More people need to hear this song today and understand it . If we are going to walk the same road together then i may need a hand , I am willing to also lend a hand alone the way. Its so easy when we just work together :) . Be well my friend !
What a beautiful song. Elton John, then a session musician, on piano. When Graham Nash left the Hollies in '68 to form Crosby, Stills and Nash, most thought that the band was in trouble. But in 1969 they had this huge hit and several fine songs to follow. There have been several instances of the phrase "He isn't heavy, he's my brother" or "he ain't heavy", being used in print going back to 1884, most having a religious connotation or a connotation of helping out your fellow man. Legendary band with many fine songs to listen to, Biz.
My high school choir adopted this song. Every member has learned it, for decades. And at the school's annual choir event, former members are invited to come up to the risers for a massive, multi-generational rendition.
Love this song by the Hollies! The first time I heard this song, I cried. It was so heartfelt, and I was going through some difficult times in my life when this song came out. Actually, this song helped me get through it. Thank you so much! ❤❤❤
We were all just wanting peace in those days. So sad to see what this country is becoming. If we all lived life like this song, what a beautiful world this would be 👵🏼☮️💜
A beautiful song, played this at my brother’s funeral, it seemed to fit perfectly as i did my best to get him thru the terrible times while he was in Vietnam…I carried him the the best I could, he wasn’t heavy, he was my brother💔😭…thank you for playing this
Your last comments really touched me. You are absolutely right! If we would all stand up together and love one another think what an even stronger and loving country we would be.
I was aware of this song…but it took on a whole new meaning when I lost my brother aged 56 to pancreatic cancer ….reminds me of good times edged with sadness…beautiful song
one of the most poignant and heartfelt songs of all time. We are on the end of need. For most of our lives, we were on the end of helping those in need. Please think good thoughts for us. Me, my husband, and son. We are facing the most difficult time of our entire life.
Okay Biz...here you go. "Carrie Anne" "Bus Stop" & "The Air That I Breathe" are three of my favorites from this amazing group of top notch musicians and song writers. Be well brother! ✌😎
I have sung this song to my kids and now my grandkids while putting them to sleep. It’s the only song I ever sing to them. This song is important. One of the most consequential and meaningful song ever written. Right up there with “Sound of Silence”.
This song is the very embodiment of my faith in Jesus: Love one another as I have loved you. Love is the best thing we humans have going. Y'all be kind now, y'hear? ❤
Hey, man. I'm not trying to contradict you, but you were correct. It was a harmonica if you look at the live version, you'll see the singer, pull it out and tear it up, so your ear was 100% correct, it is a harmonic. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Not trying to be a jerk or anything.I just thought since you thought it was the keyboard and not automatic.I'd just throw it out there.Love your station, man, you rock and remember we aint heavy. We're all each other's brother.stay kool bro. Its about us all
This song was inspired by a story we were all told in Catholic grade school in the early 60's. It's about two orphaned brothers, an older one carrying his younger brother in a snow storm. It's been too long for me to remember why they were out in the storm or where they were going though
There are several stories about this song. I'm sure no one knows which one is true. As to what some nun preached at you, I don't trust them to tell the truth.
I have been a fan of The Hollies since I was a kid, my mum had their LP's. The story I heard was from the Vietnam War and two African American brothers were in the same platoon, one was injured and the other carried him 10 miles to the nearest aid station. A journalist asked the brother that carried his sibling, "wasn't he heavy", the brother replied "he aint heavy, he's my brother". There are several stories going around about how the song came to be, I prefer the one above as the timing and the wording fits. Several years ago the song was used in a beer ad in Scotland, it went to number one on the charts overnight, almost 20 years after it was first released. I think it was Allan Clarke that when asked about the song, said it had to be written in the 60's, if it was written today it would be "i'm too busy, carry your own weight".
@@haruchai I think it's more a parable than anything else but memories floated up last night. There's a 1938 movie w/Bing Crosby called Boys Town about Catholic priests running an orphanage and the story is used in the movie. I don't know if it's supposed to be based on a true story or not
Amazingly it didn't reach no.1 on the UK singles chart when it was first released in 1969, reaching no.3 but it did in 1988 when it was re-released after it was used on a beer commercial.
Great reaction, I hope for your own pleasure you will watch the official video-it's live and really wonderful. One of my all time favorite songs. Wish it was played more today. We all need to hear it. BTW, that was a real harmonica.
It is clear this song didn't touch your soul. I remember when this song first came out . I was a kid & it I felt it so deep that I still try to live that way.
The lyrics are about soldiers during the Vietnam War. Band of Brother, a brotherhood only soldiers in war could understand. They literally have each other's back. Wounded soldiers pulled out by their brothers in arms. I think the lead vocalists brother was in Vietnam.
Never thought of this song in the sense that everyone is your brother. Really thoughtful. Thanks for that. Bye the way, if you love the Who then check out "Lets see action". I doubt you can find any better commentary on where humanity needs to be for change.
It's based on a true story, apparently two boys from a foster home were spotted by the parish priest, one lad had suffered polio and needed help up the steep road and another boy was carrying him. When the priest asked whether the boy needed help if the other little fellow was too heavy, the boy replied "No, he ain't heavy, he's my brother". ❤❤
Yeah, you got the message right. Isn't it a great song? . They sang this song at my brother's high school graduation (boy's school). My mom cried. She was sentimental like everyone in my family. So yeah! Keep these idealistic sixties and seventies songs coming!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
The Air That I Breathe....one of their best!
This is an hymn to humanity. If we all followed this maxim there would be no conflict. 76, this performance still brings tears to my eyes.
BizMatik, you’re killing it lately with all these great songs, finally someone that appreciates music from the 60 and 70’s, what a great great song
Thank you
More people need to hear this song today and understand it . If we are going to walk the same road together then i may need a hand , I am willing to also lend a hand alone the way. Its so easy when we just work together :) . Be well my friend !
Well said, thank you
Amen to that we all share the same back yard and we should all care about each other
I agree! Amen or Let it be so!❤️
🙏🏿🙏🏿
Heck yeah it's way past time for what the song suggests
Allen Clark is singing and playing the harmonic in the beginning and the end.
One of my favorite songs. Reminds me of my dad's military career. And also loosing my brother at 16. It's just a masterpiece
This iconic song is my favorite Hollie song, hell, one of my favorite songs period! The message, the presentation, perfect...Thank you.

