  • Lot's of learning in this weeks episode. If you are planning to build one of these hopefully you watch this episode, there is a lot of information here. Revisiting my solder choice for the brass and more solder strength testing.

The mahogany looks great. For the soldering on the brass you probably need more heat. If you are not using MAPP gas try that. Brass acts as a heat sink and pulls away from the solder joint faster than steel. If you get the brass hot enough it will melt the solder and not the torch. Great builds on all you guitars. I also enjoy the test videos. Keep them coming.

James it was a blast visiting with you. I didn't even realize it was that long. Two total guitar geeks needing out. It was a very enjoyable evening. That reso is a beautiful thing looking forward to hearing the demo.
I was thinking during our visit that you would need more heat for the brazing rod than the little torch. Prolly oxcy acetylene. But the heat would be too much for the thin material.
Anyway just wanted to relate to everyone how nice and fast the neck is and how very playable the guitar is.
also the mahogany binding really looks sweet for #3. But I like the steel binding as well. Maybe Stainless if you're worried about rust. oh and that reminds me, I wouldn't worry much about the lead in the solder. The whole lead thing is based on parts per million in drinking water. I mean I know about lead paint and all that, just saying, laying your arm on the guitar is not like drinking water from lead pipes or chewing on lead paint.

The mahogany looks great.. I wonder if tortoise binding would look good? With the mixing of metals I would be concerned about galvanic corrosion, especially using steel with others.

I've never used tortoise binding, that might be interesting. I was curious about mixing metals as well. It looks like the brass and copper will be relatively ok but the brass and mild steel not as much. I'm expecting the mild steel to corrode next to the brass. That's partly why I wanted to make that box thing so it could just sit around and I can observe the reactions over time. I haven't tested my mahogany to brass connection strength yet either, need to make sure I have that attached well enough.

@@Ninety2guits the experiments are fantastic research, and I'm glad we get to see them too, because I'm learning so much along with you. The dissimilar metal thing interests me, because we can copper or brass plate steel.. why doesn't that corrode? Lol, metal work is like the dark arts to me!

I am personally clueless, but I watch Blondihacks channel. She is building a copper boiler for a model steam engine and needs to reheat some joints. She uses a higher temperature solder on the earlier joint so she can solder with a lower temperature later without damaging the joint. May be worth investigating for your purposes.

Comments like this make all the effort of doing videos worth it. I don't think I ever would have thought of that. Genius!

Very Cool!, 100% wood binding, looks amazing, check out JB Weld, they have a brown epoxy for wood, it'll blend better or clear tbh. I'd really look into making wood grid work, for the sound holes? maybe get it CNC'd, imagine those sound holes with wood, and the binding...amazing!

Buck, I had not thought of doing the grills as wood. I'm really liking that idea. Thank you Thank you!!!

There is a product called brazing tape. Its tacky like a weak two sided tape. It acts as a flux and filler. Just tape and heat. It may be a solution to hide the difference in color between bond and brass.
