I love Clues because episodes like this and Brothers show that while Data is invaluable as an ally, he can be unnerving, uncanny and downright terrifying as an enemy.
I hated when that random writer added a throw away line that he had been in starfleet for 27 years before joining the enterprise. Dude has been with humans for 27 years and has never heard "early bird gets the worm"
Me too. Never noticed as a kid, but rewatching as an adult I’m like wow, Data is dangerous! Invaluable when he’s on your side and he has saved the day plenty of times but if something goes wrong, watch out
Given the fact that there's no indication that Troi's possession gave her enhanced strength, I choose to believe that she has the ability to manhandle Worf at any point and is just too polite to demonstrate it.
Worf is leading a class in a Klingon martial art called Mok'bara. It is really just tai chi done with more aggressive motions and clawed hands. Visual effects producer Dan Curry was a practitioner of tai chi and thought it would be fun to bring it into Klingon culture and show Worf training the crew. So yeah, Worf as security chief has taken it upon himself to teach his fellow officers some unarmed self-defense techniques. Pretty cool idea! It's also probably a pretty good exercise for recreational purposes on long journeys between star systems.
Makes you wonder just how strong a full Betazoid is, if a half-Betazoid like Troi can so easily toss Worf around like that. Picard better watch out the next time her mother's onboard and feeling frisky.
Seems to me like the whole episode could’ve been avoided if Data just said they were out for 24 hours, deleted the probe telemetry, and said he healed Worf’s wrist.
It's based on tai chi, and the forms you see would be recognizable to anyone at even a beginner level of tai chi, but it's done in a more aggressive way with clawed hands to make it into the Klingon martial art Mok'bara. Worf is teaching the class, either as a way of sharing his cultural heritage with his friends for recreational exercise, or I always liked to think it was because as security chief he figured it would be good for officers onboard to know some unarmed martial arts besides the usual silly-looking stage fighting techniques Starfleet usually uses.
With glee Alex puts his 'We have a mystery!' hat back on. I don't need to see any more beyond that point to know this will be an enjoyable watch and thus need to comment now.
So glad y’all appreciate the world building in Trek! It’s so rich and with a few exceptions, it’s coherent and respected. TNG is like watching a great band all grooving together.
Did you know that you can tell roughly where you are in the TNG series by the stardate? Always starts with a 4. The second digit tells you the season, the third digit between 0 and 9 tells you where in the season. This episode has a stardate that starts 445... 4, 4(season) 5 - halfway through season 4 🙂 Therefore the last moment of series 4 would be 449999!
A Class M (human similar life habitable) planet in a T Tauri type star system would be very unusual. T Tauri stars are very young and active. It would be worthy of investigation to find how a Class M planet would have already developed around such a star.
@@mjbull5156 Not just very young, _extremely_ young. Just a few million years old. They haven't even begun fusing hydrogen yet. There's no way a Class M planet could have formed naturally in that time, which suggests that it was either terraformed, or perhaps even placed there artificially. Definitely worthy of exploration.
Gordie and the beard thing becomes something of a meme. LaVar wanted to grow a beard, but the studio wouldn't let him. SO he started mentioning it in episodes....
I think you guys forgot that there was a Tasha Yar flashback in season 1. It showed her back on Tarkana IV (I think) in the tunnels with her cat escaping the rape gangs. Or is that considered more of a memory instead of a flashback? 🤔
That wasn’t a flashback it was an illusion caused by the situation they were in. Everyone was experiencing them. This was a flashback for the audience.
If the Enterprise was around the planet for more than a few days, Starfleet will begin to wonder where their flagship is. Eventually more ships would show up, and then we have a completely different episode.
17:50 -- "Yesterday's Enterprise" is similar, as the only person who has memories of it as an event is Guinan (and even then, her memories are likely dreamlike, not concrete, more so a sense of intuition than specific memories).
This is at least the second time they use the holodeck in the teaser to establish the theme of the episode's plot. I would not not necessarily put this in S-Tier, though it is a very good episode and a prime example of a Star Trek episode. There are just other episodes in this season which are better.
A great mystery episode that I think was wrapped up a bit sloppely. Picard really quickly suggested wiping everyone's minds. Still a really great episode, though.
