Marvel sold movie rights to Spiderman to Sony when they were in financial trouble. They also sold rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four to Fox. Disney got those when they bought Fox.

    • @MarquisTidwell

And Universal has The Hulk, which is why there haven't been any Hulk solo movies. They can use him in ensemble films and team ups.
They got most of there properties back with the Fox deal, but Sony is gonna hold on to that Billion Dollar Spider as long as they can.
There's some cool videos on RUclips that explain the whole situation, but it's glad that Sony and Marvel have been able to work together to bring us these amazing movies.
Toby and Andrews movies had diminishing returns with each sequel and bringing Spidey under MCU creative has been the best decision they could have made.

    • @glennwelsh9784
      @glennwelsh9784 Год назад +4

Yeah, Marvel Comics was going bankrupt in the 90's and they didn't have their own movie studio. So they sold the movie rights for lots of their most popular characters to major Hollywood movie studios. Sony Pictures bought Spider-Man, Universal Studios bought Hulk, and Twentieth Century Fox bought the X-Men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four. This allowed Marvel Comics to make enough cash to pull themselves out of bankruptcy and ultimately create their own studio in 2008 - Marvel Studios.
Marvel Studios could now make movies from the characters they still owned the movie rights to, like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, leading to team-up movies like The Avengers. However, as long as Sony had Spider-Man and Fox had X-Men, those characters couldn't appear in any Marvel Studios films, though certain exceptions would be made. For example, Universal still owns Hulk, but they collaborated with Marvel Studios to make The Incredible Hulk movie starring Edward Norton, and they've allowed Hulk to appear in crossover movies like The Avengers. But Marvel Studios can't make another Hulk movie without Universal's approval and involvement. But then Disney bought Marvel in 2012 and then bought Fox in 2019, so now Disney owns the movie rights of most of Marvel's characters, aside from Hulk and Spider-Man of course.
Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Man, and as long as Spider-Man is still making them a fortune, they will never give up those rights. But after the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield movies petered out (heh), they saw how successful the MCU had become and decided to cut a deal with Disney/Marvel to bring Spider-Man into the MCU with a series of new solo movies starring Tom Holland and letting him into crossover movies like Captain America: Civil War, just as long as Sony gets to keep most of the profits from the new Spider-Man solo movies.

    • @txheadshots
      @txheadshots Год назад

The deal is that they have to make a movie every so often or lose the rights.. which is why Garfield’s Spider-Man exists - Sony had to make a movie or lose the rights
The other contract issue they are dealing with is that certain characters are locked into certain actors … so they can’t make another XMen movie for a couple years still or they have to use McAvoy as Professor X, etc… so they are trying to renegotiate those contracts

This is one of my top favorite movies in Phase 3.
We got just the right amount of Tony Stark in this movie. He was there when needed. And his on-screen chemistry with Tom Holland is fantastic.
That moment on the bridge with Peter and Tony is such a great scene. When he said "if you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it" was such a great quote. And Tony knows what it's like to be without his suit, because he spent most of "Iron Man 3" without his suit and had to work being a hero without it.
Michael Keaton as Adrian Tomes aka the Vulture was perfect casting. And the twist that he was Liz's dad was something not many saw coming.
Ned, Peter's "guy in the chair" is such a great character. And so is Zendaya's MJ.
Looking forward to "Thor: Ragnarok" up next in the MCU. And looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

He is and idk why people can’t accept that, he is the most comic accurate. It’s mostly to nostalgia but Idk how if they are a Spider-Man fan and knows everything about the character how they can say that he isn’t the most accurate, it’s crazy.
Who is the only one out of the three that started as the character started in the comics at 15yrs old? Tom
Who is the only one out of the three that looks age appropriate and has a real teen personality? Tom
He created his own web formula, web shooters and suit.
And unlike the others he is good at both Peter and Spider-Man. He had the awkwardness and nerdy side of Peter and the confidence and quips of Spider-Man.
On top of that he has the best acted scenes and is the only one with a successful trilogy so that’s a plus.
Idc how his haters feel about his movies, but as the CHARACTER Tom Holland is the most comic accurate.
And idk if it’s true but there’s rumors that he just signed a deal that he will be the leading role of Avenger’s The Kang Dynasty so that’s interesting if it’s true.

