    Isn't a square foot of decent shell cordovan at least $60? 3.5 sqft of Alran Chevre would be at least $30-50 if not more. Unless there is wholesale sourcing of materials, the materials cost should be more around the 100-120 dollar range. Correct me if I'm wrong since I may need to find suppliers who offer leather at the given price ranges.

      Love your comment ❤️ I was wondering the same. Seems way to low for leather cost. The cost should be calculated differently for artisan brands as they do not get wholesale prices.

      @@vilmas7227 Exactly! And I don't think artisanal materials can be wholesaled given their scarcity, otherwise luxury brands would be able to offer higher quality leather.

    • @Si-Al-Ti
      @Si-Al-Ti Год назад +7

      Of course you don’t pay for only materials and labor, you also pay for the space where the work is done, for the maintenance of tools and equipment, website upkeep, order packing and shipping, you pay for the skills and knowhow of replacing that specialty alternator that can only come with years of experience.

      @@Grom-rl8bm ok dude, your example was flawed as it didn't fit the context of the video. I fixed it in my response, but you apparently didn't pick up on it, so let me phrase this in a way you might understand. On its own, your example works, yeah you are getting fucked over by the mechanic, might as well top off the blinker fluid while you're at it. But you made it in the context of a video talking about a made on order, custom job built out of premium materials and you would have to treat the car, the spare parts and the mechanic the same way to make a valid point. but you didn't and therefor i won an argument on the internet. let me live my sad life alone now pls

      @@Grom-rl8bm General rule of thumb for manufacturing is 15% of cost = labor + materials. Slightly higher for customized and lower made goods. Either way, charging $465 for $150 is a sweet deal for the customer.

      @@tanner.leatherstein Thanks for your response. Agreed, any contribution to the leather space is a net positive. I understand your stated intent of democratizing the leather market - people cannot properly manage the affairs of a democracy with critical facts withheld. Thank you for doing your part to bring these things to light, to educate those who might enjoy truly high quality items without (yet) the designer premium. Nothing is exempt from evolution it seems.
      An artisinal crafter myself, fantastical thoughts of lifting the veil, the one carefully crafted on Madison Avenue, have crossed my mind. It's a dauntingly insurmountable task.
      On a side note: if it were my profit-driven, perhaps wholly inferior leatherstuffs strapped to a table, slated for dissection - their material quality and methods of construction open to indefensible scrutiny... I might see your position as adversarial. Lol.
      Cheers,
      "Robert"

    $465?! Wow, that’s more than the leather jacket I just bought my wife from Thursday Boots. I’d never pay that much for a wallet. Don’t see how u can justify a $290 mark up

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 Год назад +2

      You can play this game till the end of time, but the point of this price comparison is not whether $465 is worth the money to everyone looking for a wallet. It's worth the money for people who are shopping for luxury wallets, because the actual products shows as much, if not better, quality than mainstream designer brands. However much you spent on that leather jacket, I guarantee you someone can reasonably say they can't justify that much on a jacket, but that would just be missing the point.
      The markup is fair. It's less than major designer brands, uses better materials than the closest priced options from those designers, and are handmade. Chester Mox likely has other operating costs beyond just the leather raw material and labor costs. They also need to turn a profit, like most businesses, in order to continue staying in business.