Yea, the ending really doesn’t provide the payoff for all of the build-up. It’s not bad, just not great, feels like they went “shoot, we ran out of runtime, finish up, now!”
@@fakecubedI think Picard was aware that no matter what the (recent) law says, there are some who would overturn it if they thought Data was a threat. Law is one thing, the sentiment behind it is another...

Her physiology is probably well known enough that they should know how to erase her memory selectively. There’s a ton of different species on board, and they’d have to potentially use different techniques on them too. Beverly should know immediately if any of species on board wouldn’t be able to have their memories erased if she keeps up with the medical needs of the crew and passengers.
*The “Beards not growing” bit is a tad awkward, I’ll concede to that, but I always felt that it came from a place of (probably) the writers fearing backlash from some “CinemsSin type” of Nerd who would watch the episode and go “Well actually 🤓, if they were all awake for a day: How come the men with no beards not have at least a 5 O’clock shadow on their face? It never struck me as awkward to be honest. They always keep their faces very clean shaven, you would definitely notice a day of growth going from smooth to stubble.
Got the Joe Miller hat going on there Alex... The aliens would have just blown the Enterprise up if they came back a third time. I think that would be pretty bad doing it over and over again. But something like that can be down right down the road... nuff said.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but for me there's a major logical issue with this solution for the Paxan problem. As soon as the Enterprise meets another ship or starbase or any other who has an old-fashioned calendar, they should immediately realize that everyone else is two days ahead of them.🤔 Greetings from Germany, I love your Star Trek journey. Keep up the awesome work!
It's fairly common for there to be slight discrepancies in time across different ships due to relativistic effects from traveling at high impulse or through intense gravity fields. There are standard procedures to resynchronize the ship's chronometer whenever docking at a starbase. The two-day discrepancy is probably a bit higher than normal, but nothing unheard of. But in any case, the plan was that Data would explain the "unstable wormhole" induced the time discrepancy.
This is a fun, well-crafted mystery with some enjoyably unpredictable plot twists. But because it's a mystery, it doesn't have a lot of rewatch value for me. I rank it a B; definitely a banger the first time you watch it. This is the beginning of a string of about 6 episodes that I consider middle-of-the-road for the most part, so I'll be interested to see what you think.
Over the decades, fans have gotten more and more pissed about Troi somehow breaking Worf's wrist. They prevailing theory has been "possession makes her stronger". But I've always wondered, why? Maybe that's not the case. Maybe, just maybe, Batazoids are physically stronger than humans, possibly on the level of Klingons. There's nothing stated in canon that Betazoids are physically equal to humans. And you can be genetically superior in strength to those around you, but still not be "the physical one", for example, I work with kids, and I easily could lift the majority of them and throw them out the window if I wanted, but I don't even like swatting a fly if I can avoid it. With Worf's statement suggesting there are a few others on the ship that could break his wrist, he's talking about strength to do it, not that they'd be able to without getting the drop on him, as such, I'm sure he'd have included Troi based off of genetics alone.
One of my favourite episodes. Gives me goosebumps the level of duty and decency on Data’s part even if it could lead to great personal cost. The welfare of the ship and crew comes first. I like that we’re kept guessing for most of the ep. Definitely an S tier for me, but both Guinan’s and O’Brien’s scenes seem like cameos and not integral.
I wonder if there is an actual cellular "clock" in our bodies which could be read with the technical means currently available to us. If it were convenient and inexpensive to create "timestamps" we'd have a new tool for solving mysteries...or at least for giving someone plausible deniability.
Whoopi Goldberg wanted to be on the show (it was she who approached them), but her appearances were usually pretty constrained because of her schedule. Except for a few times, they had to write around this, limiting her to only a scene or two, or when it was several scenes, she would always be on the same set so they could shoot it the same day, etc.
I always enjoyed this episode but one thing always bothered me was that I thought it would be obvious they lost time when they ran into other starships as their star dates would be out of sync? Did I miss an explanation for that?
I'm not sure if it's the actual origin but I mainly associate it with video games, especially Japanese titles like Metal Gear Solid as the ultra top-tier difficulty/achievement ranking.
