The whole point of the Canon 6D Mark II is the entry into using a full frame sensor. This has a number of advantages. It usually includes improved dynamic range (not so much in this case - read on), better low light ability and least obviously - the potential to use better glass, particularly at the wide end. High end lenses like the Canon 16-35mm L are perfect for landscape photography and on a full frame camera you get the full 16mm wide end coverage. Putting this lens on a cropped sensor camera effectively increases the 16mm to a more narrow 25mm which can be limiting in some situations.
Build quality of the camera is the usual Canon quality. It is a plastic build but it feels solid and secure and the weight also benefits from this. It has a flip out screen, which is missing from the higher end cameras for the sake of durability, but I find them particularly useful. When the camera is low down near a stream, or close to the ground, having the screen point up towards you is a real back saver. The flip screen means you can also use the Canon 6D Mark II for vlogging. Not a cheap vlogging option, but it is possible.
Next is the image quality. There are not many cameras out there today that provide poor image quality. This camera is no different. Image quality is superb for stills and you can quite happily use the 26MP sensor to create massive prints. Sadly though dynamic range was not as good as I would have hoped, especially at low ISO. This might put off some landscape photographers who might be looking at rivals from Sony and cameras like the Nikon D750. Personally when it comes to stills I am not concerned too much about dynamic range. Using bracketing can easily capture all the dynamic range in a landscape scene.
The dynamic range of the camera improves dramatically as ISO increases. Therefore, like many full frame cameras, The Canon 6D Mark 2 is excellent in low light. Any noise that does appear has a film grain type feel rather than the harsh noise often associated with crop sensor cameras. This means the camera lends itself to doing portraits as well as landscapes. Depending on the lens you attach to the camera it is capable of capturing stunning portraits. However I would be reluctant to use it at a wedding or for any other professional portrait work. The focus system covers a smaller area of the frame than higher end cameras like the Canon 5D Mark IV which can be limiting when you have to focus and re-frame more often that you would like. Having said that, for most, that will not be a problem. The focus system is still very accurate and fast. It also has the dual pixel autofocus system for video. This Canon system is really second to none for video focus and it very very rarely misses including when using face detection.
Video quality is reasonable but again the dynamic range can be limiting. When I was out in the mountains getting detail across the frame was not easy and I was often left with blown out skies. This could probably be improved by using a flatter picture setting rather than sticking with the built in presets like I did. There is also no 4K option and the 1080p quality is softer than the Canon 5D Mark IV and more in line with the cropped sensor Canon cameras. However the ability to take 1080p at 60fps does provide the option of producing some slo motion footage.
Overall I had a superb time using this camera. If you were to buy it, you would be very happy. Just be aware it is not a professional level camera. We should not be expecting it to be though given the price point of £$1600. Indeed, the camera only comes equipped with one SD card port. To remove the slight limitations mentioned above you are looking at upgrading to the pro level Canon 5D Mark IV which is more than double the price. The Canon 6D is an all round performer suitable for all different genres of photography and will perform them all to a good standard. In many respects the upgrade to full frame is something many photographers aspire to and this camera allows you to do it much sooner with only very slight downsides. It is a shame the dynamic range is not better at low ISO but that is being hypercritical. An all rounder at a great price point for a full frame camera.
I upgraded from a Rebel to the 6DMII and I love it. I already had some good lenses. I host and acoustic music listening room so the low light capabilities are great. I am just starting to get into landscape photography and I am loving the 6DMII. Because it is so much better then the crop sensor Rebel that I had I can't find any faults with it. And I can also shoot video which is just an added bonus. I am sure I will use it for many years and if I ever get proficient with the landscape stuff I might upgrade to the 5DM4 but that is a really huge jump in cost for me. Oh and I got th ecamera used with only 700 shutter actuations so I think I got a really great deal.
Great review but have to disagree when you say it's not a professional camera, professional doesn't mean how much it costs, people use go pros in a professional capacity so I think a full frame camera is more than capable of being a professional tool, regardless of it's cost.
Plus he said it was plastic when it isn't! People tend to underestimate what costs less, mostly psychological assumptions!
It's funny because this camera costs 7 minimum wages in my country, so only rich photographers get to use full frame. When someone says a camera like this is not professional we can see the gap in economies.
peter totally agree. “Pro” peeps seems to drop “professional” a lot. Professional is what is acceptable by clients. If client is happy any tool would be a pro tool. Professional doesnt equal camera gear cost.
I don't understand, and never will, all the negative review about this camera... I own it, i pay 1200€ for it and i absolutely love it. It's perfect? No, of course. But for what my needs are(85% landscape, 15% portrait), this is a perfect camera.

