For anyone having troubles getting the VM to recognize one of the new XPro triggers, I had to try a lot of different cables before I found one that worked. Ultimately this cheap one on Amazon did the trick.

Thanks for the video. What’s required to update these flash units is complete insanity.
Wow! Great video, but somebody needs to tell Godox that an awful lot of photographers use Macs. Thanks for sharing this.
Godox is INSANE. Ken Falk is a genius.
Ha! Far from a genius. Just a nerd with too much time on his hands. :D Thank you though.
So glad in 2019/10 all this complicated procedure is not required.
what do you mean? Is there any other way?
Can only speculate but I think he means that the new products support updates via MacOS natively but it’s only the AD400Pro, V1, and the X2T. So moving forward new product will be updatable via MacOS but everything prior will require a workaround like in my video.
I mean you can install a G1, G2 or G3 and then download the proper firmware, connect your pc to your device (flash, speedlight or trigger) via usb and run the software.
@@PauloParreira I havent found that is the case, I am only figuring that only g3 offers that mac and windows option. Would love to know if your response is true. would save me the headache.
Ve Le yes, it’s true, one of them it’s not possible to install on Mac. So I powered on an old pc.
it's insane that you have to do this to get this software running. It's been 4 years since you posted this clever work around and the company still hasns't figured it out. Crazy.
Thanks Ken. I managed to download VirtualBox-5.2.22-126460-OSX.dmg as I was having some issues with 6.0. The extra step you included about the VM Extension Pack was the key as my USB slots were greyed out. Updated AD200 and AD600Pro to the latest Firmware now, very much appreciated, kudos man.
Thank you for this tutorial! I would have NEVER figured this out without your step by step instructions!
Ken thank you so much for this video. This has helped me so much to update my godox ad200 on a mac....
Thanks for this great easy to follow tutorial. I would have gone utterly insane without it!
Great video. Thankyou very much. Helped me resolve an issue with compatibility between the Nikon Z6ii and the Godox V1 and 860ii as I only have a Mac and not PC. Very clear and informative.
This is an amazing step by step tutorial! Thank you!!
This is a fantastically clear tutorial - Thanks Ken!! Updated my Ad200's, TT350, V1 & 2 XPros in no time at all once VB was setup on my 2019 McBook Pro...
Holy…that was a marathon but I finally crossed the finish line. MS Developer now only offers Windows 10 and thus, several steps were slightly different in the last half. For one, it requires a password, which it turns out is "Passw0rd!". Tried three different USB cables all new, and finally (no rhyme or reason) got one to work. With a lot of persistence, this works (though ridiculous we had to endure such a feat). Thank you Ken!
Thank you SO much for this! I was losing my sanity trying to figure out how to upgrade firmware on my V860ii. This video was so incredibly helpful
Thank you. It took a few attempts to get the XT1 trigger recognized on the USB port. Took batteries out and switched cables. No go. Had a second XT1 trigger. That one was recognized immediately, and after that the other trigger showed up on the USB port as well. No rhyme or reason.
Not gonna lie, it's voodoo at times. Sometimes it's cables, sometimes it's whether your USB hub is powered or not. After enough retries I've gotten all my stuff to update.
Worked great on the X1T-C thanks
Thank you, Ken for enduring this process for the sake of mankind.
But WOW! What an absolute vulgar disregard for their customers on the part of Godox to make every one of their Mac customers endure this process just to save them the time/expense to create a DMG package. Let's add the all the download times to your 15 minute process, then multiply that by the thousands of Godox Mac customers and realized how much time Godox steals from the human race by supporting only Windows photographers. My experience has been that most photographers (Pros) use Mac. As a former Product Manager, I would be screaming at Godox Software Engineering.
I'll copy and paste my response to another user. Not making excuses but from the perspective of another former Product Manager, I get it. It sucks, but I get it.
Godox sources their firmware boards from another vendor in the thousands. You know how the Flashpoint G1/G2 app is just a rebadged Godox G1/G2 app? Well that Godox app is just a rebadged Atmel/whoever the hell they're sourcing their boards from updater. So until that vendor creates a Mac updater, Godox won't have one. If you do some Google searching you'll see that the majority of vendors deploying ATMEL firmware boards are systems that don't get updated frequently like surround sound receivers and toasters (ok maybe not toasters but you get my point). I have no doubt that Godox would love to offer a Mac-native way to update these but they probably signed onto a 1M or 1.5M parts agreement with ATMEL for these boards years ago because they got the job done.
Once again, just informed speculation. Signed, a former product manager.
@@Iam18grey So, THAT'S why I love my toast so much and prefer it over my microwave!
Excellent, sanity saving video - thank you very much!
