering how the PSP and switch are both portables
I only own and beaten FES, I was gonna try Portable on emulator but then the ports got announced so I waited. Now that I'm 12 hours into the PC port of P3P, I honestly love it. The female protagonist feels very fresh and different from the male, not to mention the gameplay improvements in Portable, it makes for a great second playthrough. Both versions are about equal for me. I do think FES is the best way to experience P3 first, for the better presentation and male route (also the combat isn't that bad just change the tactics idk what to tell yall lol). Then P3P for the gameplay changes and female route as a second playthrough. But anyway, I haven't had any big issues with the remaster. The only visual thing that really made me stop and look for a minute was the weird looking icons for the elements and stuff lmaoo. But the one only big thing I noticed was the audio. Battle audio can be weird but it's not a big deal, but the persona awakening dialogue is so bad I could barley hear Kotone even say "Persona" LMAO
fes was the version i played.
hell i will even argue the combat had weight since it kinda personalize each character.
@@liesandy291 Which was neat in theory, but not in practice, alas
I honestly thought that I was crazy for not binging this new release the same way I have done for many of the other atlus titles that I've had. I've played p5, p5r, p5s, p4g, and SMT 5, and in every single one of those I binge them from the moment I bought them for at least 20-30 hours over a couple days before I would start to slow it down to a more steady schedule. When I got p3p, I played it for about 4 hours over two days, and 3 and a half of those hours were on the release day. What I'm essentially trying to say is that p3p doesn't give me that same burning desire to play it the moment I have free time the same way all the other atlus games that I've played have made me do.
I think one of my biggest critiques is the lack of a 3d over world. I thought that I would be able to look past it for the gameplay, but it honestly makes the social aspect of the game seem so hollow to me. Same thing with the lack of cutscenes. Comparing the awakening of the players persona between FES and portable is just absolutely night and day, and I couldn't help but be a bit bummed out with what we got instead.
I'll still try and finish the game because I would like to experience the story of persona 3, but now I'm worried that I won't even want to try and play the femc after I finish with my first play through due to the issues I've stated above.
This is one of the reasons I think FES is better. The presentation is a huge part of the game and sucking you in and P3P gets rid of all of that.
Honestly go emulate p3fes instead. It's very easy and you can add controllable teammates. Look for a video called "Persona 3 FES and Portable Have Never Been This Good" for how to set it up to look better.
Thankfully since it's pc, modders will do the game justice. Someone already added an anime cutscenes mod
the beginning persona awakening cutscene on console actually shocked me because the sound effects and voice lines sounded like they were coming from a MOBILE GAME OR A 3DS💀
Nah I agree. I was honestly shocked by these backgrounds when I first saw them. Its insane that they let some of this stuff fly under the radar. To me it shows they didn’t really care when they were making this port. I was gonna use this rerelease as an excuse to replay the game but now? Idk I might just go back to the original
No matter the form I'm just glad I can finally play the GOAT P3 on my PS5 with trophies but I am glad I still have my PS3.
I’ve already finished P3FES and I was waiting for this release to see Portable’s exclusive content, and for the trophies. And for that, this new release is satisfying enough, even if the sound really should have been improved.
I knew I wasn't the only one disappointed by this. For a second there I thought it was just me being a snob about the series. And then I actually started doing some research and found I wasn't the only one that had issue with this.
Its a port. Not a remaster.
Even P3P's opening animation is designed so that you can watch it upside down on your PSP, and therefore, from the female protagonist's point of view. Imagine trying to flip your monitor or your TV screen.
8:30 I don’t think this silences any rumors of a remake since releasing a port to make a buck before announcing a remake, which would make many people hold-off on buying the original, seems incredibly in-character for ATLUS.
I really do hope they announce a P3 Remake. I never played 3 or 4 until they dropped on GamePass, so I decided to check out both. I ultimately decided to pursue 4 for now, but 3 was definitely something that caught my attention. I think I like the characters and music more in 3, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was playing a game that wasn't meant to played on big TV. The lack of free roam outside of dungeons in favor of that point and click approach just isn't for me. Maybe I'll find a way to play FES if they don't end up announcing a remake this year.