I used it professionally. Mind you. The image quality is superb especially when mounted with a really quality glass like sigma art. Video? Sure , the best camera is the one you have. Plus do post editing can basically fix that for you. I think whats happening is these reviewers have multiple cameras to compare it to. Or seemingly bias to what currently have that isnt a 6d. Compose your photos well and a nice glass, this camera performs as well as those “pro” camera.
Thanks for sharing your position feedback on this camera. I need to buy a replacement for my very old Canon 5D and will probably buy the Canon 6D mark ii now because I have not found any other Canon camera at this price range that seems to be better than the 6d mark ii and I have a bunch of EF mount lenses that I would like to continue to use. I checked Canon EOS RP but it is no better, what is worse is the sensor remains exposed. I would just like to ask you if you have really experienced any unacceptable dynamic range issue with this camera (6d mark ii) while taking landscape photos. I mostly take landscape and travel photos. Thank you!
It's mostly Canon users that are upset about this camera release. Because it's not really a video beast, and it seems to have taken steps back in terms of photography even compared to the model it's supposed to replace. So it's a little upsetting to have a manufacturer cash in on people's involvement with the EF mount. (watch?v=2sP5S_cSk7g)
Hi Adam, really enjoy the videos and thank you for taking the time to review the 6D MkII, its needed someone like yourself to do it for a while. As you probably know this camera got a rough time at release due to some DR lab tests and the usual internet 'reviewers' regurgitating opinions without using the camera in the real world. I upgraded my 5DMk II just before Christmas, spent a long time deciding between the 6D MkII and the 5D MkIV but took the plunge on the 6D Mk II. Really happy with it, the size, weight, weather-sealing and features like the 'tilty/flippy' screen make it great for outdoor photography and the money saved was spent on new glass. I shoot mainly landscapes and honestly I've not found the DR to be limiting except in the extremes when I would normally bracket a shot. Under normal conditions I find I can always get a single image to how I saw it before anything gets ugly in the shadows, I tend to avoid shooting in very harsh light and not a fan of HDR look images. It would be really good to see a side by side DR comparison with the 5D MkIV when out taking landscape images, like same shot/lens/settings, see if it's possible to get the image to where you can with the 5D MkIV as I think a lot of the negative reviews this camera got on DR is a result of people pushing images beyond what would look normal or just not exposing correctly in the first place. Great review Adam. I've had the 6D2 since it was released last summer and love it. Just like any other tool one needs to learn it and know it's capabilities and limitations. I have had to bracket with it in certain situations to pull the best dynamic range out of some extremely dynamic landscapes etc but the final results are always beautiful and "keepers" in my opinion.
I also have had the 80D since its release date too and these cameras are VERY similar and they actually pair up nicely, I love both cameras and do not regret buying either one of them.....
That's great to hear. If I owned the 6D I would definitely be happy with it. Even with a 5D Mark IV I still bracket on many occasions.

