It comes across like a banjo I think due to the lousy microphone. It's definitely a way different sound than the steel one. I think most of it is the brass one has a much smaller body than the steel one. It's light and comfortable to play but you can definitely tell a difference in tone. The brass one reminds me of the National I had. There is a lot to learn from these two instruments, it is great to get that experience and see/hear the different results.
Thanks Cole. Dang I forgot I was going to share what we are working on. I get focused on finishing a video and forget to include all kinds of cool stuff. Maybe next video.
I used to play a brass resorocket for years, something in the tone of your instrument reminds me of it. Brass is great for subtle playing styles. Congratulations it's absolutely fabulous!
That's exactly what it reminds me of. I learned so much from this build as far as sound goes. This is a much smaller body both size and depth that the steel one, it's amazing how much it affected the tone. I like the brass one, it's jangly and very alive sounding in person, and loud, very loud.
Been waiting for your video come out and see all done and playing. Awesome job on all your guitar builds. I like the steel guitar . Keep on building more enjoy watching videos .
I really like them both. I like the cutaway design much better though and I am with you, the steel one sounds amazing! It far exceeds the tone of the brass just for me and the music that I play. I cannot wait to build one myself :)
I haven't checked in for a while but its good to be back... I really dont know what I like best, your humour, your builds or playing. Oh its good to be back.
Simon!!!! I knew I was missing some great input. Glad to have you back. I went for a brushed finish on this one so I could avoid all that polishing Lol!
All of these guitars have been amazing James. Your videos are top notch, jammed with good info. Which is what this is all about. And they go down easy with your humor and wit. I'd love to see what you do to the LP and the Tele both.
Me either :). I check in on Dave at TDPRI once in a while. I've been a huge fan of Dave since he used a ladle to apply finish to one of his challenge builds Lol!!! I sure miss the comradery we had going over there, it was great fun and we learned so much.
Looks sweet James! Are you going to do an amplified comparison? Haven’t been on TDPRI in a year or so. Many good life changes and am starting to find time to wind again. Hope all is well. Rob
He's in Arizona now and seems to be really enjoying it. I'll try and get the message to Rob unless Yeknom intercepts the message and does Yeknom things with it :)
Both are beautiful guitars, but i love the steel No 2, that thing sounds amazing! Wow, Barncaster! That name brings back a lot of memories from TDPRI, im glad hes doing well with his pickups.
@@Ninety2guits I've been interrupted several times by life the universe and everything but I've done the rough routed top carve on my purpleheart Tele from your plans. When it gets a scosche cooler out I'll get back on it.
Whoa...the brass sure sounds different than the steel! It looks gorgeous but to be honest I prefer the sound of #2. Please do show us your work on the Les Paul!
Hi James, great video ( as always) and a fine looking guitar at the end of it. Not sure about the wood/brass edge, it looks ok but will it last? I was wondering if a copper ‘ hockey stick ‘ would bend round the curves without distorting? You might have to use a lower temp solder than the body ? Also, how about the truss rod cover made of thin slices of the same contrasting woods as the neck? With a big chamfered edge to show of the grain. Looking forward to your next build Pete T
I think the wood binding will last pretty well, I liken it to the wood binding on an acoustic guitar. It can easily be replaced/repaired if needed. Honestly I'm more worried about one of the grills getting punched out of it, but those are also easily replaced I spose. I do want to do a soldered metal binding at some point, I've been looking at different temp solders or trying to figure out a way to hold it all in place and solder all 3 pieces together at once. That would definitely be a longer lasting tougher solution and there are a lot of cool metal combinations that would look awesome. Part of me thinks people just want to see the traditional styles and it's a small audience of people who like this custom stuff. Anyway it was all great learning for me. I wish I would of thought of that truss rod cover idea, it could easily match the heel of the neck which has some crazy cool detail. I guess it's not too late. I'm trying to understand what I've learned from these two different builds, there is a lot to process now that I have the two to compare. The smaller body brass one really changed the overall tone dramatically. I'm really curious to make a brass 14 fret version and do some more comparison. This could take years :).
I think so, still trying to focus on the learning curve of building metal bodies, no need to add the complication of a Tri-cone yet, but it's definitely coming down the road. Thank you.
Horray! Looks fantastic - all that work has certainly paid off in spades. A unique instrument indeed. You deserve to be proud. And, of course, it sounds great. I have to say though that I do get what you say about #2 (the steel one) - that one sounds fantastic, and you playing it with fingerpicks is the right way. These resos don't sound very good to me played with flatpicks strumming chords. That's just me.
Thanks Rod. I agree, I tend to want to just flatpick a song for the video since that comes easy to me but I know that won't do the guitars justice. I'm really looking forward to the next build because it will be the same brass I used on this one but it is a larger body so I expect to learn a ton about the tone of these things and have a bunch more data points to compare. I think it will be a nice blend of the two and should pick up some low end response with the larger body. Hopefully I can keep the high end jangly awesome resonator vibe that this one has. Sure wish the tones came through better on the videos, they are much different in person.
@@Ninety2guitsvery much looking forward to the next reso build - it's great that you've got a commission to build a custom model. I like your playing btw - I wish I could use fingerpicks....
Agreed. The brass one has a much smaller body and is way less responsive to the low notes. On the flip side the steel one doesn't have the brilliance and jangly vibe that the brass one has. The next build I'm hoping will be a perfect blend of the two. It will have a larger brass body so expecting good results.
The brass one sounds more like a banjo sonically, and that's pretty amazing.

It would be good to see both the Les Paul repair and the telecaster body being made
Awesome build, the brass and the steel both have a great sound. Looking forward for the Les Paul video, I have a similar Les Paul Studio.
Love it. Needs a brass pickup cover.
Totally amazing builds. You sir are my hero.
Thank you, hero might be a bit too far though Lol!

Thank you Dane and thanks for the tips on the oil witch brew concoction. Took a few tweaks to get it good but I love it.

"Good on ya mate" as we say down here at the bottom of the world. But PLEASE : Where's the slide demo. ?
And what was in that witche's brew of linseed oil and eye of newt?
Yes, that and also some fairy vomit and just a pinch of uranium. Worked great Lol!
Not a fan of the resonator sound but it's sure fascinating watching you build them.
I’m assuming you sell your guitars, special order. I cannot find you on the web. All I get are hits for your RUclips channel. How do I inquire?
