Wayne Shorter was such a brilliant composer. He has been a big influence for me compositionally, which can be heard in particular on “Lalyc’s Groove” coming out 4/7/23 on the upcoming TRIOGRAM record.
This is my favorite Wayne tune - it’s not often played in the jazz world, but one that I love to play with the trio. This tune encapsulates everything I love about Wayne’s writing - the harmonic movement is so quirky, but his beautiful melodies are what glues the seemingly “strange” harmonic movement together and makes it perfect. This is a gorgeous waltz named after his daughter, “Miyako”.