Love the Hollies. This cut gives me chills.

A long, long time favorite because the message is good and true. So are the music and the voices. ☮️
This song came out in 69 I believe. American Radio in Vietnam gave our brothers hope playing this song. It was and still is a touching song!
I love this song. Adore it. Always have. It will forever give me goosebumps for a variety of reasons.
This is one of the greatest songs of the 60s.

I was very very young when this came out. I think it was my first true understanding of the war in Vietnam.
SO many great songs by The Hollies...keep digging
I absolutely love this song love the message great reaction man
Your last comments really touched me. You are absolutely right! If we would all stand up together and love one another think what an even stronger and loving country we would be.
Killer song! Its like, " I got your back, no matter what" ! (that's a Hammond B3 organ you heard.)
Wow. I always thought it was a harmonica. Love the song regardless.
@@sbalsamo410 Its probably both! lol
That is harmonica I believe. The Air That I Breathe should be next
Yes! I love this song is Magnificent!❤️

It actually is a harmonica. Watch the live version, you will see the lead singer play the harmonica.

So glad that you dipped into the oldies. Been along time since I've heard them also.
The Hollies have another fantastic song called “Long Dark Road”. “The Air that I Breathe” is a must.
one of the most poignant and heartfelt songs of all time.
We are on the end of need. For most of our lives, we were on the end of helping those in need. Please think good thoughts for us. Me, my husband, and son. We are facing the most difficult time of our entire life.
You got the meaning. Great song.

1969 a fantastic year for Great music. You got it right Biz , we need to try and care about each other. Life is short, take care.
That song makes me cry every time I hear it.
Amen to all that , Biz .
Solid take .
More of the helpin . Less of the opposite .
Vote again for "The Air that I Breathe"
Beautiful song! ☮️❤️😎
The Air That I Breathe. ‘Nuff said.
Great song.
This is a most righteous tune my friend!
I think you are spot on about the meaning of the song. How about some older Hollies - Bus Stop
Yes it was a harmonica
It actually is a harmonica. And the lead singe, Allan Clarke, was the one playing it on this track.
This song was inspired by a story we were all told in Catholic grade school in the early 60's. It's about two orphaned brothers, an older one carrying his younger brother in a snow storm. It's been too long for me to remember why they were out in the storm or where they were going though

Thanks -- the song makes sense now. I needed the back story.

100 percent harmonica!
You got it, Biz, you got it. Amen.

That one always makes me cry. I think there IS actually a harmonica.
NO MAN LEFT BEHIND

I'm afraid it was the harmonica, played by the lead singer watch the video👍👍👍👍 I've had the privileged to have seen them live
Pure Greatness