PSP: "Here goes..." (5:37)
Remaster: "Sheer goth..." (6:05)
This is especially damning since it came out just after Crisis Core, another PSP title that had an amazing remaster just last month. I mean yeah the budget is different, but we can't keep treating atlus like some indie studio.
On spanish language, some random letters appeared when I was on the second rank of the hanged arcana, I assume those were commands or something because in emulator that didn't happened.
Yeah that cutscene you showed from the PSP version was much better than the remaster. Yukari does sound similar enough to how she does in FES in the PSP version but I CAN HEAR the compression on Yukari's voice in the remaster cutscene. Orpheus sounds off in both PSP and the remaster though as that reverb in FES really pushed the feeling of you bringing forth something that seems powerful where in PSP and the remaster sound like a soft voice that doesn't really give a strong feeling. Also Minato/Makoto's saying of Persona when they awaken and summon Orpheus sounds too quiet to give the scene the tension of seeing it happen.
Edit: I can't even hear him say Persona in the remaster as it sounds like babble and the sound of some sort of etheric-like glass being shattered just sounds like a stock glass shattering sound in the remaster.
I put all my faith into the p3p modders, they will carry the burden of fixing this "remaster"
Honestly, the key thing to note the marketing never really advertised it to be a remaster of any sorts... I mainly remember them just announcing that Persona 3 portable was getting released to the latest consoles and that was it. They didn't really announce any kind of gameplay/balance chances or slap a Remastered on persona 3 portable. So this was what I kind of was expecting anyways. But I am just happy to have Persona 3 portable again... even if it looks like jank
Funny, cuz they did change the title
They removed the "SMT" moniker like they've being doing since P4G
Yeah they never marketed it as a remaster however, the fact that it actually looks and sounds worse than the PSP version is inexcusable and they expect you to pay money for this when other indie games that are much cheaper have so much effort and love put into them
@@toad7395 oh for sure, i am disappointed in the quality of the port we have gotten and wished it was better, but at the same time calling this a remaster when it was never marketed as such was my main issue.
Ah yes the "I am happy to be a coonsumer regardless if its shitty lazy product"
This type of people is the reason why Atlus keep getting away with this shit along with their stupid business practice.
@@zeroskaterz92 dont get me wrong, i am just as disappointed with the quality of the remake but at the same time, its a rerelease, not a remaster. They were not obliged to make the best possible port of persona 3 portable, just a working one
Man, a definitive version of the best of both P3P and FES is something I would really like to get into. If the modding community does it with P3P on Steam or even a hacked pirated version I'd be down for something like that.
"IT can be argued that Portable is better than P3FES-"
*Counter argument:* The Koromaru grabbing the remote cutscene is only in FES
make it the better version.
It's like they got the game on a psp and just recorded the audio it made on their phones from across the room at max volume
I'm so sad to hear this. I still prefer 4 and 5, but 3 was my intro to MegaTen as a whole and I'm definitely on the side of thinking Portable is the better version.
I remember playing FES for the first time during summer vacation in 2008, and I ended up beating it both regularly and on NG+ within a week. Portable was one of 2 games (the other being Birth By Sleep) that made me bother getting a PSP at all.
I don't have that PSP anymore, and I really wanted to have this game again, but after that montage of audio clips, I just can't. If this is how they treat a remaster of P3P, then I would kill off any hope of a decent re-release of Persona 1 and 2 at this point. They'll probably fuck it up even worse
really not because of MHFU?? P3P only exist for femc for me.
3:50 Ive never heard anyone claim that the wii/ps2 version is better.
And it's really not LOL
So I haven’t played through 3 until now. My only complaint. is I can’t control what traits transfer over. I love the point and click part, which I thought I was going to hate. Now that more people have played the game, that enjoyed 5. I would love to see a remake of 3 and 4.
We can only hope that the P3 Remake rumors are true :( I want a definitive edition with both FES and P3P content, both MC and FeMC routes, 3D maps and modern addons from 4 and 5. Please make it happen, Atlus!