Thanks Phil! Glad it was helpful.
Thanks for making this, but, I think I'm going to just buy a new X-Pro trigger and hope that it has current firmware, this is insanity.
I feel you. It's so ridiculous
Thanks so much! Can't tell you how much this saved my sanity
This was incredibly helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for the video, it really helped.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! It saved the day!
Thank you so much. Godex should have the Mac upgrade rather punishing the Mac user.
Great video. Nice step by step. Am I crazy to wonder why the hell FP / Goddox doesn't already support Mac and we have to go through all this just to stay current?
Want my (informed) speculation?

it won't let me add optical disk drive. not an option
Thank you very much, your tutorial is amazing!
Everything goes smoothly until I enter the Windows screen and I have to enter a password?! Anyone had these issues?! I need seirous help with this crap.
Years later here we are and I still can't upgrade my Godox V1 firmware. No usb cable will work :(
I did this yesterday. All went well until I tried connecting the Godox via usb…. The USB device name was not the name of the flash, I forgot what it was, but it was something generic. At first it would not mount on the virtual box, but finally it did.
My godox x1t isn't showing up in USB devices, even though I've already updated by xpro and V860II flash. Can anyone suggest why it's not showing up? Thanks
Thank you so much for your information when I go to devices to Usb I do not see ATMEL DUF GODOX
Greetings Minerva, things to check:
-It can be pretty particular/picky about the cable you're using and honestly there isn't much rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes just swapping cables will fix it.
-Make sure the device's power source has been removed before plugging it in via USB.
Ken Falk
Thank you for your help is very kind of you to return with an answer
WOAH!!!! THIS VIDEO IS THE ONE!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I've tried to connect my go dox TT885N multiple times -- can't connect within the VB. I've tried multiple cables, USB ports to avail. I have a newer version of VB 6.0. I can load and run the exe, then load the updated fw, but it won't connect. Batteries are out, cable is, still no connection. Any other suggestions that will help?
Fantastic - perfect. Thanks Ken
I've connected all my gear to the laptop but i don't see any of GODOX in usb window. The software says connections failed. What to do?
I cannot get windows to identify the usb even though having followed all the steps.
i got everything going until it was time to run the IE11-Win7.... now i getting an error "KERNEL DRIvER NOT INSTALLED(re=1908)... what do i do?
Hi Ken, thank you for this tutorial. I used it 2 years ago and have returned back to it again as I can't get Virtual Box to work on my new M1 Mac running Ventura, getting this error "The installer has detected an unsupported architecture. VirtualBox only runs on the amd64 architecture". I know that since this post Godox has released Mac OS firmware updates, but that doesn't work either.
Not 100% but you might need to go back and choose the Intel version instead of AMD version. The M1 Macs will emulate an Intel processor. If that doesn’t work you might need to wait for VirtualBox to release an M1/M2 optimized version. 😕
@@Iam18grey Thanks Ken!
im using a newer mac and c on not seem to get the usb to connect.
Thanks man. Sorted.
I am having trouble installing the driver for the AD600B...V2.6. The file opens with a .fri file that is not recognizable in the Windows EI 11 - WIN 7 when I drag and drop. Any suggestions? The other software worked fine in the .exe file.
Did you ever solve this issue?
@@j.dperez4886 I'm getting an .fri file as well, not an .exe file. Is Keka unzipping stuff weirdly? Can't seem to solve it.
It wont allow me to add the USB port, can anyone help? Says Invalid settings detected, when I click them .... System Acceleration Page & Display Screen Page errors
Thanks to you for doing this video and poor thinking by Godox requiring you to do this for us to use their product.
All this just to update some firmware! Shame on Godox. They need to write native Mac software. If I wanted to us a Wincrap machine, I would have bought one!
I'm getting an error in VirtualBox saying "Invalid settings detected" saying that VM has been assigned less than the 24mb of video memery. When I try to add more it is grayed out. This wont let me create an optical disk drive. Any suggestions?
SAME!
The conteents of microsoft link have changed and downloading of VM is no longer supported. Is there an alternative. Thanks
Same. tried searching for virtual machinesas well as ie11.😕
You can check the version of your current firmware before going through all this.
In my case on the TT685s it is version 2.1, the same that I just downloaded and unzipped.
Well, now I have the VirtualBox installed.
what if the file is dfg? meant for ios apple? I dont see the usb option for godox?
File shouldn’t be a DFG. There’s no VirtualBox installer for iOS, just macOS. DMG should be the only option.
Wow, I might just borrow my kid's computer or the work laptop maybe.
I have a really old iMac(mid 2010), with Mac OS X High Sierra, will this all work with that?
