Because of popular demand, Atlus has finally released an HD remaster of the popular cult-classic PS2 JRPG Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry Series) for Nintendo Switch and PS4, but they didn't do much beyond that.
In this video, I talk about some of the shortcoming of the remaster, what's changed, what wasn't changed, how the game runs and looks, and whether or not I think it is worth a buy when it comes out in English.

The fact that they use the compressed audio while having the audacity to release an ost makes this all the more insulting
The ost is actually compress lol.
@@ramburgervalentine7621 Yep especially the Level up and Terminal tracks. Some of them are genuine master tracks that didn't get released.
I don't even play SMT and I find it kind of insulting that they wouldn't even redo the cutscenes for a supposedly "fully remastered" game. It's like the shit Capcom pulled on Resident evil 4
@@areallyrealisticguyd4333 There's the possibility of the source files being lost. IIRC, JP companies that aren't Nintendo usually don't archive stuff after developing games. Doesn't excuse the music though, especially if those have official uncompressed versions released.

@@FreyOdyssey Ahh so thats why I cant find a physical copy of IV in my country I was literally interested in buying a 3DS for it and yet again there's no ESHOP IN MY COUNTRY so the only way to play IV IS EMULATED
If Nintendo is closing Eshop, then it's basically impossible for EU to play the game.
Just Let Me Die I am from Peru and I had the same problem. I suggest you to “cheat” and put that you are in the United States in the console configurations. I bought a few games like that.
@@cliffturbo2146 Devil Survivor OC would also become nigh unplayable as you cant download the patch that fixes the softlocking bug etc
I read in some interviews that they were absolutely obsessed with posterity and parity with the original version. They were actively avoiding changes from the original, hiring QA staff to make sure the game was as similar to the original as possible. I think we can tell with this attitude, that adding QoL changes and modern conveniences was something they were actively avoiding

Think they are misunderstanding what people wanted. Unfortunate. Atlus is pretty spectacular at some things, one of the best at a few, but also extremely poor at others and fairly egregious with DLC at an EA-lite level.
@@PathBeyondTheDark I guess they thought too many more changes and they'd get hate for it. I get that, but they could have put out a questionaire for fans
The Nocturne for steam will be basically: fans do what Atlus doesn't
If the game even makes it to steam
@@komi_san_is_god I'd be surprised if it didn't. I'm not sure if I want to buy it for any other platform now. I was planning on getting the switch version because I liked the idea of having it on a portable system, but now that it's apparent that the Switch performance is awful, Steam is the most "portable platform" for me, as I can just log in to a PC if I'm visiting someone and download the game there and get the save files from Steam Cloud. Or play it on a laptop.

@@_mako Yeah, tell me about it, there are even mods that add some content to the game...it's impressive.
If you have been following the news or leaks if you want to call it that, there have been someone on twitter who found a code in the SMT 3 Nocturne that lists STEAM alongside PS4 ans Switch, so I'd say at most the game "might" get released on STEAM alongside or after the west release
EDIT : Nevermind, it's been mentioned hahaha
I'm a time traveler, this is me coming to tell you that the voice acting is...okay
I’ll take your word for it
Lets just see if you're right.
I could see that being the case. I feel like Soul Hackers wasn't as impressive as Atlus's other English voice work.
If P3, P4 and P5 are any indication, we should expect some high quality VA for the most part. It's difficult finding many other JP games with Persona levels of voicework quality + quantity though... (maybe FF7:R).
Yo dm me lotto winnings for next year February kansas
if they remastered it in Unity, then that means that they rewrote the entire logic in Unity, that means someone had to implement the random skill inheritance, and not do anything about it

And at least for that it felt like some semblance of value since its 2 games in 1 (no I will not count dmc2)

In some cases for us in PAL regions its never!
i feel really bad for PAL tbh 😔
@@kittykat5090 When it comes to slowdown we don't have that issue nowadays, pretty much all TVs over here in the PAL region and releases here don't suffer from the old 50hz/60hz issue anymore, its still something to keep in mind for retro gamers but most of us over here try to play and use consoles in the NTSC format so we can have the full speed and no slowdown with older titles. When it comes to never getting releases, especially with certain companies like Atlus, its still rough but at least they're making more and more progress.