I agree with Nyarly 100%. This is good for new players into the series, as more people can play the games. However, it's just a middle fingers to it's original fanbase. I finished P3F about a year or so back on an emulator with upscaling filters, Phoenix's New Mood Mod (which he is still tweaking to this day, 100% recommend it), and a party control mod on my big screen TV and it looked and played great. That I believe is the closest we're going to get to "definitive" version. If Atlus wakes up and says "Oh...we fucked this up..." and remasters the game to combine the best elements of both games, I'll take all this back. Given the lackluster (and that's being nice) Personal anniversary, and this decision...this is in my opinion, especially for current fans, I giant slap in the face...and I'm still stinging from it.
P3P on a PSP-3000 was my first experience on the Persona world. I remember playing it on my lunch breaks at work, even sneaking the PSP in my pocket to play in the bathroom when there was a low customer movement lol (I worked at a store on a mall, and weekday mornings barely had any customers at all). I cheered and cried with the characters, and was really surprised by ***SPOILER ALERT***
Ukutsuki's betrayal (and I'm usually pretty good at picking up characters that will turn on the heroes).
To this day, after having played through the Persona series, including P1 and the P2 duology, I still find P3 the better one by miles. The story went to such a deep layer of seriousness while still keeping that teen, maybe "pop" feeling during the social sim parts that I couldn't find any better fusion of these elements to this day. I tried getting into FES but I really cannot stand the AI controlled characters, and I really do think that those who say they like the Tactics gameplay are lying and actually just settled for it 😅, and that's why I loved when there was a mod/patch available that fixes that, as I do have a modded PS2.
Anyway, seeing such a masterpiece and a game so dear to me being treated this way is very disappointing. I've seen people mentioning P3 ever since P5 started turning mainstream, about how it should be remastered and how people that liked P5 would be blown by P3 and things like that, and I refuse to believe Atlus/Sega are so obvious to fan demand and fan opinion as to not have seen that... I'm really hoping for a 1.02 version correcting those flaws mentioned in this video as they did with Nocturn, but I'm not really expecting it though...
It's good for someone like me, I don't have time to sit down and play FES anymore. And I think this is a good intro to P3 for fans who have only played P5 on easy or normal (I've seen way too many people quit FES due to difficulty with grinding, lack of party control, etc). I also love having Kotone.
Although to be honest, it does feel like this port was rushed. And I hope the remake rumours are true, because it'd kind of explain this. Good way to generate hype/introduce newbies to the story and characters of Persona 3, making the (hopeful) announcement this summer a lot more exciting. Man, I hope those rumours are true...
Thanks for the comparison with the awakening scene. Holy crap, the second I heard Yukari speak I had to turn my audio down. It was so crunchy and harsh.
Losing the 3d exploration (and answer ig, for story) is fucking brutal to me. It really is wild they didn't make "P3 Definitive". I've been honestly dreading this rerelease because P3P is missing so much

So I am very much an FES fan over portable, I love that version to death, however when it came to putting a version on modern consoles... I am kinda glad it was portable. I can still play FES on the TV, just hook up my PS2 and off I go, but Portable, well emulation aside I was never able to play it on a big screen, until now. The quality of it is questionable but hey... I can finally check out the FemC version for the first time so... i'll take what I can get.
I already lost hope for this port when they announced that it was going to be a port of Portable. Yes, the female MC is a nice bonus and so were the quality of life improvements, but I still think that having a 3D world to do stuff in and the missing animated cutscenes make for a bigger and better spectacle, which is why if it's your first time playing Persona 3 I'd still recommend FES over Portable.
I can't imagine any new player deciding to buy this chopped up visual novel versus just playing P4G and P5R, which play like JRPGs.
I'd be so mad if I paid for P3P. It's such a shadow of the original.
@@drewb1979 I can imagine them buying this version, considering it's the only one you can really buy anymore.

It still doesn't have the female protagonist because they would have to account for changing ever minute thing make sure the male is referred to as a male and female is referred to as a female including text, voice lines, menus, images, anime videos, animations.