Well done on another great review. I've been looking at this camera as an upgrade to my 70D for city and landscapes. Its the flip out screen that does it for me since I'm down low a lot of the time.
Despite many people out there saying that the 80D is a better option (in terms of picture quality), I think I am going to save that extra 300 bucks to buy the 6DMii. Only because it is a full-frame, and I want to see where this hobby takes me. Plus, the glass for the full-frames are much more abundant than the ones designed for crop-sensors.
Great comment and I agree. I upgraded from the 80D to this camera to take advantage of the lenses in my kit and make use of the full-frame capabilities of the camera. I was very happy with the 80D, wonderful camera, but when I put a 70-200mm on the 6DM2 I was blown away, as with a number of other high end lenses I had, they made the difference to this camera. So if you're comparing body to body there's not much difference but of course we need glass to take photos and that's where you get the benefit of the 6DM2 in my opinion. :)
I have an 80d and 6d II and personally think the 6d II produces the best pic quality by a long chalk. Oh, and I have no problem with the dynamic range of the 6d II. I believe a lot of the videos I see on RUclips about this camera are a case of ‘the king is in his altogether’. The comments about the focus points baffle me every time. If you use back button focus, you don’t need to constantly move the focus point around the 45 points. Once focused on the subject you have control over the whole view area.
I may be late to the game, but the 6DII has settings that can set the exposure for the first shot and use it through all subsequent shots in your stack. This should clear up the flickering issue seen in the video.
Indeed, it has timelaps feature like most cameras nowdays.
@5:50 A good little trick to prevent flicker in timelapses caused by stopping down the aperture is to first select what aperture you want, then whilst holding down the DoF preview button, unlock the lens and rotate it ever so slightly so that it's no longer detected by the camera. This will lock the aperture blades in place for the duration of the timelapse.
I hope you can make more reviews once in a while about camera’s performance and color production, as it really helps to choose which camera is best for landscape or any other kind of photography!

Adam I had the 6D Mk1 and was very pleased with it as an intro to full frame, when the Mk2 came along I looked at it as my next camera but went with the 5D Mk4. As you said there are a number of plus features in the 6D Mk2 like the articulated screen however the auto focus points and a few other things made me decide on the 5D Mk4.
6D Mk2 if anyone asks me for a good full frame to start with I would say absolutely its very good for its price
Yeah couldn't agree more. The Canon 5D Mark IV is the best camera I've ever used. No doubt. The Canon 6d ii is great though at that price point.

Great video Adam, I have this camera and I’m heavily invested in Canon lenses this is is my first Full Frame and I was stunned with the picture quality the first time I used it inside but mostly outside coming from an apsc sized camera like the 7D markII, 70D and 750D this is my main gear for Landscape photography now, again thanks for this great review bearing in mind some shortfalls this camera should not hold anybody back!!! you know, I have the 6d mark ii and I find it very nice... let's make some history 😂😂😂 I am 44 years old I studied photography when I was 20 in those times I have a DSLR "Zenith" may be somebody remember this kind of cameras had only one "manual" point of focus, so we had to learn to focus quick and VERY good in all kind of conditions... was a challenge... so for me personally is not an issue if the camera have 1 o 5000 points because I always use one in the centre .... I know may be is unpractical but is how I learned to focus and works for me...
The dynamic range... This is another story... but I have the 400d, 700d and now 6d m ll whit very nice pieces of glass so, I am very happy .

Hi! You know if I connect my 6DII to an external monitor, I can see my image in both screens? The external and the 6D II for tracking or I still use the touch focus at the same time?
Been looking at one of these for a while now, what would you recommend, I'm mainly in to macro, with landscape 2nd and astrophotography a close 3rd in subject interests, maybe a bit of wildlife and birds etc. The 6d2 looks like a really good camera and full frame which I think would be great for low light.
I don't like zooms, would only be sticking to primes, getting the 100mmL macro, what other primes would you reccomend for these particular photographic subjects (landscape, birding and astro, preferably with internal focusing and no front element extension?)
What would be your recommendation for Maximum usable ISO in landscape photography? With usable I meant the quality of the picture is not compromised by the noise

1st video of yours I've watched, told me just what I needed to know thank you, defiantly the 5d for me next, I'm loving my 7d Mk11 so locked into some 'C' type lenses but that's OK.
Main reason being I'm out and about in all weathers & conditions so the stronger 5's body should take the knocks a bit more

I really enjoyed video and what you say about camera. Would you recommend this camera to me if i wanted it for Astrophotography like milky way shots constellations and stars plus the moon near Venus in evening sky. I've got the Canon 700d and it's been great for astrophotography and now I want upgrade to full frame. If not.what would you suggest I'd get?