It's really disheartening to know that the HD Remaster has severe frame rate drops and compressed music EVEN THOUGH Altus released the uncompressed beautifully sounding OST like 10 years ago. What happened to this game?
The tracks on that original OST release were not full length, though, unlike in the game... I was hoping they would fix it this time.
Frame rate is only on the Switch. The footage I've seen of the ps4 looks butter smooth.

@@darkslayerdon2133 Because it's atlus.
Yeah, atlus has amazing games, but as a company, it isn't as great
@@darkslayerdon2133 Those were updated rereleases designed to expand on a relatively recent game. Nocturne is getting close to two decades old at this point, and isn't their cash cow brand. The fact that they didn't even hesitate to just outright cut Raidou out of the Chinese version of the game should say it all; they don't really care about SMT, just Persona.
@@UltLuigi1 yes, it is an old game, but also is one of their best known games, al least within the rpg genre it is known by virtually everyone. Europe : *Why are we still here? Just to suffer?*
Americans don't know our pain
Given we didn't even get HALF of the games Atlus brought out, let alone games from the likes of Square Enix, Nintendo, Sega, Konami and such back in the day to name afew, us in PAL territories have suffered far, far, FAR worse. Its sad that while region locking is becoming less and less of an issue, the fact we still have to even question if we're getting something now is just depressing.
Frame rate issues, still compressed soundtrack, no quality of life features such as choosing skills during fusion. What a shame. Should’ve just remade the whole game from the ground up.
Yep but Atlus are too lazy to remake the game
So disappointed... Rerolling skills during fusion takes so much time and it's nerve-wrecking when you can't get the skill you want. Lucky for games such as P4G and P5/R.
Yep this takes me back to all p3 variations all over again. That was a nightmare.
@@jovif.spemudaindonesia1841 yeah u may be right. They don't like remaking games but they sure love rereleasing them
@@byeebitch Don't forget about Persona Q and Q2! Those games let you choose skills, too!
I'm not buying into Atlus being somehow inept at translating. We live in an age where anime episodes are simulcast/subbed the day of release, vtubers can have 6 hour streams translated and subbed within the same day, and fucking Final Fantasy 7 Remake having a worldwide simultaneous release in multiple languages with multiple voice dubbing tracks. Let's not pretend Atlus is broke - they make BANK rereleasing every Persona game twice. This isn't a translating issue - its an Atlus issue expecting the thirsty fanbase to eat up whatever bullshit they put out.
They're adding english voice acting, add that with the pandemic, and I can see why it would be a problem. China and Korea don't have to wait because their versions just have the japanese voices.
Now, to nitpick the simulcast thing, they don't actually translate the episodes of anime in 1 hour. Translators get ahold of the literal script for the episode at least a week in advance. While you can get translations kinda fast, high quality professional-grade translations take time.
Atlus fans are truly the simps of the gaming world
A lot of people have pity parties for Atlus and I don't know why. Nocturne doesn't even have long cutscenes or that many instances of voice acting assuming generic npcs aren't voiced.
Atlus doesn't need to overcharge us for DLC either. At least when NIS does it they were on the verge of bankruptcy, but Atlus just does it because they know that fans will let them get away with scummy practices.
Lol Final Fantasy VII Remake wouldn't be my first choice as evidence for your argument..
Simulcast translation quality can be really spotty. Unless it's Funimation or something where they can get the script ahead of time. And that's really it, it's about coordinating with international teams. I feel Japanese developers don't really hand anything off until they have the game mastered and ready for production.
tl:dr this is not a remaster just a hd port with voice acting ,game journalist difficulty and some "make grind easy" dlc
Technically, Atlus are right. It's only an HD remaster. They weren't obliged to change the gameplay, performance or music.
But it would have been very, very nice.
to be fair they also had to rebuild the game in another engine because renderware died/EA
They didn't want to make any significant changes, but apparently still had few qualms about charging $50+ for what is basically just a reskin...
Then again, that's pretty much modern Atlus in a nutshell..!
I'm still astonished by the fact that smt2 is still not localized, even though 1 and 3 are already localized
but sadly not the ps1 version of smt1 tho
The SMT1 translation doesn't legally exist anymore.
I guess Atlus don't even bother since the game is fan translated already :DDD let the fans do some of the work i guess

