Amy Lee has been quoted saying the song is about losing the comfort of sorrow. Lithium is a mood stabilizer that would take away the sorrow that the writer holds inside and she is not ready to let go of it. She has lived with sorrow so long that losing it now would be like losing a part of herself. That is what the whole refrain is about: "Lithium, Don't want to lock myself up inside, Lithium, Don't want to forget what it feels without, Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow." Lee's lyrics are often metaphorical and the words consist of double meanings. It's about her inner feelings toward herself.
Lithium is an element of the periodic table. Also a lubricant. Useful stuff. Sounds strange but you can write with chalk, use it as a dry lubricant or used with bismuth and dyed pink, you use it for upset stomachs.
I think the song talking about people who looking for happiness but in a negative way, even Amy Lee's makeup and the pale face in the video represent a consumed and weak person who took a lot of drugs
100%. I personally criticize Evanescence for having incredibly narrow themes in what all their songs are about but I can't deny that Amy Lee is just an incredible vocal talent.
@@Weaver_Games My Favorite Evanescence track is Tourniquet. Heavy and the Lyrics are a conversation starter. Written by the Drummer so a little different stylistically. But really my Favorite
@@Weaver_Games By far my Favorite song from Evanescence is Tourniquet. Written by the Drummer in a previous band so it’s a little different from other songs by them but with Amy’s strong vocals and Ben Moody on Guitar , it’s a really great song on the Fallen album which was excellently Produced
In this song lithium is a metaphor for happiness and shows her fear of embracing it and loosing creativity cause she always associated darker emotions with her composing skills and she feared is she was happy she wouldn’t be able to compose more songs…
One of my faves from them. I love Evanescence. Amy Lee's voice is pure, angelic, unique. Lithium refers to how this medicine made you feel when you take it. It's for bipolar disorders and as an antidepressant.
Lithium is one of the most widely used and studied medications for treating bipolar disorder. Lithium helps reduce the severity and frequency of mania. It may also help relieve or prevent bipolar depression.
You can never go wrong with Evanescence & Amy Lee. The song was inspired by the effects of the drug Lithium and how it can relate to sorrow and happiness in real life. Something like that, if I remember right this song was written by Amy Lee in her teens. Beautiful, I would definitely recommend you check out 'Everybody's Fool' & 'Call Me When Your Sober'
Amy is the ultimate goddess of rock music. The beautiful sweet & powerful quality of her voice, together with the hard rock music of her band make both a perfect match. Amy could sing a shopping list and it would sound just as amazing. She's just incredible.
I love Lex's "enchanting eyes"....hahahaha... Amy Lee's voice is amazing. Glad to see you continue reacting to her and Evanescence. Would love to see you do more Unleash the Archers as well!
Lithium is the third element. It's a metal. It's used in batteries. It's used as anti-psychotic in medicine. It's used as a medicine to reduce damage from exposure to nuclear radiation. Pure lithium reacts immediately to oxygen in the air so you wouldn't find it lying around, it can be in a pure state underground but when it exposed to the air it changes, I don't remember the change specifically it's been decades since chemistry class.
I love Amy Lee her voice the words it grabs you with the first note it grabs you by the heart and the emotions that at times you can't help but cry listening . I just can't explain what this song makes you feel it's just an incredible song.
Lithium is a type of medicine known as a mood stabiliser. It's used to treat mood disorders such as: mania (feeling highly excited, overactive or distracted) hypo-mania (similar to mania, but less severe) regular periods of depression, where treatment with other medicines has not worked bipolar disorder, where your mood changes between feeling very high (mania) and very low (depression) Lithium can also help reduce aggressive or self-harming behaviour. It comes as regular tablets or slow-release tablets (lithium carbonate). It also comes as a liquid that you swallow (lithium citrate).