A while ago, Marvel was going thru financial hard times (because people weren't buying comic books). To keep the company going, Marvel sold the movie rights to some of their characters (X-Men, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Blade, Ghost Rider, Daredevil) to other movie companies. Sony bought the rights to Spiderman and will keep owning the rights as long as they make a Spiderman (or Spiderman related... like Venom, Morbius, etc) movie every 2 years (This is where Tobey Spiderman came from and why Andrew Garfield movies were made so soon... every 2 years to keep rights). Marvel later again hit hard financial times and took all of their remaining money and made a hail mary play and made the first Iron Man movie, it was a success and they stayed in business, and the MCU was created. Sony owns the rights to Spiderman, but the movies they made were not as successful as the movies Marvel was making with the MCU, so Marvel and Sony made a deal where Marvel would write and produce the Tom Holland Spiderman movies and Sony would keep all of the profits in exchange for Spiderman to appear in upcoming MCU movies (similar to Civil War). A few years ago Disney (who owns Marvel) bought 20th Century Fox and regained the movie rights to X-Men, Wolverine, Deadpool and Fantastic Four (all coming soon to the MCU). [NOTE = Universal still owns the solo movie rights to Hulk, which is why there has not been another solo Hulk movie (Universal made the one that came after Iron Man) Hulk can appear in MCU movies, but cannot star in his own solo film for Marvel.] The deals for Ghost Rider, Blade and Daredevil have expired and Marvel now has the rights back (coming soon to the MCU).

Sony made Spiderman in 2002 and Fox made Xmen in 2000 and Fantastic Four came out in 2005. Iron Man didn't come out until 2008. Marvel movies didn't exist when they licensed Spiderman, Fantastic Four & Xmen. The Xmen license came with the right to the word mutant which is why they are never called mutants in the Marvel world. Also the Xmen use Adamantium as the hardest element and Marvel uses Vibranium. However, Disney has recently purchased Fox Studios so they will reclaim the licenses for Fantastic Four and Xmen. Sony still owns the Spiderman license, but they have made the 3 Tom Holland movies in concert with Marvel Studios so they have more of a Marvel feel with Avengers characters integrated in the storylines.

Just a little FYI.

If you ever wanna see some cool Spider-Man comics take a look at the 2000's series "Ultimate Spider-Man" which creates a new version of the character, some things are different and some things stay the same. It's not the same universe as the main Spidey comics, this version of Peter acts about the same, faces all the classic baddies, but then there's stuff that really sets it apart in interesting ways, and it's paced very well. The scene of Peter reading off fat jokes to enrage Kingpin is classic. While the original 60's stories focus on him growing into a better hero, with the character himself sometimes feeling more like a young adult then the teenager he starts off as, Ulitmate Spider-Man puts much more focus also on his growth as a 15 year old trying to find his place in the world, he's prone to lashing out, but you at the end of the day that he's a good kid.
Also check out this 1990's comic series, "Untold Tale Of Spider-Man", they were new stories written to take place inbetween the various classic 60's adventures. Before Untold Tales there were also three issues of Amazing Fantasy, yep, in the 60's Spidey make his debut in it's last issue before it was ended, and in the 90's it was brought back for 3 issues all about Spidey taking place after the origin but before the fiirst issue of his series, Issue 16, 17, and 18.
There this really cool 5 issue storyline called "Learning To Crawl" which takes the same idea, showing this story of Spider-Man learning how to be a better hero, and gaining his sense of humor as he goes up against a villain he's responsible for creating, Clash, who can use sound itself to attack the web-head. It's Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 Issues 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5.
For a good two issue story I'd recommend one called Unscheduled Stop which unfolded in Issue 578 and 579 of The Amazing Spider-Man where he has to tangle with The Shocker while saving a trainload of people in a crumbling tunnel.
Oh yes, and as for the classic 60's comics? The Amazing Spider-Man comics are still really good, the only problem is they're very wordy, I think comics used to do that so it'd take longer to finish reading them, so it felt like you got your money's worth for an issue, it's Stan Lee writing the dialogue and heavily plotting the early stories, and Steve Ditko doing the art and a fair amount of plotting as the series goes on. Spidey's origin story was Amazing Fantasy Issue 15, and his second appearence is The Amazing Spider-Man Issue 1 and so on. The scene in this movie of Spider-Man lifting the heavy rubble off of him in that big triumphant way is taken from the last part of a three part storyline called if this be my destiny which unfoled in Issue 31, 32, and 33. It was a comic scene that even impressed Stan Lee, who had no idea Steve Ditko was going to put so much attention and emphasis on the build up to his escape. The scene is something of a Spidey classic, before this movie it was adapted in an episode of Spectacular Spider-Man, and after this movie it was adapted in an episode of Marvel Spider-Man. In many more recent versions of Spider-Man the other heroes act as mentors to him, where as in these classic stories outside of being friends with The Human Torch, he's more of an outsider, and has to figure these things out on his own.
Hope this helps you if you ever wanna read some Spider-Man stuff.

