I currently live in Japan, so would be really interested to hear about Japanese leather brands you come across that get your stamp of approval! Love the videos you're putting out!
Japan is a leather bag lover's heaven. Leather for crafting is sold in Tokyu Hands (a store chain that's basically everywhere) for hobby leather bag makers and crafters too, so even as a casual shopper I think people develop an eye for what's good and bad, what's high quality and what's plastic cheap stuff. The designs there are *a lot* about function and durability, not just about status since people there will get give side-eye to bags and fashion that give off too much of a "look at me, I'm rich" vibe.
Can you do a review on "The Row"? The Olsen Twins have been around in the fashion industry forever and I think their brand would be cool to discover if their quality is worth the high pricing or if the pricing is created with the idea of releasing product for their celebrity customers?
@@tanner.leatherstein Funny story: I carry a huge laptop for work and was sick of using a nylon backpack. I found what I thought was a really attractive leather bag on Etsy that would accomodate my enormous computer and still look chic. What showed up is a Margaux super fake. Literally every single detail is the same including the interior fabric and the embossed hardware. The irony is I had never heard of The Row until I googled it and saw the price (my bag was about $250). The quality is exquisite (perfect thick edge paint, perfect stitching, substantial hardware with clean embossing). The seller has disappeared, probably re-invented under another shop name.
I love Il Bisonte. I've been buying pieces since the 1980s. I used to go to the Paris boutique on the rue du Cherche Midi in the 6th, a few steps from Poilâne bakery. I'd go to the bakery and then drop into Il Bisonte. I don't remember if that's the first Il Bisonte boutique that I went to in Paris to check it out, but when I noticed that boutique near my bakery, I started going to that one regularly whenever in Paris. Greetings from Los Angeles
I often think the greatest compliment a fashion or accessories brand can have is popularity in the Japanese market. To me they are the most discerning, appreciative and stylish consumers who recognise quality and craftsmanship when they see it., and they rarely buy into hype or for the sake of showing off wealth. If the world were filled with Japanese-minded consumers, individuality would flourish and there would be a thriving independent craft industry, and our shopping streets would be filled with exciting shops and quality vintage stores instead of the cookie-cutter fast fashion and mass-luxury chains that currently blight our cities.
I think you summed it up really well. That’s why I am dying to go and explore this amazing culture at the first possible time. Thank you for your great insight!
Living in Japan truly is a haven for quality enthusiasts. Japanese brands continuously set high standards, making it a paradise for those who appreciate top-notch craftsmanship. It's fantastic that you're enjoying such an environment.
I am obsessed with my Il Bisonte bags and leather goods. They get better and better with time. Every time I pull out my wallet to use it I admire the softness and patina of the leather - it brings such joy to my day! No 'luxury' brand come close to matching their quality. I would definitely sign up for your leather tour in Italy!
Speaking of Italian brands, as an Italian I would be very curious to see a review of Furla and Coccinelle, two local artisanal leather brands super loved also abroad :)
My first "designer" purse was Il Bisonte in 1989. I bought it at Macy's for $230. It was a unique deign and I wish I still had the purse! They do not have anything similar on the website.
Interesting & educational video Tanner. It’s great to see a designer using locally sourced materials & artisans to produce their products. Unfortunately cheap mass production puts pressure on smaller producers to cut their costs. I love how leather ages, faux leather peels & goes sticky with age & is not environmentally friendly.
Hope you can go to Japan soon. Given the yen to dollar conversion it's a massive bargain. A friend of mine got a secondhand LV wallet from a pawn shop for 80.
Thank you for your spontaneous review! We're thrilled to receive feedback from a leather enthusiast like you. We'd like to extend a special invitation to visit our store on Via del Parione in Florence during your upcoming trip to Tuscany. It would be our pleasure to show you also the extraordinary collection of items dedicated to bison, it's close to our store.
Thank you for your warm invitation and kind words! I plan to visit later this year or early next year, and I look forward to connecting with you to arrange a visit to your store. Exploring the extraordinary collection sounds like a fantastic addition to my itinerary, and I'm eager to see the craftsmanship and beauty of the bison items you have to offer.