Merciful difficulty sounds like the 'Enjoy the story' difficulty. In a game where, while the story is good, is mostly atmosphere with some cutscenes. 'Enjoy the story' is something that works more for games like the newer Persona games, where there's so much story and characters to focus on.
exactly, I can see why they would have this feature in like Nier: Automata for example, but in games like Smt or Persona, the difficulty is a part of the fun. Having to build a team and form strategies to win is what makes the games good
etrian odyssey does the same thing with pinic mode. it's basically a joke difficulty that's impossible to ever lose in and you can autobattle everything. eo at least has a story mode to look to but nocturne only offers like 5 minute blips every few hours, so besides grinding for the last magatamas i can't see a use for this, both casually and as a hardcore fan of the game
I kinda feel that way with Fire Emblem and the casual mode option
Being able to keep a character that died in combat in a game that was intended to make you feel the emotional weight for losing a comrade in the battlefield is just... weird to say the least

@@RonaldoVODS Smt varies in difficulty, the thing with building characters in 4 and persona is that you have to play on the highest difficulties cause if you don't any form of strategizing or building completely ruins the difficulty. That was explicitly the developer's intention. They wanted to make it easier to get all the endings.

This. This is why. Why would I buy half-assed "remaster" of a game when I can just emulate a 4k upscaled version of it that will almost no doubt look better? If companies are gonna push remasters, they should at least make an honest effort to improve the quality, not some lame retexturing and no game/menu changes. Idk mang, people are out of touch i guess

The emulated version does not even remotely -- not even the realm of pretend -- look "better" than any remaster. Upscaled assets and textures will never look better. The ONLY people who say emulators make old games look better than remasters, are people like you who actively DON'T buy remasters, so obviously you'd have no idea what they actually look like. Kinda funny how that works out eh?
So basically ATLUS is like any other nigh-independent Japanese company: slow (or outright refusal) to embrace new innovations.Yeah.... "remastered" Japanese games typically mean you have what you exactly had when it first came out years ago and that's it. Only thing changes is the platform (PS2 -> Switch). I have a bunch of old Final Fantasy games on Steam, plus _rEmAsTeReD_ Dark Souls to quickly get what's really going on.
Try doing business with a Japanese company somewhere and you'd understand; they're slow at everything in general. It's not just a ATLUS problem, it's a culturally Japanese problem.

i think a lot of people want the original ported to a new console with better graphics though. they don't like their nostalgia to get butchered. plus, it's a chance for new players to enjoy a game in its original form.
@@DengueBurger true but if the goal is to propose "play the original" it s not that difficult to just make an emulation in the newest console(like virtual console in nintendo product).I don't know how the switch or p are coded so there might be bugs that arise from that but at the end of the day a console is a computer and can emulate(how good can it do it may be a problem though)
Dragon’s Dogma isn’t like this. Shoot, it didn’t even brand itself a “remaster” when it ended up on PS4, Xbox Once, and Switch, but it looks and performs WAY better than the original version
@@DengueBurger Don't say based, that's fucking cringe
Again with the culture explanation which is a tautology that explains nothing. Grow a brain.
What makes me upset, is that when 3HD fails outside of japan; (which it will because not only is it a full price port with no new content, but it's also releasing close to SMTV which more newcomers will prefer to wait for) Atlus will most likely decide not to re-release any other older megatens and that sucks. I like Nocturne, and the idea of playing it on something stronger than my shitty 12 yr old laptop is nice, but man......who knows maybe they'll have paid dlc for new content......
Its probably not going to be fully priced. Japanese versions of the games are always overpriced. Catherine Full Body on the switch is $75 on the Japanese eShop but $50 in the west. Persona 5 Royal is $90 on the Japanese PSN Store, but $60 in the west. This'll probably end up somewhere between $30-$40.
PCSX2 is very hardware demanding, im finding it hard to believe a 12 year old laptop could emulate Nocturne in a playable state.
@@TheSonic497 it got the work done.... it isnt really 12 years old tho. It's just trash
As long as it does well in Japan it will be fine (to Atlus), and it will have at least a few months before they get SMTV there. I am also concerned that this game won't do well outside of Japan, but maybe the nintendo direct push and general goodwill toward Nocturne will help it sell decently...
Debut sales for physical in Japan was 100k. That's pretty decent sales for Japan and Atlus' priority when it comes to a successful title is always Japan. So Nocturne remaster having good sales alone in Japan is enough for to consider bringing older SMT games and whatnot.