I know this was a year ago but I am still having problems connecting my TT685c. I read your recommendation on removing the batteries. When the USB is connected, should the switch be in the off or on position? Will the power light up or will it look like it is still turned off? Thanks again and really appreciate this video.
Ad600 isn’t showing up on usb. Tried a few cables still nothing. Power source is out too. Any suggestions. It’s the flashpoint 600 Manual. Thanks
I have the same problem with ad200, x1t, and tt685. tried 3 different cables
Same, I’ve tried 4 cables and none of the units are being recognized (x1t f, ad 200)
Trying to update my flashes and trigger but when I connect them via USB the computer doesn't recognize that they are connected. What might I be doing wrong? Did everything along with you up until that point.
Hi, Rustin! I've found it's usually one of these things:
-It can be pretty particular/picky about the cable you're using and honestly there isn't much rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes just swapping cables will fix it.
-Make sure the device's power source has been removed.
@@Iam18grey I just have two USB-C ports and use an adapter. maybe that's the problem?tried a few different cables and don't have power in the flash
I'm running into the same problem now with a transmitter. Tried removing the batteries: nope. Tried 4 different cables: the remote turns on, but no USB recognition on the virtual machine. :(
CL Kwa yeah I’ve tried different cables and nothing seems to work
@@Iam18grey YES, this is the answer!!! Follow these troubleshoot instructions and select STM USB if GODOX doesnt pop up.
I finally got the Virtual Box software running but I am unable to drag the firmware updates onto the Virtual Box desktop for some reason. Can anyone enlighten me where I might be going wrong, I'm so close to having completed all of the steps.....
Strange... I've installed VirtualBox already, and it's open, but when I double click on the Oracle extension pack, VirtualBox goes to the top of the screen but otherwise doesn't do anything.
Nvm I figured out another way: open VirtualBox preferences and manually add it under the extensions tab.
@@clkwa2025 Glad you got it figured out!
Hi, this is what i get when i lunch the virtual box installation :
(Unsupported hardware architecture detected! The installer has detected an unsupported architecture. VirtualBox only runs on the amd64 architecture.)
I have the M1 pro macbook.
Thanks for the video
VirtualBox isn't M1-ready :(
developer.microsoft.com no longer brings one to the options you described in this video. So, I'm stuck not being able to create a virtual Pc.
I'm struggling for 3 hours now in order to finish this stupid update and still I can't.. Godox need to seriously do something about this situation.. For me it's reason enough not to buy anything from this company ever again..
I am adding an optical drive to the win7 after installing virtualbox but it doesnt create a disk image and when I try to open it says "insert guests addition image" etc and doesnt let me, and it tells me that "IE11-Win7" has no optical drives ugh its so frustrating im stuck at this point
Hi Ken, Thank you for the video. I have been unsuccessful updating the Flashpoint Xplor 600PRO TTL. Tried two different Windows machines (Vista and 10) and also a Virtual Box install (Windows 7) on a 2013 Mac Pro. I wanted to know what your thoughts on the Flashpoint vs Godox. I know they are the same units just one is Adorama's house brand. A noticeable difference is the Flashpoint uses a USB-C port. Every video I've seen on RUclips has been the Godox being updated with the micro-USB. Do you know of anyone succeeding with the USB-C port? I have tried 3 different cables with the VM on the Mac. Yes, it shows up in Devices and it is checked. I have tried selecting USB 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 with each of the three different cables, no luck. I tried using the Flashpoint F1 installer and the Godox G1 installer each with the appropriate file. It just will not connect. Needless to say, I'm frustrated. The current firmware version the strobe came with is 1.1 so I do feel it is necessary to update the firmware. Thanks for your videos and support.
I have found the answer by calling Adorama. There is no firmware update for the GODOX AD600 PRO or the Flashpoint XPLOR 600 PRO. The firmware is for the earlier models of the 600 watt flashes.
Hey Ken, I dragged the file over to the virtual box and then double clicked on it. It brought me to internet explorer and told me I don't have the right program to open that file. I try to download winRAR and enter my email for free support but can't find the program...Ughhh This is frustrating
These instructions need to be written out rather than trying to follow on a video.
When a 16 minute video is needed about how to update a product, you know you have purchased the wrong product. Very disappointing from Godox, the video is 4 years old and they are still not able to connect to a macbook.
When I unzip the installers I'm getting .fri or .dfu files, not .exe files. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong... everything else is really clear (thank you Ken) but I'm stuck at this point.
Thank you! It worked! But holy moly. Don't ask me to do this again. hahaha
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for this. However, when I click on insert guest addition, I do not get the prompt window as shown in your video. I cannot drag and drop the files and I keep needing to activate my mouse between both systems. When I drag the file into Windows it doesn't recognize the action. I imported the IE11 - Win81 version.