I would love to see you go to an American outlet mall and see the Michael kors, Kate space, Samsonite, coach, and tons of other brands touting leather goods.
@@tanner.leatherstein in the shoe world there are many channels that compare direct to consumer brands sold only online versus ones you find in retail stores and see the differences for the prices. Il Bisonte Japan offers products quite different from Europe/US. I like that the investor respects and maiintains the brand's earthy but elegant style. Thanks for the analysis. 😊
Good to know, as always! I do have a couple of questions though...1st - Was this particular Clutch made before or after the Japanese acquisition?...2nd - On my first trip to Europe, I was informed that the best leathers came from Spain. Has this changed in 20 years?
Fabulous review!!! Loved learning about this designer, their products and the Italian and Japanese leather scenes. ❤ PS- Really enjoyed the NYTimes article about you which just happened to pop in my news feed yesterday. You’ve had a fascinating journey so far and I’m sure the best is yet to come.
I design and create crochet handbags. Even though I don’t work with leather, these videos help me so much with pricing and construction/durability ideas. Keep up the great work 👍🏾
Il Bisonte was, like Mandarina Duck, VERY popular in Europe from the end of 1980´s onwards. Later they sort of faded and, probably, concentrated to Japan, although in the outlet village that I used to frequent, they never closed the shop but the stock reduced much and went towards jewellery mostly...
You should do a tour of the leather school in Florence! My favorite bag was made by a student there. It's the only bag that I have where people stop me and compliment it.
Nice video and honest deconstruction. It appears they are made in Italy without the amount of attention to detail & hardware quality expected from an expensive bag & brand. It basically shows that a very high-quality leather bag can be made anywhere in the world using the best leather and components from around the world. High-quality craftsmanship & process really matters whether it's Asia or Europe. But the country of origin perceptions can get in the way of getting a premium price for the product. So people will pay more for a Made in Italy bag than one made in Asia even if the all-around quality is superior in the bag made in Asia.
👍🤩💝Oh wow, my mom had a beige-tan colored clutch when I was going up. I loved that clutch. Even though I was a kid, I knew it was quality & she used it for special occasions. I wonder what happened to that clutch purse.🤔🧐
I am sure it look great now perhaps in a darker and shiner shade but great looking aged leather. That’s what happens to vegtan leathers and I love it. I hope you find it
I am from Asia, and I definitely agree to artisans in Europe making as much materials and processes in Europe as possible. As someone who worked in capital markets and served buyside clients, I am a bit tired of the endless pursuit of profits. The race to the bottom has to stop, and this movement of localization is one way.
I’d love a tour on Italian tanneries… normally as a tourist I’d hard to get these kind of tours, plus traveling with your loved one probably not something they’d care about in my case. Let us know! Sounds interesting.

Unfortunately, the recognition is all about marketing and when you fairly price your items you don’t have a large budget to run that type of marketing. The luxury houses does that well by overpricing their products first to give themselves that budget to overmarket and create the perception of quality and luxury (sometimes falsely). It’s a business choice of the brand but has a very important impact on the life of the business and its perceived value in the market
@@tanner.leathersteinMarketing 101: there's no (or very little,) relationship between quality and price because marketing is now about selling 'experience'. I had assumed it was maybe an emerging brand - turns out it was storied and well established, I just never once had heard of it. Now to learn they’re all the rage in Japan is just awesome lol
Yes the color of the kislux is beautiful and it is a great decision, maybe one day they will add feet and straps. It would be nice to have a bigger bag during the colder months when we have to store gloves, beanies, scarves, etc…

I love your videos so much! I always learn a lot from you. When you have time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Delvaux! I have a tempete i bought on a trip to japan and its just so beautiful and luxurious. As good or better than the big brands with more marketing
I have stopped by their NY store this summer to check their bags. I loved the leathers mostly but the SA didn’t know anything about the brand or the products. Couldn’t answer any of my questions making it a non pleasant visit considering it is a luxury brand. It made me feel like I wouldn’t pay that premium for their products with that sort of store experience.
