The cover plate with the holes is cool. I like copper for the guard and tailpiece.

I agree with this guys opinion. Brass plate you made with holes. Copper tail piece and biscuit cover. The off set is prrfect

I wish you had a copper cover plate because it’s colour is consistent with the mahogany features. My vote would be for a copper cover plate with brass bridge and tailpiece.

My vote is all bell brass, looks the nicest. Try to put tuners with pearl buttons or mahogany. Once it al polished, you'll be happy you stuck with all brass.

I like the brass on brass best ( especially your simple holed cover plate) but don’t be too influenced by others. I think I may have said before that , although they don’t have wedges under the f/board , many resos have a wedge inside, between the neckstick and top. This distorts the top a little but makes the f/board straight. Most resos have small props from the back to the neckstick, ( usually a 2” ply circle with a 3/4” dowel) One close to the neck and one under the start of the well.
    Pete T.
    Lovey work ,as usual
StewMac did do a blueprint of a ‘traditional ‘ reso , I think I have a copy if you would like it.......probably a bit late ,as you have found your own way of doings things that seem to work just fine

I forgot about this comment. I am familiar with the mushroom posts, I would like to do some experimenting to see if/how they affect sound. I have a mile long list of things I want to test to gain understanding, just need more hours in the day :). I didn't know some had wedges under the top. I was looking at Nationals recently and the necks were dead flat with no wedge. It was at a music store and the owner didn't like my offer to tear one apart so we could see inside lol!!! It's hard to tell what neck angle if any national uses. The break over angle on those new nationals is very minimal, I'm starting to wonder if I'm over thinking the break over angle. Somebody recently sent me the StewMac plan, I need to study it a bit more. Always appreciate your input Pete. Thank you.

There's plenty gooing on already with this guitar (which I mean as a compliment) - brass on brass looks good to me. Adding another colour (brass or steel) is maybe a bridge too far IMHO. I think the simplicity of the cover plate with the orbital holes is what is needed here.
I know it's already been mentioned below, but as you were talking I did think that a wooden guard/palmrest might be nice to match the binding and bout grating.

Yeah this is coming along great, I like the holes coverplate. My vote is for the brass coverplate, copper handrest and copper tailpiece, givers a nice contrast and compliments the binding and neck.

Good video James, I'd say all copper or the steel options on the copper looked pretty good. And then you could use the chicken foot cover.

To my eye, the mixed colors give it a sorta "kit" appearance. But pay me no mind. I'm not noted for my esthetic taste. I'm a first time viewer, and that's mighty fine work.

I am glad you mentioned the kit appearance, this comment stuck with me the last couple weeks and I agree. Probably why I decided on the brass handle. Thanks for watching.

My cover-plate vote goes: steel chicken-foot cover-plate with brass bridge-cover and brass saddle.

Ok here's my one Bob.. hydro the real brass after a better design with a router, then copper thingys on that.... inlayed mother of pearl to match the neck, and gold plate the strings.. and you can trust me because .. um.. I will have to get back to you on that reason..

I think the brass coverplate with copper tailpiece AND handrest looks best against the copper & mahogany

  • @ngiles1000
    @ngiles1000 Год назад

Ok here’s my two bob. I like the steel, but maybe because it’s a better design, though it dose look good against the brass. End of the day I would probably go brass on brass on brass. However the brass design plate looks somehow incomplete, maybe it need another trail of smaller holes between all your existing holes. The hand rest needs an increased angle with rolled sides. Can’t remember it I saw you make mushroom next stick supports Nationals have 4 two on the stick 2 side of the cone ring and support at tail end. Otherwise a great build 🙏

Also if I can add the boys in the know say the design of the cover plate will affect the sound the guitar puts out, thought I haven’t experimented in that respect myself but it makes sense. Say if it had no sound holes it would me muffled, So more or less should factor. With reso’s , there’s always another consideration

You didn't seem sure if that golden coloured pre-made coverplate was brass or plated mild steel. Does a magnet stick or not ? That would tell you RIGHT away !
Also, I'm not too keen on the drilled holed (personally, aesthetically) as they are, set in a straight line, progressively getting larger holes as they go outwards from the centre. However, Perhaps you might try each line of increasing-size holes set in a spiral/curve. THAT might make it look much fancier, but with no extra effort drilling (only deciding WHERE to put the holes) ?!! The holes set in a spiral shape will echo the spirals in the resonator cone !
Great series of videos though !

    Chickenfoot. Copper pull. Brass bridge

I think the copper goes well with the Mahogany while the steel doesn't fit in too great. So Brass + Copper I guess

Is it too crazy to do a wooden handle for the cover plate? Otherwise im a fan of the copper

That sounds like the hardest thing we could do... which means that's probably what we will do Lol! That's a good idea.

all the options have an appeal James, none look jarring, totally wrong! wood sounds interesting, but I think copper, or brass looks the best?