@@christianhansen3292 Chris Handsome... That zombie state is preferable to the alternative. Trust me. Various lithium salts, most commonly simple lithium carbonate, have been used as mood stabilizers since as far back as the 1870s. Its effects stop you from going into extremes of emotions. You become a bit numb to everything, which isn't exactly what you want to achieve, but in many cases of disorders, such as major depression(the one with suicidal tendencies), schizophrenia, or bipolar/manic depressive disorder, it is preferable to the alternative. Of course, when on it, you do realize you should be feeling a certain way about things, but you don't, but, as you are on it, it doesn't really bother you that much. It does feel like a cage, but if that's what it takes for you to be safe to be around others and for them to be around you? That's a small price to pay.
This song is about her little relative not liking her/secretly jealous of her that is a few themes that runs throughout the album.... The album cover symbolises their love/hate relationship.... In other words: She wants love from her and is willing to move on if need be, that is The Open Door in a nutshell.... There is more to it but you have to listen to the album to learn more.... The songs are very cryptic if you have not been in said situation.... If you have, then, the whole album will be understood....
Lithium is a psychiatric medication (mood stabilizer) that usually is used for bipolar and major depression. My ex was on it for a good while, but it just kind of deadens your psyche so you don't "feel as much". Which is what she is getting at, that she wants to keep the pain and sorrow because it makes her feel alive.
Amy Lee is a compelling artist and a unique voice and songwriter, nice video, she is enchanting in a haunting, ethereal way. Great stuf, She was just touring with Halestorm, another amazing band with a great lady leading them in Lzzy Hale, on killer vocals & 2nd guitar. Try Freak Like Me, the official video, it's a banger! Enjoy. 🎸
Lithium was a go-to antidepressant and is very effective at it, however due to it's narrow therapeutic index (the range a drug goes from beneficial to lethal) it fell out of favor and SSRI and TCA kinda took the forefront though now lithium is kinda coming back into more common usage... Medicine, it's a wild place... Pretty sure the song is about the drug lithium, the symptoms she's describing definitely give me that impression.
Techically you are both right. It is about the drug lithium and how it bottles up her true self, yet she still needs the sorrow Of course it can also be metaphorical.
Hi great reaction. Amy Lee is truly a gifted singer and composer too... You haven't responded to nightwish for a long time. They really have a lot of very good music too. How about a reaction to Dead Boy's Poem - Live In Buenos Aires 2018. Greetings from Germany
Lithium is a powerful psych drug that basically makes you feel dead inside. Completely Flattens you out. My parents had me on it for like a year when I was a teenager because I was acting up. I don’t remember shit from my adolescence as a result.
From what I have gathered is that Amy lost a sister when she was young. This could have easily triggered all sorts of problems for her and it wouldn't surprise me if she was prescribed Lithium at some time. All speculation, but this could be a song from her personal experience with the subject matter at hand. A lot of hurt and sorrow and acting up can result from this type of trauma and parents can easily run out of options and turn to a doctor for help. But as with this drug and a good chunk of other drugs, you are managing symptoms and not really tackling the real issue that is the sorrow of losing a loved one and the fact that you have to work through it or you will be managing the symptoms for the rest of your life. Drugs can help you manage from day to day, but you still need to work on the cause of the problems. In any case, Amy Lee delivers a powerful song here and it resonates through the years...
I highly recommend you check out Epica. Simone Simons is on the same level of Amy, and the combination of her voice and the band is magic! First song i heard from them was "The Essence of Silence" and I've been in love ever since!
It’s about depression,Lithium is a chemical in the brain that makes you feel good and drug that’s used to treat depression because some people lack the right amount
Lithium is a drug/element used to battle depression and anxiety. It doesn't work for everyone. The song is kind of about trying to get away from it. Escaping what the pharma does, even though helpful maybe in the short term.... the long term solution is just to heal. Be alone and dream and realize who you are.

As a fellow old guy, the only one who compares might be Ann Wilson of Heart. But, I never got emotionally moved by her the way that Amy does. Amy connects with people.
This is kinda about the guy she was with (Seether)...he was too busy either or both taking drugs or alcohol. He was maybe not comfortable or confident or something when he was sober and only interacted with her in a loving way whe he was under the influence...hence the line 'didn't drink enough to say you love me'. I suppose he was kinda cold and emotionless when sober.