I live in Kyoto so I often go to the il Bisonte store to compare their prices and workmanship to my own work. At first I liked their minimalist designs and the natural vegtan look and smell but the more I learned about leathercraft the more my opinion changed. As you said with the clutch they're able to hide their seams but with items like wallets and coin cases these shortcomings become much more apparent. They don't use glue, bevel or even polish their edges so while the leather itself might be decent, it feels like a half-baked product for the price you're paying.
Concerning the “made in Italy” I red some articles about the new Italian brand “AIM Handmade in Italy”…they seem good leather bags, but could you review it in some your next videos?
Have you ever heard or take a look at this brand called Gobelini Firenze? What do you think about this brand? I take a look at one of their satchel a few weeks ago and I was shocked that the bag is real leather since the price is very affordable. The satchel bag I was looking was around A$550.
Wow! thanks for this! I live in the Philippines and recently purchased a leather bag that's by a Filipino brand called our tribe! I believe they use cowhide leather. There's something regal about using a leather bag especially, when I go to the office. I've had hand me downs from my aunt from the same brand and they're still alive 🤣 Will definitely check Il Bisonte if I ever visit Japan!
Exactly the information I was looking for! So happy to hear that it is good quality and of true Italian craftsmanship. Going to hit up Il Bisonte next week in Milan for sure. Thank you!
I live in Tokyo, I don't know much about the leather goods here but I see a lot of leather stores around Asakusa in Tokyo, it'd be great if you can do a video about leather goods in Japan, they seem to have quite a big artisan leather goods scene.
Can you deconstruct a Bulgari bag? I love the feel of their leather, but it feels like there is very minimal finish and I worry it is more difficult to maintain
Niels Peeraer is another European brand that is more popular in East Asia than it is in Europe and America. In Japan, the leather goods industry is having a hard time getting young folks to buy leather goods (probably cuz they're struggling to meet ends meet in their daily life which is why they aren't purchasing them as much). However, I notice their leather wallets and other small accessories tends to attract many young Japanese folks since they tend to be much cheaper than a whole leather bag. Plus they have more variety and designs in their wallets than their leather bags.
The supply chain scheme you describe would actually be illegal to then stamp Made in USA. Made in USA is heavy regulated, unlike in other countries. They could say Assembled in USA or something like that, but not Made in USA. Lions not Sheep was fined $211,335 last year for thinking they could do this.
That’s great to hear. I know in many countries it is measure by $ value added proportion so many vompanies make the most of a bag in China costing $50 on the invoice then add the final zipper and finish the bag in Europe as it costs $60 for that a couple hours of job. Making the product suitable for made in X label as bow most of the $value added in Europe. I will read more about the US regulations as I am curious and happy to hear this.
Omg yesssss leather tour every year or 6 months fr AHAHHAHA that would bee the coolest thing ever. Ive never been to Europe, and would love to travel with a single goal or purpose not just like a tourist wandering around taking pictures of every cliché tourist picture stop they can😂😂😂

Wow! thanks for this!
I'd love to see a tour video. Maybe with a discussion of some of the brands they supply to.
I"m just curious, saying the bag is made in Europe/US make it more valuable than say it made in somewhere in Asia? Hmmm
Love your reviews! Can you please do a review of Carolina Herrera Blason crossbody bag? Thank you!
Can you review Longchamp? Thank you.
Soon to come early next year. Very curious
Cool! Will you ever tear apart Gabo Guzzo Millefoglie J bag? Thank you!
What about furla ? Good bags ?
I'm also interested in this brand.
I haven’t done a detailed review of Furla yet but it is requested frequently so we will do ine next year
I love furla, can you do a furla product? They’re so underrated and I love it!!!!!
They have a bag that costs 325 Euros but has no lining. ???
Leather tour to everywhere is great! Not just Tuscany! please