Hi Adam, thanks for that, very informative review covering all the real points that photographers want to know. I shoot with a Canon 760D and also find that the focus points are a little narrowly placed at times (even though mine's a crop sensor!)

I bought the 6Dmk2 and am, generally, very satisfied with the results.
One thing is really confusing me though. I started off with the histogram set to "Brightness". After I had tried changing it to RGB, I expected to see, either, (a) 3 seperate histograms, or (b) a means of toggling between Red, Green & Blue. But, the histogam I get is Black & White looking no different to the Brightness histogam.
I'm stuck; if you can put me right where I've gone wrong I'll be really grateful.

I think for some that are looking to go full frame, I would suggest taking a step back and consider just a far better lens first. An 'L' lens can still be used on a crop sensor dslr and it improves the overall image quite a bit. £300-£400 for some secon hand L glass is much better than £1800 on just the dslr body.
Really good review, Adam, always like real world reviews as they offer a different perspective. I think though the 5D Mark IV offers more over it though and I dont like the idea of the focus points clustered in the middle of the frame. But despite that it looks like a pretty good piece of kit.

Great review. Sadly as I already own the original 6D I don't see any reason to upgrade. I have noticed I want more DR from my 6D and I also want 4K video. This 6DII sadly offers neither.
First...I love the beautiful scenery! Where is this? Second, this was an honest review touching on the strengths and weaknesses of this camera. I want to dip my toes into full frame and this may be what I'm looking for. I currently shoot an 80D and use a 35mmF2 and an 85mmF1.8 Also have some L glass but not f2.8. I wish i could afford a 5dMk4 but I think the 6dMk2 might be what I'm looking for. Great video and thanks again for your time.

Hey there Adam, I currently at the moment am using a Canon 60D and have been since 2011. I currently own 1 EF lens and 4 EF-S lenses. I originally planned to go with the 80D, although I have been interested in jumping up to a full frame sensor. I do not do photography professionally, just as a hobby. I do travel a lot and do mostly landscapes and a little bit of wildlife photography. I also take portraits photos of my child from time to time. I have contemplated going with the 6D Mkii with the 16-35 mm f4 USM lens instead of the 80D. I rarely use the video functionalities of any DSLR camera. Do you think it would be better to purchase another crop sensor DLSR like the 80D or go with the full frame 6D Mkii?

Ist a great camera - absolutely underrated
Nice review, I bought the 6DMII as an “upgrade” to my 5DMIII. I couldn’t afford the 5DMIV yet, so I opted for the 6DM2. I shoot portraits and I absolutely love it. The files look as good or better than my 5DMIII and it’s lightweight and fast. The only thing I miss is the focus joystick. Focus point group doesn’t bother me, almost identical to D750, and way better than OG 6D as they are all cross type sensors. My first camera was film. One focus point! Lol. Focus and recompose is easy once the habit is formed. I also shoot Fuji, which I love. The 6DMII fits my needs perfectly and I’m quite impressed. The colors coming out of the camera in good light are astonishingly accurate; with skin tones that supersede my old 5D’s. And as a portrait photographer, that’s key to me.
Hi Donavan, I love the colours and detail in the files this camera produces. I mainly shoot landscape so most of the time my camera is in manual focus but on the occasions I use AF for portraits find the spread more than adequate as like yourself focus and recompose is baked into me now. I'm interested in a Fuji to use along side this, just if I want to travel light, which model are you shooting and how have you found the images compare to the 6D MkII?