If I understand the japanese patch notes correctly, the latest patch for the remaster added the option to choose skills during fusion! (or at least to directly reroll on the results page? It's phrased sort of weird) Can anyone confirm this?
If this is true - fuck yeah! Now they only need to re-render the cutscenes so they're no longer crunchy as hell, add uncompressed audio and maybe a harder difficulty and the remaster is perfect... that's never gonna happen. Still though - really, really cool!
You can do both.
You can select the skills yourself with triangle

I agree. And it worked too. It's already sold more copies in the first week than the PS2 version of the game did in Japan.
@@coolcool5181 That's not true. The HD Remaster sold 100,000 copies on its first week. The PS2 vanilla version sold 150,000 copies on its first week, and around 250,000 copies overall. The PS2 Maniax version did sell 80,000 copies overall.

*Laughs in Yakuza 5*
Yeah, Falcom's Ys and Trails games take 1-2 YEARS to come out after the Japanese release.
have you considered the delay wasn't a localization issue but rather a marketing decision? for instance perhaps seeing how it sells in japan first or even data collection to see what needs to be fixed (cause it really seems very few game companies even bother to play test thier games before shipping out broken products anymore)
i guess that the translation problems come from SEGA taking over localization, when Atlus localized their games they were only available in english but since Sega adquired them they have been translating their games to more langauges.
I think Nocturne also has a confirmed spanish translation, so it´s not the same previous as MegaTen games.

Remember when Atlus basically made like half a game with Persona 3 Portable's female protagonist? P3P was like a game and a half, given how much stuff FeMC has that Makoto doesn't. Most games that let you choose your gender barely change anything between the two. Usually it's just stuff like: who you can date/marry, different characters exclusive to that gender, etc. P3P did that and so much more.
Since I play Persona since the first part I can say P3P is my favorite Persona game. I enjoy a female perspective
> "makoto"
Cringe. There are no canon names. The games wouldn't have so many options to adopt your own name, personality and choices if there was ever an intent to have a "canon" / "correct" version of events.

Atlus listened! You can now randomize skills with Square, and, get this, YOU CAN FINALLY SELECT WHICH SKILLS YOU WANT (with Triangle).
So for $10 I can get a Dante costume, or a digital copy of the entire original game. Hmmmm
I can say that it is likely at least some of the Scramble delay is due to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity being way higher on their priority list. You pointed out that they've been working their asses off to get HW out in a timely manner, and I def don't expect them to do that plus Scramble during a global pandemic and I'm not surprised a Persona spinoff was pushed back in favor of a literal prequel to Breath of the Wild.
It's also simply the difference between Nintendo money and Atlus money; Nintendo's gonna push their shit out when they want it out, pandemic or no. They'll make absolutely certain they create a safe environment for their localization team and get it done ASAP. They have the money to do that. Atllus not only doesn't have that sort of money, they also consistently underestimate the impact of their games in the West. Nintendo is a worldwide sensation and household name, and while they've gained popularity in recent years, Atlus still develops relatively niche games designed predominantly for a Japanese market, whether they're owned by SEGA or not. Likely they and Koei Tecmo WANT to get Scramble out in the West, but there's too much else going on right now. Underestimating the effects that a pandemic has on a company that already takes forever to localize products is pretty foolish.
Gamers cant connect the dots and use common sense. They’d rather cry and shit themselves over having to wait a bit to play a game instead of playing the 100’s they still have untouched
@@PunishedPrince you replying to a different comment, my guy?
regardless, a company should make their best attempts to release versions with alternate languages within a month or two at most of the original release. It's especially ridiculous to forecast a near half-year wait for a game that's already been translated.