This was a good episode (not an S), but I find it weird that they find out about the time lapse by looking at the plants, you would've thought they would notice the star trek computer is not in-sync with the federations', I mean I am assuming all their systems (ship and the federation) are connected in some way like a big network.
I've always enjoyed this episode, but the ending always confused me. At first, I thought it was just because I was doing other things while watching it, so I made a concerted effort to pay close attention to it, and now I'm convinced it doesn't work. They say they'll get rid of the clues, but most of their clues were out of their control. Sure, they can fix Crusher's plants, but Worf's arm was still broken. Maybe that won't be discovered for a while, but their clocks are now two days off. Again, they might not notice that for a while, but there was no way they could prevent Troi's mirror freak out or something similar. I don't know. I enjoy the episode, but I've never bought their resolution.
Thus the "wormhole." Both in theory and in certain instances on Star Trek, wormholes don't necessarily just connect different points in space, but also time. Any time discrepancy would be assumed to be the result of the wormhole in the absence of any contradictory evidence.
Agreed, I love this ep just as much after seeing it again (and after multiple viewings). Definitely an S. I think the ep works best with them just having one more chance to get things right. Otherwise, the jeopardy gets watered down when they have endless chances to fix things. And they're smart enough to eliminate all the clues from the first time around.
Fun Plot Hole: this ship's chronometer will now be off by 2 days, which will be discovered when they're to be someplace by a certain date/time and arrived 2 days late.
I never liked this episode; the plot is just so implausible - as a thought experiment episode, it's an interesting concept, but the execution didn't work for me. Still fun watching you guys enjoy it.
@@targetaudience I'll be curious to your reaction, after the movie, to see if you think that release order was good. Many felt that release timing was terrible and only capitalized on the holiday release schedule and ignored unspoken aspects.
I like this episode, but wouldn't they easily figure out they miss a day when somebody calls a relative for their birthday a day late or something? the plot hole is a bit to big for me to suspend my disbelief
It was (supposedly) caused by a wormhole, and they distort space and time. It’s perfectly logical that a starship would experience bizarre temporal effects after such a close encounter with one. Data could have explained it that way, if the writers knew enough about relativity.
Nah, if they thought they went through a wormhole, being off time-wise in the outside world wouldn't have been unexpected for the most part. It's definitely not a plot hole, imo.
Any forgettable episode is a B at best. I totally forgot this episode only remembering the twist about Data. That's why I'll give a B and not lower. Without a rewatch I'd never remember this episode.

I found it very considerate of the Paxans to put on Troi's uniform, do her hair, and her makeup when they possess her the second time
Well, they are not monsters!
Data's ability to (on a Dime!) Switch and make you worried or even terrified of him. Is crazy amazing.
Given the fact that there's no indication that Troi's possession gave her enhanced strength, I choose to believe that she has the ability to manhandle Worf at any point and is just too polite to demonstrate it.
Worf did say there were a few on the ship that could hurt him.
Well she clearly has been taking Worf’s “Klingon-fu” classes.
Data did say they could manipulate matter.

yup, data is the terminator and an episode is only about 40 minutes long so they sometimes have to cram it in a bit. No season long arcs.
Headcanon for the probe: going into the next iteration, they use deepfakes rather than stock photos (or analogous techno babble)

That's explained by the wormhole.
I never liked this episode; the plot is just so implausible - as a thought experiment episode, it's an interesting concept, but the execution didn't work for me. Still fun watching you guys enjoy it.
I hate these sorts of stories. And those aliens.
10:26 wat? wtf?
Josh and Alex, I know you are watching in release order, but watch Star Trek 6 BEFORE Season 5.
It will be after S5E9
@@targetaudience I'll be curious to your reaction, after the movie, to see if you think that release order was good. Many felt that release timing was terrible and only capitalized on the holiday release schedule and ignored unspoken aspects.
They could have utilized Guyan more in the story. She has an inate ability to know when something is wrong. And could have clued Picard into it.
Ah, I spoke too soon. You guys brought up the Guynan point that I did 😊
I think her sense is more that something is messing with reality, rather than alien hi-jinks
Worf getting worfed as hard as the students in those fraud martial arts videos. Or maybe Steven Seagal
And getting worfed by Troi('s body).
1st. Hi guys 🙂
Hey there!