I can help explain the Sony thing. Back in the day before they made Marvel Studios, Marvel used to sell the rights to their heroes to individual movie studios whenever they want to make a movie. So they had to buy the rights back now that they have their own movie making studio or wait for rights to expire. Marvel acquired the rights to their heroes in some cases one by one over the years. But Sony is the last hold out along with Universal for Hulk. (When it comes to Hulk, Disney already has a deal to let him be included in MCU movies.) But technically Sony is smart because they know Spider-Man is a huge property. Spider-Man supposedly makes more money than all other Marvel properties combined. So Sony knows this so they don't sell their rights yet.

"EIGHT YEARS LATER" is a chronological error. Since The Avengers took place in 2012, that would put this movie in 2020, which doesn't make sense since Civil War happens in 2016, and this movie clearly happens right after Civil War. And as you will learn in upcoming movies, there are also HUGE events that occur before 2020 that don't add up at all with this movie. So the "EIGHT YEARS LATER" text at the beginning is clearly a production mistake. There are only four years between The Avengers and Homecoming.

It's best to not try to correlate the other versions to any new version. They always play with things. For instance both Gwen and Mary Jane came in to the comics after high school, and Peter specifically met her and Harry Osborn when he first started college. Raimi and some cartoons gave us MJ as the girl next door he's known since they were little. Etc. So they just sorta give little tweaks like that here and there between versions.

Hopefully this isn’t the 100yh time someone has commented this, but the reason the spider man movies aren’t on Disney plus is because Sony bought the movie rights to spider man and his rogues gallery back in the 90’s cuz marvel comics was on the verge of going bankrupt.
BUT, part of the deal was that Sony has to make a spider man movie every 5 years and 3 months or so or the rights revert back to marvel. That’s why Sony had to sometimes put out stuff in a rush or reboot the series when spider man 3 didn’t go so well, etc. but then with civil war they worked out that deal with marvel studios so Marvel can have spider man in mcu movies and pay for and make those ones, and Sony can pay for and make the spider movies and borrow characters like dr strange, iron man etc.
Sorry, long answer. Incredible Hulk isn’t on Disney plus because of movie rights with universal, who distributed that film w Edward Norton. But rumor has it that Marcel is getting the hulk movie rights back this year

So when Marvel comics almost went bankrupt in the 1990s they sold off a lot of their properties to raise some money to save the company. The most popular characters at the time were Spider-Man and the X-Men (Sony got the rights to Spider-Man and Fox got the rights to X-Men). Marvel kept the rights to the Avengers because characters like Iron Man, Thor and Cap weren't that well-known and movie studios weren't really interested in them, so years later when Marvel set up their own studio, they could only use the Avengers' characters for the MCU. Since then, Disney have bought Marvel and Fox so now they can use the X-Men in the MCU, and Disney and Sony made a deal to allow Spider-Man to also appear.

Your enthusiasm with this one, makes me so happy. I can´t wait to you to see next two ones. They just get better and better. It took me time to admit that this version of Spider-man is my fave in movie Version. Closely followed by rest. I really like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield aswell. I won´t comment into the Spider verse more than I really liked Miles Morales there as I am not yet sure if you have seen it.