Hello! Just trying Nocturne for the first time (remaster was on sale for $35 with a it's DLC) and it's been fun! Been having slowdown on the Steam version whenever spells like sukukaja is used on 3 or more targets, so that's mildly annoying but it's been fun besides that.
I really would have loved it if they just improved the main character's skill system. Like Digital Devil Saga's version where you get every skill you learn but can equip only 4-8(based on character level) but you could try all kinds of interesting combos.

@@iker-jk2096 The music problem kinda sucks, but the framerate being a problem is actually unacceptable. I will still buy it cause I really wanna play the game on modern hardware and fight Raidou. Also I think if the Merciful difficulty is as described by Nyarly, tbh that sounds like it would make buying Magatama and Demon Compendium charges not a pain in the ass and the much lowered encounter rate that MT tends to be infamous for is actually something I very much would like. I can just toggle Normal to easy at any time. Admittedly these qualms I have is part of the reason I dont like Nocturne that much. I still think this remaster deserves better. But this sounds it could be the better version gameplay wise if they fix the framerate.
No need for the "kind of".
It's a dissapointment, yeah it's nice to be able to play the game in newer consoles, but even for a remaster it doesn't make a lot, and for what I read it has things that are even worse than the original.
It's cool that we can play it and even better for new fans with better graphics, and the voice acting sounds nice, but it's not that big of a deal.
69th like.
I'm hoping the price is at MOST 40$ because this is like a 20$ value for this remaster. If they keep the price low than the expectations for this will be much lower for the game. I still think that the compressed audio and cutscenes ripped straight from the ps2 version is still unexcusable though.

Not just Atlus, but I've noticed Nintendo, and NIS' America's quality get worse over the last decade. It's a disposable market now, there's hardly any passion.
Nintendo is the biggest offender of this, bar none. This is painful to say, especially as a lifelong Nintendo loyalist.
Apart from the terrible market decisions, limited releases and bad online, how is Nintendo getting worse? The switch has their best line up of games since the 3DS back in 2012.
As a company, yeah they have gotten worse. But as game publishers? They keep getting better.

@@Robotta Look at how many ports they have on Switch that they charge full price for, and then subsequently remove from the WiiU eshop. The joycon hardware lawsuits and Nintendo outright denying there's any kind of defect while offering free repairs, for said defect. Their hardware QA is seriously lacking compared to previous generations, there's videos out there of wiis and gamecubes surviving crazy falls and the Switch can't survive a few knocks from chest height. The thing outright frys itself being charged in a non 1st party dock; they coded it that way so consumers have to buy an overpriced dock. Do you not remember how bad the Switch's launch was?
They're as bad as apple now, entirely anti consumer. Those 3 points you mentioned are huge, especially the marketing practices; they constantly sell lackluster ports for MORE than their competitors. Look at the recent case with the one user on reddit who sent his Switch out for repairs and they sent him back a BANNED console; which took a massive twitter/front page campaign to even get corrected. They ignored him for months.

They really gave this game the 3d all-stars treatment
atleast 3D All Stars had remastered cutscenes, the music wasn't compressed, and it had no frame rate issues.

Wait how did you get merciful difficulty I have the game for PS4 and I do not see that option?????????
This could’ve been a really good remaster, especially for how awesome V sounds like it’s going to be. They didn’t have to go totally all out, but ATLUS Could’ve added a HD soundtrack, and reworked the frame rate, and they could’ve added a explanation of the skills when you view the stats screen. And localize the limited edition. For a company that has over 500 Billion¥ it sounds like a simple task.
They should've added the battle against seraph and the other crewmates in the remaster. I wanted to see it in demi-fiend's pov.
So I’m rewatching after the English release and I don’t own the game myself yet, but Dante and Gouta (raidou’s talking cat buddy) got some pretty good voice acting, they even rewrote Dante’s lines to fit his post dmc3 characterization which is a detail I didn’t think they would add.