Hi, thanks for your videos, I've subscribed to your channel. Very useful this video because I'm near to make the step from APSC to FF. Now I'm owner of a EOS 70D great camera but I need more for landscape photography, so I believe the 6D mk2 with the EF 24-70mm f4 L will be a good approach, no too expensive. I've read about the non so good dynamic range at low Iso, but always a step further form the 70D. Another dream are pro filter like PolarPro Summit 😁.
Hi, I currently have a Cannon 700d and am looking to upgrade to a full sensor Cannon. Don't have the budget for a 5D mk4 and am looking for a camera to do mostly landscapes with. Is the 6D M2 a good option?
Count Miffed yep I’ve got one and I love it! It seems to be one of those cameras where the critics like to pick at it but everyone who actually owns one loves it. It will be a big jump up from a 700d, particularly if you get some good glass for it. I have the 16-35 f4, 24-70 f4 and 70-200 f4 and they’re all great - if I had to choose just one it’d be the 24-70, which you should be able to get in a kit with the camera.
Which is best for product photography in this range?
Very good content! Liked it. I’ll probably ho ahead and buy it now (Jan, 21) because I won’t get a better full frame camera at this price range despite the complaints about dynamic range. One feedback to your content - you kept on comparing this camera with the Canon 5D mark 4 but that’s not fair because the price ranges are so different.
I have the 80D. I am wanting to upgrade to full frame to get full use of higher quality landscape lenses by not having to be concerned with crop factor. The 6dmrk2 has better low light capabilities and full frame, but im not so sure that it is a true upgrade from the 80D. I'd say thd 6dmrk2 is a full frame upgrade from the 800D/t7i. I think that 5Dmrk4 would be the logical ff upgrade from 80D. Your opinion, please. Id rather not advance in steps, buying 6dmrk2, then buying something better, later.

Overall it’s getting much better reviews now that it did originally when everyone was shouting "What about 4K?". I don’t do videos so that goes right over my head. It seems to be getting a lot of rave reviews as a vlogging camera and it certainly seems a good first full frame. I’m still using my 5DII for landscapes so I can’t complain about all the focus points being in the middle, but I wouldn’t like them to be there for my studio still life shots where I use my 5DIII. I can't complain about a single card slot because of the 5DII, although I’m glad I took my 7DII on honeymoon, as my only digital camera, and I used both slots as it’s the only time a card has failed on me. It certainly hasn’t been the massive flop everyone predicted when it first came out. Great review Adam, very honest and objective.
Exposure Bracketing is a useful feature & skill
Firstly, amazing review. So, the 6d mark 2 is now at $1300. good deal? Or should I invest in a Sony A7 ii the older one. I basically do lots of street and landscape photography. Please do reply. Thank you!
I think that a Drag to select focus point feature would beat both of them in terms of handling but as I've looked after each camera (to me) focusing is much easier on the canon what's coming handy for street stuffs. Also the lens selection on e-mount has much worse price/value ratio so in the end of gear purchaseing a Sony a7ii would: be older/higher priced(the whole gear)/less weather sealed/have less capable battery/ worse high iso performance/worse or overpriced lens gear. I mean each camera has its upside but roughly theese are the main reasons why I considered the 6d ii as my next investment. I hope I could help;)

For landscaping I would recommend this. There's some mirrorless options I'm going to be looking into soon that are lighter in weight.
If you have invested into Canon or you want Canon and you think whether buy 5dm3 or this, Fro Knows Photo has great comparison. If you haven't invested into some brand, check Fujifilm X-T2 (or X-H1, if you are into video).

I've not heard of anyone who made the leap to full frame and regretted it.

I think that's a smart way of thinking. I genuinely think the Canon 5D Mark IV is one of the best cameras of all time. It does virtually everything to a high standard apart from its size. I am hugely attracted by the the lighter form factor of the likes of the Fuji's.
First Man Photography I am to attracted to Fuji but I want a full frame sensor for maximum dynamic range and image quality, and I just think maybe the song offers that with a lighter smaller feel? I would love a 5d, not sure the Mrs would tho 😂

Thanks for this beautiful video, there is some oversharpening, looking different depending on what the camera is, and some overexposure, but this sometimes looks very beautiful, but in other cases is a problem. Overexposure is okay in Raw because it's recoverable, and DR goes both ways to don't forget to center it to get the most. However in video (or jpeg), you have to underexpose slightly in order to have better shots. From the 6D I recover less shadows but more highlights, so I think DR is the same, the distribution of DR is different. The 6D2 is especially good because of the articulated screen, and so I can shoot with 2 lenses now, without switching, because 2 bodies. 6D + 6D2 I'm happy with (in 2020)

