Jim, if it's a lifter noise, and not an exhaust manifold leak, you can fix it quickly by dumping about 1cup of a good quality ATF into the engine oil. Lifters can get a speck of carbon or varnish in the check valve and allow them to leak down creating slack in the valve train geometry and you hear it as a ticking sound. ATF has a super high detergent quality to it and it will clear a speck of carbon or varnish very quickly once the oil gets warmed up. And Jim, I'd be remorse If I didn't commend you for giving a very good representation of the sound. When you said Tick, Tick, Tick, with the frequency that you used, you gave a seasoned mechanic exactly what is needed when discussing a problem. That slower pace is exactly what a lifter would sound like. But, also an exhaust manifold leak at one of the individual ports can sound that way for a minute or so until the exhaust heats up the cast iron and closes the gap. You can locate the sound quickly and very decisively if you can take a piece of rubber hose and put one end in your ear and move the other end around suspected areas. A lot of times even though they make exhaust manifold gaskets, there is none between the head and exhaust manifold, so if a bolt works loose, it will leak and all you have to do is tighten it up. But if tightening doesn't work, and that's where the sound is coming from, you can just cut the bolt holes to make a "slip" gasket, and slide it in there instead of removing or machining the manifold. Usually an exhaust leak "tick" will always be there cold, go away within a minute or two, and never be there when the engine is hot. And just to let you know: ATF will not hurt anything if you choose it. It's perfectly compatible with motor oil. I'm glad you didn't damage the garage door jamb ramming your Olds sideways into it. Ha! Ha! OK, Fine Business Jim. ben/ michigan
Hi Jim it sounds like a sticky lifter, I use to work for an AMC dealer and when the lifters sounded like they where sticking we would put on an oil change 4 quarts of oil and 1 quart of transmission fluid. The transmission fluid would clean out the lifters.
Jim those Lucas products work great you won't have any problems with it the lucas Trans fix is a good product I recommend it to allot of people with front or rear seal leaks and you should add the lucas engine oil treatment to the engine to will probably get rid of that lifter tick 6:58
Use diesel oil, got all the vitamins in it for old motors, according to Derek on vicegrip garage