I'm having the same problem. Did you ever figure this out?
I'm having the same problem. Does anyone know how to fix this please?
Ken, do you know if there is any option to restore a unit to its base firmware without having the original firmware file? I have two AD600 Pros and there was a firmware upgrade this week to V1.3. I updated one and it works fine. The other just throws an Error 9 which Godox say means "try again" basically. I have done this to no avail. I have reached out to them and await a reply, I've also posted on various forums. There really should be a button combination for factory reset but I don't know what it is or where to find it. Would appreciate any suggestions you may have, thanks!
Hey Phil! I’m not aware of any way to restore to a previous version without using the original firmware file.
Ken Falk I managed to sort it out thankfully. I redownloaded and applied the V1.3 file and both lights are now working as planned - phew!
Good to hear! It can be frustrating for sure and takes a little trial and error. Still love the system and wouldn’t give it up for anything else!
aw crap I closed this window accidentally but was composing a detailed update for 6.0.0 because several things were different, but I figured them out. Don't suppose you're planning a new video? :D
Oh hey, so there is! Don't see why I couldn't. Will install 6.0 right now and get a vibe for what's different. Keep an eye out for an updated video.
Ken Falk awesome. I am doing a Godox video tomorrow (my shows are live) and instead of taking people through this I will point them to your channel. You’d think Godox could do a Mac version… sheesh. And thanks!!
@@photojoseph For what it's worth, there's a completely simple and unremarkable reason they don't offer a Mac version: like most other electronics companies they don't design/build their own DFU boot loader devices. They source them in the hundreds of thousands from another vendor. In the case with most of their gear it's Atmel. Those vendors don't have Mac updaters, ergo Godox does not have them. You know how the Adorama updater is just a reskinned Godox updater? Well the Godox updater is just a reskinned Atmel updater. Until Atmel starts offering a MacOS updater, Godox won't be able to. Bummer but it is what it is and I imagine Godox has a multi-year millions of piece contract they need to fulfill with Atmel before they can start finding another boot loader and once they did it would only appear in new products so it simply isn't worth it for them to pursue at the moment.
@@Iam18grey Very interesting and good to know, thank you! So what do you think… will you get to do a 6.0.0 version soon? Either way I'll be referencing your channel on tomorrow's live show.
@@photojoseph Shouldn't take me too long. I haven't come across any big surprises so far. Probably within the week.
16 November 2019 -- This has been about as excruciating as the head and chest cold I'm just emmerging from. Virtual Box is now at version 6.0. All goes well until the Install Guest Additions step: an additions file cannot be found. I don't think it matters; perhaps it's in the main distro. However & ultimately, the problem I was having was in identifying the USB device from the list presented by the widget, bottom right. For G2 at this date, it has no Godox character string; it's an ST-something device. I had to reinstall the app -- memories of my Windows daze -- in order to find out its name. And oh! the joy of simply powering off Windows rather than waiting for the 7 updates to download and install! Thanks for this but, as someone earlier said, it's a totally arbitrarily complicated and convoluted procedure and Godox is going to have to fix it if its to be taken seriously as a player. Sooner or later someone is going to come along and eat their lunch by providing a bit of customer care.
I was having problem with my iMac probably will try this on my MacBook pro.
I am able to get the virtual box installed and run the godox firmware update software. I can select file and choose the .fri file but when i click on 'Connect' i am unable to connect to my device. AMTEL DUF GODOX does show when i click on the usb icon on the bottom menu of Virtual Box. I get Connect Failed when I click on Connect. Anyone else having this problem?
note, i ended up upgrading firmware on on old PC, but had to install device drivers for both my v860IIF speedlight as well as my xprof trigger.
Ken, back again, I need to run a firmware update (again), followed all the steps (again) but USB is not even in the dropdown menu to be able to activate - any ideas?
i had the same problem. try using a different usb hub on your computer (there is usually more than one). i found that when i did that it finally recognized the connection
I tried it on a PC subsequently, it connected and installed but still showed the error - tried 3 times! Currently on it’s way back for warranty repair or replacement 🙄
I actually only have two USB-C ports with an adapter. can't get them to connect@@derekdelahunt3761
This is so convoluted it is impossible to follow. Ridiculous that Godox only allows Windows users to download and install their firmware updates.
Thanks!!!!
Jesus! ….or just find a friend with a Windows computer. GODOX!
thanks but this makes me never to buy a Godox product again. They can't even have an installer on Mac for these flashes.
I mean if you want to write off an entire brand because of a 6 year old snapshot of how to update via Mac, go ahead but I’m willing to bet this video is no longer relevant.
All this for a godox firmware update?? Ridiculous.