I have it, and I wish I'd have waited for the 6D Mark iii. I can recover shadows better on my 70D than on the 6D Mark ii. I like the ergonomics of the body (as you said, it's a FF in a APS-c body). I don't have confidence in it, and that's not good.
Jay Downey if the sensor was better, then sales of the 5Dmkiv would have been lower so that Is why Canon only increased the megapixels. This camera was aimed at bloggers and people upgrading from basic aps-c crop sensor rebel cameras.
I guess. I ended up returning mine and getting the 5D Mark IV...
I have an 80D but I'm not pleased with lens choices in the Canon world for crop sensor cameras, and I don't want to spend a fortune on 5D Mark IV, as beautiful as it is. It's disappointing for me to hear this news about the poor dynamic range.
Thanks for the great review. I'm considering upgrading to the 6d mark ii over the 5d mark iv purely due to financial reasons, the 6d is half the price. I only wish I could afford the 5d, but with the savings I could also get a new lens. Which wide lens do you prefer or use more, 16 - 35mm f4 or 17 - 40mm f4?

It's pretty much an 80d with a full frame sensor so yes it's better.
It's great for video. The dynamic range is not as good as it could be though and the video image is similar to that of the cropped sensor cameras rather than the sharper 5d4 image.
If I may chip in, I'd say the video is worse than a cropped sensor because of the compression used. It only has IPB compression which looks soft and not very detailed, while the original 6D has the less compressed All-I as well as the IPB mode. My cropped sensor 70D also both, and when I compare IPB-files shot with my 6D mark i to the files shot with ALL-I on my 70D (same lens, 24-70 L F/4 IS) the general image quality of the cropped sensor ALL-I is noticably better. Although I havent tried the IPB on the 6D mark ii myself since I don't own one, the results I have seen on RUclips looks about the same. And of course, the ALL-I on my 6D looks better than ALL-I on the 70D. But since the original 6D does not have autofocus for video (!!) I use the 70D if I'm in front of the camera :)

Get a used 1200d off eBay with a 24mm lens, a 50mm lens and if you have money left over (if you buy second hand you probably will) the 70-300mm lens. That's exactly the kit I have now and it's a greater starter DSLR. I've just ordered the 6d Mark II as it was time for an upgrade but I've used the 1200d for a few years, it's done well.

flickering happens because of aperture opening n has nothing to do with AF system of a body ...
u can avoid it by twisting the lens like ur dismounting it just very slightly ...
2nd option is to use LRTimelapse software to evenout every flicker ...
I didn't say it was anything to do with the AF system. Its about the aperture and shutter curtain doing the same thing during every frame. I could never recommend to anyone detaching the lens in any fashion although I'm sure youre right once you break the electric contacts and lock the aperture in place.
I remember reading somewhere that some people even resort to old manual-only aperture lenses. It's so interesting that you've found one camera more consistent than another!
Please try out LRTimelapse Adam ! It`s free for editing 400 shots and it`s the best tool for deflickering. Otherwise you have to shoot with full opened aperture to avoid flickering.
How far can you zoom..?
The zoom is determined by the lens you put on it . Bigger the number the bigger the zoom.

Why wouldn't use this as a video camera? It has dual pixel AF, , touch screen, tity screen, 1080@60p while 5d mk IV does not have tilty screen, it does not have 1080@60p. Granted, it has 4k but how many people actually record videosa in 4k? How many people do actually monitors or tv that are 4k? Most people don't even have computers powerful enopugh to handle 4k video....
About the af points being in the center of all, I pick only the center focus point and never switch to other ones. If you like to shoot sports you're better off with 7D. For weddings I always use central focus point andf recompose. Or you can use live view, dual pixel AF is so amazing for even photography.

At ISO 100 the EOS 6D MK ii is only as good as Nikon's $6500 flagship D5 costing 3 times as much.
I can only wonder where you got that title from, not like froknowsphoto or anything... Still a great video :P
