    My dad was a sailor in WW2 . All the ships of that era were full of asbestos as well as lead paint. He left the navy in 1956 and went to work for the railroad as a machinist. The huge shop that he worked in until he retired at 65 was also insulated with asbestos. He died at age 84 from heart failure. The hoopla over asbestos is way overblown.

    • @LordMuck
      @LordMuck  2 года назад +3

      The guys building and decommissioning the ships were at risk but those working around it were at a much lower risk.

    I have spent many years working in a engine shop and have crack tested many blocks and heads using the method shown in your video but one of the most effective ways we have found is to simply bond flat metal plates over the water galleries ,one plate has an adapter for the air line .use either regular loctite superglue or a hot glue gun to bond the plates and pressurise to about 50psi , Now you can either submerge the work piece in warm water or simply cover it in soapy water from a squirty bottle .this method picks up 99% of cracks . The David Brown dozzer gets my vote :)

    Back in the day you put paraffin on the item for checking let it soak then wiped it off and then sprinkled powdered chalk over it, any cracks would show up as the chalk dew the paraffin out of the crack. Also back in early 1970's I bought al old petrol paraffin Nuffield that had stood in an orchard for a few years with the cylinder head off, all I did was emery paper the bores lap the valves and put the head back on started it up and drove it five mile home, ( I did not know better back then) it ran perfectly for years I only sold it when I moved from Cambridgeshire too Norfolk and decided it was not worth the cost of transporting it 50 odd miles.

      I watched some lads in the Ivory Coast when I was in West Africa clean up a crank on a Cummins 555 with some emery cloth, surrounded by dirt and dust and it ran ok. I've seen some old boys use chalk and paraffin like you say 👍

    Thank the Sweet Lord Baby Jesus!! Someone addresses the difference between "stuck" and "seized"!!! Good Lord some RUclipsrs use those two terms interchangeably and REALLY REALLY want to pat themselves on the back for freeing a "seized" engine when in reality it had a condensation ring and was hung up or stuck. Seized means it's basically all grown together into the same part number 😂... If it's truly seized it's only coming apart with a complete teardown...if you can actually get it apart.
